It’s because everybody starting to realize the truth that streaming services are a scam and everybody’s starting to panic not me. I’ve been collecting DVDs for over 20 years and they all still work and I never have to connect to the stupid Internet to watch my movies.
I remember what a friend of mine asked me when Netflix and some of these other streaming services started to come online. He was like, all of the movies you want to watch will soon be online, so you can get rid of your physical media and free up some space in your home. I was like, what happens if a movie you like gets taken down because it suddenly becomes “problematic” or they no longer want to pay royalties to keep it. No thanks, I’ll keep my 900+ movies and TV series in physical form. That way, I can watch what I want, when I want. Fast forward a few years and this actually started happening. My friend was like, I’ll bet you’re glad you kept your physical copies aren’t you. I was like, yep! 👍🏾😀
I've been trying to explain this to my wife. She does not get it. But I'm still keeping my physical media. Only got rid of the stuff I didn't want anymore.
Old school here I’ve always collected physical media ever since the 80’s music and movies ,I don’t and never will trust internet services because so many todays standers are effecting past and present music artists and films ,now my son doesn’t understand this no matter how I explain it to him, so my physical media collection will go some where after I’m gone. It’s a shame today’s generation see what’s around the futures corner of media control. Remember Fahrenheit 451 it was glimpses of what’s to come.
So I had a over 2,000 DvD and blue-ray collection but I just put it all on an external hard drive that now has over 5,000 movies and tv shows. I even made 2 copies incase. As along as I just keep up with the times and transfer it so much cheaper. I am not trying to be mean or anything either just saying that basically what I did was just put everything on onw DvD or whatever. it's the same logic , I have a physical copy of my collection via external hard drive , only it's 100 times cheaper and let's face it your really just buying the cheap DvD box and crap like that. Music is different and a little before my time so I cannot speak on that. Or at the very least you showed just do it anyways incase of like something crazy like a fire or something.
If it makes you feel better, I’m part of the mentioned younger generation, and I still collect physical media like DVDs & CDs. However, I’m definitely part of the minority.
I can definitely see a time in the near future when certain books, perhaps all are banned. Same for dvds and such, as they are a window into the past they wish to cover.
@@tonysobon4669you are getting a compressed version by putting on hard drives, or you would fill up your drives quickly. The advantage of physical media is you can get the best version with the least compression. I will stick with disk's and a Bluray player.
Also normal people that stream. What happened to the movie or show I wanted to watch it gone now. Physical media collectors I want to watch this. They go over an grab it an put it in the player an watch the movie or show.
Should be the same for gaming too. Especially if you have an Xbox Series X, there are some backwards compatible games that only work with the physical disc
I’ve been collecting my favorite shows and movies on DVD, Blu Ray and 4K Blu Ray for years. I recently got some working CRTs and some VCRs and I started collecting VHS tapes again. There’s a Savers five minutes away from my house. :)
Thanks for this video! Nice breakdown of the benefits of physical media collecting. The quality of a good blu-ray or 4K beats streaming in most cases and owning your media is a huge plus 😀.
100% agree. Censorship has gotten out of control on streaming sites - owning the original releases on physical media is the ONLY option to get the fully uncut versions. Streaming services seem to be getting worse and worse. I never used to collect physical, but I now prefer having the media there at all times and it's nicer to actually own it. I'm sensing others are seeing the same and physical media sales seems to be going back up which is just crazy when you think about how it went away for a while. I COMPLETELY forgot about all the special features on these things too, it's absolutely incredible how much more content you get!
Here is my issue , I had a 2,000 + collection of DvDs and Blue-ray. Once my cousin showed me how to torrent movies and such, I went through my collection and put everything on an external hard drive and then have just gone that route and sitting on like 5k+ movies and TV. I even made 2 copies incase when got messed up. Keep in mind not a collector and such and just a buyer and watcher but it got me thinking about just selling "used" external hard drives but leave the content on them. Just not sure how legal it would be.
I made the decision last week and I've already scooped up 50 Blurays for $140! Ones that I will rewatch. Way better deal than paying almost $50 a month to not be able to find anything on Netflix or Prime!!
