Minor corrections: his Ghouls n' Ghosts recommendation is actually for the Sega Master System version, not the Arcade version. Similarly, his Outrun recommendation is for the Genesis version, and his Pac-Man recommendation is for the NES version (Though any versions of them are probably pretty good.)
I rarely get to play games, I spend most of my time collecting the roms and building my retro front ends and the rest of the time scrolling through thousands of them feeling overwhelmed. Anyone else has this dilemma?
I feel you, brother. I spend more time setting up the device with an overwhelming amount of games on different systems than actually playing any of them. I now just will set up maybe 2 or 3 games per system. Once I finish those ones or get tired of them, I will add a couple more at a time. That way, it makes it easier to digest a smaller group of games that I can focus on.

My dad always said "merry-oh" too, because that's how they said it on the commercial where they parodied "Car 54 Where Are You?" as that was one of his favorite shows back then.
Lots of people pronounce the name Mario as "Merry-oh" because that's just how names work and certain dialects formed (depending on who you ask in North America, for example, it's either a "northeastern" pronunciation or how "true Italian-Americans" pronounce the name). That doesn't make it correct, though. We know clearly and precisely how his name is pronounced, not only by his creator and company of origin, but repeatedly through the very games he stars in and just so happens to say his name: "Mah-ree-oh." If Mario was a real human and, say, came to your local Best Buy to sign copies of his newest release, you wouldn't go up to him and scream "I love your games, Mare-yo!" just as you wouldn't mispronounce a name to someone's face if you heard or were corrected on how it was pronounced. It's embarrassing and rude to do, mostly, but also makes you look like a total imbecile to any onlookers. That, of course, is more cloudy when it comes to some ubiquitous name for celebrities and characters-- but when we literally hear the entity saying their name every time we boot up his games, what's the excuse? Ultimately it's just something that happens to the general population, like your dad does-- saying a word or phrase in a specific and defiant way whether colloquially or habitually. Many people's moms called any console a "Nintendo" and couldn't help but say "Pokey-men" despite endless corrections. It's nothing to be annoyed with, but it is pretty jarring to hear a person tied deeply with gaming and Nintendo purposely and knowingly mispronounce it. Makes you think less of them, if they're portraying themselves as someone respectable and knowledgeable of the hobby. And no, I don't personally care how you pronounce it 😏

Great video like always. My only sadness is waiting to get the means to pick one of these retro handhelds and return to these systems...... the nostalgia hits hard.
Thumbs up for Tetris DX. I've clocked hundreds of hours on it on various retro handhelds over the past few years. Perfect pick up n play puzzle game. The intermissions between periods were my favorite part when I was 4 years old. I would turn the game on and start a game then just watch the clock until intermission and play the minigame.
@@m.sperry1390 NHL 9X on Genesis is classic. Each game had different charms. They seemed to get less violent as they went on. Took out fighting, then took out bleading head injuries. But thats fine. I usually picked the Sabres when they had Mogilny. He was speedy and Agile.
I loved Tetris, but my favourite puzzle game of all time is Panel de Pon, which ironically was renamed and reskinned to "Tetris Attack" for the west, even though it doesn't share a lot of similarities to the original Tetris. It was a game that launched in the twilight of the SNES and it's simply a load of fun to play. It also got reskinned as "Pokemon Battle League". A truly classic puzzle game that is pure fun, and one of my all time faves!
Been binge watching your videos. You sir have passion for your content and it doesn’t just show, it shines. The conformation bias for purchasing the oled steamdeck is also pretty cool.
I would only add one NEEDED game for your list. It's one that you and retro game corps have shown off when reviewing handhelds. And it's my personal favorite. Advance Wars gba.
I'm a sports gamer, so Baseball Stars on the NES was one of my favorites. I also liked Volleyball on the NES, it's one that doesn't get much attention but is pretty good and realistic for its time.
Great list! You actually listed most of the games I owned/played during childhood. I still play these games to this day and have a great time! You could probably do another list of retro recommendations. I also highly recommend other 8 and 16 bitters like Earthworm Jim 1&2, the Donkey Kong Country trilogy, Super Castlevania IV, Yoshi's Island, Ristar, Dynamite Headdy, Secret of Mana, Mega Man X, Pokémon Gold/Silver, Shatterhand, DuckTales, Chip 'N Dale Rescue Rangers, Bubble Bobble and Gunstar Heroes.
