KD is Kraft Dinner, and Canadian. The American Kraft mac n cheese both looks (the box) and taste very different, and it most certainly does not lack salt.

I'm glad you shared this. I was thinking, "KD? When the heck did they change their branding to KD?" Kraft Mac & Cheese was invented in the US, and I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that our version is less healthful, but also more flavorful. My favorite is the Spirals. I don't like any of the chunky shape ones, because they're bulky and don't cook evenly. And I don't really care if I sound like a boxed mac & cheese enthusiast. A rose by any other name....

As someone who grew up in household which most meals came from a box or a can, mac and cheese was a pretty solid staple dinner. We often mixed it with peas and then a protein such as hot dogs or chicken. While definitely not the best, at least it fed us.

As a child my mother would make mac and cheese with a pound of ground beef and a whole white onion. That concoction would feed a family for a meal. It was an evening's supper meal. Not every night, but more than not. Funny that as an adult, I don't eat it at all because of the powdery cheese sauce. There's a lot of ingredients in that powdery magic.

Remember, these are made to appeal to kids. A child's taste buds interpret flavors more intensely than an adult. So, the flavors are toned down. American adults like them because they remember loving them as kids.
My mom used to keep these in the cabinet just in case she needed something quick to fix. You can improve the flavor by adding shredded cheese or bacon bits. But it's never going to taste like the real mac and cheese that Mom made when she was not in a rush.
Also, as an adult who sometimes ate these as a kid, they do taste better now after you've had a drink or five.

Ramen became popular in the US in the late 70's. Prior to that Kraft "Blue Box" Macaroni & Cheese (and even cheaper generic brands) were the poor college students' choice of quick carbs. Often supplemented with cut-up hot dogs, or a can of tuna. In Canada, it was originally sold as Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, but popularly referred to as "Kraft Dinner", leading Kraft to change the name.

The trick to making KD taste "better" is to cook for only 3 minutes (al dente). Use a lot of butter when it's hot, immediately after straining. Then use cream sparingly after adding the mix. Stir until it looks like a thick sauce. Serve instantly. Let it sit too long and the noodles soak up the moisture. Adding fresh ground pepper helps. Serve with a side of ice-cold milk. It's not Nonna's pasta, but it does in a pinch.

The way to get the mac better is to add more butter than it asks for. It makes it cheesier and not as dry. I've always thought of the cooking instructions on the box as more of a suggestion! You need twice the butter, half the milk and then add in a good-sized handful of grated cheese. It also needs a decent amount of pepper (but no salt cos it's already salty af!). If you're feeling fancy, you can add herbs - chives or tarragon or dill are all excellent choices - as well as leftover roast chicken or frozen veg. It was a staple in our house growing up, usually with hot dogs, and is excellent hangover food :D

    • @vysharra
      @vysharra Рік тому +7

When I was a kid, my mom used the recommended butter but sour cream instead of milk to reduce the liquid but up the fat (this was during the 90s in America, so the reduced fat milk craze made it even more necessary). It was ever so slightly tangy and with peas and tuna made a kid-friendly mid-week meal out of the cupboard, especially when crushed ritz or goldfish crackers were quickly baked on top. As an adult, I prefer it plain so I make it like a college friend showed me: equal parts butter and heavy whipping cream (less chance of being out of milk or it being off, great ingredient for college students with roommates), a splash of pasta water if required, and a squeeze of ketchup on the side of the bowl. If I’m serving friends or feeling fancy, I’ll fry up hot dogs or spam to make it more filling.
KD is like meatloaf or instant ramen: your nostalgia or personal tastes informs a very specific recipe in each household. I’m going to try adding herbs and extra cheese next time, thanks for the idea!

Okay, so I'm a middle aged mother who grew up on Kraft Mac and cheese. There's a trick to the perfect Mac imo. So, when you go to station the noodles, leave the burner on. Put the pan on the burner and add 2 1/2 tablespoon butter. Once it begins to melt, turn off/take the pan of the burner. Add the noodles to the butter, melting the rest of it as you stir. Then add the cheese, and stir it in the buttery noodles. It will be clumpy, but trust me. After that, at 1/4 cup of milk; just enough to coat the bottom of the pan. Stir that all together well. Add salt and pepper to taste. It's a creamy smooth cheap mac and cheese, and my kid lives for it. Love your channel as an American, I think you are all amazing and I love you so much. Sending love from the Arizona desert

These are the Canadian flavors, I've not seen these in the US. I would at least try the Alfredo one. This stuff is good if you don't have much money, but if you have a few more dollars you can add things to them like chopped ham, hot dogs, tuna, and different veggies. Stretches that food dollar for sure. These use a dry packet of cheese seasoning - at least the US version does. If I'm doing a retro boxed and cheese - sometimes I crave it, I admit it - then I get the Deluxe version, which has a more liquid cheese sauce in a pouch. There used to be a recipe on that package to fancy it up with sour cream and more cheese, I think, but I've forgotten that and don't have any on hand to check. Loved the video and finding out about the varieties Canadians are NOT sharing with us.

KD is a Canadian university, food staple. Traditionaly eaten plain but some radicals, put ketchup on theirs. If you are an adventurous type, boil three hot dogs then make the KD in the hot dog water. Make sure to cut the hot dogs in 2.5cm pieces before introducing them back into the pot of KD. You can cut the dogs diagonally if you want to be fancy as fook. Another good meal is to make the KD and at the end, mix in a can of tuna. Garnish the top with crushed salt and vinegar, potato crisps. Bon appatite!

These are definitely Canadian. The classic add-ins to KD I've seen are cut up hotdogs, ketchup, and/or hot sauce. My mother is English so this stuff was practically banned in my household when I was a kid (possibly because i has vague amounts of flavour?). I quite liked it with ketchup, oddly. Can't touch the stuff these days, but I have a lot of friends that still include KD in their list of comfort foods.

These boxes are all about enhancement. Its the basic, what you add to it makes it a meal. I like adding grated cheese( spicy jack or sharp cheddar} and bacon. Also, using seasoned salts{ Lawrys or a lemon pepper} also enhances it favorably.

When explaining Mac and Cheese to my non American friends, their sticking point is, “wait, there’s how much butter in it?!”

In my experience only small kids were served it straight plain. We always added a can of peas, peas\carrots, peas\pearl onions, peas\mushrooms and some type of meat like hot dogs, sausage, chicken or tuna. That's what we did anyway.

25 Celsius is 77 Fahrenheit, that's not hot at all, quite pleasant. Did she mean 35?

Friendly reminder that Ireland and some European countries are not built for hotter temperatures, no air con in houses/apartments etc so what might be bearable over there is not bearable here! 😅

@@ColinFilm I get that, and the humidity as well. When it comes to weather in the 70s though I would never use an air conditioner, let alone think it was even close to hot. I mean that's the perfect mid day temperature.
