Ooh I know exactly the type of thing u mean, that feeling is crucial for immersion in racing games. Forza Motorsport 4 on Xbox 360 did an excellent job with that as well. You could actually tell how much traction u had based on how the tires reacted to the different driving surfaces. That’s how Forza won me over when I used to be a big Gran Turismo fan instead
I'm glad they got a little more creative and called it something different. It was the '90s, so if you put an X in the marketing it was automatically 10 times cooler. Ha ha.

One of the best things about the X Cup was occasionally there would be a crazy first bend and almost all of the CPU cars would go flying off, giving you and easy win. 😊
I’ve said it before I’ll say it again. I hope whoever at Nintendo thought up that they should sacrifice graphics for 60 fps on the N64 got a raise because despite the somewhat blocky designs of the ships, more so than other N64 games, this game has aged beautifully and is still smooth as silk.
This game is insane! I remember I really felt the extreme speed of the vehicles, the 60fps helped a lot with that regard... Also, the soundtrack, the tracks themselves, is just awesome! There's not a single bad fzero game (the game boy advance games are great too, and they also have that speed sense). I'd love to see more of this franchise...
Just imagine if F-Zero had caught on as Nintendo flagship "racing" franchise instead of Mario Kart...maybe we would have lived in a timeline where 2015 looked like what Back to The Future 2 imagined ^^
To this day, I don't understand how Mario Kart 64 got so popular. It's one of the worst racing games on the system imo. Even if you limit the scope to Kart racers, Diddy Kong racing was way better.
@@tj1622 because it had Mario in the cover. Both the kids and your grandma know who he is and would rush to buy the game. And once you have played it as a kid you can never let go because of nostalgia 😂 (Just look how Pokemon keeps selling more and more despite the games decreasing in polish lately). At the end of the day Mario Kart is perfect for casual fun play but has enough mechanics for people to sini hours into it and has mascots everywhere, so like Smash Bros it's in the perfect place to become a timless top seller.
I LOVED the track randomizer. I still think about it to this day, even though -- get this -- i only played this game one time, like 20 years ago. It was just such a cool idea, I'd never seen anything like it. Cool video!
I remember the track randomizer made a level the game couldn't beat lmao. Literally all 29 racers died. they couldn't figure out they had to decelerate a corner that would shoot them off the edge.
For me the track editor is a big reason to revisit the game, there was one in the 64DD expansion kit and there's a PC tool for replacing tracks with custom ones
There's actually a bunch of them, I don't know where Drunk got the idea that F-Zero is the only one. A few others include Bomberman 64, Clayfighter 64, Mortal Kombat 4, Super Smash Bros., Wetrix ... most 2D games are probably 60 FPS as well; things like Dr. Mario, Magical Tetris Challenge, Mischief Makers and Yoshi's Story, to name a few.
Yeah, one of the reasons the game wasn't such a hit is that these were the days when gaming magazines were at their peak. Most people saw still shots of the game and decided the graphics looked bare and simplistic. You had to see it in motion to realize that they'd traded graphical detail for speed and a rock solid framerate. And it was a good trade.
When you said you were bringing more N64 games to the mix I certainly was not expecting that one right off the bat! This game kicks ass!!! That guitar lick in the beginning of the video sets the tone.
I am one of a privileged few to own the 64DD and the F-Zero X Expansion Kit which propels this game to new heights, in my opinion even higher than GX. It's a crime against humanity that Nintendo hasn't re-released that in some form.
Hell yeah it is! I think X is definitely more fun than GX and it also has better music. Don't get me wrong, GX is amazing, but it's so challenging it can be painful to play sometimes.
i think they're both ridiculously hard. i've always been good at wipeout, which is another challenging futuristic racing game, but it seems like on normal difficulty even in the early tracks you have to play almost flawlessly to pass the other 29 cars before running out of time. idk if most people play these games on novice or if i'm just doing something wrong, but i find f-zero x ridiculously hard.
