I’m ramping back up into my creative flow after a couple of weeks away from the studio, and I’m doing it by doing some grid journaling using simple abstract shapes. This is such a fun way to create new creative energy while making fun mini-collages.

I will do this when i get back to the studio. I am on a break from art and this will be good for recharging. Fortunately my break is not for problems. Rather i am forcing myself to clean and reorganizing my home. A friend of mine is providing her time, strength and energy to help this old woman to clean...i mean really clean... the house. I am on my own today and will be polishing wood furniture. It is good exercise and wow does it look beautiful when it is done. The walls of my house are covered...and i mean covered...with paintings of mine and from my collection. It is time for them to be rehung in different locations so i came see them from a new perspective. My friend and i cannot believe how different a painting will look in a different location and light. Plus it gives a whole new feeling to the rooms. My friend has now art experience but she has discovered a hidden interest and talent as i talk about the work as we go and we organize a grouping. She has an excellent eye and has solved a lot of problems with what to put where! She has loved this experience.
So i have several more weeks as i start to clean out closets and drawers. It will feel so wonderful and really really clean and polished. ✨✨✨✨What a great job to tackle when it is 100 degrees with 90% humidity outside.

What a fabulous video! I have to admit, I don't often do stuff like this but I'm going to change that as it seems like pure play. Plus, I don't have a lot of experience with collage but I've liked what little bit I've done. Reminds me a lot of tapestry weaving - a big love of mine. But this is way faster! So glad to see your joyous smile as you shared this with us today!

I put a piece of Press and Seal Wrap on top on the jar before screwing on the lid, especially for plastic containers. It helps improve the seal and makes it easier to get the lid off later.

Your video inspired me to start doodling while watching and I thought I’d stick to my favourite shape and see what different variations and patterns I can get and am thrilled with the results. Then you said about our visual language and finding out what we love and shapes we don’t like and how you use circles. It was funny as my doodle shape was the circle too and have discovered some amazing patterns.
Will give the grid a go and add my new circle based doodles.

It's interesting, when I look at it as auditioning, I move faster. If I think of it as "placement" I get critical and stuck. Auditioning for the win! 🥰

Hi Jackie, great video. A tip for you with gel medium jar (I had the same
prob with the lid). After use, wipe around the top of the jar with a damp cloth and put cling wrap/saran wrap over the top then screw the lid on. It makes unscrewing the lid much easier each time.

I love this relaxed exercise/experiment. It's exactly what I need to be reminded of - not everything has to be perfect in every art project. And now Jackie, you opened my mind to a new term "visual language." I get stressed with the question, "What's your art style?" In your opinion, is visual language the same as style? It is great to see you back😊
This is a great question, Elle. For me, visual language is deeply tied to a physical feeling - those things I do that I love. Most times I can't tell you why I love them, but they usually show up in any piece I create (like text, or those circles in triplicate.) Thanks part of my visual language. Style, to me, is something else. Since I rarely create for anyone else, I'm not too concerned with my artistic style. However, if I were, I think it would be closely to something that others would find identifiable. This is such a great question - I think you should ask every artist you come across - every one will probably give you different insight. 🥰

These little bite sized portions on the page just big enough to get you excited but not so big you overthink their composition. I enjoy the uniformed layout and the colour palette.

What a joy-filled exercise to jumpstart creativity after a studio break. Appreciate the template! I've traced around a stack of post-its in the past for my grid pages and it is tough to get them straight. Also, totally agree that the black outline at the end adds a little something that is difficult to explain. Navy also looks fab to finish those off.
You have my head spinning with ideas of using navy blue ink instead of black to surround the finished pieces! I Love navy as my darkest dark 😍 Thank you for putting that idea in my head 🥰
If you put a very thin coat of vaseline on the jar threads, it will open much easier.

Love this exercise! It's such a good way to get back into your creative spirit! I find thst the left side with thr black border keeps my eyes onba squre alittle longer.... How much fun was THAT?!? I loved everything about this video, Jackie. I love the colour contrasts and the shapes. I had never done grid collages until a few months ago after seeing an artist on UA-cam doing them. I love the variety and the joy of using up painted papers - I've SO many of them! I adore to gel print and tend to let them pile up. I am going to get a large sketchbook and devote it just to grids! It's grand to see you back in your studio. Hi Jackie! I just love your videos, your explanations and the joy on your face when you make something that excites you. When you pulled the papers for these grid collages, do you worry about the colors in the papers working together? I keep hearing that colors should have something in common, but when pulling papers even in the same color family they may not have a common color. How do you decide which colors to pull?
Hi Sassy-pants - this is a great question! Generally, I do not worry about the colors working together because color is only one piece of the puzzle. Texture, weight, size all take part in my process too. If you are a little nervous about mixing colors, pick any five paper colors - I mean any - and use all five in different ways, in each grid box. It's the perfect way to make a cohesive grid collage regardless of the papers you choose. Have fun with it 🥰

Mary - thank you for your kind words, and great question! Mostly I am not distracted by the other studies. I don't really tunnel in, I just look for clues for what to do with the piece in my hand. If I'm not picking up any clues, I put that piece down and try another one. For me, this exercise is all about trusting my intuition. I am always...always surprised and delighted at the end when I finally look at it as a whole. Does that help?

Hi Red Robin! This is a really fun exercise, and sometimes I do get inspired to create a larger piece in fact, one of the grids in this may turn into a larger (much larger) piece soon 😍. Some of the papers I use are archival, some are not, and some I have no idea. I don't worry too much about archival since majority of the pieces I create are for me or my sketchbook/art journal. Having said that, the commissions I've done were exclusively archival. I hope that helps. 🥰
