Is Physical Media Worth It Anymore?!

- In this video, I discuss both the pros and cons of collecting physical media. I have collected physical media ever since I was a kid picking up VHS tapes at garage sales, but even I have noticed some of the downsides of this hobby!

I prefer physical media over streaming anyday, especially since you own a movie and not have to deal with it being removed off any service. I rather watch what I own instead of pirating
Yep! Totally understandable!
@@BrandoCritic Problem with steaming... Ok so what a lot of people seems to forget when streaming is that: 1: You do NOT own the film, so take Amazon prime for example , a tv show/ film can be removed from their platform due to licence rights running out, (aka them losing the rights to have that film/tv on their platform)
even if you buy a film from Amazon prime to watch later, like I did. So there is 2 options with Amazon , buy or rent a film (these are for the ones you have to pay for) I paid for a film , to keep , so I could stream this film when I wanted , after 5-6 weeks the film was removed from my Amazon Library because Amazon lost the rights , despite me paying for the film.
Same with all streaming platforms. Like HBO (now HBO max?) hulu and Disney and Netflix, it's annoying having to pay for multiple streaming servers, because the films/tv shows have been removed , this is the down side to streaming.
Pros of Physical media , DVD , Blu ray and Blu ray 4k:
- It is yours to keep.
- The Quality is better and higher ( as you don't have to worry about internet, cut out , unlike streaming!)
- Special features and more of!!
- Steelbooks can look amazing with the artwork
Thanks Michael! You know, I made a video on this very topic 😂
I couldn’t agree more
Having a hard copy of a movie I love is amazing
When Disney removed some dialogue from The French Connection I knew that owing physical media was paramount to preserving the films I love.
Yep. You own it in its original state
@@BrandoCritic “How did you know to buy the disc?”
“Never trust a Mouse.”
“But he could have been a Rat.”
“Never trust anybody.”
What’s that from?
@@BrandoCritic
I'm sorry I don't understand.
Yeah neither do I
Always collect for yourself, not others. I see that a lot in the community people picking up films they don't even watch!
Interesting... you think people are just buying movies to "fit in"?
@@BrandoCritic I think that does go on yes. I think some get caught up with the buying of titles to show as currently popular then months later think why did I pick this up 🤷 still sat on the shelf unwatched. I can't see why someone would collect that way but it happens . Also see because it's cheap and something to show on the channel but I think we have all done that blind brought and then regretted buying .I think it's best to stay true to your own tastes and reflect who you are as a collector. I have a channel myself based in UK, my preferred genres are Action, Sci fi with a little Martial arts and a sprinkling of horror.
That's kind of what I allude to in my segment about balance between buying the movie and actually watching it
@@BrandoCritic yep. I do have a watch pile of films I have purchased but not got round to yet but in time I will. But to buy films that you aren't really interested in because they are trending at the present time just seems odd to me . At least rent it digitally or go to the cinema and watch it rather than just watching a trailer and blind buying off others reviews to me just seems a waste especially when it's gathering dust on the shelf months later unwatched and then got rid of.
Totally! All the films that I have that I haven’t seen are either super famous or have been recommended COUNTLESS times. Movies like Schindler’s List and The Green Mile… I know… it’s embarrassing I haven’t seen those yet haha
For me, avoiding the completionist mindset is most important. It really add more shelf space and funds for film I like.
Totally!
Physical media is beautiful and still king ❤
I agree!
2001 space Odysse
That's a good one for sure!
Yes, although a ripped copy that you convert and stream over your own network is hard to distinguish.
Yep! That's right
I started buying physical media. Last year after a thunder storm. Knocked out wifi for a week. My family made fun of me for buying blu-rays but I got the last laugh . While they were bored I was watching movies😅
Maybe you should make fun of them for choosing to live in an area where thunder storms knock out wifi for a week 😂
If you want to up your game, install Jellyfin and rip that media to disc. It's a much better streaming existence and you can always put the physical disc in if you want to, but I don't bother as the experience is pretty much the same. It's the connection over the net that strips most of the picture and sound quality that gets stripped.
Are power outages really that big of a thing out there? I guess I'm lucky haha
I like physical, but on my iPad i download like 20 movies that i love watching, so even if no internet or power goes, i can watch
Although I probably have over 1,000 movies in my collection, every single one of them is a movie that I love a lot. That limits the expense to the point that it's not much of a drain on my budget.
Totally!
There's a lot worse things to spend your money on, Alcohol , cigarettes , drugs etc etc
Of course
@@BrandoCritic I think it's more retail therapy for me.
Yes… but don’t be a drunk with your retail therapy haha
Horrible logic
Subscriptions to streaming services...
