that unbalanced composition is my favorite as well and i see clearly two penguins there. this inspired me to make abstract figures of me and my granddaughter.
Hi Jackie, loved this video following your creative process. The composition of each panel is lovely and the unbalanced one reminded me of a pair of funky penguins! Thanks for sharing.
hey Jackie.. Maybe I missed the info, but please, why do you wet the papers before you stick them to your panels with the gel medium? I love all the topics you tackle on your channel so helpful and just wonderful to watch. Thank you ❤😊
Hi Kreativ! Some papers work better in collage if you wet them first. The moisture expands the paper fibers so that the paper lays flat when gluing down. It can reduce wrinkles in collage. The other reason is some of the papers will go transparent when gluing them down. I prefer to get those papers wet first to help them become more transparent. Does this help? If you want to see my experiment with translucent & transparent papers here’s the link: ua-cam.com/video/f2Ov0teTTYs/v-deo.html Thank you so much for asking such a great question. 🥰
Jackie, thank you for sharing you processes! I am all about processes and what I can incorporate in "mine"! I agree with the yummy transparency of collage papers. I always want to incorporate elements of composition and sometimes it is intuitive for me but other times I struggle and I like that you are intentionally working that way here today.
Magnifique, merci pour ces cours. Parfois, j'ai l'impression que vous avez terminé le tableau parceque c'est beau et non, vous continuez à superposer des couches et c'est juste Magnifique, Dieu vous bénisse,
Thank you, Nicola! It was really fun, and I can't wait to get to the "excavating" stage - I never know what I'll discover. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment. 🥰
So good to see your painted papers become so much more. Sunburst, Landscape and Penguin Friends. Please forgive my naming of your pieces - these are the names they received in my head while watching. ☺ Landscape is my favourite. Are we allowed to have favourites? It definitely speaks to me the most of the three. I can see where you are coming from with the water soluble chalk when you say sexy. It adds so much depth and definition and changes it up so many levels to something else that you can't get just by adding painted papers and paint. So fun to watch you create. Thank you for sharing this with us. I always look forward to your videos. I hope you are well. I hope you get to enjoy your Easter weekend to the fullest :). 🐤🥚🎁🎉 Oh and love n hugs to Archie. What a lovely boy! :)

Hello Jackie, happy Easter 🦋🐣 I really enjoyed this video, I love collages 😊 thank you for referring David Kessler, I already got the PDF. By the way, Blackbird is also one of my favourite Beatles song, I’ll have to listen to Beyoncé’s version. My Lola says hello to Archie 🐶
Hello Lola & Fran - Happy Easter to you! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video. I think the Kessler PDF is so helpful for compositional reminders. Thanks for being here, Fran! 🥰
Wonderful outcomes (at this stage... lol) Love the encouragement to explore and try new techniques especially around composition. Thank you (as always) for sharing your time in the studio. Be well. ♥♥♥ And love to Archie!
I LOVED this video!! I was literally getting a little nervous bc I didn’t know where you were going, but actually told myself, “trust the process” a few times. 😂 As the layers were being built, I was smiling bc they were all turning out so beautifully & I loved the creative freedom this process gave! I’m an overthinker & I have become creatively paralyzed bc I’m afraid to “lose” some of my favorite papers in something that I don’t end up loving. Needing to get it right the first time has held me back from exploring & growing, but bc I’ve seen your process & how BEAUTIFULLY they turned out (even before they’re “done”, I have a new confidence to try this myself!! This was soooo helpful for me, so thank you for making this video!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻😍♥️
Gina, what an awesome comment! It makes me so happy that your confidence is boosted. I get paralyzed sometimes, too. But when I remember to trust the process and trust myself, it's easier to continue. I encourage you to use your superpower as an "overthinker," but maybe direct it towards exploration rather than fear of losing the papers you love. Thank you so much for being here! 🥰
Thank you for asking, Jackie! I am finally on the mend after a week of oral Prednisone, whatever I am allergic to did not even respond to the steroid shot a week ago, that nasty ass rash just kept on spreading everywhere!! Oh, and THANKS for the link to Beyonce's "Blackbird"!!! Blew me right out of the water!!! xoxoxoxoxo. D@@PaintedPaperStudio
@@deannahall2032 I'm really happy to hear you're doing better - that was a rough one! I agree about "Blackbird" - I was unprepared for how much I loved her version. 🥰