@@Jack_80 I am playing wipeout 64 as we speak..and yes even the first track is hard as all heck...GX is ridiculously hard...but X to me,while a challenge isn't that bad
@@-.CELESTE.- when i was younger i mastered the original wipeout on ps1 to where i could come in first on every track on the fastest speed every time, on these f-zero games i don't feel like that would be possible, i think you would not only need to play perfectly, but you'd need some luck as well. i'm sure there probably are some people who have mastered f-zero on n-64 and gamecube like that, but to me it just doesn't feel possible. i don't think i've ever played wipeout 64, but unless it's drastically more difficult than the other wipeout games, i'm sure i wouldn't have as much trouble winning races as in f-zero x and gtx.
Hugely underrated game imo. This is actually my second favorite N64 game (after Ocarina) and easily one of my favorite racing games ever. Never really got into GX.
My favorite thing about the track randomizer was that it would occasionally accidentally create a "dead man's curve" - a really sharp turn immediately after a jump - which would send all the AI cars crashing out of the track. If you were smart enough to take it at super low speed, you'd make it and be literally the only racer left on the course
I first played this at a hospital back in '99 when they had a N64 setup and I love how the game targeted 60fps at all times, even in 4 player split-screen. Plus having procedurally generated tracks in the X Cup was brilliant.
Up there with my favourite N64 Games. The amount on vehicles, the tracks, the sense of speed and oh that soundtrack! Amazing. Would love to see a modern F zero!
Oh yeah, I blame this game for getting me into heavy metal. One thing I'd add: There's still active players on F Zero Central too, so there's even some friendly competition going for it. Good video, you summed it up pretty well!
I still want to see an eShop rerelease/localisation of the 64DD _eXpansion Kit,_ which had a bonus cup, some extra songs (including the famous metal-style cover of Mario Kart 64 Rainbow Road) _and_ a full track builder.
F-Zero X is still by far my favorite top 3 Nintendo 64 titles. I don’t feel F-Zero series gets the same recognition as other Nintendo exclusive titles. The F-Zero AX Arcade machines for the NGC F-Zero GX title are pretty rare. I liked that the data from your NGC card can be used for your custom vehicles at the arcade machine.
I was gonna say something about TX, but you answered that. I wouldn't mind seeing you Branch out more like this. It's hard for me to think of other places for you to go with SNES, so I could only imagine how hard it is for you.
I loved playing this game so much. The battle mode is a bit underrated, and deserves a little more love, IMO. You could double tap the shoulder buttons to perform a spin attack to the left or right which, if timed properly, will launch your opponents sideways into the walls or off the track. Basic, but incredibly satisfying to execute, immediatley yeeting rival cars out of the frame at lightning speed. Amazing.
This was the first game I owned. My older brother and sister had saved up some money and bought it for me for Christmas. It was pretty mindblowing to play a 3D game that moved that fast. I vividly remember going in a pipe for the first time and my little babby brain just melted. It also acted as a entry point for me to discover heavy metal. Really great memories. Also, gonna be pedantic and point out that F-Zero X is not the only N64 game to run at 60fps. There were definitely more of them like Yoshi's Story and Mischief Makers. Most of these are 2D games or sprite-based, but there were also a few 3D ones in there like Mortal Kombat 4 and Smash Bros(at least when playing fewer than 3 players).
Was thinking of buying this, had no clue you made a video for it the other day. Ive actually never played any of the 3d f zero games. Just the 1st game and the gba games. And i loved every last one of em. Got an n64 this past month, and this game isnt too expensive.
The F-Zero series was brilliant in its use of textures to really make you feel like you were going at insane speeds. The circles on the sides of the tracks were a major contributor to this. The only other games that gave me the same sense of ludicrous speed (“they’ve gone to plaid!”) that F-Zero has is the Wipeout series.
i love the boost-power mechanics, sacrificing shield energy for a speed boost. it's a thrill and addiction maintaining constant velocity at the cost of ever higher death risk. and all this within a beautiful game world with amazing soundtrack.