I was almost caught in the FOMO mentality and spent lots of money and decided to rethink this. 1) No more blind buys. This is the biggest waste of money. Watch it free first then decide. 2) Do I really need to watch it in 4K? Majority of the movies I watch is a flash decision. I can watch the DVD and not care about the quality of the movie. 3) Buy used DVDs for $1. This goes back to Number 2. If I watch this movie more than once, then I can decide if it's worth an upgrade. 4) Life is short. How many movies do I really need to own to make me completely happy? I found out that the more I own, the more I get suffocated. I keep my collection under a limit.
Happiness isn't acquiring more stuff... it's living more life!
These are all great points and I've found this based on my experience. I don't do DVDs really though, I will just torrent stuff and watch it and if I like it a lot, will look for a used BD, otherwise I will just delete it.
Count me in, Brandon. I love physical media. When I was younger, I used to have a huge Blu-ray collection. Until I had to sell half of it due to dire times. I still keep most of the movies I love. Nowadays, I've transitioned more to music. I have over 500 cds in my collection. And I've started getting into vinyl, and I plan to only getting albums that I think are even better on vinyl. Until the day I die, I'll never stop buying physical media.
That’s awesome! As long as there is balance right?! Still have money to pay off the mortgage haha
@@BrandoCritic Trust me, I'm being very careful with my spendings.
That’s good
As much as I like streaming, I say physical media is still better cause when it comes to streaming, that movie or tv show could disappear from your list at any time. Not to mention, your WiFi could go out at any time as well, which prevents you from streaming. But you don’t have to worry about that kind of problem with physical media. PS, some people on social media are thinking about ditching streaming and going back to physical media.
Yep! Totally! All valid points I brought up in the video which you touched upon too
I think the same way too. What’s the point in having a streaming service when the movies and shows you want to watch keep disappearing. And Wi-Fi is still a problem when there is very bad weather.
Totally true!
Why not both? I rip my physical media to disc and stream it over my network. It makes it easy to keep tabs on the integrity of my collection and it allows me to stream what I like over my local network with minimal loss in quality over the disc.
And that way you can watch it on the go
I have torrented movies and still do and if i enjoyed the movie and can see myself watching it again I'll buy a physical copy
Yeah that’s fair
I do the same, I’ll torrent them but, if it’s good, it’s getting bought. I also have a regal unlimited subscription so I go to the theaters every week.
Reasons why physical media is important.
1: buying it helps Film Preservation
2: You ALWAYS have it and can’t be taken from you, in comparison to streaming where they remove stuff constantly.
3: Bonus Features that add more content like interviews, behind the scenes content, deleted scenes, etc.
4: Doesn’t require the internet to use since not everyone have an immediate internet access.
5: you don’t have to pay a monthly subscription
6: to get the content you want on streaming you will likely need multiple services, meaning multiple subscriptions making it way more expensive than cable: aka what streaming was trying to replace. If you go the one service route, you are missing out on plenty of movies from companies that have their own services. Where physical media is as simple as buying what movies (or other forms of media) you want to buy with no catches.
Yep! All good points!
Also lot of special editions and releases came in unique presentation. I have Phantasm movies that came in "Silver Sphere" package. Hellraiser trilogy that came in shape of Configuration. Blind Dead collection which came in shape of little coffin (super funny), and Evil Dead that came in shape of Necronomicon. You quite literally can't get that in digital.
Also lot of physical releases just look good on your shelf, some have terrific covers, Arrow releases for example, all feature unique, hand drawn covers. Yeah, they are usually lot more expensive, but I've never had Arrow DVD\BLR that I wasn't absolutely satisfied with. Those guys are movie buffs and they always do great justice to mostly cult classic movies.
Lastly, for lot of us, collective movies on DVD\BLR is actually hobby unto itself. It gives you the reason to go and seek out some of those movies and you are looking for very specific releases in some cases. For example, I know lot of people who were looking for some Elm Street remake release in my country, they all agreed movie was crap, but the edition released was in some package that had fake blood on it, so when you touch DVD fake blood will spill all over cover. It was more or less collector's item, rather then someone actually wanting to watch that crap.
At least with physical media, you don't have to worry about someone hacking into your streaming service to delete your digital media library
Interesting… how often does that happen
@@BrandoCriticprobably less often than people’s houses being broken into and having their physical media stolen.
If I were to break into a house, I’d go for the immediate valuables as opposed to bringing boxes to haul the dudes physical media lol
@@BrandoCritic depends, are they Criterion and Arrow collections?? lol
Even still… gold necklace > Boutique labels
Great video man! Everyone collects for a variety of reasons and as long as there not hurting themselves or their families financially, I think it can all be valid. Thanks for the shout man!
Absolutely! Thanks man! Appreciate it!
Not when it's affecting what these studios put out. They know collectors eat up and repackaged movie and waste time on re releases instead of new stuff
I don’t quite understand my guy
@@GrayWolf5000bro what are you talking about
Seems like he commented on the wrong thread lol
Exactly! Only get what you really want. You'll appreciate it more. It will be a collection that represents what YOU really love.
