the worst thing is that one streaming service doesn't have all the movies, so you are forced to subscribe to another 5 services. Also, when you want to watch a specific movie, you have to buy it for 24 hours. So the subscription costs me more than 50 dollars a month. Lately I've been finding used and sometimes new blu-ray movies for less than a dollar.

I'm 41. Pretty much grew up without a VCR, but always watched movies on TV. When I got my VCR in high school after getting my first job I bought Blade on VCR tape. And then the Star Wars Trilogy, and all the Star Trek movies. All these years later, thousands of DVds, almost 1k in Blu-rays. I mainly focus on quality over quantity at this point, but still buy quite a bit. Ownership, putting the disc in, etc. are all meaningful to me.
This is one of the best defining vids I've ever seen. Absolutely have a physical collection. Big business is largely a scheme to make themselves rich while we remain limited. This way you are your own master and can see what you want when you want. We will never be truly free until we throw off the yoke of big business and big government. A thousand thanks for this video.
I am 100% percent for physical media. Bc I have been collecting physical media movies since 1989 & collecting physical media music since 1988. And I believe owning in owning your favorite movies on disk & your favorite music either on CD or vinyl

Absolutely it's worth it! I've been collecting since the Laserdisc days of the early 90's as a teen. I have a large collection of Laserdisc, DVD, some HD DVD's, Blu Ray . I don't have to think twice about streaming anything or look for a certain movie. Plus with hard to find movies on streaming platforms, or a limited time when you can watch something seems to be the customer is at the mercy of the streaming service. You have all the freedom in the world once you purchase a disc.
Well I would say that the second any studio changes something about a classic movie, for example, to update it a little bit for a modern audience then yes you need physical media. That way you can preserve the original forever.
Thanks for this video! I’m a 90s kid and I did get into the digital media quite a bit after the mp3 player came out and didn’t buy CDs as much. Now with Apple Music… it’s insane how you don’t own these things and they can take albums or songs off when a contract doesn’t renew. At least with my mp3 player..the music was still mine to listen whenever I wanted. I’m going to buy CDs again lol. For the DVDs, what worked for me is buying the DVDs of shows and movies that I always rewatch all the time. Then I buy on a need basis. If I’m super interested in a movie, I’ll buy it physically after I watched the trailer. This ends up saving you a lot of money and your purchases are meaningful. I feel with streaming services, we lost the importance of the intrigue of a movie and anticipation.
Here in the St.Louis area we have a store called vintage stock...huge physical media store at a couple of the local malls...its like the best store ever..ive been collecting dvd blu ray and cds for almost 20 years...screw streaming!
I've been collecting damn near since I came out of the womb. As I've gotten older and more tech savvy I've been making my own media server to back up my physical titles. This gives me the freedom of taking my collection with me the same way that streaming offers. Luckily I have the ability to have a huge collection since my family allows me to have a whole floor of the house to myself
Cancelled Netflix this week,started collecting this year,already have so much that i don't need streaming .Mostly used blu-ray .Netflix member since 2017.

I have no choice but to keep my collection alphabetized. It would drive me mad otherwise. One thing I do that I haven’t seen anyone else talk about is I keep a digital list of all my titles, separated by Blurry & 4K, DVD, and complete series. Each section is alphabetized, and each entry has the Title, format, and runtime. It makes it very easy for someone else to pick a movie to watch or borrow, and is very helpful when I have a set amount of time to watch something. Thanks for the content! Liked & Subscribed!

Great balanced video and I agree with the pros and cons having had a big physical media collection myself. After doing too many blind buys (because they were the price of a rental or less), I found myself with a bunch of stuff I really didn't want and had to do a purge. But it was a chance for me to look at my entire collection and decide what was important to me and how it important if so. I ended up moving a bunch of movies into either wallets or storage bags or sleeves of one sort or another and now I have things reasonably under control and am now more careful about what I buy and if I truly want it. The troubling trend now as you mention is the censorship of certain movies and TV shows, or them getting edited in one way or another.

Streaming is so convenient. However it's basically radio. A frequency that you tune into while it's on air. That's why people got into owning music on vinyl and cd... I don't get this modern ambivalence
Another trouble with streaming is also that many of the streaming services, especially when it comes to TV shows, exclusively have what is on now-- Netflix, when they were mailing discs, had plenty of classic shows (50s-80s) that you could try on DVD, and find older shows that suited you (and the same went for classic films as well). Nowadays, practically everything is the latest and greatest of now, and it's next to impossible (outside of UA-cam and physical media, of course) to find the classics.