Thank you for sharing with us again. Your work is beautiful. Just wanted to share, I attended an in person workshop with David Kessler a few years ago. He is a wonderful art instructor.
This is so fun to watch Jackie, thank you 🙏🏻. I love some of the other comments in what can be seen in the pieces, definitely two penguins looking out at the sunburst across the landscape. Each one is different and yet belong together as a story. Looking forward to their next stage. Love how you refer to the tailors chalk 😆 reminds me of a badass but good underneath character with a 5 o’clock shadow in a film that everyone secretly loves 😆. Big hugs of love to you and lovely Archie 🙏🏻🤗🙏🏻
OMGosh Andrea! I'm going to reserve the right to use "badass" and "5 o'clock shadow" as names for future paintings with the tailor's chalk. 😂 Archie sends hugs back 😍🥰
I'd love that, Hope! If you really want a belly laugh watch the video coming out this Saturday - I even made myself laugh. Thank you for always being you! 🥰
What a beautiful art! You are so talented and creative.... it turned out significantly awesome ❤ I could see the beautiful sun, sea water and penguins. Thanks for sharing this different way of art.
Hello Jackie: I love this video. You mention that these are the base which you plan to sand down and cover over again. I would like to see this video. Will you be showing this process?

It's interesting, Diana - there was one moment when working on that panel that I got a vision for much much larger piece - like 36" x 36" or 48" x 48". The great news is that I took pictures along the way and have the video to reference when I get to it. I'll be sure to let you know when I'm working on it. 🥰
Hi Jackie, Really enjoyed your video on Practicing comp and layering. Curious to see what you finally did with the three pieces . Did you create a video/s showing your process to completion? Thanks, susan K

Hello, dear Jackie! Lovely and wild layering going on in your studio with sweet Archie keeping you company 😍! So wonderful watching your creative process! Juices are flowing in a sexy way indeed 😀! The close-up at 12:05 was so awesome ... felt like diving into your art. Can't wait for the additional love all three panels will get from you! The unbalanced one is my personal fav at the moment. Aloha from Berlin ❤🧡💛💚💜
Thank you, Queen! That moment, when the paper melted into the panel, was maybe the coolest single moment I've captured on film - I'm so glad you like it too! BTW - the unbalanced one was my favorite as well, and now it's all covered up (but it will be a good thing 🤞🏼. Thank you so much for watching, and Archie sends his love 🥰
Very fun! The unbalanced composition looks like birds or penguins. I'm a novice at this mixed media/collage thing and I always fall in love with a layer and then don't want to cover it up. I struggle with the idea of putting down layer upon layer upon layer that will not be seen.
Hi Gail! Yes, I totally see penguins, too 😀. In regard to layering, (usually) if I fall in love - truly in love - with a layer, I won't cover it - at least not all the way. I make a lot of my creative decisions based on how I *feel*. It's my barometer when creating. The more you create, the more you will trust your creative senses, and covering up layers (if that's what you want to do) won't be hard. Thank you so much for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. 🥰
I'm glad you have your answer, Jenyne - that little spray bottle is the second most used tool I have in the studio - a billion and one uses for it! Thank you so much for being here and taking the time to ask a question. 🥰
Hurray! A Jackie-Easter-Sunday-Video And what a colorful journey indeed! Before I forget: I love the third piece, the "unbalanced" one. I think of two penguinelike beings and how the big one and the small one both look in the same direction and make me curious to see, what will appear from there. I just had to save them with a screen shot, to go on loving them for the case, that you will cover them up (weep). I love this video and of course I looked up the artist you mentioned: Mark Kessler. I am just at a point, where the teachings of both of you are extremely helpful with a painting that made me get stuck. Thank you so much dear Jackie for showing and sharing your process. It´s always a pleasure, because it infects me to play. 🥳Hugs from Britta
Britta, thank you for always being such an enthusiastic friend and for supporting my experimentations! The unbalanced one really took me by surprise and the penguins appreciate being recognized for what they turned out to be 😂 Happy Easter, Britta and I wish you a lot of play time in your studio this week! 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio You´re sooo welcome Jackie. Have nice easter moments too. Meet the easter bunny and introduce him to Archie and the penguins. Hey: "Archie and the penguins" - wouldn´t that be a gorgeous name for a band? 🤣
Hi Karen, I'm so glad you're here and what a great question! I don't know how it is with other creatives, but I keep going until it makes me feel happy. I'm not being flippant, I mean when I literally experience the feeling of joy in my body and my brain tells me to stop. Sometimes I go too far, which doesn't feel good. When that happens I tend to walk away for a time. Sometimes that's a day or two, sometimes it's years. Other times I cover it up and start over, which makes me happy. I'm not precious with anything I work on until I feel that joy. Such a great question - thank you for asking. 🥰
Christina - I love that! I hope that every gets excited when they create. I swear, some days it's like aerobics for me 😂. Thank you so much for being here 🥰
I am so happy I found you on UA-cam! You are so inspiring for me! Love how you are creating beautiful art! I am working in a very similar way and at the moment I am a bit stuck in my painting progress because for first time I am working on a 120 cm per 80cm canvas. On a small piece it’s much easier to find the right way for a composition… it’s also easier to change if I don’t like it….what would you recommend for a big canvas?
Oh my goodness, DeSabin - that is a very large piece you are working on ! I have a couple ideas. If you are working against a wall, you could try using a little artist tape (or sticky glue dots) on the back of your collage pieces, arrange them and rearrange them until you find a composition you like. If you are working horizontally, you could try to take a picture from above and see how the composition looks as you go. You would probably need a ladder to get high enough to capture the whole piece. I love working large but it really does present challenges. Good luck, and let me know how it goes. 🥰
Hi Jacqueline! Thank you very much, I'm glad you enjoyed it. It's pouring buckets here ☔️ so Archie is laying across my legs and helping me respond to comments. 🥰

