When it comes to losing traction, not only does it differ from vehicle to vehicle, you’re also meant to use the fact that the N64 controller has an analogue stick (which, remember, was a new and defining feature of the N64), to carefully maneuver through corners. Like a lot of Nintendo games, F-Zero X was designed around the console and the controller it was made for. So you’re not meant to slam the analogue stick all the way left or right, but rather find the sweet spot required for that particular turn and vehicle, going as far as you need to take the corner, without losing traction. This adds to the game’s replayability, as you’ll play a lot of tracks slightly differently depending on the vehicle you’re driving. And of course, you’re also meant to use the L & R buttons during turns, when necessary. I will agree that it’s not intuitive, and that it doesn’t feel as immediately good as GX’s handling does (I got very frustrated by it as a kid). Ah F Zero X. I never played gx, but I played the heck out of x. Even cleared all the master modes. What kept me playing though... Was the rockin soundtrack. I really hope Nintendo revisit this franchise with a new entry sometime soon...
When F-Zero X first came out for the Nintendo 64, its 60fps racing news quickly traveled to the US. We didn't have this game, so I ordered it from Japan. It came with a plastic adapter so that it could be played on our consoles. I didn't understand the language on the menus, but that didn't matter. After just a few plays I knew what they all were. Still my favourite F-Zero game, especially with the DD Expansion Kit. I know GX tends to be the one most people praise (even though it feels like 90% of people who do so either played it on emulators after the fact, or haven’t even played it at all…). @@aronkoppe You’d need to buy an Ultra HDMI upgrade kit and install it yourself, or buy an N64 that’s already been HDMI modded. I did the latter, but this was a couple of years ago now, so I don’t know how available they are anymore. Do a google search for “Ultra HDMI”, and you should probably be able to find some stores online that sell some kits, and maybe even fully modded consoles. Juat a heads up, tho: it’s not cheap. @@Teknoman I always especially loved the backgrounds. Yes, the overall geometry and textures are super simpleb. But those background skyboxes with their mix of retrofuturism and high fantasy, set against purple and orange skies, make them look like environments from old heavy metal album covers.
I've been recommending the game to friends of mine. Especially if they've neer played it before. I'm glad to see this game back again and seeing all the love it gets online.
No i'm sorry but you're just hallucinating, fzerox has a superior more realistic physics than gx, witch takes you by the hand for you not to unhook, impossible on gx. Gameplay is just more technical in X and has real physics, you lost control because you're piloting a f''''' turbojet, it doesn't stick to the ground like a magnet it's a combination of both. Those crazy physics moments combined with unplacable skill training are what make this game so amazing. Nintendo has no excuse for not including dd64 version tho...
I hope (but doubt) that Nintendo eventually adds the F-ZERO X Expansion Kit to the Switch port. I personally would love to see kind of insane tracks people could create with it, especially considering that the Track Editor was said to be practically the same tools that the developers used.
“Release it now, fix it later” really seems like Nintendo’s tactic for releasing games on the Switch, and it’s getting old real quick. Why not just wait a few extra weeks/months to release a game to ensure it has all of its content and it works properly before releasing it?
When I played F-Zero X on NSO, I was impressed of this game and I don’t see the problem that it’s worse just the performance or anything else It’s just a great game 9/10
I mean, they could just bring that or adapt the arcade one. I mean, what are we on with Metroid prime? In the third version with the rumored switch remake? Why not this?
@@LosRockson well a remake compilation is one of the steps for F-Zero. A simple remake may sound ok just as Star Fox 64 got a remake treatment on 3DS, but if the franchise did not even receive a sequel treatment even after two decades, then a compilation remake is necessary and would be in the right direction for the franchise
If it weren't for that pathetic price they're charging for the subscription, I would be hyped over this. But $50 is too much, especially after the issues you mentioned. I'd rather just play it on an emulator on my laptop. I just hope this doesn't ruin it for newcomers. Also for anyone wanting about a new F-Zero or anything, blame Miyamoto for that predicament. Sales aren't an issue with this series, it's just the lack of gimmick options that Miyamoto can't think of that's holding this ip dormant.
Dude! How could you miss mentioning the amazing music! The rock sounds are also the better mix then in GX, which had great music too. Please Nintendo, bring GX with online AND a new F-Zero! It’s truly deserved.
F-Zero has always kinda seemed like Nintendo's take on the type of racing in Speed Racer to me for some reason, just without the gadgets and they're hovering cars
I definitely see that similarity. And in the anime F-Zero GP Legend, Captain Falcon was kind of like a legendary mentor to the show's main protagonist Rick Wheeler. Similar to how Racer X was to Speed Racer.