Keep in mind. Streaming services are not a replacement for collecting physical discs. Its a replacement for cable and satellite tv. Paying for streaming should not prevent anyone from building a physical collection. Unless you are very tight on funds.
Awesome video. I dont see your storage ideas in the video description. One idea I saw was to buy individual plastic sleeves on amazon that hold a disc's paper cover as well as the disk in the sleeve. There are a lot of videos showing this where they box the sleeves, but only one youtuber i saw took it a step further, where she put her sleeves in binders, which offers a really nice presentation and storage of the discs. The box idea seemed kind of tacky to me but storing discs in binders is awesome, and is helpful especially when you only have space to display your most favorite movies on shelves. After a while, the a wall of movies starts to get cluttered and is too overwhelming to take in. The binder storage and browsing process allows you to pay more attention to each individual title, because you flip through each sleeve in the binder searching for something, and makes for a more selective experience when choosing a movie IMO. Its kind of like giant wall of discs versus a catalog (binder style), two different ways to store movies for guests to browse.
my only issue is with physical media i don't have the storage option for it currently, living in a apartment. I have quite a few that i have in storage in my parents basement for when i purchase a house, but that's still 2-3 years away. I've been ripping my bluerays to harddrives recently and making a home streaming service.
I would buy physical but if it’s cheaper digitally then I’ll buy it digitally. I was gonna buy furiosa yesterday on disc but movies anywhere had it for $11.99 I couldn’t pass it up. So saved i money for more movies. I recently bought black hawk down on 4k and it looked great bit grainy but no biggie. Then I watched the digital version with my code. Picture looked so much better.
On Max there are 2 episodes of FRIENDS that are not available and in another episode there's a scene cut out and some of the episodes they dont show the whole ending. I got the blue ray collection and soon will get it on 4k. So I can watch all the episodes in full if I want to. Im sure this isnt the only series thats being done to. I currently have around 300 movies
Dude I found" the office " the complete series on DVD for 10 bucks add a pawn shop. Not only do I not need to pay for the service that it's on currently peacock. But that show has a lot of offensive material that could go in and out of style. plus, I haven't seen the whole series. so, I think I'm going to keep it. Unless I'm at the point where I never want to watch the show again 😄
I just picked up the whole office series on dvd during the prime day sales. I got a good deal but the amount of discs in the box is a little annoying compared to the blu ray set.
once its yours you owe no one for next to no cost try recycling centres for really cheap films i got my white book shelves for free from a recycling centre and i already had a tall cupboard and a couple of over flow trays got 3 them last week for free as know the wife of the recycling centre who's my pa so i can if she drives me there as i don't drive get the choice of movies and tv shows and go into the ck room were normal customers aren't allowed and have my pick of movies from the store shelves all he has to do is put a few pounds in the charity pot

You see I actually like the fun of collecting movies and specially for movies that are my all-time favorites like road warrior. there's something different about having it on the shelf where I can look at the artwork. I actually own a copy of a classic movie. Do you know how cool that is to me. I really need to go through my collection and get rid of some of the fluff but there's some movies I must own a physical copy of. I don't want to ever say man I want to watch road warrior but I can't find it to stream or it's been edited. Sure I can download it. But I also like having the rental experience at home. With my movies organized by my favorite genres. I also feel like if I don't own a movie I'm going to forget about it. If I did get rid of some of my movies Id at least like to make a spreadsheet of all the movies I like. You can actually do that on blu-ray.com or the app. Another thing I've started doing recently is I like owning obscure movies that no one knows about. I think for sure those would be hard to find down the road. Possibly even for download. Owning these movies makes me feel cool to myself, even though nobody cares 😄
I was looking for a 60s series , well i found it in 2 versions a case or the boxset, but only on DVD , very annoying, cheapest price for the boxset is just under £100, 4 seasons, no its not 24, man from UNCLE.
I do spend too much money on physical media. You can subscribe to 3 services or you can buy three movies a month. Also you don't have to subscribe to streaming sites to preview movies you can use tubi, crackle etc. so I'll watch the free streaming services and then save my money to buy the movies. If you buy three movies a month by then the year that's 36 movies. Over the course of three years you own about 100 movies. Which I think is a good amount for a normie. Most of us have been collecting for 10 to 15 years. Over half of my collection is DVDs that I picked up used for 1 to $2. If you take advantage of the used market I don't think it's expensive to collect. My main issue is watching all the movies I buy and space. I'm trying to go through my collection and watch some movies and sell some of the fluff. And I might invest in one to two more shelves. But I'm definitely happy with my collection for the movies I love Because you never know which streaming service will be carrying them carrying them. But with general movies that I don't care to have access at all times streaming for digitally renting is fine. And I think free streaming services are fine if you just want to watch something new. I have found the trap of wanting to watch everything that's out there and it's just impossible. And there's a lot of garbage.

One thing you didn't mention was the issue of disc rot. Collectors really need to be aware of this and how to prevent deterioration of physical media.

Yes disc rot can Unfortunately be an issue but you can avoid it by taking care of your collection and storing them properly.

I do spend too much money on physical media. You can subscribe to 3 services or you can buy three movies a month.
Also you don't have to subscribe to streaming sites to preview movies you can use tubi, crackle etc. so I'll watch the free streaming services and then save my money to buy the movies.
If you buy three movies a month by then the year that's 36 movies. Over the course of three years you own about 100 movies. Which I think is a good amount for a normie.
Most of us have been collecting for 10 to 15 years. Over half of my collection is DVDs that I picked up used for 1 to $2.
If you take advantage of the used market I don't think it's expensive to collect. My main issue is watching all the movies I buy and space.
I'm trying to go through my collection and watch some movies and sell some of the fluff. And I might invest in one to two more shelves. But I'm definitely happy with my collection for the movies I love Because you never know which streaming service will be carrying them carrying them.
But with general movies that I don't care to have access at all times streaming for digitally renting is fine.
And I think free streaming services are fine if you just want to watch something new. I have found the trap of wanting to watch everything that's out there and it's just impossible. And there's a lot of garbage.
