A more recent reference to the smell of the wet earth was in the page titled "II - The Whispering Dark" of the Above All Else lore book released in Season of Plunder. Inaaks, Mithrax's mother, and her pirate crew ventures to the Lunar Pyramid and encounters the creatures stinking of wet soil. She experienced the Whirlwind at the hands of the Oryx and the Black Fleet, there is no way she doesn't know what the Taken or the Hive are. I love how when the guardian, who was most likely a titan, punched the artifact casing, Rasputin basically sent a high speed cease and disist from orbit
Something to note about Hakke. Out of all the traditional foundries, they have the most stasis weapons. And their origin trait is the only one to have an effect on stasis verbs. Probably a coincidence but….
Hakke only started making stasis weapons around the same time as the rest of the big foundries (i.e, start of WQ), but they notably were more eager to make a bunch. Herod-C, Perses-D, etc.
It was also a former hakke engineer who built the hoarfrost z titan exotic, which if I'm remembering the lore tab correctly, allowed him, a non-lightbearer, to render a hive ghost motionless, most likely with stasis based on what the exotic actually does in game. Also, in season of the chosen, the psions built their light suppressing devices using stolen remnants of ghaul's traveler cage that they stole from a hakke warehouse. Why hakke would have this technology is unclear, but it seems that since before the collapse, the company has been skeptical about the traveler and lightbearers, and possibly more willing to embrace darkness than other foundries. It might be a long shot but it would be cool to have a plotline about hakke personnel/civilians, now mistrustful of the traveler, ghosts and guardians (mainly due to the lucent hive's existence) using stasis and light suppressing technology to rebel against the vanguard and its guardians
I think that the creatures talked about in the black armory papers are the same the drifter found on that planet and are in fact the tormentors that we see in ligthfall.
Was just thinking about this! Hopefully we'll hear that machine stretching sound when the Tormentors move. Because that will be horrifying to hear in game
The design on the mag kinda resembles some of the wall designs in the Bray facilities on Europa, namely Creation and Perdition, especially when compared against the Witness and Upended iterations. I would also guess that the familiar, unnerving frequency Fenchurch mentioned would have something to do with the pyramid tech he encountered on Luna that he found in a single, strange thrall that was politely waiting outside his door.
The most disturbing part of this is honesty that the hidden can hack any Guardian's ghosts at will, and then can both see and *smell* through them. Not quite sure why I needed to do all that stuff in season of the Drifter, but here we are.
what about the part of everyone that isnt there in person, is talking through our ghost for years? i mean ,it explains why the ghost symbol always shows up at the top right every time there talking "over radio"
To me that always felt like we set up comms and went on a mission, during which we could hear the people on our Comm channel. This felt more like we got a phone call from a guy who casually started talking to us about what we were just doing inside our own home.
@@Crushanator1 Maybe so, then again a digital system like our ghost would be able to receive a signal, process it, and decide to just let it through in a heartbeat. If he wanted to I think he could've blocked his signal, but we are familiar with the hidden. So why block the signal from one?
It almost hurt hearing Eramis talking at the end of the mission. She sounded so defeated in giving the dialogue to us that she was probably forced to say.

Not sure if anyone noticed but during the seraph station mission in one of the locked rooms needing an operator buff, there is actually a darkness artifact, the same one we were given on the pyramid ship on luna. It's a ball.

The mentions of this creature smelling of wet rot and emitting sounds of seemingly mechanical origin, my mind goes to 2 places. The more unlikely one is the Vex, specifically the ones from the black garden - they're covered in moss and the noises some of them make sound a lot like the description. The Vex were known to make a one or a few frames designed specifically for war, perhaps they have another they're keeping particularly hidden. The other more likely possibility imo are the tormentors shown in Lightfall, they seem to be made from the same resonance stuff we see in VotD, specifically that wierd thing on top of the barge we escort at the start.
the way I figured it, with the darkness logos on the magazines of the weapon and the references to synthesizing materials from K1 mean that this gun was a golden age prototype attempt to reverse engineer the materials that make up the pyramid ship. sort of XCOM style, they obviously immediately decided to integrate it into a weapons platform.
7:59 the power that Rhulk bears can be described like a machine that stretches and compresses, even the yellow portals sound like metal. Horrific creatures that stank of wet soil, shrieked like dying animals, and tore at flesh.”
Something that I only realized after watching the Video: The Triumph for claiming Veles-X is called Production Model. And since both guns are Häkke pulse rifles with 4-round bursts, it is implied that Veles-X is a mass-produced - and most likely somewhat stripped down - Version of Revision Zero
I would also like to note, if no has realized it yet, is that the quest around the pulse rifle has references to the Lord of the Rings. Keep it secret, keep it safe, is what Gandalf told Frodo about the One Ring before he leaves to research more about the artifact.
I thought the line about "not wholly synthetic" refers to non-artificial materials like raw metals and minerals. (HHI = Hakke Heavy Industrial?) So, the line about Synthweave suddenly ties this back to the initial quest we did in Season of the Splicer to help Ada-1 set up her new threader system.

