Also don’t forget how it was made up to be such a disgusting and horrible thing for Tamlin to keep Feyre locked in the manor and have his court decide for her if she should train her powers. And in this book Rhysand goes and keeps her pregnancy issues hidden from her, puts her in a literal bubble so no one, not even his friends, interact with her and stops her from doing stuff. And Feyre has no qualms about that, no triggering trauma or anything. Make it make sense.

Have you read the book? The "fucking only one dude" part wasn't healing... the healing part was dealing with her alcohol addiction, getting a life purpose and working on herself (training, job). She was using alcohol and sex to evade herself and escape from her actual feelings.... and part of those feelings where for Cassian. So it makes sense that after facing her feelings she is finally able to tell him how she feels, but it didn't happen fucking, it happened when they were appart and in danger, hoping to be together once again. Cassian helps her, but not with monogamous sex... he loves her even when she hates herself, and that has nothing to do with sex.

TBH it would be cool to have fairies be able to communicate their emotions by scent. I mean, lots of eusocial insects do that. It would have been a nice bit of worldbuilding if the fairy folk cannot lie to each other, because they can always smell each other's emotions in addition to hearing each others words and seeing each other's body language. Bonus points if fairies actually released pollen to fertilize each other and if that's an involuntary process that happens if the man is aroused. Women can protect themselves against unwanted pregnancy by drinking contraceptive tea, of course.
Was it just me; or were the sex scenes in this book WAYYYY more graphic and out of character than even other SJM books? At least in the past books she would cut down on the use of words like sex, and cock, and balls and try to dress it up in high fantasy banter…

The worst crime in this entire book for me was 100% Rhysand not telling Feyre about her own body and her own pregnancy. That is NOT giving her a choice. That is not giving her autonomy. And then the way its played like Nesta is the criminal for telling her sister and she has to apologize for that. Rhysand CAGING HER the same way Tamlin did, not letting her make her own choices, not even letting her own friends and family touch her, really disgusted me. I hated Rhysand in this book and keeping the details of the pregnancy from Feyre absolutely disgusted me. Big side eye to anyone who stans Rhysand after this book tbh.

Then there's another war, Rhys wins and becomes High King of Prythian. Also, he never did any of the irritating things SJM made him do. Sometimes I feel like Rhys was someone else's idea, SJM took him and messed him up. LOL sorry for the rant I just liked Rhys too much. My bad. I still love this series. lol
The thing is there are stories like that where it works, the main character is in a bad situation, gets everything they wanted, still isn't happy, learns a lesson about humility or something, and uses their new situation/status/powers to do better in the world. This isn't that kind of story however, everyone is too selfish or obsessed with meaningless drama to actually do anything productive.

Exactly! Sometimes the 'power bad' narrative can be quite boring. Most human characters who got special powers they end up loosing them or they reject that power. Reading The folk of the air was so refreshing because the main character actually wanted power and everytime she go it she was thriving.
I actually really relate with the aversion to power and being more “special” than other people. I’m a deeply democratic person - believing everyone is equal - so the idea that I could be more than someone in a way if like… unbearable to me. If that makes sense?

For real. I gave up on the books after the third one came out. Before the third one, the books had their issues, yeah, but it was a nice escapism from real life--and had an overall okay message. Writing wasn't bad, but wasn't great, and the characters were... interesting? Nesta was always my favorite, and I was excited to see her grow more based on power than the love of a man, lmao (tbh, before the weird shit with Cassian came out, I shipped her and Mor, because I thought they would make a super interesting couple). But... no. Can't say I'm not surprised it turned out bad. I just am not quite sure what happened. Her books have never been great but they were, at one point, not terrible. It's like SJM's writing and motivation has gone completely downhill, lol. Hope she's okay.
As someone who was obsessed fae mythology and folk lore all throughout my childhood and is currently writing an urban fantasy book series that adheres to it, the Court of Thorns and Roses series annoys the fuck out me. Every mention of smells and mates and wings makes me wanna tear my hair out because it’s just. So different. Actual fairies would have been more interesting than the fairies in these books.
The "faeries" in this book aren't even faeries, they're just glorified humans that have powers, are super-duper mega sexy and are immortal. For no reason whatsoever. Because it doesn't change the story. I've read a few books with faeries and, honestly, ACOTAR just takes a massive dump on actual faerie lore. Not only that, but there's history to that lore. SJM is a bigger joke than the circus. 🤡
This is a huge problem I have with this series. These characters aren't faeries. FFS, Nesta is doing core workouts as her magic training. It's such a limit of creativity in the paranormal romance genre, I've found. The non-human characters are just humans with some sort of magic, physical enhancements, or both, or more. It's so tiring. I like reading about the negotiations needed between human sensibilities and creatures that don't comprehend them.

