I think people are realizing that streaming is starting to show its flaws. Ads, increased prices, and disappearing content are all good reasons to stick with physical.
Totally agree, it’s became a bit out of control. Too many platforms for sure and they are going back the way like u say, in that ads are creeping back in and prices are creeping up. The value is dissipating for sure in a lot of platforms. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment my friend! 👍😃
@@cubsfan-l9x you can use it forever though and it isn't dependant on an internet connection or a server being online, unlike digital which be closed whenever they want
I never got rid of my dvd/blu rays even with the rise of streaming. Still always saw value in something you owned because no lousy streaming service can take it away.
Nice one mate, I wish I had kept mine but I'm enjoying re-buying those titles in 4K at least. I guess at that point in my life it just wasn't as important to me. I'm 100% back in the fold now tho. Thanks for your comment mate! 😃
@@sirducksworthythe3rd842 I would say there is more point to using those survices as you won't be able to watch that content otheerwise. Also both apple and netflix release things on physical.
Our local pawn shops are a tremendous resource for used Dvds and Blu-ray. I have purchased many for 50 cents to 1 dollar each and most are in like new condition and some are not even opened at all. I love physical media for many reasons you have mentioned. No one can censor or remove anything. It's mine to keep.
Yeah if ur not so bothered about 4ks and steebooks etc, standard blu rays go for peanuts 2nd hand and still look fantastic. Especially when upscaled on 4k tvs & projectors. Thanks for taking the time to comment my friend and i’m glad ur still enjoying and supporting physical media 😃👌
I remember the days I used to go to HMV and sunrise records. Buying CDs, DVD, Blu Ray. I miss the excitement, of rushing home. And opening it, tearing of the plastic, watching my movies, or listening to my music. I made the mistake of getting rid of most of my CDs, dvd, blu ray collection, about 300, for steaming. Now I have been trying to restart my collection. Going to record stores, thrift stores. Since we no longer have, HMV, Sunrise records. And Best Buy, stop selling DVD, blu ray, cd.
Maybe it's just the algorithm on my feed but I'm seeing more and more youtubers showing off their dvd & blu-ray pickups. I think physical media could make a resurgence and draw in collectors like novelty funko pops
Hey, thanks for sharing this story! You just came up in my recommended and you definitely earned a new subscriber! I agree it’s definitely not dying. In fact I just invested in a brand new 4K player that goes with my whole new set up that I just bought for myself and like you said, I think the collectors editions are even more beautiful than ever now! I’m in the states and I wish we had HMV here! Wal Mart is so hit and miss depending on where your location is and same with Amazon and how well your stuff is going to survive shipping so you almost have to order from the companies directly most of the time.
The thing that puts me off streaming the most is when classic films are constantly being passed around different services. For example, I swear Die Hard and Jurassic Park have been on several different platforms in the past few years, and at one point Die Hard was only available to buy or rent, it wasn't even included on a monthly streaming plan.
I’m old enough to remember buying VHS in the very first days of “sell-through” movies, I think Batman 1989 was one of the first major releases. I’ve collected movies for decades and seen it go through so many changes. It’s in a great place right now. I love grabbing a bargain blu ray for a quid from CEX but also love the lush library editions that often come out on boutique labels. I’ve totally abandoned all streaming, I literally use nothing now except UA-cam and my own collection of physical media.
I enjoy both fronts too mate. I love the thrill of thrift in cex, charity shops etc finding something for cheap in the ‘wild’ but it’s nice also indulging in the odd premium set and the newest releases. Cheers for watching mate, appreciate it 👍😃
Your welcome. I try and keep things honest on here. I’m not a definitive authority on anything but like to make genuine content and avoid clickbait . There’s enough of that out there 😩🤦🏻♂️ Thanks for watching 😃
This is a very good point and you're probably right. I'll say though that as long as it's making money and it drives supply and demand within the industry, then it can only be good for physical media and it's consumers. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment my friend 👌😃
And because they strategically released titles that had never had a u.k release. It is just hot air from a desperate director of hmv. Even most charity shops dont take dvd and blu ray. The environmental issue also makes them non viable.
I recently got an old collectors edition of Silence of the Lambs and it has recipe cards. Just cracked me up thinking about whoever was putting it together and was like "you know what this needs? a recipe card for fava bean salad"
😂😂 You absolutely have to make the meal to recipe now tho… and of course have it whilst watching the movie 😋😋😋😂 This is also the kinda thing that’s great about PM and especially hunting for 2nd hand stuff. Thanks for sharing ur find pal 😃
Absolutely, the only real reason i still use stream services is for new content that i’m interested in. Not for older stuff. Thanks for your comment my friend 👍😃
Both streaming and physical media have their good points. For the casual movie viewer, streaming is a dream. I've known people who can't understand why people would ever want to watch a movie more than once, but certainly it's cheaper and way more convenient to stream if you have no interest in collecting. I don't think physical will ever die, it's simply in a transitional phase. The boutique labels will always be there to pick up the slack and there are ways the medium could move into, such as Manufactured on Demand, limited runs, which are already happening... I don't know why anyone would want to keep trying to convince people that Physical Media is dying - except perhaps the streaming companies who are losing millions of $$...
