Brilliant way to store the skins, especially rolling up the huge one! Sheer GENIUS, Jackie! And all of the skins and papers are gorgeous! When you brought out the Clear Levelling Gel, it reminded me of a horror story from a few months ago ~ my Russell Terrier, Rico (aka Devil Dog, aka Spawn O' Satan) bit a hole in the bottom of a big jug of CLG, which I had left on the floor, and had failed to notice the tooth marks before I put it back up on the wooden desk top (which was covered with 12-15 other jars of mediums), and a few days later I went into that room and saw that over 1/2 of the jug of CLG had emptied out of the jug and there was about 1/2" thick CLG all over the table top and the bottoms of all the other mediums! Only a tiny bit had dripped onto the floor, thank goodness! I was able to squeegee most of the gel off into a big measuring cup, and poured the CLG into another large container which had a lid, so much of the CLG was not wasted. Then I soaked the gel covered desk top with lightly diluted Murphy's Oil Soap, and it (eventually) removed 100% of the CLG from the table top, if you can believe it?? There was a lot of rubbing and scrubbing, rinse and repeat involved, but it did all come off!! I would have never thought of using Murphy's for something like this clean up, so thank you again, Jackie!!
OHMYGosh! I actually had to read this a couple of times to fully absorb what happened 😳🤯😂 Oh Rico - you silly little scalawag. I'm glad you weren't on vacation and that you caught it before it all dried. You know I am a true believer in the power of Murphy's Oil Soap - but this is incredible 😍 You should send them the story - maybe they'll gift you a lifetime supply 😂😂🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio That is a great idea, Jackie!! I will contact Murphy's to share the story! Rico continues to test the bounds of my patience on a daily (hourly) basis, and it's a miracle he hasn't killed himself yet with the items he has chewed up! But I love him SO MUCH despite his destructive antics! Who couldn't love that face?!?
Screeeeeeeeaaaaaaammmmm! How exciting! I discovered this once, when I accidentally rolled off paint onto A thin napkin I had mod podged. It was fabulous! I had no idea I could do it over so many mediums to get the translucent affect. Thank you.
About 10 years ago I played around with pouring paint and used many of the leftover drips and runs to make jewellery. It was fun. I got a bit bored with it though and moved on to something else. I think I still have a few skins stashed away somewhere. The coasters I made stuck together and got spoiled so I couldn't sell them. It took until very recently for them to stop sticking together and I didn't know what to coat them with to stop that. I like your way of storing them. Thanks for sharing.
Hi Margaret! Yes, I've heard of many people who make jewelry with the skins - I think it's a genius idea! I may do some testing to see what to put on top so that nothing sticks, even if stacked like the coasters likely were. I'll make sure to do a video on it. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio mostly I used them for earrings and fridge magnets with cabouchons on top so sticking wasn't a problem with them. The coasters I have been using myself and I have been thinking about how I can repair the spoiled bits. 😀❤
Sunday noon with Jackie in best experimental form and flow. That´ s simply great. I love the big skin. The colors are so vibrant and shiny! I also love, how the results made you shine too, dear Jackie 🥳. Love from Britta in snowy Bavaria ☃
Thank you always, Britta! I really loved the colors on this one, too and hope to use that skin for many projects to come. Stay warm and cozy in Bavaria ❄️🥰
@PaintedPaperStudio I just used an intricate branches stencil on the gel plate. Let positive image dry. Brayered two layers of gel medium over it It's drying now, but should peel off the plate as clear with dark branches.
Incredibly helpful Jackie! I've had mixed success with everything but the levelling gel - ironically I've got a couple big containers in my stash - so when the opportunity presents itself you can be sure I'll be giving it a try!! ❤❤❤
I love how thin and transparent these skins look! I have made skins before but they turned out thicker. I have also made skins using the acrylic pour method to get cells for a fish (actually a trout) collage I plan on making. It would be a great effect to give my fish an under water look using the transparent skins you showed us today! Thank you for your inspiration 😊
You'll have to let me know how that goes for you, Cindy! I made a fish collage using skins about 12 or so years ago - it's still one of my favorite pieces because of what the skins added. Maybe I'll post a pic of it someday 🥰
This is fascinating! I've been thinking about making acrylic skins lately. This technique looks so fun and more sensible compared to other techniques I've seen. I'm going to do this for sure. Your painted papers are inspiring me to to do that as well! Thank you!