The first book interested me, though I was not a fan of turning Robin Goodfellow into the “friendzoned best friend” trope (lame thing to do to Puck, a trickster character). But the second book in the series tanked my investment; I could barely finish it. I’m glad they worked for you though! :)

ACOSF destroyed whatever enjoyment I had had with the ACOTAR series. Before, I thought of it as an escapist fantasy soap opera with its flaws and ridiculous moments yet an OK overall message. Now, I think that the series reinforce the old adages about a “woman’s place”. Feyre, the one who was supposedly dying at the idea of becoming a housewife/hostess/childbirthing machine at Tamlin’s court… became exactly that at Rhysand’s. Nesta had to lose her mega powers as to not intimidate the feminist king Rhysand, and she also needed to find the love of a good man and smile more. And Mor, the only openly LGBT character in the core cast, was swept away under the rug and did not get a say in important decisions, despite being a Second to the feminist king Rhysand. And yeah, reproductive abuse is totally fine as long as it’s done by a handsome dark-haired man as opposed to a blonde guy. /s

You know what I think pissed me off in this entire book was Feyre. Like she knows what it’s like to have free choice taken away from you. Tamlin did that to her - isolating and trapping her claiming it’s for her own safety. And he was called out for it, rightfully so be that’s abusive. But it’s fine when she does the same exact thing to her own fucking sister? Especially when you think about the fact that Nesta was assaulted in the past by her fiancé. But to destroy her home and giving her no choice but to go with Cassian???? In that situation how is Feyre better than Tamlin when she just did the exact same thing. nesta didn't want a therapist or any type of help. Feyre wanted to help her but just went about it wrong. Nesta had no home. it was easy to see she wasn't happy while she was drinking and having tons of sex. she was depressed and had loads of ptsd and they had to do something. Nesta and her habits had obviously gone way too long and she needed to go train and be with Cassian. those two situations are very different. countless times feyre has taken care of Nesta and btw if u read it you'd know she did have a choice whether or not to go with cassian. they are sisters but Nesta has never wanted to be.

The more I think about it none of them are much better than Tamlin like even Rhys who is all about giving Feyre “choice” takes one of the most important choices away from her when he doesn’t tell her about the dangers which put her LIFE at risk with the pregnancy??? now all of them annoy me in some way 🤣

And I can see why they wanted to “help” her but they did it so horribly. Nesta isn’t the easiest to like which is understandable. But they literally slut shamed her. They could’ve tried to talk to her more delicately. Actually treat her as a victim who’s experiencing trauma and ptsd. And the whole intervention was a mess. There was absolutely no reason for Rhys and Amren to be there. It should’ve been done between her and her sisters - people that actually care for her well being. Also the way they treated Nesta’s trauma is completely different to how they treated Feyre when she was traumatized. People need patience. Not everyone reacts and deals the same way to trauma.

i remember attending one of her talks and she mentioned that when she has a word block, she would force herself to write something. And back then i thought that was such good advice! But now reading her books, i realised that is the last thing any writer should do.
It's kinda a way to go as well. When I want to write but no words come up, I just wrote whatever I thought would work and then come back later to see if the future me actually agree with the past me. Most of the times, I didn't. But in the progress of messing around, I usually got a new idea that I like and gives me inspiration. But this....? This is not it.

It sounds like what pro-choice people assume pro-life arguments are. Most pro-life organizations, including the Catholic Church, are VERY adamant that in cases where the mother’s life is at risk that an abortion is necessary. My mom almost died from pregnancy and childbirth complications because Catholic hospital policies won’t allow termination of pregnancy. And then they wouldn’t let her get her tubes tied after the fact. She had to go to a secular hospital.

We spent a lot of time debating the church's social teaching and they are clear that when the mother's life is in danger from pregnancy she should terminate it. You should research the hospital and their policies if that's the case because you may have a possible lawsuit.

I don't understand how SJM can only write one positive-ish male character at a time. Like how did Rhys become Tamlin from book two??? Why is it that now that we're focused on a new couple, the old guy gets made into the overprotective creepy asshole as if no one is going to notice it. Feyre came from an overprotective, abusive, controlling relationship to then be told she has a choice and then gets it immediately taken away again! And it's always a complete 180 form one book to the next without any form of character development. But maybe that's just me.