I've never streamed a movie or show. I buy about 5 dvds a week, mostly second hand, to add to my personal collection of films and shows. I'm finally getting those 80's action/thrillers/scifi I remember watching as a kid. Darn things are getting more expensive.
Not sure if ur aware but DVD sales in the US and UK anyway still account for around 40-50% of overall physical media sales. The biggest share of any format. I myself would rarely buy a dvd anymore when there’s HD & 4K options available but you can’t knock the value of the good old dvd. It has the largest breadth of choice still too. Especially for TV shows and other non-movie type media. Thanks for watching anyway 👍
Excellent Andy . I never thought it was dying . I've seen so many videos saying it's declining gradually , and it was a bit of a downer. I have so many pre-orders this year compared to last year. I love HMV , i wish Virgin would make a comeback , and give them some competition like the old days . Thanks for recommending A Bittersweet life, really enjoyed it.
Neither did i mate but we all have to concede it’s not as relevant to the masses anymore and numbers have dipped significantly. It has been pretty doom n’ gloom news wise but this is very encouraging. I think it’s hit its bottom tho and will now grow as a niche, collector’s market. I genuinely think it’s welcome news and we’re in a good place. Like u say, u cannae actually keep up with the sheer amount of stuff coming out so there cleary is still an appetite. Cheers mate 👍
Cracking video and news - you cannot beat getting something tangible in your hand, that can't be taken from you if the site falls down/crashes etc - and itll hopefully hold it's value. Cant beat physical media, even if my war film collection is just DVD 😂. Keep them coming mate! Another topper 😁
I absolutely agree. U don’t really own something in my humble opinion, unless u can physically take it out and show it to someone (insert innuendo here 🍆lol) And i will watch your generation war mate. Must be coming up to my 5 yesr anniversary of having it so never a better time 🤦🏻♂️😂 Cheers for dropping by mate 👍
Physical media is growing faster now , due to streaming services raking in $$$$$$ by upping subscriptions and us collectors want to watch movies without relying on crappy internet connection.
My local Meijer stopped selling DVDs and Blu-ray movies this week. Best Buy also quit. It seems like unless you can find a specialty shop or online store, you can't buy DVDs or Blu-rays at retail any longer.
Same here in the UK my local Sainsburys stopped selling physical media altogether a year ago and my other stores stopped selling it too and HMV closed a few years ago
Physical media hasn't died here in the USA! Blu-ray, music cd's still sell here. Those who stopped selling them aren't too bright. They're losing money. Many don't stream. If you do you'll eventually end up paying for the CLOUD SERVICES, and if you don't pay you'll lose the cloud and all that you purchased.
It’s been s while since i bought off ebay but there are definitely deals to be had. I think people forget u can buy new off ebay too. Thanks for watching mate 👍
I am really glad physical media is seeing a resurgence. People are realising streaming is becoming a con. Ads, monthly payment and price rises as well as the fact companies can remove media whenever they please. If you own a copy its yours forever.
I do think people are getting a bit jaded with streaming and its inherent flaws that u’ve listed. Hope more at least consider physical for those reasons. Thanks for your comment mate 😃👍
I’ve never thought that physical media was dying, 4,000 members in my fb group would agree to that, i keep seeing reports posted about this subject, but why if it’s dying do the studio’s still give us collectors the latest movie releases in 4K and also all our old favourite’s with a new 4K scan and given a new atmos audio upgrade……JAWS comes to mind, it’s never looked or sounded better
Thanks Kevin, yeah me neither. That’s why i was keen to cover this news release and talk about just that. It has of course shrunk as a market. A lot of people will never go back to discs and that’s fine but i’m so glad it’s still finding an audience and growing into something else, more niche and tailored to the ones who still love it most. I can only see it growing in popularity now as opposed to continuing to dwindle. Thanks for ur comment pal 👌
HMV is the last big one we have here mate. And it’s sister store ‘FOPP’. There’s not many places that sell PM here either. I try and support HMV as much as i can as i want it to stick around. Why not check out my store tour video of my local one mate if u haven’t already? It’s linked in this video’s description ☺️ Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment 👌
great video mate, its crazy that streaming services were made to cut the cost of say sky tv etc but now with all the services its coming up to the same price as having sky tv. i think people are deffo starting to cut back. i wanted to watch beetlejuice yesterday...not on streaming anywhere, good job i own it on physical media :)