What a fantastic list! I have an RG35XX, and its always hard to find games to play when you have entire libraries of games on your device, so having a list of bangers like this is inspiring! I would have done Link to the Past myself, but Link's Awakening is still a great Zelda game that everyone should play (and possibly grab tissues). Definitely do another one!
Nice Just played Sonic 3 and knuckles! Had 3 as a kid and remember renting the Knuckles add on from the local grocery store. I had no idea until this last play through that you get a second half to the game! Playing new levels in sonic 3 was the coolest experience
Awesome list ! Thanks a lot ! Now we need secont one of this video because a little bit missing like Zelda or Neo Geo Pocket games etc.. You can always add something but we need second part of this video.. Thanks again ! 🤗
I'm English and we play hockey on grass while drinking tea, so I'd never heard of Blades of Steel. It looks fun so I'm gonna play it. Thanks Dweeb! Alongside OG Pac-Man, I recommend Pac-Man Championship Edition (Demake). It's a NES version of the modern Pac-Man CE. It's on the Switch as part of the Namco Museum, but it's a real NES ROM you can play on your retro handheld (or real NES). And it is BLOODY AMAZING.
Link to the Past is great, but I'm so glad you chose Link's Awakening. I find myself coming back to it much more than LttP. Here are some of my additions: Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES) Super Metroid (SNES) Mega Man X (SNES) Super Mario RPG (SNES) Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES) Punch Out! (NES) TMNT II: The Arcade Game (NES) I could go on and on, but I think that'll do for now.
Thanks for promoting Sonic 3 + Knuckles. It's my favorite Sonic but most lists I see have Sonic 2 ranked higher. I think 3 with the addition of Knuckles was a way better game.
Why not Link's Awakening DX? edit: I must also recommend the DS version of Chrono Trigger over the SNES original. Has the PSX cutscenes without the load times of that version. And also has an updated translation if you don't care for the original script. Idr if this console could handle DS though.
Wow, I never realized that you could play a small amount of F-Zero while playing Wario Ware, Inc. A fantastic list! So many awesome games on this list. I understand you can't add them all, otherwise this video would be 4 hours long, but a few of my additions would be: 1. WarGames: Defcon 1 on the PS1 2. Secret of Mana on the SNES 3. Golden Sun on the GBA 4. Faceball 2000 on the SNES 5. Cyborg Justice on the Genesis 6. Ecco the Dolphin and/or Tides of Time on the Sega CD 7. Almost any Bomberman game in the 8 - 16 bit era 8. Almost any great Beat-em Up title from the 16 - 32 bit era
Just the thing! Its not just kids who would benefit from this kind of showcase. Some of us grown ups had parents who were too stingy to buy us real consoles back in the day. We had a Tunix. A what? Exactly. I've been trying to work out how to scale the mountain of NES and SNES games on my handhelds.
A unique racing game from Blizzard of all devs was Rock n Roll Racing for SNES. Always loved that game. Think a 16-bit sequel to RC-Pro Am, in a Sci-Fi setting, with an 80s Rock soundtrack.
Tetris DX is probably my most played game on my retro handhelds. I love me some tetris, and the dx version is almost perfect. I like having a hold block option as well, but its not that necessary
it wasn't on this particular list, but i started playing pinball: revenge of the gator thanks to another one of your videos & now it's one of my go-tos! i also like the gameboy version of rod land and anything kirby on basically every platform lol 💖
Thanks for the recommendations :) BTW, this is not a diss, I'm all for living and letting live, I just found it funny that you say Merry-oh instead of Mario, yet in the caption you wrote "I say "Mario"" :)
Dang good and eclectic list of retro games, Dweeb! You already got me started on BurgerTime Deluxe, but there are definitely some games I'm going to have to try when I'm, as you Canucks would say, oot and aboot. I was impressed by how accurate the NES Pac-Man looked, at least compared to the 2600 atrocity. Hey, I personally love the Atari 2600, and will play Asteroids, Missile Command, Space Invaders, Chopper Command, Atlantis, Seaquest, and others 'til the day I die, but yeah, there are some stinkers in that library.
Great list, for quick play sessions, my extra suggestions would be two Atari games, H.E.R.O and RiverRaid. And on a beat 'em up I'd always carry Streets or Rage 2
I like your list I think MegaMan 3 is superior to 2 as well, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles IS my favourite game ever. Glad you mentioned that one over 2 as well I personally prefer Mario Bros 3 over Super Mario World, but that’s just my opinion I would’ve put Metal Gear Solid on this list where you did put a PS1 title already. The real shocker though is YOU DIDN’T PUT DOOM!!!!
