How to cut a brick in half lengthways | cut brick slips

- Cutting a brick in half is easy and can be done using a club hammer and bolster chisel, but if you need to cut the brick lengthways it is much more difficult. Using the Rage 3 sliding mitre saw fitted with a diamond blade it is possible to cut bricks lengthways as long as a suitable jig is made to hold the bricks whilst cutting them. I have made two videos showing how to make each jig which will be edited and uploaded soon. By using a jig and the Rage 3 sliding mitre saw with a diamond blade you can even cut your own brick slips very quickly and easily.

Great jig. Not tried the diamond blade yet, looks like it leaves a nice cut. Might not be the quickest route if using slips over a large areas though! :-)
+The Restoration Couple Yes, this is not a fast method but it gives a good result. Thanks for the comment ;-)
Great solution, thanks for the video!

You are welcome.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Great video, very useful for cutting redbrick thin veneers!
I'm glad the video helped
Thanks for the comment 👍
this channel is better than most forums on the internet
Thanks ;-)
Now after watching this I will just by them pre cut to clad a block wall in the garden. Imaging having to do 500 + of these at home. The dust alone is terrible lol
Obviously if you need 500 of them, you would buy them in specially.
These were needed for a builder who was building an extension and only needed 10 or 20
He used this saw and cut them, so that he did not have to wait weeks for the slips to arrive ;-)
Good video great bit of kit , i was expecting alot more dust than that.
I've recently cut some masonry using this saw, but left the stuff outside for a few days. The rain soaks into the masonry and really keeps the dust down.

