There's really no excuse for this lack of representation. Queer relationships, at the core of them, are the exact same as hetero relationships. The love, the care the way they behave as a couple, even the lust. It's just their gender identity that are different. In fantasy you can even have an advantage by changing the society so these relationships are accepted, so that way even if the author isn't queer they can still write the relationships without the baggage and hardships of the reality of our society attached.

@@treceslez Not to mention how he sends her into the witch's house with LITERALLY no backup to 'prove herself' - this wasn't teaching her self defense, it was LITERALLY testing whether she was good enough for him! And it's scary to think that if Feyre had 'failed' he would have just let her die. Because there's no scene later where he tells her 'I was keeping an eye out and would have come to help if you had needed me.' Polar opposite from Cardan in The Cruel Prince, when he tells Jude he would never have let the nixies get to her in the river scene earlier (which astute readers had already figured out.) It gets me because I write these kinds of situations all the time; only my heroines are tough stubborn girls who are constantly trying to prove themselves and show 0 vulnerability because they've been hurt in the past. So they keep getting sent on dangerous missions because my hero knows she'll get the job done and not complain and he trusts her even though she doesn't trust ANYONE. Then she gets herself hurt and the hero feels guilty he didn't help more and there's a conversation where he tells her he won't think any less of her if she needs help and she can trust him to have her back, which builds their relationship, voila. Cheesy, I guess, but I think it's important not to prioritize being 'able to take care of yourself' over 'having each others' backs.'

ok but fae in this world kept humans as slaves so it makes sense why nesta and elain don't want to be part of the fae
Well, it's because:
A.) It was forced upon them.
B.) The sisters only knew fae as monstrous, human-eating slavers. So they thought they would become that.
C.) They now have powers they cannot control nor do they understand them.
D.) They have to deal with Ricesand and his groupie so.
As a bisexual woman who has come out to her family three different times let me say this: stop writing coming-out scenes as these big dramatic speeches because usually when we come out, it is to people we trust and usually it comes down to one sentence:
"I'm [insert lgbtq+ identity here]. I wanted to let you know because you're my family and I trust you". Them's the deets.
Also the fact that the lesbian coming out scene that was written was somehow only there because of a man is so laughable, I can't.
My closest friend sent me a video that another UA-camr made to help people say they're coming out. Happened 6yrs ago. She (she uses she/them pronouns) had been terrified that I wouldn't want to be friends with her anymore if I knew and my response was to first reassure her that I don't hate her and never would and that it was kinda obvious with how she had been with one specific friend of ours. That friend doesn't know about this to date but yeah 6yrs down the line she's still one of my closest friends and I'll always be there for her.
Gosh, I also came out three-four times, because the first time my mom didn't take it good and thought it was everything about my dad's economic problems (now she denies this happening), second time she didn't get it, third time I literally cried until she heard me, and last one I told her specifically I was both into women and men.
hardest shit ever just to tell my mother "oh yea, girls are also pretty".
Every time I come out it's a quick one line joke that links to something that was said
personally, i refuse to come out at all. I'm just my nonbinary lesbian self and if i feel safe to do so I'm completely open about it, but otherwise i don't feel like mentioning it to my family because for me i only need my own acceptance.

I like how the LESBIAN side character says she occasionally enjoyed the sex. Like...then she’s not a lesbian. She’s bisexual with a preference for women.
That's what I said
Occasionally enjoying sex with men doesn't necessarily mean she has the desire to have sex with them or get sexually aroused by them. So, yeah, she can still be a lesbian.
@@SnorriSnibble Then explain how she can enjoy it, if it doesn't 'arouse' her. What you said literally makes no sense.
I only said she probably doesn't feel sexual attraction towards men, meaning that she doesn't get aroused by looking at or thinking about men. Doesn't mean that she absolutely repulses and hates having sex with a men or can't enjoy the act of sex itself. She might still get aroused by something else or the act itself. Maybe she pictured a woman in her head, I don't know. She most likely wouldn't initiate it with a man herself, but she's fine with it, if he wants to have sex.
There are lots of lesbians that were in a hetero relationship before and kinda enjoyed having sex, but realized that it doesn't feel quite right.
Asexuals can have and enjoy sex with their partners, too, although they usually don't feel sexual attraction or get aroused by anything at all. Because it's intimate.
You don't have to be especially horny for someone to have and enjoy sex with them.
Kristina Ma Asexuality is a spectrum. Being a lesbian isn’t.
Maas isnt the best at representation for this reason: she follows toxic and demeaning stereotypes, and to claim a lesbian ENJOYED sex, even occasionally, with a man feeds into the lesbophobic mindset that “maybe this man will be the one to convert her”. Again: this character is bisexual with a high preference for women.

He was intelligent and he was playing the game, and even though I hated him, I respected him for it. If he had a redemption arc through the series and ended up being allies with Feyre and Tamlin, I think I would have liked this series so much more, but to suddenly have characters do a 180 like that ... it didn't make sense to me. So now I'm watching these videos to understand the major points of the series so my friend and I can still talk about it, because I can't bring myself to finish these terrible books. 😂
If only you were there to give the author these ideas…😔
I started reading because my friend recommended but if I knew it was a love triangle I would have bailed. I liked Tamlin and Feyre together but not really there were issues but I still hate the way he was turned into a villain. I read book 2 but won’t finish the series.
It's the worst when authors do this, as a reader you feel cheated. It isn't a good look on the author either, because, to me at least, it gives the impression they don't care about readers or that they see the readers as fools.
A trilogy that I was really enjoying had the first two books making you root for this one guy. The author set everything up for him to be endgame, it was what made sense. There wasn't even a love triangle, because for the entirety of those first two books the MC only interacted with this one guy and she was completely head over heels, but in the third book suddenly a new guy appeared and just like that the MC and this new guy were supposed to be literal soulmates and the first guy we rooted for in the beginning for *two* whole books got tossed aside. It was infuriating. And to support this new pairing the author had the first guy act so out of character out of nowhere and for no reason other than to have the readers rooting for the new guy instead. To this day it makes me angry.
Anyway, sorry for ranting lol, I just wanted to say I understand the frustration.
@@treceslez Lmao I totally understand, can I ask which trilogy it was? Because I swear that sounds so familiar to me but I can't remember the name of the series.
@@hnichole Oh, it's a self published trilogy written in my native language, I don't think it hasn't been translated to English, but there surely are a lot of other books with this exact same problems, some authors really love character derailment xD