Before going and watching the video, one thing that really interests me is how the Foundry Label in the weapon screen and the loretab confirmed that Hakke is actually a company from the Golden Age.

It still gets a kick out of me that we hold crucible matches in the vicinity of the anomaly without any concern of damaging the containment of the relic, nor has anyone gone insane from the countless hours we've spent within it's vicinity. It's just kinda there and we treat it like it's a cool piece of cover to hide behind in our sporting games.
I'm wondering if the enemy they were fighting in the lore tab from black armory was a tormentor, given the fact that it's of the darkness, extremely powerful and we don't exactly know what our enemies smell like.
Not related to the story, but I realize this Season is referencing to two games. One during a heist, Ana Bray's line mirrored to Lotus. 'Operator, patch me into that console' then we got, 'Would you kindly' from Ryan. This is pretty cool I'll say! Tid bit references kinda shows Bungie's awareness of other games with familiar lines.

The word "petrichor" reminded me of the Dr Who episode written by Neil Gaiman that turned around its meaning. It'd be a stretch to imagine they're nodding in that direction, but it's an unusual enough word that this popped to mind.
It makes me wonder if the symbols on the Re: Zero and the Upended are Idiograms, symbols made up of smaller symbols that represent ideas to convey a certain sentence or other idea
Rasputin: dont touch the anomaly Guardians: lets hold crucible matches here. Im sure the anomaly wont be accidentally punched, shot, hit with munitions, etc...
Solid mission and so far solid exotic, very curious to see it "grow" Loving the two burst of the pulse rifle half and the sniper half might make me appreciate snipers in general (tho I'm still sticking to Glaives for special weapon)
Petrichor is the smell of "first rain". it's caused by plant oils absorbed by the soil that are released by the water, along with geosmin (a compound produced by blue-green algae, some bacteria, and a few fungi), and sometimes ozone.

Rasputin: Sends a warsat to kill the guardian. “Don’t you dare f****ing do that again.”
I would also like to note, if no has realized it yet, is that the quest around the pulse rifle has references to the Lord of the Rings.
Keep it secret, keep it safe, is what Gandalf told Frodo about the One Ring before he leaves to research more about the artifact.
It's also the same quote that Bungie uses to keep weapons/armour hidden in the API until it's properly ready to reveal them
The catalyst quests are named "Should You Choose To Accept It" which is a reference to the James Bond films.
@@ShaoShaoMienshao that's mission impossible actually
I thought the line about "not wholly synthetic" refers to non-artificial materials like raw metals and minerals.
(HHI = Hakke Heavy Industrial?) So, the line about Synthweave suddenly ties this back to the initial quest we did in Season of the Splicer to help Ada-1 set up her new threader system.
The end logs back-and-forth between the clothes frames Lee seem to be from the beginning of the collapse, system wide collapse and all.
These recent lore entries from the verge of The Collapse are reinforcing my though that this would be a great time period to have a TV series
I'd rather have a prequel game that's not an MMO but rather a single player/coop story game
@@fuckinantipope5511 i'd take a VR-optional cayde single player game as well
@@fuckinantipope5511 destiny needs to capitalise on all these opportunities, spin off single player games or hell maybe ingame campaigns like expiditions in no mans sky. TV shows, movies, etc
If you have played bioshock the "would you kindly" line might give you the chills
Aw man, you mean we're still getting way MORE than our share of stuff from the story this season from you. Thanks Byf!
What if its the Tormentors, coming in Lightfall that were being hinted at back in the Black Armory lore tab?
they seem to be physically similar to the Witness and other darkness items, maybe they smell like wet earth?
Before going and watching the video, one thing that really interests me is how the Foundry Label in the weapon screen and the loretab confirmed that Hakke is actually a company from the Golden Age.
That's what floored me when I read the lore tab. And it's crazy that they partnered with braytech to make a weapon
I kinda think Häkke is the Destiny universes version of german gun manufacturer Heckler & Koch. Häkke SMGs share similarities with the MP7 and their auto rifles look a lot like HK416s
Fenchurch got those Gandalf vibes.
“Keep it secret. Keep it safe!”
The idea of Rasputin dropping war sats on guardians just to send a message is so funny
Thank you byf and Editor for making great content weekly
I think Byf might be the only youtuber I have legitimately watched every single video he has ever posted to his channel.
Bro this weapon took so long to grind for but it was worth it because now I get to learn about the lore behind it
You gave me most of my lore knowledge
Thank you byf
Oh my god the thing that attacked the black armory was totally a Tormentor wasnt it? It fits all the criteria.
Are we gonna talk about that yellow bar in the mission called “tormentor of the helium drinkers”?
That dude should be literally among the first batch of Krill who took the Worm larvae in their bodies. Similar in age to the Osmium Sisters.
@@waamintion5653 yeah my thoughts exactly i love this mission
@@byranwitherspoon5369 I, a 35 year-old man, literally squealed with joy like a teenage girl when I saw that Hive mini-boss. I'm a massive Hive lore fan. Oh, by the way, it was "Scourge of the Helium Drinkers" to be exact. And his Chitin was different than any other Hive. And he had (I think) Eliksni markings on that cloak he was wearing.