I wouldn't mind the "possessive" thing so much if there were actually meaningful discussions in the series about why the fairies of this world are slaves to their instincts and whether they try and combat them for the sake of the ones they supposedly love. Like, we're supposed to be dealing with non-human creatures; there is so much room to explore societal dissonance on acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. But SJM just writes their magical creatures as regular-ass humans with abilities and wings, with many characters just shrugging their shoulders at behaviour that is ignored depending on who's doing it.

I went into this series with the "knowledge" that this is mostly smut, and then I read the first trilogy and I was so confused as to why this weird "plot" thingy had to be forced into it. Now everything is inconsistent, nothing makes sense within universe, it's dragged and boring as a story, the only characters who have flaws are the ones the author says that have flaws (Tam and Nesta, the ones who don't feel like cardboard cutouts), the others' flaws and wrongdoings are never addressed or acknowledged. The story and the values within it and the topics it deals with are constructed poorly and rather repulsively. So yeah, there was room to explore these interesting topics throughout the hundreds and hundreds of boring empty pages of just unedited fanfic, but "it's a fantasy", except every decent fantasy has its own built up rules and physics and laws and everything. "It's fantasy" is not a valid excuse or argument for a fantasy when it's poorly written and thus deemed unrealistic.

And in this book Rhysand goes and keeps her pregnancy issues hidden from her, puts her in a literal bubble so no one, not even his friends, interact with her and stops her from doing stuff. And Feyre has no qualms about that, no triggering trauma or anything. Make it make sense.

Have you read the book? The "fucking only one dude" part wasn't healing... the healing part was dealing with her alcohol addiction, getting a life purpose and working on herself (training, job). She was using alcohol and sex to evade herself and escape from her actual feelings.... and part of those feelings where for Cassian. So it makes sense that after facing her feelings she is finally able to tell him how she feels, but it didn't happen fucking, it happened when they were appart and in danger, hoping to be together once again. Cassian helps her, but not with monogamous sex... he loves her even when she hates herself, and that has nothing to do with sex.

The worst crime in this entire book for me was 100% Rhysand not telling Feyre about her own body and her own pregnancy. That is NOT giving her a choice. That is not giving her autonomy. And then the way its played like Nesta is the criminal for telling her sister and she has to apologize for that. Rhysand CAGING HER the same way Tamlin did, not letting her make her own choices, not even letting her own friends and family touch her, really disgusted me. I hated Rhysand in this book and keeping the details of the pregnancy from Feyre absolutely disgusted me. Big side eye to anyone who stans Rhysand after this book tbh.

In my world, Feyre dies after the Hybern war, because she mends the cauldron. Also, Tamlin doesn't help to bring her back, so Rhys kills him. Then there's another war, Rhys wins and becomes High King of Prythian. Also, he never did any of the irritating things SJM made him do. Sometimes I feel like Rhys was someone else's idea, SJM took him and messed him up. LOL sorry for the rant I just liked Rhys too much. My bad. I still love this series. lol
The thing is there are stories like that where it works, the main character is in a bad situation, gets everything they wanted, still isn't happy, learns a lesson about humility or something, and uses their new situation/status/powers to do better in the world. This isn't that kind of story however, everyone is too selfish or obsessed with meaningless drama to actually do anything productive.

Exactly! Sometimes the 'power bad' narrative can be quite boring. Most human characters who got special powers they end up loosing them or they reject that power. Reading The folk of the air was so refreshing because the main character actually wanted power and everytime she go it she was thriving.

For real. I gave up on the books after the third one came out. Before the third one, the books had their issues, yeah, but it was a nice escapism from real life--and had an overall okay message. Writing wasn't bad, but wasn't great, and the characters were... interesting?
Nesta was always my favorite, and I was excited to see her grow more based on power than the love of a man, lmao (tbh, before the weird shit with Cassian came out, I shipped her and Mor, because I thought they would make a super interesting couple). But... no.
Can't say I'm not surprised it turned out bad. I just am not quite sure what happened. Her books have never been great but they were, at one point, not terrible. It's like SJM's writing and motivation has gone completely downhill, lol. Hope she's okay.

