      ScreenPrism I love your GofTs symbolism vids a whole lot but why include House Stark as 1 of the families seeking to take The Iron Throne from House Baratheon@8:28??? Robb Stark was the only participant in The War of The 5 Kings who wasn't interested nor did he even want The Iron Throne, only vengeance & justice for his father's death and to rescue his sisters and to liberate the entire North from Lannister control!!!

      Stannis to Davos, A Clash of Kings
      Renly offered me a peach. At our parley. Mocked me, defied me, threatened me, and offered me a peach. I thought he was drawing a blade and went for mine own. Was that his purpose, to make me show fear? Or was it one of his pointless jests? When he spoke of how sweet the peach was, did his words have some hidden meaning? Only Renly could vex me with a piece of fruit. He brought his doom on himself with his treason, but I did love him, Davos. I know that now. I swear, I will go to my grave thinking of my brother’s peach.

    You can count the times Stannis was impulsive by the fingers on Davo's right hand.

    • @ms_scribbles
      @ms_scribbles 6 років тому +16

      You know, I'm starting to see that most book readers seem to base their view of Stannis on what others say about him, and what he lied to others about himself, rather than actually paying attention to Stannis' *actions*. I forget which book it is, but the prologue of one of them is ALL about Stannis whining and whining and bitching and pissing and moaning about how nobody loves him and weeeh weeeeh everyone loved my brothers more than meeeee, why won't they love meee, weeeeeeeeehhhhhhh. MY RIGHTS MY RIGHTS WEEEEEHHH!
      Sure, he's a cold dick to most people, but there's no justice or lack of emotion in him. If there was, he wouldn't bitch about his rights all the time. He's so desperate for some reputation, *any* reputation, that he'll hurt anyone and everyone around him just so he can say he's hard, but fair. But tell me, how much justice was in burning his in-laws alive, who hadn't done anything illegal? None.

    • @ChukN0rris
      @ChukN0rris 6 років тому +49

      I didn't say that Stannis has no feelings, but that he is one of the least likely people to display them openly.
      I have not read the books so I don't know the context of this whining, bitching, pissing and moaning, and "weeeh weeeeh", but it sounds like you have very strong opinions about it. I would likely consider Stannis point of view understandable, seeing that his conviction in his obligation to his people and the other way around is woefully under appreciated.
      I think the bitching about his rights you mention is what I'd call pressing his claim. When the Iron throne is your's by right and you have a reputation, and he does have reputation, to be both absolutely unyielding and a brilliant military strategist stating your claim carries a lot of weight.
      On the topic of burning his in-laws I have to admit that burning people is morally wrong but it is still just in that it was the consequence of their own choice not to renounce the seven despite Stannis order to do so, and knowing the consequences.
      Now, if pretty much anyone else had done the same thing in the same situation it wouldn't have been just but Stannis holds Himself to the very-same admittedly rigorous standards he applies to his subjects and that is what sets him apart. Even if he did bitch and moan, he always did his duty and after he became King he never asked more of his subjects than he himself would have been willing to give in their place.

      @@ms_scribbles You horribly exaggerate. His "whining" as you say was probably one or two sentences simply stating facts that he was never popular. Actually your whole comment appears to be so toxicly whiny that I am not even surprised that you formed such a weird opinion about him in spite of reading the books.
      "how much justice was in burning his in-laws alive, who hadn't done anything illegal?" - If I am not mistaken this never happened in the books. The only ones who were burned alive by Stannis were deserters, rapists and other criminals.
      Stannis was a good man even in the TV show but some of his actions were twisted. To anyone who liked him in the TV show I definitely recommend to read the books. This is where his character truly "shines".

      @@ms_scribbles I invite you to reread that prologue (In the second book a Clash of Kings) with the information we know about Stannis, Davos and more important for this case Melisandre. Mel can see things in the future and by the attitude Stannis displays in the chapter you can see it's... totally off to be honest, but you can join the pieces.
      Think about it like this, Mel knew that Cressen was going to poison her (So she took the antidote and wasn't affected by the poison thus being more powerful in the eyes of everyone after this) so she told Stannis about it, I am sure he didn't belive it but lets say she say something among the lines of "let it happen, and I will convince you of my power" and well Cressen DID poison Melisandre, and if we recall Stannis didn't woke him up (posible because he didn't want anything to happen) and after Mel stuff being prove truth he had nothing left but believe her and ultimatly confirm everything when Cressen tried to poison her.
      Just mentioning the prologue thing, the other stuff will take a lot of time.

    I never got the whole "Robert was a terrible king" motif through the show. Yes he didn't do much from an administrative standpoint but he surrounded himself with people who were good administrators. With the possible exception of Littlefinger, who was working to undermine him, his council effectively ran the 7 kingdoms peaceably. He didn't exterminate houses that didn't support him in the rebellion and even pardoned the most loyal Targareyan supporters for the sake of unifying the kingdoms. As far a revolutionaries turned monarchs he was a pretty decent one. Tywin himself said it in his speech to Tommen about good kings that the ruler who listens to his advisers about matters he does not understand is a good one.