The rest of the monologue was about her relationship with her family, Azriel, Cassian, Nephelle and Andromache. And Feyre wanted to know the part about her relationship with Azriel and Cassian so it is not like she overshared or anything.

The way feyre talks about Tamlin is soooo condescending, as if no one else has any flaws or battles they are struggling with?! I only read the third book in the hope that we would see feyre and tamlin discuss their issues truthfully and work through their issues regardless of if they were together or not. It was so infuriating, i honestly hated the third book it was so hard to get through.

in the year 2030, filmography professors are going to assign their students to rewatch all the classics to gather a proper understanding of true art: gone with the wild, citizen kane, casablanca, i read a court of wings and ruin and now im an alcoholic.
That lesbian character is so badly written. "I sleep with men in part because I enjoy it" if the author wanted to respectfully portray lesbians and how they face compulsory heterosexuality they would've never written shit like this my GOD that one actually pissed me off
M_MKULTRA I’m not being sarcastic I’m genuinely curious. Would it have been better if she said something like “I sleep with men because it’s the norm, I don’t enjoy it, but I didn’t know women were an option”?
@@awkwardotter13 that's in essence what compulsory heterosexuality is. It involves lesbians or gay men sleeping with the opposite sex because it's expected of them or because if they're out of the closet it can put them in danger. It's a sensitive topic though, and you need to be respectful when portraying it in fiction which this book was not.
M_MKULTRA Ah that makes sense. I’ve read other books where it was done well but I think overall this book was just a dumpster fire XD
@@Meriamfunlandagain wow, you made me sad, I barely slept around because I can't go beyond that sense of rejection when you don't feel for the other person (like having a one night stand, you barely know them) so to imagine having to do it because it's expected gave me the chills. WTF. Yeah no thanks. Women motivated by being rewarded for toeing the patriarchal line is a really interesting theme to explore because it's so goddamn pervasive irl, but if that's what the author was trying to get at (?) sounds like she terribly missed the mark with the same old shite.

The books were pure just pure fan service. Cant say I'm complaining
I've watched this video more than five times and just now occurred to me that if Feyre is not in love with tamlin the curse should be restored??? Like it doesn't have anything in the curse that says something about this...
It makes me a bit ill that I paid such close attention reading but.... I think the curse was technically broken by Feyre figuring out the answer to the riddle. Tampon missed the deadline to break the curse with her "I love you" that's why she was fighting the worm and shit 🤷🏻♀️

This comment aged "well" ?
Your whole rant about reading this for the sex scenes hit home with me. That’s basically the reason why I bought a lot of those trashy erotica novels. Like, really? Y’all think I’m reading it for the plot? Hell no. I’m reading it for the smut. That’s it. I don’t give a crap about character development and sh*t. I’m here for the smut.
I kinda do that to most smut novels I read and then get genuinely surprised when the translator pointed out a slight character development of the MC, like, "Oh? Development? S-sure, yess, s-she's developed y-yeah, now I noticed that-- I mean, I always noticed that, y-yeah. . ." My brain was a mush, I was there because I was horny and wanted to read the smut, why would I notice a slight character development? I didn't even notice the plot until someone pointed it out! Granted, it was a full smut novel with, like, 95% dirty smut, my brain is turned off most of the time.
There is one smut novel that I read that I noticed the development to, however, because the author actually set up the characters and their background solidly. It was polyandry and through some fcken miracle, all the MLs are, while a bit fcked in the head, actually genuinely interesting characters with their own pros and cons. The female lead was the standard 'pretty but not that pretty' pornstar who just somehow got involved with these hot men. Two of them knew her for years and fell for her during that time, one fell because she cared for him, one fell because sex with her somehow helps with his research, another one fell for her in a stalkerish way because her innocent girlish appearance triggered his predator instinct (sex was hot tho, I was down really bad), while the last one. . . He didn't really 'fall' but I think he just wants to join in. They all got character development, even the female lead. It was nice... But my reason to read it is still 70% the smut.
The funny thing is that in Book 1, Feyre broke the curse with "true love" (which we can all assume and agree that it was supposed to be with Tamlin because all of the curse and shit, him being the main lead, etc. etc.) and then suddenly in Book 2 that supposed "true love" suddenly shifted into an abusive and problematic relationship that she had to get away from Tamlin. Turns out that Feyre x Tamlin story and the whole (chaotic and confusing) plot of Book 1 was just bullshit.
I think SJM wanted to "shock" the readers with an underdeveloped plot and even underdeveloped characters. Still can't believe that Tamlin ended up being a whole different shitty person when in fact he was an "okay" character in the first book and then Rhys magically got glorified with his simplistic views and shallow definition on feminism.🙂
Edit: And oh my god I forgot to mention the so many scenes with varying levels of hypocrisy. It's too many to count but it's there!!!