These are all fantastic choices, I think you hit pretty much every target! If I were to suggest five more to make it 25, I would suggest these: Donkey Kong Country, Wario Land 4, Kirby's Adventure, Contra III: Alien Wars, and The Legendary Axe.
Great video! I would love to see more like this one; where you make a list of recommended retro games. I would love to see a video of which of these retro games can be bought on the Switch.
You teased it in the intro, but Devil's Crush on the tg16 is a must. Pokemon pinball, both gbc and gba versions, are quick diversions too--and you can work on filling up your pokedex. And, although not quite in the universal classics category, the Bonk games on tg16 are great platformers for those who want some variety beyond the Mario games. Also, no shmups on the list? A few faves include Blazing Lazers, Cybercore, Final Soldier,/Super Star Soldier, all on the tg16. yeah, i was a turbo guy back in the day.
Oh yes, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, a Sega game I first tried on my Mom's cousin's computer. 😀 It was such a great experience for me to use 3 different elemental shields in the right situations after playing Sonic The Hedgehog 2. 🙂 If you have the original S3&K rom file, you can use the Sonic 3 A.I.R. named fan remaster on Windows, Linux and Android platforms. Not only can you enjoy the Sonic game set in a variety of locations on a widescreen screen resolution, but you can also use a variety of unlockable features. 🙂
Very nice list, sir. A nice mix of classics and sleeper hits. I'd be remiss if I didn't recommend the TENGEN release of Ms. Pac-Man on NES. It's a very arcade-accurate port for the hardware, plus it's got some really fun options to change the mazes and expand the gameplay. In my opinion, it's the superior Pac-Man experience on NES.
Lots of great choices here! As far as other Atari 2600 games that still hold up, I've been playing a lot of Spider Fighter and Mountain King. I'm biased on Mountain King because I played the heck out of this game as a kid. You have to get used to the jumping, and you might have to look up how the game works in the first place, but in my old-gamer biased opinion it absolutely holds up as an early platformer with a unique gameplay loop.
Cybernator is a great play on SNES, you can literally jump right in and have a great time in under five minutes as a new player. 10/10 arcade mech game where every few missions you get a jetpack and it becomes a side scrolling shooter. Hold L1 to steady your aim on level 2 and make it exactly like Galaga.
Me, sitting down for a lunch break at work: “I could go for a new tech dweeb video right n- oh hell yeah” Also, interesting choice with Metroid Fusion! Great game, and I suspected the series would show itself on your list, but surprised it wasn’t Zero Mission or Super! I think the folks in r/Metroid might wanna have a word with you haha. Great video as always!
Castlevania: SOTN is my favorite game of all time, The amount of love I have for that game is insurmountable lol . Another PS1 game I recommend and maybe a future DGS game we can do that Is amazing is Valkyrie Profile.
Great list. I'd add Shining Force 2 for the Genesis to this list. I play it every few years and always love it. Lovers of Fire Emblem will have a great time with it.
I liked all the games on your list at one time or another (except MvC, but that's a me thing), but the one that surprisingly brought the biggest smile to my face was Blades of Steel. I loved that game as a kid and never liked hockey, or any other hockey games for that matter. Nostalgia triggered!

Similarly, his Outrun recommendation is for the Genesis version, and his Pac-Man recommendation is for the NES version (Though any versions of them are probably pretty good.)

Thanks, needed this, got thousands of retrogames, just didn't know where to start
Love it! This intro is spot on TD. You nailed it. One missing on the list here Bubble Bobble…NES or MD version. So good
I was sick these days and picked up my miyoo mini. A lot of games I played last weekend were in this list, great choices!
Been binge watching your videos. You sir have passion for your content and it doesn’t just show, it shines. The conformation bias for purchasing the oled steamdeck is also pretty cool.
Gotta say, really appreciate this video (and the rest). Nailed the demographic (me) and useful, fun info. Keep it up. ❤
I thought you were gonna recommend games I haven't played? These are all amazing games I have played! Great list!
Lol. Best intro ever! Every part of it rang true for me 🤦
I subscribed just because of that.
Welcome!
Here are some of my additions:
Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Super Metroid (SNES)
Mega Man X (SNES)
Super Mario RPG (SNES)
Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES)
Punch Out! (NES)
TMNT II: The Arcade Game (NES)
I could go on and on, but I think that'll do for now.
I've been playing Gran Turismo 2 a lot on my MM+. It is still one of the best racing games ever made, even for todays standards.
Yes, this list is missing PS1 racing classics. The move to 3D made a massive difference for racing games.