Yeah it’s coming to a head. They are gonna start eating each other soon. Some will def be bought over. It’s too saturated. You just can’t do them all. I think they might start offering more deals on a contract basis a la sky to keep people locked in. Great example with Beetlejuice mate. Very popular movie, month out from its hotly anticipated sequel and u can’t stream anywhere!? Madness. I also have the 4k ☺️ cheers for ur comment paul mate 😃
Totally agree with what you said, Andy . I think for the mainstream casual viewer, they are happy with streaming. Although I just heard Disney plus are raising prices again so people may revert back to buying DVDs as so much cheaper. Certainly, for the film enthusiast or collector, there has never been a better time for collecting. But, the market will continue to shrink as more casual viewers adopt streaming services. I'm wondering if there is a battle between studios to gain market share, making viewers only sub to one service by constantly increasing prices 🤔 Great subject 👍
Yeah u raise some good points of ur own there Matt 👍 I think ur right the future is still a bit of question mark. If new, younger generations don’t take an interest and more and more adopt streaming we’re still in danger of becoming a bit insignificant. I think it’s really important to still have stores and big websites promoting physical, as well as the studios and the filmmakers themselves like Nolan etc. cheers for watching and for ur comments Matt 👌
Literally had a moment about this while thing yesterday... Theres a movie I've not seen, from like 8 or 10 years ago... Wanted to watch it, wasn't on any streaming... Was £8 to 'buy' digitally... The blu ray was only £6 from amazon, was a no brainer
Yeah this is a good example Jimmy, especially second hand. Pick up the blu ray for like 2 quid with older stuff. What was the film mate? Are u afraid to out yourself with whatever it is? 😂 Thanks for watching and for ur comment Jimmy 👌😃
@@ElectricGeek it's was Only The Brave, forest firefighter movie with josh brolin and miles teller... I'd seen random clips on Facebook for it... And it looked decent... Tired to find it on streaming... It wasn't. Really good movie based on a true story... Don't even know if it got a cinema release here in the UK...
@scottishgeekguy awesome mate, Only the Brave is a great film. I watched it a couple of years back after Topgun: Maverick came out. Ironically i streamed it from somewhere 😂 Circled back for as it was directed by Joseph Kosinski also. It’s shot beautifully also as u’d expect from him. Not coincidence Miles Teller n’ Jennifer Connelly were then cast in Maverick i reckon.
I was in my local HMV last Saturday and it was booming. Not just physical media but also all sorts of products were selling in HMV too. There seem to be a real social atmosphere in there as well which you just can’t get with streaming plus I think also people are getting sick and tired of subscribing to infinite streaming subscriptions just to find out that their favourite film & TV show they always wanna watch anytime is no longer on there despite being the “Convenient Choice” and as we all know buying digitally is useless anyway as it’s just buying the license that can disappear any time & no one ever owns anything. Plus Physical Media Distribution companies are really trying to make new releases especially in 4K juicier to buy then ever unlike a decade ago. Eventually yes but I don’t think physical media will completely die in our lifetime as it has made a huge resurgence for one or two or maybe even three last dances if we’re lucky!🤘😎🤘
Great comment mate and I whole heartedly agree. U echo a lot of my points in the video. I love my local and chat away with the staff when in. They’ve just expanded their 4K and discs section and when i asked it was from the top and a direct response to sales being up. They are pushing it which is great. I think for physical media to continue to prosper it needs young bleed. It needs to be ‘cool’ and create intrigue for new people. HMV does a great job of that. I hope they are around for a long time. Be sure n’ checkout my tour video of the Ayr store if u want to see my local. Thanks pal 🫡👌
Great video Andy, Me personally i prefer physical media more but find myself getitng a dvd not watching it again it then collects dust, and if ever want to watch somthing i get it off cinema paradiso or find it on streaming services , hmv im personally surprised is still going, but hope it continues going strong,
Cheers Kasim mate, yeah you’ve still got to be sensible with what u buy to avoid just amassing piles of crap u’ll not watch or watch again. Having a wee clear out time and again can create space and maybe even some currency to bring stuff u really want in 👌Cinema Paradiso is good way to watch discs without over flowing ur collecting. Cheers mate 😃
We need indy film shops to spring up like indy record shops did when vinyl came back, there's a lack of places to buy from in the real world. Also if 4k is region free and people are buying things world wide get rid of the region's on everything else as well. Plus stop the double dipping crap.