As a gamer & movie collector this is how I view it The current prices (I just chose the highest tier for everything just to simplify it) Definitely don't need all of them, but to put it into perspective. internet $100 Netflix $23 hbo max $20 prime video $15 disney + / hulu $20 peacock $14 apple tv $10 Xbox Game Pass $20 Playstation Plus $18 Grand Total $240 x 12 = $2,880 1yr $5,760 2yr $8,640 3 yr $11,520 4 year $14,400 5 years $17,.280 6 years $20,160 7 years $23,040 8 years $25,920 9 years $28,800 10 years
One time I picked up 80 blu-rays for $30.. Quite a few of them were gross / sticky / & had nasty residue on it, but for $30.. I got about 60 something blu-rays in great condition. I have yet to top that type of lucky yet.
I feel like the comment section of this video is such a good summary of why new collectors feel unwelcome in the community There are so many reason collecting now is a great start, if nothing else its the fact that collecting is always fun and media preservation as well as not having to rely on streaming are probably more relevant than ever. Also, starting now is probably better than never starting lol Thanks for the video!
I’ve been collecting physical movie since DVDs first came out and there is nothing better than just pop in a movie on when you want to watch it. I never have to worry about Netflix having the movie I wanna watch or a bill every month. Now I only buy about four or five movies a year when they come out that I like, i’ll buy the new Ghostbusters and Godzilla King Kong movie when they come to 4K blu-ray and it will be so much cheaper than buying Disney+ Netflix and HBO for the year. Streaming is a big rip off I recommend everybody by their top hundred movies physically and you’ll see how much money you save because you will not need all of those streaming services every month
I also remember episodes of Spongebob and The Simpsons were completely banned and a certain joke in The Office episode “Dwight Christmas” was removed which makes a later scene make no sense at all
Im a young guy that just recently started grabbing 4k blu rays of all my favorite movies and started finding out that not all 4ks are the best versions of my favorite movies. Not only that, but a lot of streaming services are only streaming the worser versions. T2 is a great example. Now im tracking down all these versions of physical media and am finding myself with a bit of a collection lol
Yes, but the irony is, the fewer people who buy physical media brand new at full price, the less incentive there is for stores to carry them The fewer stores there are to sell them, the less incentive there is for studios to put the effort into producing the physical media. Don't get me wrong, physical media everyday all day, but we have to know what part we are playing in the decline of physical media.
Buying physical media new or used will show demand for it. Also it will force companies to create a good product at a fair price. Wealth is never last, it simply transfers. It will go from streaming to physical. In simple terms. Lol.
I believe Best Buy made a serious mistake by stop selling physical media! That was a nice crowd to shop in their stores, and crowds now look very low. They would never admit it though....😃 #TeamPhysical
I was a big collector like 10 years ago and sold it going digital. Now I’m back into physical and really happy with all the boutique labels and region free 4k releases.
I’ve ever stopped buying physical media, mainly CDs and vinyl I’ve been collecting them for at least 40 years, I have a few hundred dvds too,,there are so many benefits..
@@HomeVideoHangouts Thanks man love your channel! Do you even think easy to find $10 360 games, PS3 etc, will even keep going up in value over the next 3-6 years? I DO NOT COLLECT for value, I just love holding, using them and putting them on display but wanted your thoughts
I've been collecting physical media for several years now. With the bans on some really good movies, if you have the media you can watch or listen any time you want. Same with books as well.
I remember new DVD release's on "Tuesdays"! Waiting at Best Buys doors to open at 10:00 AM! Back then there were row upon row of DVD isles right at the front door.
I made my spare room into a cinema 🎥🍿 room and I've been picking up loads of dvds from charity shops and that , honestly it's the best thing I've done, watching all different movies on the big screen is way better because before I spent most of my time searching through netflix, prime, Disney ect for something to watch, ended up not watching anything 😂 if you have the room, create a cinema room, you'll be glad you did , we have family movie night still, 🎉🎉
@@HomeVideoHangouts yeah it's definitely worth it, I'm a big star wars fan so going to watch all the movies on the big screen over the weekend since it's star wars day on the 4th 🤩🤩🍿🎥
Excellent point on the used market as a resource for collecting. The downside is, like others have said, it doesn’t encourage companies to keep producing new physical media because they don’t see any money from that. My general strategy is to buy “new” for recent releases (that also applies to new releases of older films), but buying used for older releases if I can.
Great video. I have loads of videos,.dvds, cassettes and vinyl. You can't beat going to a charity shop or car boot sale and seeing some great goodies. It's holding the physical copy with booklets and the covers etc that make it more exciting. Also nostalgic and remembering where you bought some of them or had as presents.