Many notes were taken! Thanks for this man! 😎
It definitely can. Both great games!
Most cheaper budget handhelds struggle running DS games. Chrono Trigger for the SNES is your best option.
@@dscottplays4700 I think there is also a patch for the SNES version that mirrors some of the changes introduced into the DS version as well.
@@mattb6522WHAT?! What’s it called?!
@@omegamanGXE I think it is called "Chrono Trigger Complete".
Some of my go to retro games are:
Metal Warriors (SNES)
EVO: Search for Eden (SNES)
Contra Hard Corps (Genesis)
NARC (NES)
Wow, I never realized that you could play a small amount of F-Zero while playing Wario Ware, Inc.
A fantastic list! So many awesome games on this list.
I understand you can't add them all, otherwise this video would be 4 hours long, but a few of my additions would be:
1. WarGames: Defcon 1 on the PS1
2. Secret of Mana on the SNES
3. Golden Sun on the GBA
4. Faceball 2000 on the SNES
5. Cyborg Justice on the Genesis
6. Ecco the Dolphin and/or Tides of Time on the Sega CD
7. Almost any Bomberman game in the 8 - 16 bit era
WarioWare Inc. was such an absolute banger. Props for including it :))
My new fav channel right here. Thanks for the great content bro.
This was extremely helpful. Great video. Much appreciated
Great video dweeb! Got it exactly on the right time. I wish you'll do a video about retro games for steam deck.
A unique racing game from Blizzard of all devs was Rock n Roll Racing for SNES. Always loved that game. Think a 16-bit sequel to RC-Pro Am, in a Sci-Fi setting, with an 80s Rock soundtrack.
YES! Amazing game!
Great review, even for a Canadian. Keep it up, brother.
Thanks for the recommendations :)
BTW, this is not a diss, I'm all for living and letting live, I just found it funny that you say Merry-oh instead of Mario, yet in the caption you wrote "I say "Mario"" :)
I like your list
I think MegaMan 3 is superior to 2 as well, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles IS my favourite game ever. Glad you mentioned that one over 2 as well
I personally prefer Mario Bros 3 over Super Mario World, but that’s just my opinion
I would’ve put Metal Gear Solid on this list where you did put a PS1 title already.
The real shocker though is YOU DIDN’T PUT DOOM!!!!
Hmmm the only ones I don't have are Outrun, Blades of Steel, and Pitfall. I'm cool with that tho. Thanks for the list techdweeb 😁
These are all fantastic choices, I think you hit pretty much every target! If I were to suggest five more to make it 25, I would suggest these:
Donkey Kong Country, Wario Land 4, Kirby's Adventure, Contra III: Alien Wars, and The Legendary Axe.
Solid additions 👍
Great video! I would love to see more like this one; where you make a list of recommended retro games. I would love to see a video of which of these retro games can be bought on the Switch.
Hard to argue with this BIG ESSENTIALS LIST!!
Not a sports guy, but Blades of Steel was one of my all-time favorite vs games to play with my friends.
Great list. Glad my favorite Metroid, Fusion made the list!
I dont think i watch “some” of your video i think a bunch and repeatedly keep posting man
Great to see quite a few of my faves made your list ! Keep up the great work!
I love these videos man I’m always looking for new games to play on my handhelds
Oh yes, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, a Sega game I first tried on my Mom's cousin's computer. 😀
It was such a great experience for me to use 3 different elemental shields in the right situations after playing Sonic The Hedgehog 2. 🙂
If you have the original S3&K rom file, you can use the Sonic 3 A.I.R. named fan remaster on Windows, Linux and Android platforms.
5:00 "In my opinion. Which is the best opinion" What a legend xD
Me, sitting down for a lunch break at work: “I could go for a new tech dweeb video right n- oh hell yeah”
Also, interesting choice with Metroid Fusion! Great game, and I suspected the series would show itself on your list, but surprised it wasn’t Zero Mission or Super! I think the folks in r/Metroid might wanna have a word with you haha.
Great video as always!
"secret second family"....ha ha ha ha 0:26
Pretty solid list TD... I still have to play Crono Trigger.
I guarantee you'll love it.
DOOM (Seriously, i cannot believe you left out DOOM)
Thunderforce IV
Final Fantasy Tactics
Tekken 3
Mega Man X
Speedball
Advance Wars
Ys 1 +2 Chronicles
Super Metroid
Chaos Engine
Secret of Monkey Island
A Link to the Past
Breath of Fire III
Metal Gear Solid