Great question, Robin, and I'm sorry that wasn't clear. Yes, the gesso went right on top of the panel, and I think I put two layers on. I hope this helps clear it up. 🥰
Hi Bonnie, I'm sure you can. I don't have ModPoge so I haven't tested if it will make the medical exam paper or the coffee filter paper transparent. If you give it a try, please let me know your results. 🥰
Thank you for the tutorial, Jackie! I have a beginner question regarding layering. I see so many artists creating a nice layer and then covering it completely. Why is that? My silly thoughts are like... if you're going to cover it, then why make it pretty? Thank you again :)
Great question, Suzanka! There are many different reasons and I can't speak for other artists, but I create layer after layer to make background texture for the piece I'm working on. Sometimes, the collage or painting does not cover everything below it, so you get a sense of history. In this video I was simply doing an exercise in practicing composition - not creating a finished piece of art. We can only get better by practicing. Many people practice composition in their sketchbooks, which is great. Today I chose to practice it while building up layers. Does that help? 🥰
Hi Kim - thank you for your kind words. I am currently working on a couple of workshops that I will be announcing soon to my email community. If you want to be notified when they are available, sign up for my mailing list here. 🥰 painted-paper-studio.ck.page/413e731400
I just don't understand the layering of all those different (and to me, precious and lovely) papers, if they aren't exposed to any degree by sanding away or any other process, at the end. To me it seems a waste of something that was created but will never be seen. I totally DO understand it if they are exposed somehow through the process or at the end. But if they aren't going to be, couldn't you just layer with plain paper to get your texture?
Hi Cat, I'm so happy you're here and that you watched the video. I have a little different spin on this. There are very few of the papers that I create that I consider precious - for me the art creation happens in the moment - from the feeling I get when I paint a single piece of paper. Sometimes I'll add that piece to a collage or painting so that everyone can see it. Other times it is buried beneath other papers or paints never to be seen by anyone but me - and I am ok with that. The focus of this exercise was practicing, experimenting and exploring composition to train my creative brain to recognize what looks and feels good to me. It's also what I encourage others to do when creating. You are absolutely right, I could have stacked plain papers to get the décollaged and sanded look. But where would the fun be in that? I love questions like this because it gives me an opportunity to try to explain what it feels like for me to create. Thank you for asking. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio Yes, I guess how we feel about what we create and it's 'preciousness' is an entirely personal thing! It's what makes our art unique to each and every one of us :)
@@PaintedPaperStudio Hi Jackie, any pics of what you ended up doing to these? I was hoping to see what they ultimately became, especially if you did any sanding to reveal the under-layers. :-)

