Everyone in the know says to break it on a soft surface such as the soil or a mound of dirt and not an concrete .It breaks cleaner more often.

The purpose of breaking it on a soft surface isn't for a clean break. Its to ensure you don't break the hard surface such as the driveway, sidewalk, or current brick work you're standing on.
