yeahhh the whole time watching this I'm sorta scratching my head because it doesn't really have the perfect resolution for anything... even tho the aspect ratio is the native super nintendo 8:7 the resolution is a 4.8x so you're stuck with imperfect interger scaling on systems that can be played with better integer scaling and fpga performance on the analogue pocket, not to mention the pocket screen is a perfect integer scale of gb/gbc. Then it's obviously more powerful than an analogue pocket since the pocket caps out at snes/genesis, but every system beyond that is at least 4:3 or wider, so then the aspect ratio of the screen is off for those systems that take advantage of all that juice. at the end of the day it seems suuuuper expensive for a device that's not perfect to play any system. Like for the price of the dmg version you could get an analogue pocket and an odin 2...

I was actually expecting it to be a bit more expensive based on the hardware. When I saw the specs I estimated prices to start at $400. For me the thing that kills my interest for this console is not the price, but the stick/touch pad situation and the lack of a headphone port.
Meh, thought it would be more expensive. 300-350 is pretty reasonable for a low volume product with these specs. oled screens of this size and ratio are probably not that easy to source.
Yeah, if you ever watch their streams there's people that seem to buy everything they make. For me, it basically, just makes me feel like a kid again, marveling at cool things that I'll never be able to own lol
If I wasn’t focused on pumping more power out of my car I could probably get whatever handheld I want, but car go vroom, handheld doesn’t. Although ayaneo definitely needs some more budget devices, they could get people hooked on their product and then they may buy the higher end stuff in the future
Not really, it’s just like any expensive device you just save up for it. I think you are talking more about poeple that buy many of them in the same year and it still doesn’t take a big chunk out their balance. I can only buy sh*t like this once or twice a year (if there is anything I want that badly) after i skimp out on some things I want or need to save up lol

I’m thinking so far these are the backing prices on indiegogo to help launch the device, I think they come with extra stuff too. We don’t know if these will be the retail prices yet as they can sell the devices alone with nothing extra to reduce the price.
I have to say something here, I really like watching your videos even those for devices that don't really interest me like this one wich is much to expensive for the low Profile retro gamer I am. Your videos are always fun and exude production quality. That being said I am starting to get a little concerned with the rate you are posting those, to my mind that's sort of asking for eventual burnout. Perhaps you could talk to someone who had the same experience of their channel taking of like e. g. Your best friend Russ for tips how to handle the onslaught of review units and how to pace yourself healthily. Just some selfish words of concern from someone who would like to watch videos you made for the foreseeable future. Take care

I’m really happy that the Analogue exists. It generated a ton of interest in the whole retro scene and a home for physical cartridges again has led to a growing homebrew physical cartridges scene. We have a slowly growing economy building up around retro style video games with multiple Analogue competitors now even and that makes me so happy!
I like the retro design and the oled screen. This is definitely something I would have considered to buy but the price is mental! I'd MAYBE pay half for it. The retro one is 670$ 💀

As someone who doesn’t know you or hasn’t seem enough of you to “trust” your review, I did notice how extremely positive this review was. I don’t think you have mentioned any negatives at all, it might just be THAT GOOD, but just wanted to share my thoughts
Negatives were mentioned. Thumbstick placement, left stick is a bit too tall, right trackpad isn't good for aiming, 16:9 stuff is small, and high price.
Like in life, it feels nice to treat yourself to something premium for experience, even just once. Obviously you can enjoy life without doing that but it’s still nice to do it if you can. At least it’s not 5 star food that will be gone in 20 seconds lol
Pre-ordered this a zillion years ago on IndieGoGo. As much as I enjoy gaming on the Steamdeck / PC/ PS5 there is something about retro-gaming on these types of vertical handhelds that's very satisfying. I held out on getting an Analog Pocket and I'm glad i did for this device. 8 bit and 16bit on that screen are going to be pretty nice ( whenever it finally shows up ). A lot of hate that I dont understand for the touchpad. From what I have seen it works fine as the right thumbstick and if you like playing old Scum point and click PC adventure titles like I do this is perfect for those type of games.
I know we're splitting hairs here, due to it being an unusual display sourced from an LG Wing(a phone that had a 2nd display that is 3.92-inches and 1240x1080), but it's actually a 31:27 aspect ratio. I suspect Ayaneo didn't use that number in their marketing because it looks silly and way out of the ordinary. The closest "standard" aspect ratio is apparently 1.15:1, which seems to have been used in some very old films. I would much rather they have gone the RG CubeXX route and used a much lower-power chip. Widescreen stuff is comically small on that somewhat small display and it makes it pointlessly expensive.
True. That's why I said 'more or less'. It's very very close (compared to if it was 1080p and 8:7). Only like 6 pixels different, and on a screen with this high pixel density you'd never notice that.
I really like how this thing looks, can't help but feel that the specs are a bit overkill for this form factor tbh like it kinda feels like they crammed so much into it just to keep the price so high but it is a pretty interesting device.
This wouldn't be a good first handheld IMO. My suggestion would be to get something easy and cheap like the Miyoo Mini + to get started, and then later you can upgrade if you enjoy the hobby.