Thanks for this video enjoyed it 😊. I'm still new to collecting movies but I have buzz for selecting and physical holding it in my hands, brings me back to blockbuster ❤
I already knew it from the Start where it was just announced before trending, that Streaming Services with digital Media will become a huge Problem and cause a lot of Damage to Movies, Games, Shows and Music. If you own physical Copies only then you can be sure to actually OWN the Stuff you paid for. Digital Media what can only be accessed online you never actually own despite you paid for it, because then they just can remove it and take it away from you or just completely changing it because "problematic" nowadays for "m0dErN aUdIenCeS". I remember how many People laughed at me first when I was telling them that back then, but now they finally realized that I wasn't a "dumb paranoid old Guy" who's against technical Evolution or something and that I just was telling them about the dark Reality 😀
I work at an auction on the weekend, we sell physical media cheap… sometimes CD’s and records go a little high but generally they are going for less and less, especially DVD’s. But we’re kind of a small town auction.
Ive had a huge DVD library for years that I picked up from Car Boot sales / Swap Meets and thrift stores ..I love older harder to find movies That Netflix never have any and on Prime they're crazy expensive to watch ... Some of the older films fetch good money too on the second hand market so I think my collection has probably increased in value ..
Ive purchased all the tna impact ppvs on dvd and the entire Dragonball, dbz, gt, and dragon ball super on dvd recently over the last 6 months. Tons of stuff that isnt available on streaming. Ive been getting killer deals buying used and new. Great advice
me going out to thrift stores and going through their dvd bins is another level..p.s when comes to streaming its so overwhelming to find something i always resort to watching a movie i already watched 70% of the time
You made some fantastic points in your video. I have begun collecting 4K UHD's of films i really like and would repeat watch, also picked up DVD's when 6x for £1 in charity shops and have always bought physical console games. I do think media centre's are a good compromise for people that like Netflix style content delivery but without the loss of content being taken offline, rip your films / tv to a hard disk and then stream it to any household device.
New sud here/ for me, I started growing my collection again. I found people are going back to physical media also. I love movies and I’m love sharing it with others. I love having it in my hand. I just shot my first steelbook wall video. Let’s gooo!
I would add that if you're diving into physical media, audio/video is a big part of it. Just like the video said when it comes to buying the media itself, the used market is also the way to go. A/V is also a huge jungle, so here are some tips. If you already have a TV, a soundbar is the most obvious and fairly cheap upgrade. You won't believe how much of a difference a proper speaker can make when watching movies, or even TV shows. If you're more ambitious and want to go for a proper surround setup, but don't want to drop a lot of money, start small: surround receiver and a stereo speaker set. A receiver (or amp) with a lot of miles left on it can be found really cheap - my dad is using my old Denon receiver now, and it's over 15 years old and still kicking. It doesn't support Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, but if your player does, you can often set your player to decode the signal instead, and you still get Atmos. The most important speakers in a surround setup are the front speakers (or stereo speakers), and the center speaker. And it's a good idea to keep those 3 speakers within the same brand/series of speakers if possible because they'll have the same sound profile. The rear or side speakers do not have to be the same brand/series, but don't go too cheap because they are still important. The same goes for the subwoofer. If you get some beefy floor speakers, the sub might not be needed, but that's up to you to decide. Also don't go too cheap when it comes to players. While you don't need the most expensive and advanced player on the market, it is important to keep an eye out for certain issues. Some modern 4K players have issues with layer shift, something that was completely done away with in the early days of Blu-ray, but somehow came back. You'll see this as a slight pause in the film, maybe less than a second. That said, if you don't care about 4K, any brand name Blu-ray player will do you good. And at this point you can probably pick up 10 of them for $20 and have backups. The important thing to worry about when it comes to players is: do you want to import films. If so, you might need a region free player for DVD and Blu-ray, 4K is completely region free. If you're a new collector, take it from someone who's been collecting since the 80s - don't care about 4K. At least not in the beginning. It's expensive, it requires both a good TV and a fairly expensive player for you to notice the difference in quality, and a format like that needs a very good soundbar, or a surround setup. I collect 4Ks myself now, but it took a long time to jump on the wagon, simply because the discs are still super expensive compared to Blu-ray, and I needed both a new TV and player to notice the difference. Don't get me wrong, the upgrade IS worth it.. if you dump a lot of money into it. And Blu-ray is great - good video quality on modern screens, uncompressed audio, cheap players, and it looks good on a 15 year old TV! The last thing I wanna say - if you're going for DVD instead of Blu-ray and 4K, be aware of the early days of DVD. DVD was out for some years before 16:9 TVs became standard, and you can still find 4:3 cropped versions of movies in the bargain bins, or letterboxed movies (also called non-anamorphic widescreen), and those look like shit on modern TVs. I'm certainly not a Blu-ray / 4K purist, and still own a lot of DVDs, but those kinds are crap.