@@IRObot2113 thx for the clarification lol i got excited as well lol
I KNEW THE MAGAZINE PATTERN LOOKED LIKE SOMETHING FROM VOW OF THE DISCIPLE
i rlly like the new camera view for the description of the hidden FEN-092 message, looks rlly cool
I was somewhat hoping for an Exotic Warmind themed Glaive, something with abilities similar to Rasputin’s Javelin. Though the new, aggressive one we got is still pretty good, and the other exotic weapons we can obtain this season. I just hope seasonal red border weapons will still be available to obtain after Lightfall arrives, as I don’t have all the seasonal weapons unlocked for creating.
I managed to get the solo flawless triumph on my first run of this and my god it is such an awesome mission. I much prefer the puzzle solving compared to the ad clearing. My favorite part was for sure the pressure plate room.
I have a feeling that when we next see Taniks he's gonna be scorn and well as memey as he is he doesn't deserve that fait
No Eliksni does
watch him come back as a scorn and then create his own throne world like the mindbender and then he’ll commune with the deep and learn the power to take. Taniks will be the final shape.
@Owen G as cool as that would be
Most scorn are mindless Zombies and taniks may be strong but once you become a scorn it's like you loose everything you once were afterall look what's been happening to House Salvation
I don't think Taniks can come back as scorn because he turned into an Exo
@FuckinAntiPope
True maybe not that Taniks
But what about the Actual Taniks aka the original body
@@osiristextingstories2006 scaning the brain to turn them into an Exo completely fries the brain and kills the original body.
I would guess that even minor scorn still need their brain to function to an extend so that they body can move.
When i saw the symbol on the magazine, i immediately thought of the spinning tower things that the cabal keep jamming in the Witch Queen mission on Europa's pyramid
Should have had Myelin read the Fenchurch message in the most flamboyant Auss accent ever
the bit about it being polyphasic reminds me of heartshadow and how it’s shape could be changed by the wielder
The synthweave reference is really interesting ngl
Oh man that last logline in the weapon lore card... The beginning of the end
Tormentors definitely sounding like the "Wet Earth smelling" monsters
"Would you kindly" haven't heard that one in a while
In the end of that lore tab seems like collapse has just begun
10:11 The magazine of revision zero looks like the spinning darkness things that the cabal were suppressing in the pyramid in the WQ Europa mission
I heard Fen and I was like:
“wait, like Fenchurch? No, what am I saying.”
And then I heard Byf say Fenchurch and I nearly fell back in my chair. I guess I’m a lore nerd now.
Another note on the K1 Artifact is that it is theorized to be able to initiate a vacuum decay
Something about being refreshed on Clovis communing with the witness makes me think all the times where he is ignorant of hive magic and their technologies being preposterous is acting, in an attempt to get us to undermind his understanding of the situation we are in, he could be a sleeper agent for sure lol
The word "petrichor" reminded me of the Dr Who episode written by Neil Gaiman that turned around its meaning. It'd be a stretch to imagine they're nodding in that direction, but it's an unusual enough word that this popped to mind.
Keep Up The Great Work!!!
I don't play it anymore, but I do still always watch your videos to keep up with the story and lore :)
It makes me wonder if the symbols on the Re: Zero and the Upended are Idiograms, symbols made up of smaller symbols that represent ideas to convey a certain sentence or other idea
Rasputin: dont touch the anomaly
Guardians: lets hold crucible matches here. Im sure the anomaly wont be accidentally punched, shot, hit with munitions, etc...
(Me as a hunter) when BYF releases a lore video I start a campfire and sit in the woods and listen
Petition to have Byf be the official destiny 2 lore narrator and become a member of the bungie story team
“Please don’t punch it, don’t touch it, don’t mess with it, it is far more important than you realize” when I heard this I was laughing out loud
Solid mission and so far solid exotic, very curious to see it "grow"
Loving the two burst of the pulse rifle half and the sniper half might make me appreciate snipers in general (tho I'm still sticking to Glaives for special weapon)
Just loving the lore. How long have we waited for details of the collapse
Petrichor is the smell of "first rain".
it's caused by plant oils absorbed by the soil that are released by the water, along with geosmin (a compound produced by blue-green algae, some bacteria, and a few fungi), and sometimes ozone.
Between the gear lore from the Duality dungeon and this exotic, the Häkke foundry is playing with fire with their recent escapades into the darkness.
Omg I just realised, the black armoury people were probably attacked by a Tormenter (the new darkness entity announced in the Lightfall trailer).
Imagine if one of the number sequences in the Lore Tab was someone’s activation code and Byf has to explain to the feds that he’s not a spy
As soon as I heard Fen I knew exactly who it was. Massive W
I’m interested to see where he takes this, especially his interpretation regarding “wet earth” in Banshee’s last text during this quest line.
Byf knows how to start a video, with a beautiful skybox that bungie created.
I am always suspicious of people asking me: "Would you kindly...."
Rasputin: DO NOT TOUCH THE BALL
This season is packed with lore!!!! I love it 😀