I like the Evolution Rage tools. They are reliable and good value for money.
+Mark Garth Yes they are great value for money. Thanks for the comment
Nice one. I've always used a stihl saw for this in the past, with either my own or a willing (stupid?) mate's foot holding it still on the ground for me. I think your way is a bit safer!
+Chewy At least you have the sense to use your mates foot and not your own LOL.I'd try with the Stihl saw to be honest if I didn't have this machine. Thanks for the comment ;-)
great videos !
Thanks for the comment.
Nice video, just curious would the diamond blade be suitable for metals such as steel and aluminium as well? I already have the multi purpose and the steel blades but was wondering how the diamond ones would be
+Khalid Al-Kooheji
Thanks, the diamond blade will cut steel reinforced concrete - ua-cam.com/video/DPTO5KFTgO0/v-deo.html
The multi-purpose blade supplied with the machine will cut steel and aluminium easily- ua-cam.com/video/2lJV3wFzAYI/v-deo.html
nice accurate job it does too, better than the old stihl petrol grinder and nothing to hold it, i myself have a junior hacksaw and about 6 months spare time, what do you reckon?
+jusb1066 I think you might need a bigger hacksaw LOL.Thanks for the comment
Great video, could you link me to your video of that red clamp you used in the video, I remover watching your review on it a while back but I can't find it, it's the red reversible quick clamp
Remember*
+Faisal Y Thanks Faisal, it's here- ua-cam.com/video/sVt89DKMaAs/v-deo.html
Corners?
Can you fit an evolution blade onto a normal circular saw or mitre saw??
No I'm afraid you can't. Thanks for the comment.
Nice. That takes a while. How long will that blade last?
+justgivemethetruth Yes, it's not quick but gives a good cut.Not sure how long the blade will last, but normally diamond blades last a very long time- for me at least. Thanks for the comment
Can you please direct me to the link where you created the wooden jig?
+Rick Salman No problem, its here- ua-cam.com/video/okauOzfjQEM/v-deo.html
Could I do this with a chop saw and a diamond blade? I want to cut 2 to 3 mm slices widthwise so i can use a small handsaw to cut little bricks for an art project. I have a dewalt very similar to what you have, but it doesn't slide forward and backwards, only up and down. Thanks in advance for the help
It depends. The Evolution saws have high-torque gearboxes and run at the correct speed for the diamond blade.
Using a diamond blade on a machine at the wring speed can be very dangerous
Thanks for the comment
@@ultimatehandyman gotcha, I'll do a bit of digging on my model and see if it matches. What is the torque on your machine?
I'm not sure to be honest, but because these saws can cut metal, they use a slower speed/high torque gearbox.
Thanks for the comments
@@ultimatehandyman thank you so much for your quick responses. I really appreciate all the help. I'll just look up the model and see if anyone has done it before. Have a wonderful day!
@@Witchlord sorry but the rpm's on the DeWalt Saw's are way too high. The Evo saws are very slow rotation machines in comparison to standard chop saws. I own several different chop saws for cutting different materials instead of swapping out the blade. I love my Evo saw its my most used saw.
Saw this on display in Screwfix the other day.
The video, or the saw?
Thanks for the comment
Ultimate Handyman The saw
I need to cut some edging stone length ways.....Im using an angle grinder and its hard to get a straight cut!!
Yes, it's difficult with an angle grinder.
It's one of those things that gets easier with practice, once you get used to all of the dust!
Hello, I have a stihl cut off saw and I would like to make a jig for it so I can make small straight cuts. Basically it is to save me buying a tile saw. Any ideas on how I could do this. Thanks.
+ad cr
I'm sure it would be possible to make something.
Perhaps a jig that rests on the floor where you can use the stihl saw as you would do normally.
+Ultimate Handyman Hello, I was thinking the same thing. Stihl have jigs like these on their website but they are too expensive www.stihl.co.uk/brickjig/
Im not sure if these jigs just clamp the work, or if they allow you to run the saw up against the metal fence to ensure a straight cut.
Thanks
+ad cr
It looks like the blade runs against the fence to ensure a straight cut.
It would not be too difficult to knock something like that up, or you might be able to pick a cheap second hand one up.
Thank-you but...- why is it near impossible to buy a queen closer/king closer? For 'English bond' brick work -where I can buy the ready-made queen closers ? I've tried so many 'specialists'.
Good question!
I'm not sure about the answer though 🤔
No need to add water? Would it be a good idea to soak the brick in water to cut down on dust and heat?
I often use this saw to cut timber and metal, so tend to just put up with the dust 👍
Is that a standard miter saw with a special blade?
No, the Evolution saws are high torque. You can cut wood, metal or plastic with the supplied blade, but you can also fit a diamond blade for cutting masonry.
You can see the versatility of these saws in this video- ua-cam.com/video/x1_di0CTrtM/v-deo.html&t
Thanks for the comment 👍
how could you make a jig to do 45 degrees cut using an electric plane in mdf
+TheJeremyevans I'll have a think about that one. Thanks for the comment
at the moment i'm holding it by hand un using a turn table to rotate the circular mdf discs to do a 45 degree champer and it's very tiring *****
Is there anything else these things can't do!?
+Zed Man
I have to say that the Evolution Rage 3S is one of the most versatile machines I have ever used. I tend to do everything on this machine now including cutting slots in metal etc.
Thanks for the comment ;-)
Do u have a link for blade
shop.evolutionpowertools.com/collections/evolution-blades/products/rageblade210diamond
I think that's the correct blade. Just check the size on your saw before ordering ;-)
I just wish they sell half thickness size bricks
You can often buy brick slips, but not in all types of brick.
Thanks for the comment
Ultimate Handyman Took a trip to HomeDepot, they do have 1-1/2” thick brick.
I would prefer a wet cutter for this m8.
Wet cutting is not good for bricks as you can't lay them when they are wet. Thanks for the comment.
I think your just got layed my friend
***** you cant lay them? ha ha ha
@@ultimatehandyman you can lay them just fine, I soak or wet my bricks before I lay them in type s mortar with , a dab of concrete glue and a pinch of thinset, water is a masons best friend
its not really true then you can not lay when they are wet, you can but its a little bit difficult, anyway we are talking about cutting not laying, as your video shows, take care have fun
+Arpad Palyi
I'm not a bricklayer but a mate of mine is and stays away from wet cutters for that reason. He would much rather cut them dry and lay them straight away.
Thanks for the comment
You can tell that's a Blackburn/Accrington accent
Darwen 👍
Toooo much time consuming when you want to cover few hundred square feet
Yeah, this was for a mate, who only needed a handful of slips, but the builders’ merchants could not get hole of them for a few weeks 👍
The saw won’t last long with all the dust.
A mate of mine is a builder, he uses this all the time to cut bricks. He has been using his machine for 3 years +
As long as you clean the machine afterwards it will be fine ;-)
Thanks for the comment 👍
Is water required
No, but I recently cut a brick that had been left outside (so it was damp) and when I cut it there was virtually no dust!
If the bricks are dry there is a fair bit of dust.
Thanks for the comment
Ultimate Handyman thank you. Thinking of getting a blade for my table saw and building jig similar to yours so I can go through on one swipe. Or would you recommend doing half than flipping over.
@@MikeRobishaw wet saw with a sliding tray is the best for that type of cutting, much faster and cleaner, after about 5 cuts like this man is doing, blade will get hot and start to wobble , trust me I have been a brick mason over 20 years
I enjoy your videos and have learnt a lot but it's starting to look like the evolution brand advertising channel! Maybe feature some competitors and have some balance, the evolution brand have some nice features but I've found the quality isn't up there with Dewalt, Makita, Bosch etc and they are not far off price wise. Keep up the good work otherwise :)
+InterestCasual I'm afraid you can't install a diamond blade on any other brand of mitre saw (that I'm aware of)If Makita/Dewalt/Bosch want to send me some tools I will be more than happy to review them but I'm afraid I don't have the funds to go out spending £500 on other makes of saw to review. Thanks for the comment ;-)
+Ultimate Handyman fair enough mate, like all your vids anyway, thanks for replying
No problem. Thanks for the comments ;-)
Takes toooo long
This would be useful if I had a $hitload of money to blow…
You can always buy brick slips 😉