Nice! I haven't actually watched a laserdisc but when I see them in stores I always appreciate their cover art. Much bigger space for art compared to a DVD or Blu-Ray.
I have two VHS players and two (when they work!) DVD players and a truckload of VHS DVD and CDs in my place. I want control of what I can watch and what's more what I know I can watch when I am in the mood. I am not subject to the whim and sway of some outside party, and what they see fit that I should see or not see!
been grabbing physical copies for killer deals lately, taking advantage of stores trying to rid the physical media stock is going to pay off later on...
I have hundreds of regular dvds but I stopped collecting 12 years ago but as of 3 weeks ago i started 4k and picked up the transformers steel book box set and rise of the beast plus the professional. So now I'm waiting on a few preorders! . What book shelves are you using are those billys ? I'm looking to get new storage now so it's gonna grow pretty quick. I buy everything physical now including games it's not worth it for digital I'll buy all my stuff and have if forever.
Just discovered your channel randomly just a few minutes ago. Man, what a great video on collecting physical media. I have a massive collection and have been collecting blu rays since 2010. Just upgraded to 4k last NOV. Still collect both. Awesome insight and please keep the videos coming.
The best part for me about beginning to collect physical media again is the Bonus Features and the cool pamphlets inside! I'm a GenZer, and I was recently influenced towards cancelling most of my streaming services and buying used DVDs and BluRays, and finding those DVD Special Features and pamphlets is bringing back so much nostalgia! I used to PORE over those when I was a kid, with my grandma's DVD collection! SO much cooler than streaming services, and I haven't missed them yet!
I agreed with everything you've said. I've got tons of laserdiscs, vinyl, cds and dvds. Problem is I'm 57 and probably not gonna live many more years. I've got all this cool stuff but after I'm gone what was the point...?
Most of the things I have collected and have enjoyed as hobbies I have either sold or given them away. Only have a couple of areas left but if I'm having fun I'll keep going while I can. Just need to have a plan as to what happens if one croaks before their time.
I buy used a lot too. Buying used doesn't support the producers of the movie like buying new does but buying used does still support the physical media hobby and stores that sell used physical media.
Ive.been collecting records.for.50/yrs i.also have a couple of thousand.dvds.vhs ,cassettes,i do.use you tube to stream sometimes ,great.channel.liked.and subbed and hello.form.England.😁
Cinema is one of the last things in this world I feel a connection to, and the more great films I own, the more connected I feel. Streaming makes me feel nothing
As a fan of stereoscopic films, the last few years have demonstrated most 3D discs are out of print now and as a result prices are rising and many are becoming hard to find. The best time to collect is always now!
I tell people you can buy movies from a thrift store for less than you would rent them for back in the day and you can return them whenever you want without a late fee.
Physical media isn't dying as many are claiming but it is becoming a solid niche market. What that means is that prices will increase, perhaps quite a bit, to meet the lack of volume and availability will be more limited. But there will always be people who want to enjoy their media in the best quality. 60 some-odd years on albums are still a thing for a reason. I have to watch/hear my favorites in their best quality and streaming just can't do that. Disney+ has one of the best streaming bitrates and A New Hope on Disney+ vs A New Hope on 4k Blu-ray is quite noticeable to me. I'll always have a copy of my favorites on the latest tech. I've owned A New Hope on Laser Disc, VHS (maybe 3-4 copies?), DVD, Blu-ray and now 4k. If they put it out in 128K, I'll buy it.
Have been keeping/collecting dvds and cds for a long time. Got into blurays for a bit, but dvds are good enough for me. Some obsure tv shows are only on dvd also. Ive been collecting those for years now. Trying to get all the old school 80s/90s tv shows i watched as a kid. And obviously a heap of movies lol. A lot of enjoyment in collecting physical media. Subscribed!
The bargain bin at Walmart and complete series for 60 or less. Got south park 1-10 for 44$. Ad supported streaming with no sign up/sub like Pluto, Tubi and Roku. If you grew up with blockbuster and cable, these are indeed good times especially when you consider cost of everything else with inflation.