As someone who was obsessed fae mythology and folk lore all throughout my childhood and is currently writing an urban fantasy book series that adheres to it, the Court of Thorns and Roses series annoys the fuck out me. Every mention of smells and mates and wings makes me wanna tear my hair out because it’s just. So different. Actual fairies would have been more interesting than the fairies in these books.
The "faeries" in this book aren't even faeries, they're just glorified humans that have powers, are super-duper mega sexy and are immortal. For no reason whatsoever. Because it doesn't change the story.
I've read a few books with faeries and, honestly, ACOTAR just takes a massive dump on actual faerie lore. Not only that, but there's history to that lore. SJM is a bigger joke than the circus. 🤡
This is a huge problem I have with this series. These characters aren't faeries. FFS, Nesta is doing core workouts as her magic training. It's such a limit of creativity in the paranormal romance genre, I've found. The non-human characters are just humans with some sort of magic, physical enhancements, or both, or more. It's so tiring. I like reading about the negotiations needed between human sensibilities and creatures that don't comprehend them.
the iron fae series by Julie kagawa are the only decent faery books I've ever read

The first book interested me, though I was not a fan of turning Robin Goodfellow into the “friendzoned best friend” trope (lame thing to do to Puck, a trickster character). ACOSF destroyed whatever enjoyment I had had with the ACOTAR series. Before, I thought of it as an escapist fantasy soap opera with its flaws and ridiculous moments yet an OK overall message. Now, I think that the series reinforce the old adages about a “woman’s place”. Feyre, the one who was supposedly dying at the idea of becoming a housewife/hostess/childbirthing machine at Tamlin’s court… became exactly that at Rhysand’s. Nesta had to lose her mega powers as to not intimidate the feminist king Rhysand, and she also needed to find the love of a good man and smile more. And Mor, the only openly LGBT character in the core cast, was swept away under the rug and did not get a say in important decisions, despite being a Second to the feminist king Rhysand. And yeah, reproductive abuse is totally fine as long as it’s done by a handsome dark-haired man as opposed to a blonde guy. /s

You know what I think pissed me off in this entire book was Feyre. Like she knows what it’s like to have free choice taken away from you. Tamlin did that to her - isolating and trapping her claiming it’s for her own safety. And he was called out for it, rightfully so be that’s abusive. But it’s fine when she does the same exact thing to her own fucking sister? Especially when you think about the fact that Nesta was assaulted in the past by her fiancé. Yet it’s fine because it’s to “help Nesta”. Like I understand if you don’t want to fund her anymore - it’s your money do what you fucking want with it. But to destroy her home and giving her no choice but to go with Cassian???? In that situation how is Feyre better than Tamlin when she just did the exact same thing.
ALSO WHY WASNT NESTA GIVEN A FUCKING THERAPIST????
nesta didn't want a therapist or any type of help. Feyre wanted to help her but just went about it wrong. Nesta had no home. it was easy to see she wasn't happy while she was drinking and having tons of sex. she was depressed and had loads of ptsd and they had to do something. Nesta and her habits had obviously gone way too long and she needed to go train and be with Cassian. those two situations are very different. countless times feyre has taken care of Nesta and btw if u read it you'd know she did have a choice whether or not to go with cassian. they are sisters but Nesta has never wanted to be.
I’ve never looked at it this way but you’ve just made me realize ! The more I think about it none of them are much better than Tamlin like even Rhys who is all about giving Feyre “choice” takes one of the most important choices away from her when he doesn’t tell her about the dangers which put her LIFE at risk with the pregnancy??? now all of them annoy me in some way 🤣
@@sophiatsugawa7996 Ok when you said Nesta was given a “choice” she was told to go with Cassian or the human lands. So it was either go with Cassian or be hunted down like an animal. And I can see why they wanted to “help” her but they did it so horribly. Nesta isn’t the easiest to like which is understandable. But they literally slut shamed her. They could’ve tried to talk to her more delicately. Actually treat her as a victim who’s experiencing trauma and ptsd. And the whole intervention was a mess. There was absolutely no reason for Rhys and Amren to be there. It should’ve been done between her and her sisters - people that actually care for her well being.
Also the way they treated Nesta’s trauma is completely different to how they treated Feyre when she was traumatized. People need patience. Not everyone reacts and deals the same way to trauma.
@@annahx6461 agreed. Like in what way was hiding the fact that she could die from child birth a way to protect her. That’s just fucking controlling and abusive. He in no shape or form had the right to make that decision for her.
i remember attending one of her talks and she mentioned that when she has a word block, she would force herself to write something. And back then i thought that was such good advice!
But now reading her books, i realised that is the last thing any writer should do.
It's kinda a way to go as well. When I want to write but no words come up, I just wrote whatever I thought would work and then come back later to see if the future me actually agree with the past me. Most of the times, I didn't. But in the progress of messing around, I usually got a new idea that I like and gives me inspiration.
But this....? This is not it.