I support physical media until i die. I recently just got the Disney movie Wish on DVD at Target and while i was there i notice they BARLEY had any movies on DVD and even the Blu Rays were pretty low so it looks like target my be fading out in that department. Luckily I got the movie on DVD. It feels good to watch a physical copy digital is ok but it doesn't give me that same feeling
I'm going to start cutting back on the streaming services. Especially Netflix. Amazon is just handy to have, and there catalogue is pretty solid I think. I'll always be a collector of films.. it's just in my blood, but it's nice to see the wider audience going back to physical media somewhat. Awesome video Andy 👌. Also... I NEED that mug haha!! Class
Yeah Amazon Prime is def worth it. Getting prime delivery n’ deals also 👌I pay the extra £2.99 or whatever for ad free. I’ve ditched netflix for a bit and recently punted my sky package completely. I agree mate, physical media has been part of my life since as far back as i can remember. I hope more youngsters get into now it’s having a resurgence! I knew u’d like the mug mate. It’s a lastexittonowhere mug mate, might still have them. It wasn’t even meant to be in shot, i was just genuinely drinking from it whilst recording 😂 cheers man
I still buy physical media blu ray movies and new tv shows music blu ray and dvd tv shows not on blu ray and the occasional music concert not available on blu ray and cds i get some from my local HMV store and the other's some imported from Japan music wise and ebay and occasions amazon UK
Nice one mate! Safe to say ur definitely doing ur bit and building a nice collection while ur at it 👌📀 . Good to see u supporting HMV also. Thanks for ur comment mate 👍
I still collect Blu-Rays and DVDs. I do believe there is a place for streaming sites, although I find them hard to navigate and that films and TV series get bundled together, particularly on Netflix. This also may be the only place where you can watch certain films that may not have come out on DVD or Blu-Ray.
Nice one mate. Yeah it annoys me also when so apps don’t have a filter for movies & shows. Some apps def better than others for it. And like u say, the only way to get most of the new, trending tv shows as they come out is on netflix, amazon, max etc . Thanks for your comment and for watching the video 👍😃
HMV is my regular go to place to buy blurays and 4Ks (though it doesn't have every single possible release). Really like their new floor in Oxford Street. Can't say I have bought any DVDs there though, still get the occasional DVD if they look like they will never get a bluray release. If the streaming services were offering wonderful films from the 50s, 60s etc, I would probably watch them more (Amazon Prime isn't too bad there)
Only trouble with that is some genuinely good stuff does occasionally come to streaming only that u’ll miss out on until it comes to disc (if at all! 😩) Thanks for watching mate 👍😃
I don’t care how good a show is, if it’s ‘only available on Netflix’ or whatever then I won’t watch it at all. I’m also boycotting ‘Amazon originals’ 😄
I used to subscribe to the 3 main streaming platforms. I don’t now. It was Guardians of the Galaxy 3 on Disney + that did it for me. The picture quality was fine. But the sound quality was worse than The Chase on ITV. I’ve always bought physical media. Even music cds. I really believe it should be law to tell the customer what the bit-rate of the streaming service is.
Yep, i’ve experienced this also mate. I often use disney+ to stick the disney films on for my girls in the home theatre and i have to turn the volume up significantly to hear their supposed ‘atmos’ properly and even then it’s still underwhelming. Compared to the equivalent movie on a disc it’s night n’ day. And yeah bit rates should be talked about and advertised more. Thanks for your comment mate, sorry i missed it till now.
4k is now a collectors market that’s clear by the frequency of boutique releases, more obscure titles are getting 4ks than ever before. Mainstream titles will still sell more in bluray and dvd, for me personally I prefer to own physical copies of my films I have streaming subscriptions but tends to be for tv series.
Cheers badger, yeah i think we’re in a god place. We all do our bit for it also. I think that’s important to hopefully get new blood excited about it too 😊 thanks man 👍
I only sub to Amazon Prime, But i do have a very Healthy Apple Tv account full of films, maybe 800 odd in there, loads were digital codes, handy they upgrade for free to 4k Dv etc etc , But i have a nice setup now in my home, a 77" oled with an Atmos speaker set up and love my disc collection also mate
Oaft that’s a fair few mate 👍I wasn’t collecting as heavy when there were a lot of apple redeemable codes. I have a few but like u say good they upgrade them to 4K etc free of charge 👌 Owning digital isn’t as bad but still never really yours as u’ll know. I’m not a ‘streaming basher’, it’s part of life and def is convenient but there’s still very much a place for physical. Certainly as far as i’m concerned. Nice setup mate, i’ll be doing a detailed video of my setup soon. Cheers for ur comment Aidey 😃
Great Video EG, well explained. 🎉 Indeed PM is 'Evolving' for the better, becoming 'Niche' as you rightly say. 'Collectors Editions' appear as 4K first, then Blu Ray, but Never DVD..!!? DVD just isn't worth the investment at Any level, particularly by the Studios/labels, ..imho.
Thank you ☺️ Yeah dvd still being a thing is hard to get your head round. There’s a real drop in quality from blu ray but believe it or not it still makes up about 40-50% percent of PM sales in most regions so goes to show not every body cares about picture / sound quality. It’s hard to knock the value of DVD I guess and is still important for the overall PM market. Thanks so much again for watching and for taking the time to comment 👌😃
Remember when vinyl was dead and buried? Same with dvd/blu ray. Get your physical media if you want your movies uncut by the woke brigade. So many old classic movies are unavailable for streaming anyway.