It depends, the cost of Vinyl has almost doubled in the space of 2 years. Im in Australia. When i started getting into vinyl 5 years ago. It was pretty rare to see anything new over $30 AU. Almost everything had some sort of liner notes because that's what many love about the media. Today its $55 or greater for a new release and no liner notes on many releases. Retail stores like JB Hifi frequently would do 2 for $50 deals. It really helped me getting started. However i know that if i look after them, i won't be subjected to the righs moving between artists and labels and or streamers pulling the content because of political trends. Just last weekend i bought Moana and Encanto on vinyl for my daughter. She absolutely loved it. You don't get that experience with digital.
Consider the following; First Spotify is free with ads so people give all their CDs and records away Then Spotify stops being free so it’s a small fee Then Spotify is expensive
I use Spotify when going to thrift shops. I see an artist I am unfamiliar with. A quick Spotify search to check them out. Good way to broaden my music tastes.
sometimes, people often have already donated or sold off their physical media years ago, so yard sales and thrifts supply are often dwindling, or its all modern junk movies at alot of thrifts now.
Buying a large lot is a great way to start a collection. It takes a lot of the flavor out of it once lots start having a bunch of duplicates, but dang those first lots are so much fun. All the better if it's a local you're buying from as shipping can be high.
I started a few months before the walmart and best buy announcements by complete chance and now those dvds overstock are entering the flipper market. Ive been getting sealed stuff at flea markets for $1 or less. Its insane. I wonder how long this flood will last before it dries out. I also do the goodwill outlet and a dvd is 15 cents. I know this wont last
I'll collect physical media as long as it's available. Ive been hearing/reading that studios may start altering their movies and tv shows. Like leaving out certain scenes or leaving out episodes. MAX has left out 1 or 2 episodes of FRIENDS for example. Streaming services can take off a show or movie whenever they want. Physical media is yours forever and cant be altered.
As a PC gamer, I can say I do not miss 5 plus CDs to install and a key code you had to have. I think movies will always have a physical market due to better quality on a disc but gaming disc is going away. Basically, anything on Xbox Series and PS5 you need a patch or maybe even online to play.
I never got rid of my CDs. I saved some DVDs. But I'm so fed up with streaming (including free streaming), I went back to basics. Started getting more DVDs, I will buy more videotapes (AKA VHS) soon, and I even bought books. Two hardcover books for $3 at my local thrift store.
I started collecting again in december 2023. 350 blu-rays in collection and I am proud of it. Turning point was when streaming platforms destroyed everything with w@ke sh&t
Always loved having physical media. I have a good number of DVD’s, BluRay, XBox and PS games (PS4 and PS5). Still have some original XBox games 1st gen. Recently started going back and buying some old classic anime like Macross and Vampire Hunter D. Fun hobby!
Yes it is! I sold off a good amount of my retro videogames to upgrade my home theaters sound system but I do miss having a big collection of videogames. It is hard to find time to play them too though.
I have collected dvds for twenty years, and now blu ray discs too, mostly pre-owned from thrift stores. My worry now is the possibility of some movies being released on streaming platforms that will never be released onto physical media. To date I am told The Zone of Interest remains unavailable. It's a minor gripe, when I have many wonderful titles to dip into at home
Streaming companies are already removing titles from people's libraries. When it gets worse, we will see a massive shift back to physical media. Game companies are doing it too, classic example being The Crew (and others since then). Buy now while physical media is cheap.
I definitely spend more money a month on acquiring new media than I would on a streaming service, but the best part is you don't have to, if you don't have the money to or run into financial difficulty you can stop buying them and keep what you have (or even sell what you dont want to keep)
I use both honestly but I have started to cancel a lot of my streaming services especially Netflix mainly because of the price increase but I hate that certain movies and series are always being taken off certain platforms for example I remember years ago family guy use to be on Netflix now it’s exclusively on Hulu so I’m starting to build my physical media back up
You make excellent point hate to say I don’t buy physical media no more took to much space last physical Blu-ray I bought was Megan iTunes will not play uncut version for some weird reason after I bought movie., I converted my physical media to digital and kept some physical media box sets and steel books
Definitely the best time to collect physical media. No question
Why not 5 years ago? Everything was cheaper.
The sooner, the better. As he said above, everything was so much cheaper years ago.