Totally!
I have a CD player at home, and in my car.
I would not own a car that did not have a CD player.
I have nearly 300 CDs that I play all the time.
I own around 200 Blu-Rays and DVDs and have a few VHS tapes of rare stuff.
I'm not ever going to cease preferring physical media.
There you have it.
I get the movie stuff, but I cannot justify CD’s over Spotify. As you’re on the go with your music, I’d rather have 3000+ songs on my phone then bring 300 CDs in my car
@@BrandoCritic Obviously, I don't haul all 300 CDs into the car at once. I came from a generation where we didn't have phones with songs, so I get by just fine. Hell, my first car only had a cassette deck!
So did mine!
Old school is still the best school!
Haha put that on a tshirt
First time coming across your channel and must say you are a very very good presenter, clear consise intelligent points of view and make yourself very relatable to the movie collector out there.
Welcome aboard!
I never had enough money to buy films I don’t care about. Also, I never get a special version, just the regular dvd (maybe a bonus disc also if the price is about the same). So, I have about 100 films plus 20 or so series. Most of those I saw on tv back in the day. Hitchcock, Kubrick, Gilliam is quality that works for me year after year. Monty Python, The Prisoner, Golden Girls, Connery and Moore Bond films, Indiana Jones, Naked Gun Trilogy with Leslie Nielsen, Peter Jackson’s Braindead, The Ring, The Thing, Bladerunner, The Dark Knight with Heath Ledger as Joker… You just know when a film is THAT good. When you don’t need a cool package, when you don’t need extras. When the film just speaks to you as it is. That is when it deserves a place in my dvd shelf.
Thanks for sharing and watching ☺️👍🏻
Man, great discussion. Like you said I like having the video store in my home since they are all gone now.
Exactly!
I've heard people say the same thing about books and building PCs. Although they both came to peace with the idea in different ways.
The book collector recognized that collecting books was a hobby unto itself. That she also enjoyed along with the hobby of reading books. That it was ok to own books you'll never read.
The PC builder just admitted that his main hobby was building gaming PCs more than actually using them to play games. That's what he enjoyed doing.
I've discovered this about myself as well when it comes to movies and also cameras and other tech to some degree. I think it's just a matter of self realization and honesty. What is the thing that I really enjoy? You don't have to watch the movies you collect if that's not the thing you most love about collecting them. Sometimes the idea of the thing is stronger than the thing itself. Or the artwork, packaging, soundtrack, whatever. Or sometimes the way we view or use something is better than the way it's intended. Like when you mishear a lyric in a song and then discover the real lyric isn't as good. Or when the idea you have in your head of what a movie is, is better than the movie itself. Or when the story about the movie is better than the movie. I feel that way about El Mariachi.
But I think sometimes we get caught up in the idea that because we own a movie we have to watch it and enjoy it. When really we are enjoying it just by owning it. Or because we own a camera we have to shoot with it. Or a car, PC, book, you name it. So it really depends on what you actually value.
I own a laserdisc I'll never watch. Because I don't own a player. I knew that when I bought the disc. I just wanted the disc for the big artwork and to have a laserdisc since I wanted them as a kid but couldn't afford them back then, and because I own the movie on VHS and the soundtrack on cassette for some reason. It's an ok movie, but I don't love it and have only seen it once. But that's ok.
Thanks for the insight
Collect what you love and hold on to it. Nothing beats the quality of physical media. Nothing.
It’s very good indeed
I believe it is still worth it. You just have to be more strategic about purchases so you aren't overpaying for things.
Yep!
Another advantage of owning physical media is the ability to swap movies with friends or taking movies with you on vacation down to the lake.
Sure, but couldn't you watch it on streaming if you sign into your account at your friend's place or "down to the lake"?
Physical media = the ONLY way
But don’t you think there are ANY advantages to streaming?
I love streaming a series...but they always take off movies@@BrandoCritic
Yep. There are advantages and disadvantages to both
@@BrandoCritic For me personally? No.. I don't even bother with streaming services. Just use an antenna, and supplement OTA broadcasts w/ my own library
Got it
I regret getting rid of my physical media. I've started again, but only books, movies and music I actually love. I have a budget amount and spend no more than that per month. I'm really happy with it. And honesty, i don't care about the current best format or whatever. I just want the things I love available to me.
I'm glad you found a system that works for you!
To be honest, UA-cam collectors don’t make any sense to me as a movie collector. I have well over 1000 movies that I collect in the past 20 years. The thing is I don’t buy steel books or collectors edition. I just buy the standard edition of the movie and I also have to like the movie to purchase it. I very seldomly upgrade. I have about 400 DVDs 500 Blu-rays and about 1004K Blu-ray. I know this is gonna upset a lot of people, but I think steel books are dumb. You don’t watch the steel book you watch the movie. One final thing people that collect movies just for collecting them, but don’t like them have a mental issue with collecting.