Hello, technique question- i notice that you sprayed some of the papers with water before you adhered it on that first layer. Did you spray all of them, and if not, why did you spray the ones that you did? Thanks! 🎨👩🏻🎨
Great question, Susan! I did spray some, but not all. Sometimes I spray with water so the paper fibers expand before I glue them down - it helps to prevent the wrinkling that can occur when collaging. Some papers are thicker or heavier and may not need the moisture to relax the fibers. I will (almost) always spray any paper that will be translucent or transparent when it is glued down - I just think it helps. You can see that in last weeks video ua-cam.com/video/f2Ov0teTTYs/v-deo.html Thank you so much for watching. 🥰
Thank you so much for your reply. I really enjoy your approach to your artwork and love seeing all the techniques you use for making your papers. It helps me to remind myself not to be so rigid in my thought and experimentation with techniques. I also really appreciate you thoughtfully listing, the materials and supplies that you use.🤩🎨
Why matte gel? We just had a "comment" conversation re using liquid gloss medium for the best thing to lay down papers. (This what keeps my head spinning :) and too many jars and bottles in my studio.
Hi Betsy - I'm sorry for the confusion. In the reply to your comment on the acrylic inks video I said that matte medium is my workhorse, meaning it's the one I use maybe 90% of the time. I also said that if I had to pick only one, I'd buy the matte medium. I hope that clears it up. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio Yes, it does....I realize now that you were talking about using gloss medium when putting down acrylic INK pieces, and matte medium when putting down acrylic PAINT pieces, but really you could use matte medium for ALL of it. Thank you!
Hi, lovely work. Can I ask you, if your dog has something in his eyes. Sometimes I use eyedrop in my dogs eye, also cleaner, because sometimes the eyes became dry or dirty. Also some dogs has allergies against grass or tree pollen.
Thank you for asking, Eliane! He does have a version of dry eye and takes 1 type of drop in the morning and a different drop at night. Remarkably, at 13 1/2 he does not have cataracts. I love that you looked at him close enough to see 🥰
Hi Robin! No, I din't spritz all of them. I spritzed all the papers that I knew would go transparent with the gloss medium (from last week's video). The other papers that I spritzed were ones that I knew would get super wrinkly when glued down. The moisture relaxes the fibers in the paper and there's less wrinkling. Heavier papers typically don't need the spritz. Does that help? 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio oh that’s exciting as I have many of the framed ones . Only burning on wood at this time with wood from nature 🙏🏻 Thankyou soooo much - love your style
Great question MaryLou! Quite a few of the pieces of paper on that panel were papers that I knew (from last week's video) would go transparent if I used the gloss medium. I used the matte gel medium for almost everything else. Does that help? 🥰

Hi Kathleen - welcome to the channel! Thank you for asking - I am not currently selling my work. Once or twice a year I may have a pop-up shop, but I'm not planning one for this year. Here's the link to a playlist that has them all: ua-cam.com/play/PLgIXaAju7by2Iozi0hSaj0eUzbrDjAIVv.html As for the papers, yes, I spray them on the back with water because it helps make the particular papers I'm using go transparent when I apply it to collage with gloss medium. Could you tell me what the black chalk thing is called ? I want to purchase this but never heard or saw this before except the crayon looks me chalk . Thank you 😊
I don’t understand the term composition. lol! I don’t have a formal training so I hear this word on several videos of artists and I haven’t a clue what it means exactly. Hehe!
Hi Taylor - this is such a great question, and one I can hardly do justice to in answering. Generally, composition is considered as the arrangement of elements within a work of art - but that probably doesn't help that much. The video I'm linking to here (not mine) does a great job of explaining composition, and I think it may help. Please let me know if it does. 🥰 ua-cam.com/video/tyb6r0sekXU/v-deo.htmlsi=SZGJ4NjJE--vh-3E
HI Jackie! A little late for this one! But I wish someone could explain the value of what you just did in the finish piece of art ... Everyone says layers and don't worry because it won't show in the final results ... They also say that it adds texture and history to the finished piece... But if no one can see it, why bother?!? Thank you 🙏🧡
Spoiler alert, Chloé - you'll see next week 😍. When you build up layers below, you don't see them as they are but you see bit's and parts of them which adds to the visual interest of the piece. It's a quality that's hard to describe, but once you see it you can't "un-see" it. Whenever I see it in a gallery or museum, I'll stare at it for ages, trying to figure out what they used. Does that help? - PS you are doing so well on your 108 day challenge 🥰👏🏼🥰
Hi! I'm new to your channel, and my love of collage brought me here. I have a question. On one of the pieces you mentioned that you were going to put a liitle bit of oil pastel on it. Will that end any further work on the piece cuz of the oil over acrylic but not acrylic over oil? And also will you be fixing the oil pastel? Thanks in advance! 😊
Hi Pam - great question! It is not going to end the piece, and in fact it will help the excavation stage (next Saturday's video). If this were going to be a nearly-done piece I would not be able to go over it with more acrylics and expect them to adhere. In this case the oil pastels are serving (somewhat) as a colorful resist. Thank you for watching! 🥰
Hilarious - well, at first I thought I would leave them until the next stage, but I really couldn't do it. So I grabbed a straight edge blade and did a rough cut. When I get to the sanding stage, I'll be more precise. 🥰
I don't understand why you would go to all that effort and then cover up those papers! I actually really like what you've produced. I don't understand why you wouldn't just leave them there though.
Hi Susan, I'm so happy you're here and that you watched the video. The short answer is that the exercise was twofold - practicing composition and training my body to recognize what feels good to me while I create. The longer answer is that there are very few of the papers that I create that I consider precious - for me, the art creation happens in the moment - from the feeling I get when I paint a single piece of paper. Sometimes I'll add that piece to a collage or painting so that everyone can see it. Other times, it is buried beneath other papers or paints, never to be seen by anyone but me - and I am ok with that.