This FZX was all about speed and fast paced gameplay, even in 2020, this still a relevant game to play. I was quite surprised how well that game aged... really. I even (personally) find it aged better than F Zero GX in it's one way.
I still remember the very first time I got to play this at the Toys R Us that was in the Holyoke Mall in Massachusetts.....flying off the track on Big Blue 2 while my Dad was standing in the background saying, "I expected it was gonna be faster!" and I was like "Are you kidding? That was awesome!" Such a great game
Wow you just did this!!! Thank you! F-Zero X is absolutely my favorite racing game of all time! If only the N64 Disk Drive was more accessible so i could play the expansion.
Love this game and its soundtrack. Still a lot of fun to play today, especially in HD on an emulator. It's not the only 60 fps game though. Smash Bros is another.
I love the music on F-Zero X and the original songs from F-Zero. They sound really awesome. Last time I played it was last summer and it’s a good game.
Yeah, this is a pretty nice game :3 I actually did not know about the track randomizer! I guess I never played far enough to unlock it, so that gives me incentive to revisit it again :) Thank you for the heads-up!
I played this game a lot and i loved so much when i was younger. The sense of speed is just awesome and i do think everyone just should have a look to feel it in person.

F-Zero X was an amazing game, the atmosphere was perfect the sound was perfect and most importantly it was fast af.
And once you have played it as a kid you can never let go because of nostalgia 😂
(Just look how Pokemon keeps selling more and more despite the games decreasing in polish lately). At the end of the day Mario Kart is perfect for casual fun play but has enough mechanics for people to sini hours into it and has mascots everywhere, so like Smash Bros it's in the perfect place to become a timless top seller.
@@mafiousbj Finally, someone else who sees it as I do.
I LOVED the track randomizer. I still think about it to this day, even though -- get this -- i only played this game one time, like 20 years ago. It was just such a cool idea, I'd never seen anything like it.
Cool video!
Excellent video! Great content and I'd like to see you dive into more series continuations as well!
not to mention the EXpansion kit with its sick metal cover of rainbow road
Would love to see you cover the Excitebike series. I feel like a lot of people missed out on how awesome excite truck was.
Here's a review of Excitebike on the NES:
ua-cam.com/video/CGSHwvLAM2w/v-deo.html
The random metal growls in the car select music always amused me.
All the voice acting was hilarious - it sounded like someone with a mouth full of peanut butter!
I remember the track randomizer made a level the game couldn't beat lmao. Literally all 29 racers died. they couldn't figure out they had to decelerate a corner that would shoot them off the edge.
Big Blue stage music (decide in the eyes) is my favored game song of all time in a tie with Fire Youngster from Ace Combat 2.
3rd Major Thing: F Zero X has *the BEST* F Zero Soundtrack of all Time!
The best = the most heavy metal.
I literally got goosebumps @ 3:11 hearing that guitar again. Thanks for this 🤘
For me the track editor is a big reason to revisit the game, there was one in the 64DD expansion kit and there's a PC tool for replacing tracks with custom ones
Ill get a little bit nostalgia sick when i hear that soundtrack. A little tear in the corner of my eye!
Didn't know there was a 60fps N64 title. That's really cool.
For a first party Nintendo title, this one feels very under the radar.
@@vaguerant
Yeah, that seemed really odd to me.
Might be worth looking into.
@@vaguerant _Yoshi's Story_ is one of them, too, much to its benefit. I find it highly underrated.
I like X's comic book and heavy metal aesthetic a lot more than GX's sleeker one
This is probably my favorite racing game. It's just so fast and balanced, and the soundtrack is perfect for the job. Thanks a lot for the video.
Best racer ever...Gran Turismo is great but it can't match that Nintendo quality
That greeting at the end of your videos never gets old. I feel significantly lightened after finishing the video, lol.