As someone who has never played an F-Zero game (unless you count the Nintendo land one) I honestly can say this is one of my favourite racing games of all time
Ah, yes. I know F-Zero X very well from back in the old days, and played it tons. (However, I've hardly ever played GX, so I don't know that one nearly as well.) (3:57) One time, I challenged myself to come in last place out of all survivors in each race, and still placed 1st overall in the end, because of the sheer amount of KOs I was able to cause to the competition. (5:06) 60 FPS indeed! I knew even back then that the gameplay looked a lot smoother than something like Super Mario 64 or Mario Kart 64. (5:17) Maybe that's why it feels like I've been doing far worse than I feel I should be when playing this on the Switch. Although, I think maybe the analog stick sensitivity could be partly to blame too, since I have trouble nudging it only slightly. (8:20) Yeah, I've heard more than enough garbled audio while playing other N64 games online with just one other person. Sometimes it's hilarious, but other times... "Ow, my freakin' ears!"
As a younger individuals with the title decade and half ago, the GX story mode ending was the ending point for me. That rainbow virtual world was too rough for me back then. I would like to see how I would fair now that I am nearly thirty ha ha.
Shame the control of the craft isn’t the same as n64. I done about two tracks and noticed it straight away. Back into original hardware to play this I guess.
This remaining dude from GameXplain has no clue. Here a few tips and how to approach the game and what made it really great. Slow down a bit before taking a sharp corner and/or don't turn too abruptly, but gradually increase into the corner. Learn how / get used to move the analogue stick very precisely. The controls are super polished (I assume it's the same as it was for the N64), the whole point is getting better at going faster in corners without sliding, that IS the Skill-tree in this game (aka, your left thump controlling skill ). So it will take time to do that for the very tough challenges. It's the danger of sliding that creates the tension and excitement on difficult courses when you try to keep pushing yourself to be faster. So keep doing it and adapt. It'll come to you without any control "fixes" There could be only one reason, that might make my comment irrelevant though: ... Maybe the Switch analogue sticks are not as precisely controllable as the N64 stick was, for some reason.. maybe the values fluctuate more than before, when trying to hold an intermediate position.
@@davidk.8686 You know it's possible to have a difference in opinion without berating others. I beat the Master Class on N64--I know how to play the game (probably not quite as well these days, I admit). In any case, one doesn't have to master something to have an opinion on it, nor do they have to love it even when they do master it. I praised most of the game's handling, but that doesn't mean I can't have preferences for other games that I believe handle some elements better.
I want to think you didn't intend for the title to be so clickbaity and exploitative of the situation with the OoT glitches on NSO and that it's an honest mistake, but it would be great if you changed it to avoid spreading misinformation. The game works exactly like it does on the N64, another video was already made by other tuber basing it on yours, claiming the game is worse on Switch, which is factually wrong. MANY people online stay with just the title and are claiming there's issues with the emulation on F-Zero X based exclusively on the title of this review.
I haven't seen whichever video you're referencing, but I was very careful to ensure it actually did run worse on Nintendo Switch. I went through frame by frame and there were constant duplicate frames on Switch, which didn't happen on Wii U or N64. I even checked on a different Switch to verify. Also, Ocarina or any other NSO had no bearing on the title of this video.
@@GameXplain I clocked 22 hours on the game on Switch and I didn't notice any frame pacing issues, neither did any of the people I played with online, I'm sure you're not lying, but it may be something that can only be detected with tools. A spanish youtuber simply took the title of your video and made his own hours later, pushing the narrative that the emulation of this game is flawed, people in the comments of this video are doing the same, when it's not a fact at all and there's no framerate pacing issue to be noticed during normal gameplay. And with how it looks on Switch in comparison, it's obvious there was work put into this version, making the narrative your title is pushing all the worse. It doesn't even reflect the tone of your overall review, and yet it has an effect on it's own. I think no one could deny there were issues with OoT on NSO at launch, but this is literally the opposite, and to perpetuate the negativity around NSO even when they do good is a shame.
@@Akira-si2ww I don't really have any control over how people choose to interpret just a headline --i only said it was "worse" not that it was bad. With that being said, the difference stood out to me immediately and I did find it pretty jarring after playing the other versions just before, even if it is still playable.
The controls in this game are pretty much perfect, and it seems like you're just...not very familiar with them. It doesn't make them bad or cumbersome.
@@denimchicken104 It really is that simple, and the timing is not strict. And why do you and this review feel the need to compare this game to something that came out later on a more powerful console? I still think X controls actually better than GX, but its a very silly argument. A game that came out 5 years later on a more powerful console tried to make it easier...why is that a point against this game?
@@denimchicken104 Like I said, I still would argue that X has tighter controls than GX. Graphics wise X is among the worst looking 64 games even by the standards back then. If we're talking about games we can play today, how are fans supposed to play GX right now outside of pirating or paying out the butt for it?