I mean like, why did this need to even be a thing. Out of all the crazy plots, SJM is like yes. This necessary one with reasonable solutions we are not going to deploy. How else are we going to possibly justify taking Nesta from the most powerful person ever to another Feyre lap dog.
It sounds like what pro-choice people assume pro-life arguments are. Most pro-life organizations, including the Catholic Church, are VERY adamant that in cases where the mother’s life is at risk that an abortion is necessary. Honestly, stuff like that is so damaging to the discourse because it reinforces the false assumptions either side makes about the other.
@@jeepersjava I was raised Catholic that’s just really not the case. My mom almost died from pregnancy and childbirth complications because Catholic hospital policies won’t allow termination of pregnancy. And then they wouldn’t let her get her tubes tied after the fact. She had to go to a secular hospital.

We spent a lot of time debating the church's social teaching and they are clear that when the mother's life is in danger from pregnancy she should terminate it. You should research the hospital and their policies if that's the case because you may have a possible lawsuit.

And there's the dumb ass bargain that the other will die too if one of them does. But fear not, Feyre cursebreaker will probably be able to undo both, because she's the ultimate Mary Sue (tm).
I don't understand how SJM can only write one positive-ish male character at a time. Like how did Rhys become Tamlin from book two??? Why is it that now that we're focused on a new couple, the old guy gets made into the overprotective creepy asshole as if no one is going to notice it. Feyre came from an overprotective, abusive, controlling relationship to then be told she has a choice and then gets it immediately taken away again! And it's always a complete 180 form one book to the next without any form of character development. But maybe that's just me.

The comment about how we’re supposed to sympathize w feyre for her ptsd but villainize tamlin for his is so true, I’ve always hated how Sarah did that. She also does it constantly throughout her other books (villainizes someone for basically nothing so she can make another love interest more appealing). Tamlin sucks but so does Rhysand and I stand by that; tamkin deserves better. Nesta was ALSO villianized for her ptsd

I tried to read the book because I like suffering and instead I felt so angry. Feyre and Rhysand were always ridiculous, but I HATE, absolutely fucking HATE the way they treated Nesta. She shouldn't have become part of their court at all. They are so immature and petty, it's absurd; I still cannot believe they tried to force her into healing because of others. It's literally the same thing Elain said about her trauma and how Nesta only wanted to view how she suffered from it. Like, SJM really doesn’t see the stupidity and hypocrisy? I am so mAdD help
Tbh I dont like Nesta cuz I feel like they never addressed how awful she was to Feyre before she ended up in the whole fairy-drama. I want to see her at least acknowledge and take accountability for letting the youngest of them fend for their lives while they were poor and all she did was treat her like shit during that time. If she doesnt acknowledge it or show remorse, tbh I just cant with her

When Tamlin shielded Feyre inside a house it was horrible and traumatising and she just needed to escape, when Rhys shields Feyre inside her own body-bubble it's just Rhys being Rhys 😭 So protective of Rhys and so toxic from TamTam 😭 Sarah just put one not possessive dude into this goddamn series is that too much to ask 😭

I wouldn't mind the "possessive" thing so much if there were actually meaningful discussions in the series about why the fairies of this world are slaves to their instincts and whether they try and combat them for the sake of the ones they supposedly love. Like, we're supposed to be dealing with non-human creatures; there is so much room to explore societal dissonance on acceptable and unacceptable behaviour. But SJM just writes their magical creatures as regular-ass humans with abilities and wings, with many characters just shrugging their shoulders at behaviour that is ignored depending on who's doing it.

I went into this series with the "knowledge" that this is mostly smut, and then I read the first trilogy and I was so confused as to why this weird "plot" thingy had to be forced into it. Now everything is inconsistent, nothing makes sense within universe, it's dragged and boring as a story, the only characters who have flaws are the ones the author says that have flaws (Tam and Nesta, the ones who don't feel like cardboard cutouts), the others' flaws and wrongdoings are never addressed or acknowledged. The story and the values within it and the topics it deals with are constructed poorly and rather repulsively.
So yeah, there was room to explore these interesting topics throughout the hundreds and hundreds of boring empty pages of just unedited fanfic, but "it's a fantasy", except every decent fantasy has its own built up rules and physics and laws and everything. "It's fantasy" is not a valid excuse or argument for a fantasy when it's poorly written and thus deemed unrealistic.