I hope you give it a try, Donna - it's so interesting how it makes my brain think differently. 🥰
What sizes are those?

Thank you, Queen! That moment, when the paper melted into the panel, was maybe the coolest single moment I've captured on film - I'm so glad you like it too! BTW - the unbalanced one was my favorite as well, and now it's all covered up (but it will be a good thing 🤞🏼. Thank you so much for watching, and Archie sends his love 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio Cuddles for Archie!
So fun! I’m certainly inspired! What’s in the spray bottle?
Oops, I read more comments and found thorough discussions. Thank you!
How do you know when to stop? First time watching you and loving the freedom your process allows . . .
Love this
Thank you, Linda!
Jackie, OMG! I love your papers but especially your reactions! Looks like me when I do a gelli print session all by myself! 😅

thank you so much for this experience!!! I ❤ it .....

Great question, Robin, and I'm sorry that wasn't clear. Yes, the gesso went right on top of the panel, and I think I put two layers on. I hope this helps clear it up. 🥰
@@PaintedPaperStudio thank you so much.

I am so enjoying your videos. I love your art and way of teaching. Do you do any online classes? I don't see any listed, but just wondered.

Hi there! I just stumbled upon you channel and WOW!! You are an amazing artist! Pure magic! ❤️
Thank you, Jude! I'm so happy you're here and that this video connected with you - (it's one of my favorites). 🥰

Thank you!

@@PaintedPaperStudio muito obrigada por responder! Ótimo final de semana! 🎨
So much fun to watch :-) So you spritz all the pieces before adhering them?

Well then I can't wait for next week's video!!! Thank you... It's harder than I thought but very instructive in so many ways!

There is a direct link to his site in the description of the video. If that doesn't work, let me know. And a very Happy Easter to you, too!
😅How did you deal with the pieces that hang off the edges?
Hilarious - well, at first I thought I would leave them until the next stage, but I really couldn't do it. So I grabbed a straight edge blade and did a rough cut. When I get to the sanding stage, I'll be more precise. 🥰
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻🎨
The focus of this exercise was practicing, experimenting, and exploring composition to train my creative brain to recognize what looks and feels good to me. It's also what I encourage others to do when creating. I love questions like this because it gives me an opportunity to try to explain what it feels like for me to create. Thank you for asking. 🥰

Why do you spray with water first?
Hi Laura! 🥰

Merci ! Tissus paper queen. Great interesting pieces - i love the fat men 😮
Thank you, Anne! Your generosity means so much to me. 😍 The fat men were my favorites 🥰
Why were you spraying your paper at beginning ??
Hi Cinnamon! If you want to see my experiment with translucent & transparent papers here’s the link: ua-cam.com/video/f2Ov0teTTYs/v-deo.html 🥰

yes Thankyou makes sense .
The unbalanced piece is exactly what I want to do in my journals. It will be on papers already printed on rather than on canvases
The unbalanced composition is generally my favorite of all compositions - I'm sure a therapist would have all sorts of things to say about that 😂😂
Hi Archie!
Archie says "Hi, Michele!" He's a little camera shy - in that every time I pull out a camera or my phone he immediately hides his sweet face. So glad you're here. 🥰