Yep this is a good point i forgot to mention in the video. Disney+ especially are guilty of amending both new and old content to appease the cancel culturists. Physical media is the only way to protect urself from this. Thanks for the comment mate 👍
I laugh at myself now because when I bought a premium tv & Blu ray player I said I’d only purchase my favourite films… WRONG!! My upscaler is top notch although dvd cleans up nicely, I can get any Blu ray to 4k with Dolby Vision Oh and Classic b&w movies look astounding like they must’ve done when the celluloid was fresh in the old days, deep & dark yet still “silver” I’ve saved more money this month buying rather than renting out or purchasing through streaming I’m already hooked I’m just giving in to it….
I can totally relate to this 🤦🏻♂️ I had actually sacked all my blu ray & dvds around 2015, everything bar a handful of personal favourites. Then around 2018 i got a 4K tv and 4k player and told myself the same rubbish u told urself… only the favourites 🤥😂 Fast forward to now, got hundreds, multiple players, tvs, sound system and a bloody youtube channel covering it all too 😂 You’re in the right place my man. Thanks for watching and for ur comment ☺️👌
I still buy physical 4ks and Blu rays. Not so much DVDs though. I won’t buy from CEX again as every-time I have the discs have frozen half way through. I’ll stick to HMV and Amazon to buy them.
Unfortunately, so many people dump their old DVD collections off at CEX, and the shops don't have the time and manpower to test every disc. But to be honest, if a disc has noticeable scratches on it they shouldn't be selling it at all and it should be just sent off to be recycled, so they should at least be doing that as a quality check.
I think they do fairly decent deals? What do u think is a rip off? They are more competitive than Zavvi anyway who charge for delivery 😫 Prime is hard to beat, especially for one off flash deals. HMV often do 50% off sales which are good.
I bought mute witness & Abigail from HMV in Glasgow city centre yesterday , I’m 38 & I’ve been collecting since VHS in the 90s , the younger generation aren’t interested in physical media though , also I hate that on streaming they can edit things that may be offensive nowadays like the French connection I think had some raciest language removed ,
Snap mate, same age and remember getting predator on VHS, xmas ‘91 or something as a stocking filler 😂 different times 🤦🏻♂️ But ur right, relying on streaming services means they can decide what’s appropriate and what’s not in this more woke society we now live in. I hope more youngsters find their way to physical media but it’s a tall order. Not sure how best to attract them but we need to as they are key to it continuing. Cheers man 👍
As the saying goes reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. I think many are going back to buying physical as they don't trust the digital ownership and how things have gotten pulled over the last 5 years. Japan is getting a 4K RRR release now which I don't believe India is getting sadly.
HMV would sell even more if they had a larger in store selection. Too much space taken up with cuddly toys and Funko Pops, that can be bought at loads of other places.
My store to be fair has recently expanded all it’s blu-ray sections. The 4k & boutique stuff especially. When i asked in store it was in direct response to sales being up. If they ditched all the pop culture swag they’d likely go down again. After all that’s the old business model which repeatedly failed. This business model seems to be working and it gets young people in who then hopefully might also get interested in physical media so i think it makes sense and is necessary for them. Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment my friend 👍😃
Hi andy its great news ive never been the biggest streaming fan i think a lot of it is cut and the 4k is pretty bad as you say its cut down only thing it bothers me and might be worth a talking point is rereleaseing movies why do they have to be 17 quid up lol for example junior on bluray was and still is in hmv at 16.99 no premium format regular bluray im a big 4k physical media guy like yourself but why do they have to charge and arm and a leg extra for old title and its been on bluray before thats my only complaint im a big hmv cex even colins video store when in down on holiday if it was upto me i wouldnt have streaming im glad the sales are up and also it seems in the us the vhs is getting releases of movies now it wont be at a viynal level but its good to hear hope your well thought id make possibly a good few taking points there thanks dazz remember the winner is you
Cheers Dazz, yeah regular blu ray should never be more than £15 MAX. But for old catalogue titles, i think £5-£10 is fair. I don’t hate streaming at all but like u if it disappeared one day (hypothetically), i wouldn’t really miss it. I always prefer to watch on disc. Thanks for ur comment mate 😃
@ElectricGeek no worries man thanks it happened again i was just in hmv in ayr and because of malcolm x had a 4k release the price is bumped up to 15 from 6.99 2 weeks ago i just popped into colins video shop there rented a couple of films furiosa and the dreaded madam web haha i like going in renting a few films while on down this way and the kids like grabing a few comic books he was asking after ye mate says youv not been in for a while he asked me if youv finished reading nailbiter what ever that is haha
@entertainmentshack1933 Haha, i’ve still no finished nailbiter mate 🤦🏻♂️(🤫 ) I’ve no been in for a while mate. Just been busy with work and the girls. They are a handful and often on my own with them. When i take them in they cause chaos 😂 I’ve been meaning to get across for a bit. Got leave coming up soon so will jump in then. Enjoy ur time down in the shire mate ☀️😎
I have a similar approach. If i don’t think i’m likely to ever revisit a film then i usually get rid of it, otherwise ur just hoarding really. Thanks for your comment mate 👍😃 Love your user name btw, loved the monkey island games as a kid 👌☺️
I’m definitely going to do this video David mate. It’s ridiculous i’ve gone this long without doing it! I’ve got it scheduled for next month, once the kids are back in nursery / school and house isn’t a bomb-site everyday 😩 Thanks for the suggestion mate 👍
More properganda from the unemployed who can't afford physical media. Aliens on Amazon is selling over 900 copy's of uhd 4k blu-ray a month, media dead doubt it very much. Hilarious 😂
Def not dead mate but the market is shrinking year upon year. This is promising news tho. There’s absolutely still a healthy market for it like you say. As long as it still makes money, it’ll always be around 😃 thanks for watching mate 👍
@ElectricGeek the thing is they don't advertise 4k bluray on tv or media. And the bubble burst on streaming sites. Take Netflix you need to pay a premium for 4k Hdr, sky in UK asked the same, they don't keep films they delete from there online store.