I love this game so much. The advanced techniques speedrunners have found in this game are amazing to behold and fun to try to replicate
Great timing! I just got back into this series and I'm doing another playthrough of the GameCube edition of this franchise.
I was a bigger fan of Extreme-G, though I probably should've scooped up both.
This game’s buttery smooth 60 fps feels so satisfying when you come to it after playing other N64 games.
Fantastic review, ready to have a great rest of my day now!
Great video, great comeback! You needed a break!
One of my favorite racing games ever.
F-Zero X is the best N64 title.
Simple, but fogless graphics, 60 FPS, great gameplay, replayability and awesome soundtrack.
I was gonna say something about TX, but you answered that.
I wouldn't mind seeing you Branch out more like this. It's hard for me to think of other places for you to go with SNES, so I could only imagine how hard it is for you.
When he said "I hope you have a great rest of your day" I felt that
I loved playing this game so much. Amazing.
I'm a big fan of the N64, and F-Zero X is one of my favorites! Great video, Drunk!
This game is one of the few that aged very well from N64.
Dude if you’re going to start reviewing 3D games this will be fantastic! Great video man!
Great game. Nice to see it getting some love. The DD expansion also added a track editor which is crazy.
Please continue with the N64 content! Have a great rest of your day!
I suggested this video on patreon! I'm glad to see you do it :)
i love the boost-power mechanics, sacrificing shield energy for a speed boost. it's a thrill and addiction maintaining constant velocity at the cost of ever higher death risk. and all this within a beautiful game world with amazing soundtrack.
This FZX was all about speed and fast paced gameplay, even in 2020, this still a relevant game to play. I was quite surprised how well that game aged... really. I even (personally) find it aged better than F Zero GX in it's one way.
This gam is the reason why i already grew a beard when i was 15
I like the idea of checking out continuations of snes franchises on other consoles. Keep it going SNESdrunk
YOU'RE GOING THE WRONG WAY!
YOU'VE GOT BOOST POWER!
When the GX team decided to do a techno soundtrack instead of heavy metal:
POUR IT ON! YOU'RE WAY OUT IN FRONT!
TOO BAD YOU'VE LOST YOUR MACHINE
Wait, some of these quotes sound like Wave Race! Haha. BETTER GET MOVIN'.
I still remember the very first time I got to play this at the Toys R Us that was in the Holyoke Mall in Massachusetts.....flying off the track on Big Blue 2 while my Dad was standing in the background saying, "I expected it was gonna be faster!" and I was like "Are you kidding? That was awesome!"
Such a great game
Love when you do N64 stuff. Please continue with this type of video, the next game of SNES series on N64.
Wow you just did this!!! Thank you! F-Zero X is absolutely my favorite racing game of all time! If only the N64 Disk Drive was more accessible so i could play the expansion.
you can play f-zero x expansion kit on emulator now, if you wanna play it on real console you can pay around 200$ to get a everdrive 64 online
Missed you recently - Glad to see you back!
Well com back Snesdrunk! I really miss your videos, specially your intro XD
It's nuts how good racing games were on the 64
True, N64 had probably more racing game variety than it's rivals at the time.
Yeah, this is a pretty nice game :3 I actually did not know about the track randomizer! I guess I never played far enough to unlock it, so that gives me incentive to revisit it again :) Thank you for the heads-up!
could you do a review of Wave Race 64 or 1080° Snowboarding? I would like to hear your thoughts about those games.
Excellent video, I learned things about this game that I didn't know even though I never played this game back in the day.
I played this game a lot and i loved so much when i was younger. The sense of speed is just awesome and i do think everyone just should have a look to feel it in person.
Great to see you back, SNES Drunk!
Would you ever consider a review of the D&D style dungeon crawlers on SNES? Or any early console?
It’s a genre that was bigger on PC, but I’ve run across several decent ones on NES/SNES.