I went to a thrift store and bought vhs tapes for 50 cents now i have over 200 tapes and I also collect dvds cds and books

@@tonysobon4669hard drives can crash and get lost 😞
I made the decision last week and I've already scooped up 50 Blurays for $140! Ones that I will rewatch. Way better deal than paying almost $50 a month to not be able to find anything on Netflix or Prime!!
Exactly! Great job!

Quite a few of them were gross / sticky / & had nasty residue on it, but for $30.. I got about 60 something blu-rays in great condition.
I have yet to top that type of lucky yet.
Despite their solid foreign content, a lot of inhouse Netflix stuff is crap.
I feel like the comment section of this video is such a good summary of why new collectors feel unwelcome in the community
There are so many reason collecting now is a great start, if nothing else its the fact that collecting is always fun and media preservation as well as not having to rely on streaming are probably more relevant than ever. Also, starting now is probably better than never starting lol
Thanks for the video!
Thanks for the comment!
why do new collectors feel unwelcome? You've totally lost me
As an audiophile that sweet Dolby True HD keeps me coming back too! Can’t wait to eventually build an atmos rig!
Atmos is fun too!
I love physical media I have been building my collection for awhile now. Plus its nostalgic and a past time.
Couldn't agree more!
Very true! The costs of streaming services can add up quickly when you have multiple.
Plus some platforms have started to censor and edit old 'offensive' releases
Ya that is unfortunate. Splash is one movie I have in my collection where that was the case.
@@HomeVideoHangouts what happened with "Splash"??
The streaming service version of splash cuts out some of the scenes that contain nudity.
I also remember episodes of Spongebob and The Simpsons were completely banned and a certain joke in The Office episode “Dwight Christmas” was removed which makes a later scene make no sense at all
And the old ones are way better. not full of woke crap 😂
Can’t really blame people with the retail prices of new blu-ray/ DVD movies they expect us to pay
Buying physical media new or used will show demand for it. Also it will force companies to create a good product at a fair price. Wealth is never last, it simply transfers. It will go from streaming to physical. In simple terms. Lol.
Well vinyls still exist and aren’t going anywhere anytime soon new releases are also being put on them so the same will probably happen to movies
I believe Best Buy made a serious mistake by stop selling physical media! That was a nice crowd to shop in their stores, and crowds now look very low. They would never admit it though....😃 #TeamPhysical
I totally agree!
I was a big collector like 10 years ago and sold it going digital. Now I’m back into physical and really happy with all the boutique labels and region free 4k releases.
Awesome! It’s never too late to restart a collection!
Also. Support your local library. It's free to watch and read
Yes! Libraries are great as well!
Couldn't agree more, feels like physical media is having a bit of a revival
Yes it definitely seems like it!
It obviously is.
I’ve been collecting dvds for years. I’ve never signed up for any streaming services because at any time they can delete shows and movies
I’ve ever stopped buying physical media, mainly CDs and vinyl I’ve been collecting them for at least 40 years, I have a few hundred dvds too,,there are so many benefits..
Awesome!
I started collecting back in 1997 .
Nice!
Wow 1997
You must be at retirement age huh ? 😏
@@graciemckenna8283 I’m 44 and been collection since 1998..you sure are a donut aren’t you sweetie 😂
i miss the days when you'd buy a movie or tv series on dvd and it came with a cool box with all kinds of goodies.
At least there is still a thriving used market for physical media.
So do I. Everything is so cheaply made now....especially complete series box sets.
I've been collecting physical media for several years now. With the bans on some really good movies, if you have the media you can watch or listen any time you want. Same with books as well.
yes a lot of the same principles apply to books as well.
I like picking up my blu rays and dvd's at garage sales so much more cheaper than the thrift store
Nice! I have gotten some good deals at garage sales as well.
I've been grabbing a lot of them from garage sales also. Purchased around 100 Blu-ray and 400 regular DVDs for around $100.
I remember new DVD release's on "Tuesdays"! Waiting at Best Buys doors to open at 10:00 AM!
Back then there were row upon row of DVD isles right at the front door.
I made my spare room into a cinema 🎥🍿 room and I've been picking up loads of dvds from charity shops and that , honestly it's the best thing I've done, watching all different movies on the big screen is way better because before I spent most of my time searching through netflix, prime, Disney ect for something to watch, ended up not watching anything 😂 if you have the room, create a cinema room, you'll be glad you did , we have family movie night still, 🎉🎉
Great Idea! I would like to have a dedicated cinema room eventually too.
