    I really liked your point about the human on the sigil instead of an animal, symbolizing the Bolton's attitude toward humanity. I never put that together before, but that makes complete sense. Thank you!

      If you turn the sigil into crucifix not changing it's colors but just turning the image of the flayed man from upside down to upright, and the "X" into a "T" or Cross.
      Would it be any better than the crucifix of Christianity

      Notable, also, is that Ramsay was killed by (his) animals. "They're loyal" he states, but then we see that Sansa is right. When the animals are starving, they show their animal nature and feed upon him. :-|

    One problem with that sigil is that when it is placed on shields in the field of battle, the enemy is reminded that surrender leads to torture. This encourages the enemy to fight to the death. There may be times when the Boltons want to spare their soldiers and make a demand for surrender. The enemy would never agree to that.

    I think that we’re forgetting something important. The only reason that Ramsay is alive is because Roose sees him as his son. He could have just killed his bastard, but he didn’t. There’s actually a scene that shows that no matter what, Roose will always know that Ramsay is his son.

    I still wish the show had incorporated the pink color scheme the Boltons' banners had in the books instead of the generic red and black "bad guy" aesthetic. Pink Boltons was one of those cool unconventional details GRRM came up with, and also extra creepy that they literally color their sigil after the flesh of the people they flay. Ramsay in the show ended up being a hugely generic villain right down to the way he was dispatched in a conventional final battle with the good guys and then "ironically" eaten by his own dogs, and the change in color scheme reflected that.

    I disagree with the video's notion that Roose isn't a gray character. He's the Tywin of the North, a sort of ruthless pragmatist. While he's hated for the Red Wedding, Roose had very good reasons for his betrayal. He knew the war was lost for the North. If you recall the Freys gave almost all their men to Rob when he crossed. He only had 400 to give. Robb would have likely lost the war anyway costing thousands more lives on both sides. To quote Tywin better to kill a few at dinner than thousands in the field. While his actions were despicable they can be justified if you look at it from his perspective. He wasn't totally evil, unlike his son.

    • @sophiejones7727
      @sophiejones7727 6 років тому +108

      yes, and no. The Red Wedding wasn't galling simply because it was brutal. It was galling because it was so unnecessarily brutal and the killers seemed to take so much pleasure in committing the act. Tywin Lannister would simply have murdered Robb and Catelyn Stark: and preferably kept his own hands clean of the deed. Other people might do despicable things, but the Boltons are the only ones who brag about brutality and indeed go out of their way to be brutal.

    • @lucasmorais7646
      @lucasmorais7646 6 років тому +40

      Sophie Jones I think Roose is a complete monster but without the massacre of the northern troops the deal would not work. Tywin needs to get rid of the enemy (and he doesn't take half measures, the Reynes and Tarbeks can attest) and Roose needs to bleed the other lords in order to maintain vast superior numbers under his command. Theon is aghast when he sees how overwhelming in comparison to other houses is the Bolton army when Roose returns home with the troops. Some houses from the North lose so much men thanks to Roose's calculating treachery they can barely pose a threat on their own. And in the books Roose, being tied by blood to Ryswells and Dustins, has powerful allies in the North as well. Not to mention the Karstarks and Freys. He will still lose though like Tywin did because thankfully GRRM is harsh but not nihilistic like some of his fans.

      Completely agree about "absolutely evil" but not unrealistically. These type of horrible things happened and still happen (not the first night thing but authorities torturing and abusing those below them in societal structure). And a powerful and utterly unscrupulous guy like Roose that has power purely by blood has basically a free reign to abuse his servants because he is relatively discreet and careful.

      @@st4ne4rmthevill63 - But the Boltons weren't reliable. They were even a threat to the North.
      I don't believe in genocide, and at any given point in time there may have been Boltons like Domeric. But I'd execute every single person associated with that house who participated in torturing, raping, etc. And I'd execute every single leader who took up arms against the Starks and their allies. I'd level the Dreadfort, and there would no longer be a House Bolton. All of the survivors would be commoners.
      All of the houses that were their allies would be led by those who weren't executed. I would express sympathy for any who supported the Boltons out of fear. But for any who may have agreed with the Boltons, they would be warned that they would be executed and their houses would be ended like the Boltons, if they continued any funny business.
      You shouldn't be so desperate for protection that you'll keep a serious, ongoing threat next door. I'd raise common people to noble people and help them build new castles, before I'd tolerate the bad Boltons and people like them. The Starks could've also given the lands of the Boltons and their allies to Starks and their allies who weren't 1st or 2nd in line to be an heir within their household. For example, 3rd children or aunts and uncles.
      *Actually, ideally I'd try to lay groundwork to end that system of government and create a constitutional republic. But I doubt that the king and the other houses would be very happy about that.

    She obviously only watches the show. Roose Bolton was loyal to Robb up until the point he married, broke his oath to the Freys, and killed Rickard Karstark. Why else would Roose lead the Stark infantry into a suicide battle with Tywin. Roose is not a good guy by any means, but he realized there was nothing to gain fighting for Robb Stark

      It's ScreenPrism not BookPrism, and there's very little substantive material for any of those houses in the show. Greyjoy maybe, but they haven't been explored in any depth since Season 2. There's just not much Tully material, and the Martell material is thematically incoherent garbage.

      Alex Furnas Well, she has A Song of Ice and Fire and A World of Ice and Fire to take informations from. I liked House Martell a lot in the books, and they have an interesting history with princess Nymeria and Rhoynars (I think I misspelled it, sorry). But yea, in the show, the house is garbage, not having Aegon, the prince of Dorne is being seen as an useless person, which is a shame, because he is really cool with his plans of revenge

    • @Libellulaire

      There might not be records of him being super cruel in the show (except for the Red Wedding), but there are plenty in the books.
      Like they say, he still practices the "first night", which is an old (now forbidden) "tradition" where the Lord gets to sleep with any new wife. If you marry in secret and he finds out, the woman is raped anyway, and the man is killed.
      Roose rapes Ramsay's biological mother, and that right under the hanged body of her husband. He also cuts the tongue of her brother so he wouldn't repeat it to the Starks.
      His bastard kidnapped girls, then set them free and hunt them with his hounds. Then he raped and killed the girls, and the son's servant raped their dead bodies. Roose never stopped those hunts.
      He is the one who plans the Red Wedding (it is not Tywin Lannister who plans it).
      He whips people for simple thievery.
      He always chooses violence and death as an answer, the difference with Ramsay is that Roose is *quiet* about it.
      That's why you don't get as much info about it. Ramsay is dumber and doesn't care, he just enjoys torturing and does it without caring about being discreet about it. Roose is cold and calculating, he makes sure what he does doesn't attract attention on him.