That’s the practicality argument right there. Some people like to collect cool things that just sit on a shelf. An example would be the Funko pops
I’m guilty of it all also found myself in debt and overwhelmed! It’s like a drug addiction. It’s time to slow down. Our water heater broke flooded the entertainment room. Homeowners settlement got me out of debt. Now I must control my actions and it’s super HARD. But I will prevai.
That’s a crazy story!
I just wish physical media was easier to find at affordable prices. The prices continue to go through the roof and Walmart is doing such a lousy job at picking up the slack from Best Buy, Target and others.
Yep that’s true
Yes!!! You can't put a price on owning whatever music you want to listen to or movie you want to watch. Plus the fact that studios/labels **DON'T** want you to own a copy should tell you how important it is that you do.
Totally!
What factors into my decision when purchasing a movie is 1) rewatch ability and 2) if the movie is rare to find available on Netflix or other streaming services I’m subscribed to.
Totally! It’s a very practical approach
Got a VCR at Goodwill and found some cheap movies. I hooked it up to my old CRT that I pulled out of storage. Sure, the cropping is weird for some movies and the quality isn't as good, but it's a really good way to get movies I haven't seen or heard of or just want a copy of. It's cheap and fun. I have access to DVD and blu ray as well, but it's nice finding some hidden gems.
That sounds like a fun and CHEAP hobby
Physical media - books, movies, music - whatever will remain unaltered. All things digital is being altered, or deleted for one reason or another, it is happening left, right and center. With modern technology possibilities are endless.
That's a good point
The time part of hunting ignores the part that some (not me for discs) enjoy the search to find these items. It’s not a waste to them, it’s the activity they really enjoy.
I enjoy it too
It’s worth it imo. I don’t have too much disposable income so I don’t really care about upgrading formats and I can’t afford to anyway. Hell my family capped off at DVD so I wouldn’t know what the quality of blu ray and 4K discs are like. Also I’m a big fan of thrift stores. They let me pick out what I really want for cheaper instead of just what Walmart is putting on the shelf. They’re my first resort. If they don’t have it AND I can’t find one on eBay for a good price, then i go to Walmart. I love my dvd and vhs collections!
Also if someone doesn’t like physical media that’s fine! My parents just like having it all built into the TV. Heck my dad called having a shelf of DVDs when prime is already built into the tv retarded. I don’t give a rat’s ass what he thinks about MY stuff that I bought with MY money!
Haha looks like your dad is old school in some other ways though 😂
you are at an advantage because dvds are cheap and they are still making them for quite a bit of stuff. i'm not sure but i thought boutique labels have mostly gone to blu-ray now.
@@cubsfan-l9x well I’ve caved and I’m getting into Blu ray now since Warner Archive is putting out Wait Till Your Father Gets Home on Blu ray! That being said I’m sticking with DVD for the most part still!
for me its about Preservation of what you love, lets take the early seasons of The Simpsons for example, On DVD they are presented exactly at the resolution and quality intended at the time but On D+ they (in their not so great reasoning) decided to run the episodes through an AI upscaler which Nuked the picture quality..
this is why Physical media will always prevail, physical is free from the incompetence of future bad judgment calls or censorship
Thanks for the insight
Many of the tv shows aren’t on streaming, so I started looking for those shows. Found almost all of them.
Which shows?
Beauty and the Beast (with Ron Perlman in it), Dr. Kildare and Above and Beyond. Just to name a few.
Interesting!
I collect what I want, whether it's physical media or anything else. Nobody decides what's a waste of money for me.
Perhaps the bank might when you don't pay your mortgage haha
I dont stream or download anything. Physical only. Ever.
Got it
With streaming you're paying premium prices for access to stuff, with physical media it's more expensive per title obviously but you own them outright and can watch them for free forever. It's a no brainer for me
Thanks Matt!
You brought up a great point about buying and not watching. I feel guilty paying $30+ for something that at best may be viewed/played once. What started as a just getting physical media to support an artist for a movie or record that I enjoy turned into “hey the package design on that limited edition set would be really cool to have”. Fortunately or unfortunately I go through periods where I do not care at all about my collection and adding to it and then I get random urges to see what’s out there at the moment.
I get those urges too… but I always wait a day to see if I REALLY want it, or if it’s just an urge
Why would you buy something you are not going to watch to begin with? It’s a stupid point really! Out of all the movies & shows I own on DVD/Blu Ray, they are ones I ENJOY WATCHING!
Having a physical media collection becomes far less efficient when you move into a much smaller space. I find that when the disc is out of sight, it's pretty much out of mind. There are so many titles that I don't even remember if I still own or where I stored it. That's one of the key advantages of digital that not too many people bring up. Physical media is great if you have a lot of shelf space and a kick ass home theater system. My setup is not bad by any means, but it's not demo worthy, especially if you can't take advantage of the sound due to your living space.