@@denimchicken104 Bayonetta 2 has easier controls, and is generally more liked than the original and yet is considered by fans to have less depth than Bayonetta 1. F-Zero X/GX are in the same boat. Its not debatable. X has tighter controls.

really struggling to maneuver precisely with the pro controller/joycons. this is one game where input lag and slightly different stick sensitivity really make a difference, sadly.
For a fifth gen console game the vehicles are actually not low poly, and the tracks themselves are actually pretty high poly for a fifth gen game. Look at the polygon count on Playstation or Saturn games. The cars would usually have very, very few polygons. Most fifth gen console racing games wouldn't even come close to the number of polygons per second they're pushing, even including a lot of other N64 games, I think. The N64's rendering power was actually by far the best among the fifth gen consoles aside from the fact that it just couldn't handle a lot of texture detail, due to it being handicapped by the design and latency of the memory system that was used, and also because there just wasn't a lot of storage space for storing textures on the cartridges anyway.
So what you’re saying is this version has the same control stick dead zone the Wii U port did? They actually had to patch a Virtual Console game to fix it
Man I want a new F-Zero, Nintendo seems too not like making skill based games anymore I've grown sick of Mario kart without F-Zero existing alongside it. Kina sick of Mario kart generally. All I have is Redout, Fast RMX, Ballistic NG, and some others but it's not F-Zero...
I think F zero would be the perfect way for Nintendo to make a battle royale game. Imagine you racing against 29 other folks that would be awesome. I’m also sure they could make it so you could make your own ship with micro transactions etc.
I got it on Wii U and I’m loving it! I’ve always wanted GX but it’s absurdly expensive so finally being able to play a 3D F-Zero game and it runs at a buttery 60fps is amazing! I will one day get my hands on GX…I hope
You forget that this game was made for the n64 controller. Bouncing and killing vehicles worked really nice with that controller, but doesn't work well on a more traditional controller.
This is a great treat racing game, and yes it needs some skills to play it so you don't lose grip that ease ;) Great review! Great game! Hope they add the expansion pack some they 🤞
You clearly hasn't played the game very much, it takes time to control the traction, also stop sucking GX so much, it was great game and so is X and considering they are from different times its pretty unfair to say GX is or looks better, they both are pretty great in their own way.
9:40 this is why I think F-Zero X is almost unplayable on Switch, sadly. I'm a big fan of the game on 64 and dare I say I could be quite competitive at it, but the controls on the Switch are nowhere how they felt on the original because of one major difference: the stick. On 64 the stick had a lot of tension and you had to press it quite a bit to move it compared to very smooth more modern sticks. In F-Zero X you often have to slightly push the stick only 10 degrees to a direction which is quite impossible on any stick which is not the 64 or the Xbox elite because they all lack tension. Sadly there is no way to fix that unless you buy an adapter or one of these pricy 64 repro controllers Nintendo has been re-releasing.
My only criticism of this video is its constant comparisons between X and GX. Of course GX is the superior of the two - it was a polished sequel to an older game on an older console with a formula that just needed a bit of tweaking to reach perfection. But X still holds up great and feels as tight as ever.
Yeah, we are getting old… I remember getting this when I was about 9 or 10 years old. But since it’s not the best multiplayer game compared to games like Mario Kart 64 I actually ended up trading it in more than once, but always ended up buying it back when I inevitably started to miss it again. Well that, and because it was always one of the cheapest N64 games you could buy pre-owned lol
playing F zero x requires a technique that is unique to two kinds of players me, I like to be in control and tend to not slide by smashing the A button to gain control at high speeds and crossing turnpikes others would slide like hell and go at serious speeds and take more dangerous ways to gain that speed. somehow the game is built solid like a rock, supporting many ways to play it from many machines to choose from as they all affect your unique technique. its stupid fun, and for some reason makes me like it more than GX despite how gorgeous and challenging it is.
@@seanlyons161 Probably because I didn’t hook up an N64, buy an original copy of the game, and meticulously compare them side by side. The game is still blazing fast and has sharp controls. I’ve had no issues playing the game and winning. It’s quite fun.
@@seanlyons161 Fair enough, and sorry to hear it. I just can't relate in this case because I've been enjoying the game so much. Honestly, I played through OoT completely and have been playing a lot of the other NSO Expansion games as well without any issues.
Nintendo just needs to makes an F zero game that remasters favorited tracks from the entire series, like Mario kart does it. 3:05 also he just murdered captain falcon with no mercy LMAO
There is no "Desicion" the real deal is select max speed at the top, Boost all the way and don't crash, thats the way to play F Zero X "specially on the higher dificulty". 🙂
It’s upsetting that new players will think this is how the game is supposed to play. Most of them will never play the original cart with the proper controller, and that sucks.