@@Frostbite351 agree that paying extra for 4k/hdr is shit. And more could be done for awareness of physical for sure. I think certain things like dolby vision, imax ratios, extended editions etc should be kept for the physical release only, then there’s a reason for the unaware to check it out and consider buying. People who go the extra mile to physically buy a film should be rewarded more IMO
Yeah i kinda does but i think the summary of it is. Sales declined from 2022-2023 and are still down from 2022 figures in 2024 but up from 2023 so it maybe means we’ve bottomed out at least and are no longer in free-fall. Or at least HMV aren’t anyway 👍📀
The thought of having to get off my sofa every time I want to play a different game on my Xbox....get real, I'll be walking over to the TV and changing channel next...lol
Fair enough mate lol Not a major issue for me but yeah gaming on disc is pointless. That’s why i didn’t mention that in the video. No performance benefit, games don’t fit on discs anymore either with all the updates so u own the full game on disc for about week at most before the first online update lol I don’t collect physical games. Leaves more space for my blu rays ☺️ Thanks for watching 😃

Blu ray sales are not up HMV released strategical titles that had never had a u.k release and these titles people had been waiting on for a eternity. Dont believe the hype look at the end of year sales report for ALL dvd blu ray and 4k then the truth will be outed. You only have to look at 4k sales and how little you can resell them for just a few month after the initial release. I wouldnt bother with 4k there will never be anywhere near as many titles as there is on standard blu ray and they are silly prices. 4k titles have terrible artwork rarely near the original poster artwork and very few are u.k releases they are mostly import. Then factor in a 3 way split between dvd , 2k and 4k that makes it hard for it to pay the manufacturers a wage. Example i worked for a printing company laminating posters , short runs we earned fook all but had to keep the companies that used us happy so that we could make money from them on bigger orders. When a film is in the blu ray chart for 5 consecutive years then it means people arent buying them to knock years ago titles of the chart. Remember this is new sales these charts not used sales. As a example Jaws was outselling new titles years after it was initially released on blu ray. Not even sure they mension amount of sales anymore. The best use for physical media is to string them up in the back garden to scare magpies away or give them to the midgets frisbee team.
Also edited films too stuff deemed inappropriete in modern times is edited out of the older films that are on Streaming
The only ones who say physical media is dying are the big execs who want customers to get comfortable not owning anything
Exactly
I mean you don't own a disc either. It's still a "license to use the content" under a very limited set of circumstances.

Nah most people just use streaming
I'm not a big exec and i havent bought anything physical since 2009.
Physical media = Freedom.
Here Here! 👏🏻👌
what i tend to do is watch things on streaming then if i like them i will buy a Blu-ray or 4K of it.
Yeah this is a solid way to go mate. Muppet by name, not by nature 😉 lol Cheers for your comment mate 👌
Yeah I do the same
Yup Tubi! Lol i do same thing
Sane, I don't usevstreaming service that refuse to do physical media like appletv and Netflix, no point
@@sirducksworthythe3rd842 I would say there is more point to using those survices as you won't be able to watch that content otheerwise. Also both apple and netflix release things on physical.
Physical media is not dying, it's as strong as ever!
It’s never been better for collector’s and yeah it’s certainly not dying! Thanks for your comment mate 👍😃📀
true - its a lie that peoeple who are invested in streaming services perpetuate - fact is media is coming back in a big way hang onto it
@@ElectricGeek*collectors. Punctuation is tricky.