If you're buying films to complete a collection, then that collection doesn't necessarily reflect your tastes, but rather your addiction. Luckily, I made this realization quite early.
I've migrated mostly to digital and wish more people would advocate for more consumer protections for digital purchases. Digital offers many of the same advantages as owning a disc. The act of ripping your own disc is not that different than stripping the DRM off of digital purchases using third party applications as both go against the TOS. Of course ripping can provide an identical copy whereas digital downloads are often a significant step down in quality, but they still rival DVD and even blu ray. I'm sure we would see more benefits to digital ownership if there were increased adoption. However, to physical media collectors, digital has become synonymous with subscription services which is unfortunate because I feel like there is a lot of potential for digital to serve the needs of independents who can't recoup physical distribution costs. I'd like to support a digital ecosystem that benefits more creators in addition to a format that encourages double or triple dipping.
I also wonder if discs themselves are as future proof as we're led to believe. Think of how most personal PCs have removed disc drives as a built in feature over the last several years. It's becoming a niche technology.
As I get older, I've started to prioritize the experience of going to the theater and watching films in the way they were truly meant to be seen. I've seen many first-run movies and classics in the theater, and no premium format can compare.
Thanks for the in-depth, insightful comment!
most of those so called collectors like midlevel don't buy their movies anymore. They get them sent to them for reviews for free. That is why most of those ratings for subpar movies are overrated so they can still collect free movies.
I used to get free physical media from studios too, and let me tell you, I would say some pretty bad things about certain movies… and they still sent movies
@@BrandoCritic amazing vidoe just to point out also that there are 26 films lol , including No Time To die. but the 2015 James Bond boxset is 25 films (Dr No 1962- Spectre 2015) So you would have to buy No Time To Die on its own.
There are 25 official films and two other unofficial films. That making the complete total number 27
Not entirely true. When Ken at Mid-level media was doing his audits he would say which ones he purchased and which were sent to him for free. He had a lot of freebies but the vast majority he still paid for. And he paid a LOT some months.
Totally… even when people get stuff for free… they don’t get EVERYTHING for free. Plus, that just means they have more money to spend on movies anyway 😂😂
On the BOB & TOM show today they were talking that since Teri Garr passed away, one of them wanted to rewatch YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN.
Currently, it isn't streaming anywhere and you can't rent it anywhere either.
That's why Physical Media is forever.
Got it
The biggest concern for any hardcore collector is the fear of a limited edition selling out and then forced to buy in the after market from eBay or Amazon sellers. My biggest weakness in any steelbook or boxset is the artwork. It's eye candy to me. You bring out many valid points in your video.
Thank you very much!
I curate my collection to buy only what I'll watch and most importantly, things I know I want to watch multiple times or annually. Containing good special features and extras is also vital when I purchase a film or boxset.
That's a good approach!
I prefer physical media I own DVD's
Awesome! How many do you own?
@@BrandoCritic not sure but a lot
Ball park… Over 500?
@@BrandoCritic I haven't counted
Just an estimate. For example, I have about 800 blurays
The costs of blu ray and 4k is why I collect dvds.
Gotcha
Pawnshop, thrifty stores that’s where I get most of my movies..1-2$ for dvd(BD-4k)..It’s not gonna be the latest movies but I’m totally fine with that..
Me too!
Yeah dude when I start my collection most of my movies were a dollar or two.
And then a few I spent $5.
And then generally when I upgrade to Blu-ray it was 5-8 dollar movies. Usually buy two get one free.
The place where I've really spent the money is upgrading movies to 4K but that's just for my all-time favorites.
And I've spent some money on boutique labels. At least most of those titles retain their value if I don't love the movie.
That’s how I built my collection too!
Some time ago, I was looking over my dvds and blu-rays and realized that I had acquired over 30 from my local thrift store, which seemed like a real money saver for me, and I'm very particular about condition, as I've passed up a lot of stuff over there. I'm not necessarily obsessed with owning a huge amount of physical media for space reasons, but I definitely enjoy claiming ownership of copies of entertainment I enjoy.
For sure! I had HUNDREDS of DVDs from our local flea market
I think having a special collection that is unique for you is key!
Absolutely! I’m almost there!
As a person with a physical disability, it is very difficult for me to stream, use an APP, or whatever everybody is doing today. I need physical media. Apart from the fact that sometimes I have to put physical media in cases or collection boxes that are more accessible for me (easier for me to use), physical media works for.
Physical Media is EASIER for someone with a disability?
I would've assumed that streaming or using an app would be easier than PM for a disabled person. What makes PM easier for you if you don't mind me asking?
