You hit the nail on the head, my art is therapy and joy for me, what others see in it doesn’t matter. We all have that person who says “What do you do with your art?” like you need to justify making it. That is what makes it hard to accept ourselves, I appreciate all of your encouragement! Beautiful page too!💕🇨🇦

Thank you, Cindy. My "favorite" question is usually some form of "why did you do that"... or ... "what does it mean?" It used to get to me, but now I love it - it gives me a chance to share that it's ok to do things just because they make me happy. Art making really is the best therapy 🥰 (not medical advice 😂)

@@PaintedPaperStudio 🤣🤣 I have accepted the fact that many people only admire what they do, or they just don’t understand anything you can’t attach a monetary value to. You are right, I have explained many times how all creative outlets are for ones well-being and expression, yes, some result in monetary gain! Volunteering vs employment, is only one valuable? Therapy is expensive, art is better!😁

Jackie, you've made my heart sing with this video 💗💗💗! You've created such a beautiful collage! And your sketchbooks contain so many treasures ... LOVE the page at 1:44 so much! Your palette knife works are marvelous as well!
What you've said about staying creative no matter what others think about your creations is so important! And you're right: your art comes from within. But at the same time, this is what makes it scary for so many creatives when they show their work to the world. It's so easy to become vunerable. It takes a lot of courage to face this state of vunerability. Can be painful.
I've just returned from Paris and a wonderful Mark Rothko retrospective ... Rothko once said: Sending your work of art into the world is a daring and merciless venture. Your work of art lives and dies in the eye of the sensitive beholder.
I think we should be our own sensitive beholder and make our art stay alive no matter what ...
    Aloha from Berlin ❤🧡💛💚💙💜

    • @PaintedPaperStudio
      @PaintedPaperStudio  10 місяців тому +1

“We should all be our sensitive beholder” - so beautifully said, thank you for sharing Queen. And you are right, it does take a lot of courage, and can be painful to choose to share our creations. But we don’t have to, and that is also beautiful - keeping the thing that makes our heart sing, just to ourselves (if we choose).
I had the pleasure to experience a Rothko exhibit in New York in 2017 or 18. I could have stood in the room for days falling in and out of love with each piece at different times. Meanwhile, I heard the old trope spoken by a passerby - “I don’t get it, my son could have painted that.” * sigh *
Thank you for you very kind words about my sketchbook - as much as my art is for me, I still feel like a nervous school girl when I share it. * sigh* again.
I hope all is well in Berlin.
      Xo,
      Jackie

Thank you for sharing your process. I just got into collage and you have given me that confidence to just jump in and put together a piece freely. I am someone who loves the thinking process (it brings me joy to figure it out and spend time on it) but others enjoy looser art. Both can be right. Thank you for your insight. I love watching you work/play.

Thank you, Sam - you are exactly right, both can be right. A few weeks ago I created a video testing the translucency of different papers. I loved it because it served my inner-geek who loves the experiment process. But then I finished it by creating a "just get it out" abstract collage. I enjoyed both. I'm so happy you're here and that the videos connect with you. 🥰

Hi Jackie, your suggestion not to be "too panny planny" works great for me. So sometimes now I trust myself and start with what is lying before me on my desk and see, where it leads me. I love my time watching your video on a rainy sunday in Bavaria. Would you tell me how many hours a day you spend in your studio? Because in this video you shared a lot of work, that I haven´t seen in your videos - and you know I am a true (if that is the right expression) viewer. (For example those fabulous 🥳 grids at the beginning) In this video I liked very much how the layers (especially the transparent ones) add structure and mystery to the piece. Have a joyful sunday, Jackie 🥰

What an incredibly timely question, Sandra! Just today I was given an early holiday gift an apple watch. I had asked for one to replace my oura ring. I love the ring - truly, but I was having problems with it in the studio - cleaning problems. This is just my experience - I use my hands A LOT when painting papers/collaging etc., and frequently the Oura ring takes the brunt of the abuse. So I decided to go back to the wrist wearable. Hi Libby - I'm so happy you're enjoying the videos. The answer to your question is yes/no/sometimes. On this one I did not gesso first it was just a choice. If I know that I am going to work very wet I will usually gesso first, but typically I do not gesso in my sketchbook. I always gesso canvases, hardboard or anything I am going to sell. Sometimes I just use my gessos as paint in a painting or collage. I hope this helps 🥰

The spiral binding in mush more forgiving and expands when your sketch book pages are loaded with layers of papers/paint. Having said that, I've never used it for more delicate works, like ink or watercolor - it could make a difference. One of the things I like most about it is that it is spiral bound so both sides lay flat. I hope this helps and good luck in finding the perfect journal for your needs. 🥰

Hi Trina! My Canson's and Arteza's are all 180 gsm, while my Stillman & Birn sketchbooks are 270 gsm (and indestructible 😂). I have had really good luck with the 180 gsm pages - even for really wet techniques. But no joke, the 270 gsm is awesome!

As someone who "over thinks" my creations, I can say I honestly have not discovered value in making abstract art like that presented here. "Art" based on mushing paint and using a bunch of textured/patterned papers - papers often made on a gel press using mass produced stencils and rubber stamps, or incorporating mass produced images, simply doesn't meet my criteria for artistic development because it doesn't help me to improve my drawing ability, nor does it assist me in developing my visual story telling. I know from experience that my most satisfying works are those that forced me to confront my own perceived limitations by stretching my ability to represent identifiable images, as well as those works that improved my skills in using various media to create identifiable images.
The kind of art presented here is simply a way for art suppliers to sell more supplies. It keeps us locked into a system of consumerism and prevents us from actually overcoming our insecurities about our abilities and about creating real authentic art. It's only through shutting off the inner critic and making "bad" art, meaning art that doesn't have that "professional" look that commercialized art has, will we actually find our authentic voice. Until we find and use our authentic voice, we're not making art, we're just going through the motions.