It can be. Thank. You’s 👍
Life changes. "suck it up fuzzball".
I'm in the US I know what you mean
I enjoy both fronts too mate. I love the thrill of thrift in cex, charity shops etc finding something for cheap in the ‘wild’ but it’s nice also indulging in the odd premium set and the newest releases. Cheers for watching mate, appreciate it 👍😃
Long live physical medium!!!
Long live indeed lord vader! 😉 Thanks for watching mate 😃
Thank you for reporting facts instead of alarmist clickbait propaganda.
Your welcome. I try and keep things honest on here. I’m not a definitive authority on anything but like to make genuine content and avoid clickbait . There’s enough of that out there 😩🤦🏻♂️ Thanks for watching 😃
It's because collectors are buying boutique and 4K releases which cost more. It doesn't look at units sold, just the revenue.
I don't support streaming anymore . Theirs isn't an app that has all the movies I currently own .
DVDs? So you’re one of the 10 people in the world still buying DVDs! 😂
@@ronthorn3Make that 11.
@jbwuzhere6819 haha 👍
I buy a lot to play on my truck display or RV. Loads and plays faster and better than Blu-ray for those smaller screens.
And buzzing u enjoyed a bitter sweet life 😅😃
Cracking video and news - you cannot beat getting something tangible in your hand, that can't be taken from you if the site falls down/crashes etc - and itll hopefully hold it's value.
Cant beat physical media, even if my war film collection is just DVD 😂.
Keep them coming mate! Another topper 😁
I absolutely agree. U don’t really own something in my humble opinion, unless u can physically take it out and show it to someone (insert innuendo here 🍆lol)
And i will watch your generation war mate. Must be coming up to my 5 yesr anniversary of having it so never a better time 🤦🏻♂️😂 Cheers for dropping by mate 👍
I agree. 😊
@@ElectricGeek absolutely! Haha it must be - get it watched and if you like it I'll get you the 4k version for a side by side review 😎😂
Physical media is growing faster now , due to streaming services raking in $$$$$$ by upping subscriptions and us collectors want to watch movies without relying on crappy internet connection.
I absolutely agree my man 🤜🏻🤛🏻
Don't forget the ads they added!
I buy my Blu Ray's off of eBay they're usually better priced. The delivery time isn't as good as Amazon though.
Oh great video btw Andy, keep up the good work 👍🏻
Thanks Kevin, yeah me neither.
Sounds like my kinda Facebook group. What's it called?
Wish we had a chain of HMV in the states miss going to the store and discovering titles shopping on line isn't the same
HMV is the last big one we have here mate.
At least FYE came back.
great video mate, its crazy that streaming services were made to cut the cost of say sky tv etc but now with all the services its coming up to the same price as having sky tv. i think people are deffo starting to cut back. i wanted to watch beetlejuice yesterday...not on streaming anywhere, good job i own it on physical media :)
@@ElectricGeek No problem, great subject 👍
Literally had a moment about this while thing yesterday... Theres a movie I've not seen, from like 8 or 10 years ago... Wanted to watch it, wasn't on any streaming... Was £8 to 'buy' digitally... The blu ray was only £6 from amazon, was a no brainer
I notice one full TV series that is in the early $20's which is insane. Sure it is on DVD but this is like 5 seasons for the full series.
I make it a point to go into my local HMV store and buy my DVDs I am part of the statistics, I’m sure of it
Long live HMV
I like to make a point of buying from them also. I’m in my local a lot ☺️ Great to here ur doing ur bit too 🫡 Thanks for your comment 😃👍
I just wish they'd ditch the Funko Pops & cuddly toys - in favour of a larger CD and Blu-ray selection 😢.
Three of you then. Like the amigos.
Anyone here know if HMV accepts cash payments?
@@Johnstone_Studios They did a few weeks ago - when I bought the new NIGHTWISH album at the Manchester store.
Agreed 100%. Great video!
Thanks man, glad you enjoyed it and thanks for dropping a comment 😃👌
I was in my local HMV last Saturday and it was booming. Not just physical media but also all sorts of products were selling in HMV too. There seem to be a real social atmosphere in there as well which you just can’t get with streaming plus I think also people are getting sick and tired of subscribing to infinite streaming subscriptions just to find out that their favourite film & TV show they always wanna watch anytime is no longer on there despite being the “Convenient Choice” and as we all know buying
digitally is useless anyway as it’s just buying the license that can disappear any time & no one ever owns anything.
It’s not just nostalgic it’s also a book 📕 too.
What do you mean? Like a historic, physical record kinda thing?