I would assume that too, but that’s why I’m curious! No judgement I promise!
As a person with a physical disability, I can switch from season 1 episode 3 of The Office to season 9 episode 1 in less than a minute using Peacock. I can also watch it at a cafe on my iPad while on vacation in Europe.
Yes. Streaming is very convenient
I've always been collecting physical media since I was a kid, watching Disney movies on VHS. Later on DVD, then Bluray. I've collected each Dragon Ball series on either DVD or Bluray, all of Bleach on DVD (those bluray sets suck lol) got a shelf full of anime, a shelf full of movies, and my other shelf is for TV shows. (AKA cartoons/live action shows)
Also I've been making it a habit to finish off shows/movies that have had gaps in my collection. Like with Dragon Ball, I just needed to collect all the Super Bluray sets and its movies to count my collection as "complete" and I needed to grab the last few The Flash seasons on DVD to consider that series finished, as well.
Thanks for the insight
Physical media is always worth it because streaming subscriptions suck and need to go away already!!
Why do they suck and need to go away already?
@@BrandoCriticseriously?
This guy made a statement and I am simply asking why he thinks so
Right now I'm buying only movies that I now I'm going to rewatch. I realized it was the right thing to do when I kept renting the 007 movies over and over again from Prime 😅
Haha there you go!
I remember a time when we were told that high game prices are just because printing discs is expensive, and once we go digital, prices will drop. That never happened, though, the publishers just pocketed the money.
That’s capitalism. They charge you… because they can
@@BrandoCritic Socialists hardly managed to produce magnet tapes 😆
Okay
Yeah at least Apple movies often go on sale between $5-10. I can't believe some companies like Criterion Collection are charging $40 for a 4K Blu-ray, especially for obscure things people have never seen. I'd never pay that much on a blind buy. Maybe for a movie that I really like that I want a collector's edition of.
I liked the balanced perspective. I use streaming for some things and for other media I'm passionate about I collect.
That’s a good way to look at it!
All mine are on 2TB - 6TB hard drives, I have a massive collection of Movies, Anime, TV Shows, Cartoons from the 60's to today all in alphabetical order, I am more than happy with my set up.
Perfect! See, whatever works for you! Glad you have a system you love!
How do you get to save them on hard drives?
Probably by ripping them from disc or torrenting I’m assuming
That sounds great. But for me personally I want to have the special features and the packaging. Even if I went that route I still own at least a hundred or two movies of physically..
There's certain movies like Conan or road warrior that I have to have a physical copy of. As long as it exists.
Road Warrior! Good movie!
I am now getting through my backlog of unwatched movies by the 3:1 ratio method
Watch 3 movies before buying 1 new one
That’s a good method!
I can’t look at my whole collection. Because it crosses three rooms.😅
Haha that’s a collection I tell ya
A great aunt I had as a kid and ‘inspired’ my collecting had a vhs collection so big they were in drawers all over her house
Haha that's awesome!
The thrill of the hunt is definitely a major aspect of collecting for me. Nothing quite like stumbling upon a rare Blu-ray copy
It’s not owning it that’s fun, it’s buying it
I gave up physical media for two main reasons. One, space. If you build up even a half way decent collection then it's going to require space. I'd rather use that space for something else. Secondly, convenience. When I want to watch something, I want to start watching it immediately. I don't want to have to go through a menu, FBI warnings, or any of that kind of stuff.
All valid points!
It's also a fairly expensive hobby. Streaming is significantly cheaper. And if you don't have a player, you have a coaster collection.
Totally! The exact first point I mention in the video
Laserdisc is the perfect format for you, no unskippable warning screens, no previews, no before movie features. You hit play and the movie begins.
And the packaging can’t be beat! I have a few and I LOVE them
Very nice video!, and you are totally right with getting rid of a movie you dont like and never watch… that’s how you will eliminate part of the money issue of the hobby and the completionist mindset…. We all collectors have being there
Totally my dude!
I am fortunate that I have always been the type of person to watch movies multiple times. And I immediately know after a first viewing if a film connects with me and if I care about it. So I have always only purchased movies that mean something to me. This means my collection is not that large. But to me it is wonderful knowing that I have no fluff. And yes there are films I own that I have not watched in years. But I know that I will. It is especially great when I can share them with my kids. And see them connect with them for the first time the way I did.
Awesome!!
Physical media because it will always be mine! Just like all the cassette,VHS and vinyl albums i have had for years! ITS MINE FOREVER!
Haha yep you’re right
Physical copy will always be the choice. Only one reason for me. “Has better QUALITY AUDIO.” I watch movies on my home theater and there is a difference in AUDIO from Digital to Physical.
Very nice!