      Because he was a king that spent his days drinking, whoring and ignoring his kingdom.
      Like Aegon The Unworthy, he never actually did many acts of unspeakable cruelty, but his idiotic acts put the crown in a steep debt and spread discontent around the kingdoms.
      His abusive nature and stupidity is what caused Joffrey's demeanor and his broken relationship with Stannis. He attended 3 small council meetings in all of his reign and completely ignored his advisors when his mind was set.
      Littlefinger wasn't undermining him, he was trying to save what he could from Robert's lavish spendings.
      Robert wasn't a cruel king, but he was a bad king.

      Prashanth Ganasan no he didn't. Robert's carelessness left a gaping hole for those who were power hungry. He has birthright, even if he's a bastard, and he was legalized as a Baratheon by Daenyeris before she died. What's more, he's not a "player" and isn't corrupted by the fight for greed and power. He likely would've rejected the throne due to inexperience and fear of failure, but I think he'd make a pretty fair ruler.

      That's because it was mostly Martin's dialogue and Martin's scenes in the first 3 season's and then they proceeded to remove 1800 pages or 2 and 1/2 Bible's worth of material to write themselves into a corner by killing characters that are alive in the books and keeping character's that are dead in the book's alive so that the story doesn't really make sense anymore other than for the major characters.
      Even my friends who haven't read the books can tell something is wrong. You can tell the entire story of the Bible in 20 episodes which is what they have tried to do while lying to Martin before Season 4 aired (because he worked on that season and wrote The Purple Wedding episode) about what they would and wouldn't cover and eventually spoil. He thought he had until This season before they even started covering book 6 stuff.

    From a historical perspective (and I know I'm not the first to notice this), have any of you noticed the comparisons between the Baratheon Brothers and the Brothers of the House of York (Edward, George, Richard)?
    -Edward IV/Robert: Both superb military commanders, physically strong and large in their prime (Edward still remains Britain's tallest king at 6'4!), and both won their crowns on the battlefield (The Trident is essentially the Battles of Towton and Tewkesbury rolled into one). Both their realms experienced some sense of peace while they ruled. And both got soft and fat towards the end of their reigns, and both were notorious womanisers. However whilst Robert was a poor politician and lived for the fight, Edward was an excellent administrator and took huge leaps in expanding Britain's prestige abroad.
    -George, Duke of Clarence/Renly: Both possessed charm and wit, as well as enjoying the benefits of court life and high society. However, both were quite naïve when it came to dealing with matters they thought would advance them into higher power (Renly rashly proclaims himself King, despite knowing Stannis to be the rightful king; George abandoned his brothers to join the Lancastrians in a futile gesture), and both pay dearly for their treason: Renly is assassinated by the Shadow demon, and George is soon executed for treason by being drowned in a barrel of wine, as well as being murdered by their own brothers.
    -Richard III/Stannis: Like Richard, Stannis was an excellent battlefield commander, and both were responsible for winning battles that enabled their brothers to keep both the Iron Throne and English Throne respectively. Both also felt that they felt unrewarded despite their many years of service. Both were also astute and incisive politicians as well, with a strong, albeit self-righteous sense of justice, honour and duty, and who rallies support in the north by defending it from invasion. Both also denounce their nephews as illegitimate, and thus are dragged into war soon enough. Also enjoy enduring legacies amongst GOT fans and Ricardians, with each group seeing them as the 'rightful king', and of being misunderstood amongst the other characters/figures of their own world.

    • @CathieSoli
      @CathieSoli 5 років тому +9

      However, Roberts children really WERE illegitimate, whereas Edward's were not. The only reason Edward's were declared such was because it was deemed a child couldn't rule the kingdom effectively and would be governed by the regent. That was the real reason Richard grabbed the crown for himself.

    Some symbolism I'm surprised you didn't mention: When Robert ascended to the iron throne, he added a crown to his house's sigil, but he didn't add it on top of the deer's head as you might expect, but around its neck. That is after all, what the crown is to Robert, it is not a triumphant thing that he wants to have, it is a noose around his neck that will eventually kill him.

    Showing that the crown, or the pursuit to obtain it, will lead to their strangulation or death. Also that it's intentionally put around it's own neck during the change of their sigil, showing their decision to go after their eventual death in the name of power is a fate chosen by themselves.

Robert gave stannis that castle because his furious at him and other saw it honourable reward but in stannis he didn't liked he despises. Robert and stannis never had love, only hate, Robert would have liked renly as his heir more unlike stannis.

      No, he is not. The Blackfyres committed incest, marrying each other and other Targaryen bastards, keeping the Valyrian blood pure, while Robert, his brothers and whatever aunts and uncles he had as well as his father inherited the dominant Baratheon traits (because Baratheons are no1, they don't even have to commit incest to keep their blood pure because the seed is strong). He is 1/4 Targaryen, but that means little. After all, that is not a majority of his genetic makeup, so to say he is a Targaryen makes no sense...