This was great! I can't wait to try it. When you attach a skin to a piece of mixed media paper, do you use another layer of the same gel you used to make the skin?
Hi Pat! Yes, you can use the same medium to apply the skin to the paper, or you can experiment with other mediums or glues - anything that dries clear should do the job. Have fun experimenting with it. 🥰
These are gorgeous! I had tried skins before but didn’t know about adding the various mediums. And the roller trick is ingenious! Thanks for a fun and VERY informative video.
I made a few of these a long time ago and have them stored with my collage papers but could never figure out how to actually use them….loved seeing your process and application for these!
Oh, I love that beautiful huge skin❣️ I’ve had many accidental skin splotches that are so much fun to use. Thanks for this enjoyably colorful and informative video. 👍😍 💚🩷💜🧡🩵💛❤️
Hi Gabrielle! Yes, Once they are dry I peel them off so I can take a look at both sides. Then I roll them (or stack them) in the poly-coated freezer paper until I need them. If I roll them, I usually write notes about the colors on the outside of the roll - it's a big time saver when you have a ton of rolls 😂🥰
Hi Jackie! I’ve recently discovered your videos and love them! You’ve inspired me to take my paper making to a whole new level! Thank you! My question is regarding your squeeze bottles. I have not had good luck with longevity of my mixes when stored this way. Any tips? What brand are you using? Thanks for any assistance!
Thank you for your kind words, Lois! The squeeze bottles in this video are not my favorite because of the screw cap - however, my self-leveling gel mix has happily lived in that bottle for almost 3 years 😳. My favorite squeeze bottles are condiment bottles - I love them! amzn.to/4gjmhDQ . I hope this helps 🥰
Now this was fun! Thanks for sharing, and especially the experiments! I've been meaning to try mixing my watercolor with an acrylic medium, since I'd stocked up on the colors that had been discontinued, but not in acrylics. Quin burnt scarlet, Quin gold and Quin burnt orange. I'll try to remember to come back and let you know how it goes. I'll try the pouring and airbrush mediums first. Really curious if W/C granulation happens when you mix with an acrylic medium. -Wouldn't that be so cool! Thanks for sparking our curiosities! 🎨🖌
Golden has watercolour mediums and grounds. Pop over to Just Paint and search for "QoR Mediums and Grounds" The usual binder used for watercolour is Gum Arabic. It has it's problems. Golden's QoR watercolours use Aquazol which is far better for a binder. On a gel plate, you can use QoR watercolours just like acrylic paints and they don't bead up -- that makes me happy.
Wow Jackie I had never heard of skins before. It was fascinating to watch and learn. And the results were beautiful. How do you then attach them to your work? Thank you for sharing. I was doing some collage papers almost 2 weeks ago and fell in my little art space and broke my ankle. This video has been the first I have been able to watch while in hospital. I’m so glad it was this and it made me happy. ❤️
Glenda - I am so sorry about your ankle and having to stay in the hospital! I hope you are on the mend and able to return to normal activities again soon 💜 As for how to apply the skins to your work, you can use the same medium that you wade the skin with, or any medium/adhesive that dries clear should work, too. Feel better, friend 🥰
If you want to have a skin like at 13:58 for a design to put on top of a repainted canvas or paper... is that possible? Will it peel in one piece Also I suppose maybe a small Polaroid of the skin stapled to the rolled up skin will help ond find it if you do dozens of these Great tip at 20:50 on skin thickness When pulling these up,is it s good idea to use a palatte knife to help you try to keep all the janky edge pieces entact to thd larger skin?
All great questions! 1). Yes, you could pull up the "squiggle" skin, but I would probably coat the entire squiggle area (including the blank areas) with a couple of layers of a gloss gel medium (most likely self-leveling), let it dry, then pull the squiggle to use as a design element. 2). The polaroid idea is genius! 3). Yes, you can use a palette knife to get the extra bits - I'll use whatever will do the job, including my favorite tweezers!