Great video Brandon, it’s a cool topic and many of your points I share as well! 👍
Awesome, thank you! Glad you enjoyed it
For me the key is keeping the collection small and always buying cheap and on sale. I mostly have dvds but a few in blu ray. As long as i can watch it and it had the bonus extras im happy. I cant do special editions or 4k as thats too rich for my blood haha. But if its on sale or someone has it for the low on ebay i will dip my toes in. Definitely sell if the i didnt like it or if worth some money
That’s a good method
Having both would be awesome. And have a physical copy for special editions.
I know what you mean, the best of both worlds!
I think I like only buying what I need, like only collecting the things I really care about vs deals&or to "build" a collection. I have about 15 movies and a few shows but I love every one
That’s awesome!
My friend, I understand where you’re coming from but I only get certain ones in my just started collecting 4K’s this year and replacing a lot of my movies on blue from Blu-ray 4K from DVD two as well so I know where you come from I only replacing the ones that are out nowand only going to buy 17 extra ones and only the ones and only the new stuff that I like to add onto the clutch and the old stuff that I have to replace some blue DVD so I have a limit I can control it. I don’t need every special edition. Have a great day. Keep the good work up
That’s a great strategy! Thank you!
Raiders of the Lost Ark is my most double-dipped.
Unpopular opinion: I don’t mind double-dipping. Most new releases omit special features from older versions, despite the awesome visual/audio upgrades. It’s cool to have everything you need to know about your favorite films on those discs.
Yeah I can understand that
I only buy stuff I’ll rewatch at least 3 times. Might pick up a digital copy if it’s only 1 or 2 times. I’ll rent from the library if I just want to watch it once.
These rules have saved me a lot of time and space.
I like those rules
I only double dipped once, First, I got the Back to the Future trilogy on DVD. Then, when I started collecting Blu-rays, i got the 30th anniversary collection on the Blu-ray. When the ultimate trilogy came out I got the Target version of it. So now, I have 3 editions of the Back to the Future trilogy. But I don't regret it.
Right on! That’s awesome!
Buying physical media: You support the artists directly, allowing small budget producers to survive.
Buying subsciption services: You fund Ted, Greg and Bob's private jets. ✈️
Choose wisely!
Haha totally
No one should rely on a streaming service for their films. Netflix, Prime, Paramount+, etc can drop a movie quickly.
I buy all my digital movies on either Fandango at Home or Apple. These movies won't be taken away on a whim like the others. You keep your library and won't lose any films.
I think they can take those away too...
the best way I've hear it all explained!!!
Thank you!!
Going out of your way to **collect** media shows it's deminishing returns almost instantly. It's either a hobby or a want to have specific versions of specific movies. I often tell people that they should make sure to get all of their favorite movies on blu ray and/or 4k uhd, but not to outright collect unless they really want to. Only other way I could see physical being cheaper than streaming is if you only watch a movie once or twice a month. In that case, you could just go to the pawn shop every once and a while and pick up a blu ray or 2 for around 3 bucks a piece. Save a lotta money. Fun stuff!
Thanks for the insight buddy
@BrandoCritic It's what I figure anyways lol
Absolutely. When I purchase physical media it's mine. I have it in my possession. To watch or play it whenever I want to. I'm not reliant on whatever streaming service is providing it to maintain its license to distribute it. How often do movies /
TV shows leave Amazon, Netflix, etc.? Additionally, the physical copy doesn't change with the vagaries of society that will necessitate changing dialogue, cutting scenes from movies provided by a streaming service. I've got the movie I want. No one can change it.
Yep! That’s right
It took me until time mark 6:54 to realize that this was not aimed at my generation.
I found the perspective, and the comment section quite fun, and interesting.
What’s now called “physical media” (6 syllables) is what was throwing me off.. It’s a lot of vocalization to describe something that was pretty basic, and for granted for us..
Examples:
Record, (two syllables)
tape (one)
DVD (three)
CD (two)
We grew up with touching, owning and experiencing those things just as our parents’ parents and their parents in the mid to late 1800’s..
I was amazed when I realized that it’s now a collector thing vs. having a film in the house because we had a home theater. Movie hits theaters, a couple months later you can own it.
Wait a year or so for our fav artist to release an album, tape and cd, and simply go buy it.
Clearly I must be sitting on a small fortune since I inherited my dad’s vinyl collection, which includes my grandfather’s, which are 100yrs old and change..
I thank you for the insight
I grew up in this time too, but I am aware of the culture shift
Are you buying things new? I get what youre saying about the double dipping thing, but I buy almost everything used and stay away from big ticket stuff unless there is nowhere else to get said item, which is almost never the case. I shop charity shops and get things for a buck and Ive been doing this for years and have a pretty substantial collection. If it makes you happy, no harm no foul, to each their own.