@@HomeVideoHangouts yeah it's definitely worth it, I'm a big star wars fan so going to watch all the movies on the big screen over the weekend since it's star wars day on the 4th 🤩🤩🍿🎥

Word! I’ve been collecting since 1998
Excellent point on the used market as a resource for collecting. The downside is, like others have said, it doesn’t encourage companies to keep producing new physical media because they don’t see any money from that. My general strategy is to buy “new” for recent releases (that also applies to new releases of older films), but buying used for older releases if I can.
Thats a good strategy
Ima physical media guy ima keep buying cds 💿 DVDs and blue ray physical media forever 🤟🤟🤟👍👍👍👍📀📀📀📀 let’s keep it alive 😅
Awesome!
Library sales too !

Very true! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for this video enjoyed it 😊. I'm still new to collecting movies but I have buzz for selecting and physical holding it in my hands, brings me back to blockbuster ❤
Im glad you enjoyed it! With blockbuster gone we have to start our own collections. My house is slowly turning into a blockbuster LOL 😂
Yes there are more and more problems with streaming
I work at an auction on the weekend, we sell physical media cheap… sometimes CD’s and records go a little high but generally they are going for less and less, especially DVD’s. But we’re kind of a small town auction.
Nice!
@@HomeVideoHangouts Wish i could find 80's CD with the packaging that was so great. They were like 15-20$ in 85-86...
Ive had a huge DVD library for years that I picked up from Car Boot sales / Swap Meets and thrift stores ..I love older harder to find movies
That Netflix never have any and on Prime they're crazy expensive to watch ...
Thank you! Thanks for sharing!
I've been getting so many almost new blu-rays from thrift stores. It's awesome!
That's awesome!
me going out to thrift stores and going through their dvd bins is another level..p.s when comes to streaming its so overwhelming to find something i always resort to watching a movie i already watched 70% of the time
Yes its only gotten harder to find quality content on streaming services
You made some fantastic points in your video. I have begun collecting 4K UHD's of films i really like and would repeat watch, also picked up DVD's when 6x for £1 in charity shops and have always bought physical console games. I do think media centre's are a good compromise for people that like Netflix style content delivery but without the loss of content being taken offline, rip your films / tv to a hard disk and then stream it to any household device.
Thanks for the kind words!
New sud here/ for me, I started growing my collection again. I found people are going back to physical media also. I love movies and I’m love sharing it with others. I love having it in my hand. I just shot my first steelbook wall video. Let’s gooo!
Nice! Thanks for subscribing!
I've got the Criterion Collection of 'The Princess Bride' on Blu-ray. I think it cost me $4.98 on eBay.
Nice! Sounds like a deal!
Another plus of physical media is creating your own "streaming service" by creating a media server from ripping your movies for personal use!
I’m constantly adding to my Emby server with movies from Thrift stores.
Thanks for sharing!
I’ve always collected Physical Media. Funny you mentioned Laserdisc because I am a big collector of Laserdiscs I love watching movies on that format
Same! Great strategy!
Nice video! Exciting to get back into collecting this year
I have hundreds of regular dvds but I stopped collecting 12 years ago but as of 3 weeks ago i started 4k and picked up the transformers steel book box set and rise of the beast plus the professional.
I collect anime dvd /blu ray as some get taken off app so I can all ways be able watch it
i am here for both. i love my dvds and collecting. physical media is not dead! but streaming services are not all bad.
Ya nothing wrong with using both
Plus if you own the movie they can't censor the movies because 0.00000000001 of people was triggered because of a movie was a product of it's time
Absolutely! I try to tell people this. Very few actually get it. If you love movies, get the physical copy.
Exactly!!

For music? Cds sound better than streaming music.
I agreed with everything you've said. I've got tons of laserdiscs, vinyl, cds and dvds. Problem is I'm 57 and probably not gonna live many more years. I've got all this cool stuff but after I'm gone what was the point...?
Donate to music stores 🏬 or pass them to someone that will cherish them
Most of the things I have collected and have enjoyed as hobbies I have either sold or given them away. Only have a couple of areas left but if I'm having fun I'll keep going while I can. Just need to have a plan as to what happens if one croaks before their time.
Enjoy them while you can and then leave them to someone else who enjoys them. If you curate a collection it can be left to your loved ones.
Another great channel, and another message I completely agree with. I *will not* own nothing, “and be happy.”

In my current financial situation, I rarely buy my movies new, but is buying used still supporting the work that goes into them?