Their build quality is better that my Anbernics and Powkiddies that often take multiple tries to turn on . You think this device may be for me? For everyone griping about the price, let's be clear, this unit is competing with the SteamDeck and that level of system, not with other retro portables. The HD video out over USB-C with charge means it can be mounted to a USC-C Hub with HDMI/DP out and multiple USB ports, and full wifi 6 and bluetooth means full controller support. Just like the SteamDeck, this is both a big-screen emulator console AND a MUCH MORE PORTABLE handheld. At the price point the question is: do you prefer Steam integration with PC Game Support or much much better portability in the Android ecosystem? On paper the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 SoC beats the Zen2 CPU performance, but the SteamDeck will likely have better thermals, until we get head to head performance testing we won't know which system actually performs better, so is it any surprise the price point is similar? I literally just bought a (used) SteamDeck to run as both a TV Emulator Console and portable, and if I didn't just buy that I'd be seriously looking at this... in fact I still am.
yeah I guess if you want one device to be your gameboy-sized handheld and also consolized tv emulator then I see what you mean but I think at that point an odin 2 mini is a much better value proposition overall. it would be nice to see a size comparison tho.

I mean, being really into older games and handhelds, Ayaneo makes some of the fanciest, smartly designed, stuff that I could see myself splurging on one device and just riding it out for years, using it more than I would any Xbox or PS5, but I still just don't have that kind of cash

I think rg cube and z1 unicorn are pretty good, just aren't foldables, but ds is pretty good on them, and I think the size of dual screens is good but its subjective
@@novh4ck the cube can emulate everything on 3ds at a 2× resolution right now(pretty mich perfect, any issues are due to emulators not the device), but I can understand why'd you want dual screens, in the meantime I think those are your best options
I was really intrigued at the beginning, but then you showed the price and I was outraged.. anything over $450 is pretty much out of the question, because at that point I'd much rather buy a Steam Deck which is a much better device than any retro handheld..
You don't need a clone, just an editor. And they're an underpaid professional, you get to abuse them for little money. It's awesome (I'm kidding, because I edited for years)

Amazing device, I wish they didn't make it prohibitively expensive. It's way too much for casuals and literally only for rich enthusiasts. I would love the retro styling but they made that even More for absolutely no reason. It's a retro device where the retro color is out of reach, just baffling

I've been using bluetooth earbuds. It has Bluetooth 5.4 so no latency if you use good buds.
I mean, being really into older games and handhelds, Ayaneo makes some of the fanciest, smartly designed, stuff that I could see myself splurging on one device and just riding it out for years, using it more than I would any Xbox or PS5, but I still just don't have that kind of cash

Yes, I've been using low latency bluetooth earbuds on it and it works great. It has Bluetooth 5.4 so it can handle anything.

All that power but only 1 analog stick, meaning PS2 and GC, the main systems that would benefit most from the extra power, won’t be right.
Still, many games from those systems will be very right

The one I am waiting for still does not exist. An affordable compact fanless DS-like handheld. Aya Neo Flip is the closest but yeah... that's not it.
I think rg cube and z1 unicorn are pretty good, just aren't foldables, but ds is pretty good on them, and I think the size of dual screens is good but its subjective

@@novh4ck the cube can emulate everything on 3ds at a 2× resolution right now(pretty mich perfect, any issues are due to emulators not the device), but I can understand why'd you want dual screens, in the meantime I think those are your best options

I was really intrigued at the beginning, but then you showed the price and I was outraged.. anything over $450 is pretty much out of the question, because at that point I'd much rather buy a Steam Deck which is a much better device than any retro handheld..

Amazing device, I wish they didn't make it prohibitively expensive. It's way too much for casuals and literally only for rich enthusiasts. I would love the retro styling but they made that even More for absolutely no reason. It's a retro device where the retro color is out of reach, just baffling