I buy things used. I’m just saying in a general sense as there are people who buy things new
I just started collecting, and i set parameters, and that helps. I made a list of the top 100 films i love and want to own first. And i set a limit on how much i get and when. As far as new films that i just came out that i love, i try to limit it to a new 4K once every three months, for right now
That's a good way to go about it
Thank you for your video, I enjoyed it and are agreeing with alot. Regarding torrenting movies, it's the same with the music industry. Many bands don't mind if people are file sharing their music, and for pretty much the same reasons you are mentioning here regarding movies. I have explored and supported many many bands economically throughout the years thanks to file sharing.
I am currently "double dipping" though... I am updating some of my DVD's to bluray now. In the beginning of my movie collecting career I thought I didn't "need" to do that. But now I do.
I don't keep the DVD's I've found on bluray though, I give it away to second hand stores which in the end goes to charity.
Happy collecting everyone!
Totally! Thanks for the comment!
I find myself getting rid of later sequels to a movie. Like transformers. But for me it's the original Jurassic Park trilogy I knocked out the 4, 5 and 6 and just have the first 3 movies because those ones were my childhood and even the saw movies I like the first 7 movies but not the newest entries. It's kinda like retconing but for myself
Haha for sure
I only buy DVDs of the movies I enjoy when I find them on the second-hand market. I treasure hunt for them as I only watch on a borderline vintage portable player when I'm extra bored. My collection is small, but I plan on keeping them long-term.
Awesome!
Used to have a 4k movie collection but now I've transitioned back to cds. Like the films I had, I have a small cd collection of only albums I can repeatedly listen to that I'm passionate about. Love physical media.
That’s awesome!
Depends what it is, do your research and get what you actually want. It may take time but that's a hobby, just make sure it's fun!
Totally agree!
I just bought some used movies from the library, so while money from the purchase might not have gone to the creators, it went to the library so I think that's still a benefit
Of course
I love the tip of getting rid of the bad ones out of a franchise... I also used to collect every movie from a franchise. Hence I own The Predator, a movie I absolutely loathe... I need to get rid of it asap.
Yeah, it’s a good way to look at it
This is why most of my DVD collection is standard DVD with some Blu-ray. I can pick up used DVDs for $1-$3. It allows me to have a larger collection at a cheaper price. Sure the picture quality isn't as good but the standard definition is good enough for me. I just like having the movie. So keep upgrading your movies and I will keep buying them up on the cheap. And yes I used to be a laser disc collector so I know how obsessing over your collection can be. I'm passed that now. 😊
Yeah that’s awesome!
I went on a physical media spending binge last year. Gobbled up like 200 horror movies. While I'm happy to have them, the reality of cost and space became apparent. I could have gotten the majority of these movies on digital either for free or very low cost. And I quickly ran out of space for the discs.
While I know that physical media has superior PQ and sound, the trade off was the things I mentioned above. I ended up selling about 50 of the 200 discs. I wish I had done more research into the quality of some of those old horror movies!
Totally valid points!
I've only accidentally double dipped, buying a movie I forgot I already owned. These days I'll only buy an upgrade, and thus double dip, if the disc no longer works, such as the dreaded DVD "rot" from movies I bought 20 years ago. I watched Pirates of the Caribbean on my original purchase DVD the other night, and was happy with the quality etc, so no need to upgrade. The only special editions I ever purchased were the original expanded release LoTR DVDs, that came with figurines. Those figurines are still proudly on display in my lounge room, over 20 years later :)
I’m glad you still have your original DVD!
Digital films are the future.
I think so...
Well said sir... well said! 🌟🤟
Thank you!!!
The one I’ve probably spent the most on over the course of my life is Night of the Living Dead. I had numerous VHS tapes with various covers in multiple editions. Same case with the dvd, including the infamous “special edition “. Then of course the Blu Ray and 4K UHD. And also consider the various multi packs that include the movie. The kicker is that the movie is in public domain!
Gotcha! Good movie though 👍🏻
The reason I started collecting honestly: there was an anime I couldn't watch on any streaming platforms. I got to watch it but I had to paid $100. It was out of print, it's still out of print now. I have the insurance that I'll always have access to it.
Absolutely!
That's a great message to All those Crazy Movie Collectors ! 😅 I only buy movies I like , I'm Cheap I Know , ..I don't Double Dip , Cost Too Much Money and Takes Up Space !;;
I’m with you!
100% it is, nothing will top having something tangible in your hand especially if it's something you love. Streaming is just becoming more frustrating and expensive by the day
Thanks
Internet wasn't working for over a week, still needs work
Haha worked enough to send this comment? Kidding of course
If you like the film enough to pay for a physical copy, well,it must be worth it.But so far I like some of the questions you're asking!
Thanks
I hear you about being a completist. I recently purchased the blu-ray of Star Trek TNG. I have all 7 seasons and I didn't think the first two seasons were that great, some episodes were horrible, but since I wanted all the seasons, I bought them and I watched all of them.
Gotcha!
Well said-Great video!
I'm glad you liked it!