I buy used a lot too. Buying used doesn't support the producers of the movie like buying new does but buying used does still support the physical media hobby and stores that sell used physical media.

Ya I bet the 3D movies will be harder to find or more expensive because a lot of people don't have 3D tvs anymore.
I tell people you can buy movies from a thrift store for less than you would rent them for back in the day and you can return them whenever you want without a late fee.
Thats very true!
Good plan!
Im glad i started collecting over 20 years ago

It's almost like there should be some sort of store you could go to and rent movies. Wouldn’t that be neat?
Yes we will call it blockbuster
The bargain bin at Walmart and complete series for 60 or less. Got south park 1-10 for 44$. Ad supported streaming with no sign up/sub like Pluto, Tubi and Roku.
If you grew up with blockbuster and cable, these are indeed good times especially when you consider cost of everything else with inflation.
Good points!

Consider the following;

Then Spotify stops being free so it’s a small fee
Then Spotify is expensive

I use Spotify when going to thrift shops. I see an artist I am unfamiliar with. A quick Spotify search to check them out. Good way to broaden my music tastes.
If one hits thrift stores and estate sales, one can find great deals on DVD's. Then, these DVD's can be watched over and over again.
sometimes, people often have already donated or sold off their physical media years ago, so yard sales and thrifts supply are often dwindling, or its all modern junk movies at alot of thrifts now.
I never stopped buying CD's, in fact I ramped up during covid. I keep my entire library on USB in my car whilst my physical media is safe at home.
Awesome! Keep it going!
My dad has been upgrading his collection since 1982. 15000 DVDs, 10000 BluRay, 2000 4K
Thats awesome! #Goals
Wow!!!!!!
I have over 7300 movies in my collection
Nice!
I know this wont last
Good points! We have to get the deals while we can!
Yes this is Unfortunatly very common
As a PC gamer, I can say I do not miss 5 plus CDs to install and a key code you had to have. I think movies will always have a physical market due to better quality on a disc but gaming disc is going away. Basically, anything on Xbox Series and PS5 you need a patch or maybe even online to play.
Good points! PC software has definitely gone digital quicker than other types of physical media.
I collect physical media DVD'S that is don't have streaming services
I always buy DVD's at target sometimes ebay or Amazon
I started collecting again in december 2023. 350 blu-rays in collection and I am proud of it. Turning point was when streaming platforms destroyed everything with w@ke sh&t

great video best i’ve seen on “why physical media”
Wow, thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Amen brother Amen
I have collected dvds for twenty years, and now blu ray discs too, mostly pre-owned from thrift stores. My worry now is the possibility of some movies being released on streaming platforms that will never be released onto physical media. To date I am told The Zone of Interest remains unavailable. It's a minor gripe, when I have many wonderful titles to dip into at home
Streaming companies are already removing titles from people's libraries. When it gets worse, we will see a massive shift back to physical media. Game companies are doing it too, classic example being The Crew (and others since then). Buy now while physical media is cheap.
Very good video, love physical art.As a fan of horror from the 70s and 80s I'm really enjoying the bluray boutique labels putting out gems.
Yes some of the art from boutique labels is very cool
What does Best Buy even sell if not physical media? Just appliances now?
Mainly appliances, tvs, phones, computers and some videogames
Especially if the internet goes down
Good point!
The greedy conglomerates have caught on to the new trend and are jacking up prices. I will start to look into the used market, as you suggested.
Good plan!
I definitely spend more money a month on acquiring new media than I would on a streaming service, but the best part is you don't have to, if you don't have the money to or run into financial difficulty you can stop buying them and keep what you have (or even sell what you dont want to keep)
I use both honestly but I have started to cancel a lot of my streaming services especially Netflix mainly because of the price increase but I hate that certain movies and series are always being taken off certain platforms for example I remember years ago family guy use to be on Netflix now it’s exclusively on Hulu so I’m starting to build my physical media back up
All good reasons to build your collection!
You could spend $15 a month on streaming for 30 years and spend upwards over $23,000 and own nothing.
And the actual creators get screwed at the same time! The corporations win everyone else loses
Very true!
You make excellent point hate to say I don’t buy physical media no more took to much space last physical Blu-ray I bought was Megan iTunes will not play uncut version for some weird reason after I bought movie., I converted my physical media to digital and kept some physical media box sets and steel books
Boxsets and Steelbooks are fun to collect.