Great video Andy,
Me personally i prefer physical media more but find myself getitng a dvd not watching it again it then collects dust, and if ever want to watch somthing i get it off cinema paradiso or find it on streaming services , hmv im personally surprised is still going, but hope it continues going strong,
Cheers Kasim mate, yeah you’ve still got to be sensible with what u buy to avoid just amassing piles of crap u’ll not watch or watch again. Having a wee clear out time and again can create space and maybe even some currency to bring stuff u really want in 👌Cinema Paradiso is good way to watch discs without over flowing ur collecting. Cheers mate 😃
Completely wrong. They are trying to kill physical media at all costs but this situation has provoke a backfire, more discs are selling.
Target does have a nice selection online, though (and competitive with AMZN). Been buying that way from them for several years now.
In Australia Telstra box office is shutting down October 30th 2025.
In New Zealand this has happened also with Vodafone TV for streaming.
That 2001 design on your shelf is one of my favourites too. It has a permanent position on my shelf as well!
Thanks mate, yeah it’s a lovely boxset. All the film vaults are nice. I have the blade runner one too 👌☺️ Thanks for your comment 😃
@@ElectricGeek Absolutely agree!! I don't have blade runner but I got their shawshank. Love their designs
If the streaming services were offering wonderful films from the 50s, 60s etc, I would probably watch them more (Amazon Prime isn't too bad there)
If I cannot buy a physical copy it then I don't watch it unless I go to the theater.
That’s fair enough but jot for me that. You’re definitely missing out then i’d suggest buy i respect ur stance on it 🫡
New subscriber from Israel.
Awesome. Great to have you aboard! And all the way over in Israel as well! Hope you enjoy the content my friend 😃👍
I still deal with eBay and Amazon and a few other's.
Same. Ebay is def overlooked for new stuff. I think people associates it with second stuff understandably. Thanks for watching mate 🫡
I'm starting to be like this aswell. So many shows to catch up on.
Thank you Andy.
You’re very welcome as always Cheekster. Always first in, appreciate it mate 😃👍
Hello, Andy! I'm keeping physical media alive!😅
Nice one Bruno! Still doing ur bit in Brazil is it? 🇧🇷📀😃
@@ElectricGeek always!!
Mad interesting thoughts, love it. PM ain't going anywhere just yet! 💪
Thank you ☺️
Yeah dvd still being a thing is hard to get your head round.
Nice wee video mate very interesting
Cheers campfaither, good to see u in the comments ser. I hear u’ve been out power-washing? Lol
I'm gonna keep buying physical out of spite 😂
Haha Love it 😂
I laugh at myself now because when I bought a premium tv & Blu ray player I said I’d only purchase my favourite films… WRONG!! My upscaler is top notch although dvd cleans up nicely, I can get any Blu ray to 4k with Dolby Vision
Oh and Classic b&w movies look astounding like they must’ve done when the celluloid was fresh in the old days, deep & dark yet still “silver”
I’ve saved more money this month buying rather than renting out or purchasing through streaming
I’m already hooked I’m just giving in to it….
If HMV stopped ripping people off there would be even more sales.
I think they do fairly decent deals? What do u think is a rip off?
They are more competitive than Zavvi anyway who charge for delivery 😫 Prime is hard to beat, especially for one off flash deals. HMV often do 50% off sales which are good.
I bought the Boogeyman 1980 from Vinegar syndrome on 4k UHD.
Nice mate, i’ve still to check out any vinegar syndrome titles. Not the easy to come by over here in the UK and pretty niche. Heard good things tho 👍
It has already been proven that physical media are invincible
Long live physical media.
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Are you from Edinburgh by any chance?
I’m from Ayrshire my friend. About 45 minutes Southwest of glasgow 😃
@ElectricGeek brilliant mate i know the feeling thankfully mine has grown up a bit now thanks again man we will do hopefully the weather keeps up
It's not dying. It's increased in sales. Stop the propaganda.
No propaganda mate, i’m repeating what the majority of people think and challenging that. Thanks for ur input tho 👍
Never be what it was but people buy physical media because you actually own it
For me if a film is a 7/10 and i would want to rewatch it multiple times ill buy a copy on physical, otherwise ill leave it to streaming.
I have a similar approach. If i don’t think i’m likely to ever revisit a film then i usually get rid of it, otherwise ur just hoarding really. Thanks for your comment mate 👍😃
Love your user name btw, loved the monkey island games as a kid 👌☺️
@@ElectricGeek Thank you and me too.
Why don't you do a video on your setup👍
I’m definitely going to do this video David mate. It’s ridiculous i’ve gone this long without doing it! I’ve got it scheduled for next month, once the kids are back in nursery / school and house isn’t a bomb-site everyday 😩 Thanks for the suggestion mate 👍
You lost me at bbc reported 😂
Haha i know what u mean but don’t see any reason to disbelieve this one. Cheers for ur comment anyway 😃

So 1 figure contradicts the other, i would discount the 2nd one completely, talking rubbish, and if its not 2024 survey its not relevant!!!
