honestly if they wanted to do avatar, they should have adapted legend of korra. 1. the characters are already older so while its still creepy, they can get away with sex 2. korra, while great, isn't on an untouchable pedestal like avatar is 3. plenty of teen drama to focus on 4. main sets are republic city and avatar island so you could just have like a tempily lookin place and city 5. 1920s aesthetic so sexy flappers 6. love triangle or quadrangle? 7. the antagonists are anti bending or blood benders so just have your main characters do some good janky movements and your done. 8. everyone has more european features so you wouldn't have to cast as many asian actors 9. way less furrys to cgi 10. just easier to put a darker tone on it like netflix likes to do
The only thing I disagree is point 2. But it truly is a good idea, I’d watch it even if they hired Amyte Shamalan to see if he improves or “outperforms” the source material.

As a teenager it would've been my dream to see my favorite books turned into movies or series. But after seeing several bad adaptions (Percy Jackson, New Moon/Breaking Dawn, Vampire Academy, The Giver, last two seasons of GoT, just to name a few), now it would be a nightmare. IDK why it's so hard for film makers to stick to the original source. Most of the work has been done for them, all they have to do is copy and paste.
To be fair, adapting something to a different medium is much more complicated than just copy and pasting. That doesn't excuse how garbage so many fantasy book adaptations are, but still.

Because now, instead of wasting time on exploring the effects of war on children, families being torn apart and children having to step up and take on roles they are too young for, the different affects that being in an abusive and manipulative family can have on different children, the struggle to balance being a child with the responsibilities they feel they have to take on, and placing the burden of having to save everyone on the shoulders of a mere 12 year old all whilst still having a very prominent sense of hope for the future, now they can have ssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeexxxx Netflix understands maturity people, that's why the main audience for shows like Riverdale is 12/13 year old children... The sex thing is a rumor. Also, there's no reason why they can't explore long-lasting effects of all that you mentioned above. I'm not a fan of aging them up, but they likely had a purpose in doing so other than casting convenience.

You are right, aging up the characters does not necessarily mean they can't explore any of those themes, but I would argue that you can only really age them up 2, maybe 3 years before you start getting into a different territory where you're not really dealing with kids, you're dealing with young adults and the implications behind what you have them do and the themes you try to explore change. My reaction to a 12 yo battling with the choice to kill someone is very different to my reaction to a 16/17 yo dealing with the same problem. Doesn't mean they can't have the same problem, not at all, but it evokes a different reaction, it doesn't hit quite as hard. That said, having watched other series that Netflix have put out and knowing that the original creators have left the production, my hopes for seeing them cover such nuanced topics (regardless of aging the characters up) has lowered a lot. I actually think it's more likely we will see Netflix try to explore "darker themes of war" by showing a lot more violence and gore as well as more destitution and death within populations. Not to mention generally being dark and gritty and having filters over everything to make it look washed out. Not only do I think that it itself conveys a misunderstanding of what made Avatar Avatar, but I've also seen it a million times before. It's every war film, it's every grimdark fantasy, it's been done. My original comment was mostly meant as a joke, but I appreciate you giving me a chance to properly explain my feelings about this :)

But after seeing several bad adaptions (Percy Jackson, New Moon/Breaking Dawn, Vampire Academy, The Giver, last two seasons of GoT, just to name a few), now it would be a nightmare. IDK why it's so hard for film makers to stick to the original source. Most of the work has been done for them, all they have to do is copy and paste.
To be fair, adapting something to a different medium is much more complicated than just copy and pasting. That doesn't excuse how garbage so many fantasy book adaptations are, but still.

@@thatb1h855 I was mainly talking about the actual writing. Like I said, many adaptations fuck it up way more than they should have, but books and movies have different structures, you usually can't transfer one to the other without changing some things.

Because now, instead of wasting time on exploring the effects of war on children, families being torn apart and children having to step up and take on roles they are too young for, the different affects that being in an abusive and manipulative family can have on different children, the struggle to balance being a child with the responsibilities they feel they have to take on, and placing the burden of having to save everyone on the shoulders of a mere 12 year old all whilst still having a very prominent sense of hope for the future, now they can have ssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeexxxx
Netflix understands maturity people, that's why the main audience for shows like Riverdale is 12/13 year old children...

The sex thing is a rumor. Also, there's no reason why they can't explore long-lasting effects of all that you mentioned above. I'm not a fan of aging them up, but they likely had a purpose in doing so other than casting convenience.

You are right, aging up the characters does not necessarily mean they can't explore any of those themes, but I would argue that you can only really age them up 2, maybe 3 years before you start getting into a different territory where you're not really dealing with kids, you're dealing with young adults and the implications behind what you have them do and the themes you try to explore change. My reaction to a 12 yo battling with the choice to kill someone is very different to my reaction to a 16/17 yo dealing with the same problem. Doesn't mean they can't have the same problem, not at all, but it evokes a different reaction, it doesn't hit quite as hard.
That said, having watched other series that Netflix have put out and knowing that the original creators have left the production, my hopes for seeing them cover such nuanced topics (regardless of aging the characters up) has lowered a lot. I actually think it's more likely we will see Netflix try to explore "darker themes of war" by showing a lot more violence and gore as well as more destitution and death within populations. Not to mention generally being dark and gritty and having filters over everything to make it look washed out. Not only do I think that it itself conveys a misunderstanding of what made Avatar Avatar, but I've also seen it a million times before. It's every war film, it's every grimdark fantasy, it's been done.
My original comment was mostly meant as a joke, but I appreciate you giving me a chance to properly explain my feelings about this :)
I think they should age the kids up a bit just so they can have older kids play them. Though it doesn't really matter to me, since i have no plans to watch it anymore.