7:18 This is wrong. I came across this info while researching multiple time and it’s just flat out false. I came across a couple of UA-cam videos a while back of someone playing the X-Cup and the CPU’s dying to the jank track layout. A day later, I play F-Zero X’s X-Cup and I came across the exact same track in one of the videos I watched. I recorded a video showing that their are no more CPU’s on the course anymore so If you guys don’t believe me just DM me on IG. That being said, because these stages are coded into the game it raises the question “Are these tracks actually randomly generated, or were they made normally but the design of them didn’t have as much care as the main Grand Prix tracks?”. IDK where the main source came from, but if anyone knows please tell me here or on IG.
Funny lol I just watched some other reviews and they loved it. I guess it's all preference. Personally its fun I think but never been an F-zero fan in general.
I think I still have this game on my Wii U from using the Wii virtual console (you got access to the virtual console and the normal Wii U eshop this way). I'll probably just use that one instead.
The framerate issues make it borderline unplayable for me. And if youre an Fzero veteran like me, you HAVE to use the N64 controller over the switch ones because the analog sticks are too sensitive.
How much of this “bad emulation” is the N64 being jank but the rose tinted glasses aren’t letting some of y’all see that? I mean every game I’ve played on this thing so far reminded me as to why I didn’t care for this generation.
The game was created with n64 controller dead zone in mind. The newer controllers are much more sensitive and cuts the ship harder. Have you used your n64 controller with it? Curious to see if dead zones on those are as retro as advertised lol.
@@GameXplain dead zone still might be off on in the redesign. I am noticing the same thing. My 64 is in moth balls or I would compare it. If you have a chance maybe you could bust out your n64 play it there and do a comparison.
@@Tri4ce1 I've actually been replaying it on 64 the past few days, though I didn't do a direct comparison, so it's possible there's some slight difference. Though it's also hard to say, because as you mentioned, my N64 sticks are certainly showing their age a bit hahaha
Nintendo should make an effort to properly address sensitivity when emulating this game. It's crucial. When X first came out on Wii U it was literally unplayable. They half-solved it after getting backlash. Disgraceful. Players hold F-Zero X in very high regard, Nintendo clearly does not.

I definitely couldn’t afford it nowadays lol
Imo X is what encompasses the feel of F-Zero the most, especially the soundtrack and effects in general
@@Teknoman I always especially loved the backgrounds.
Yes, the overall geometry and textures are super simpleb. But those background skyboxes with their mix of retrofuturism and high fantasy, set against purple and orange skies, make them look like environments from old heavy metal album covers.
Now do retro reviews of all the f-zero games. Come on Andre you know you wanna do it.
10:48, F-Zero 99...oh yeah.
How to describe F-ZERO to friends: "Think Mario Kart, but at double speed, 30 racers, no respawns, and no RNG B.S. to screw you over."
Dude. Gx's story mode is the hardest game I've ever played.
I named my channel after this game... no lie, lol.
No mention of the controls with the pro-controlle or joycons?
I hope (but doubt) that Nintendo eventually adds the F-ZERO X Expansion Kit to the Switch port. I personally would love to see kind of insane tracks people could create with it, especially considering that the Track Editor was said to be practically the same tools that the developers used.
“Release it now, fix it later” really seems like Nintendo’s tactic for releasing games on the Switch, and it’s getting old real quick. Why not just wait a few extra weeks/months to release a game to ensure it has all of its content and it works properly before releasing it?
It's not only Nintendo, nowadays every Big Companies are releasing buggy games and fixing it later . A perfect example would be Elden Ring etc..
Ehhh you'll buy it anyway

When I played F-Zero X on NSO, I was impressed of this game and I don’t see the problem that it’s worse just the performance or anything else
It’s just a great game 9/10
Honestly when I play games on that expansion pack I see no problems myself as well.
The series really needs a remake compilation since it is discontinued and have no sequels by now
I mean, they could just bring that or adapt the arcade one.
I'd take a sequel to FAST RMX at this point. But that's probably not going to happen either. :(
As someone who has never played an F-Zero game (unless you count the Nintendo land one) I honestly can say this is one of my favourite racing games of all time
You're turning incorrectly. You have to hold down the drift triggers (L or R) while turning
Love how you advocate for improvement like The N64 SD VER. I just wish you'd equally advocate for an achievement system on the Switch too...
why are you not holding Z or R when turning? anyways, yeah, the framedrops are noticeable, that sucks
They couldve at least added the 64DD expansion...
Nintendo: You'll take this Rom and like it! *slaps you across the face*
That never gonna happen
The 64DD (Disk Drive) was a failure add-on in japan

Ah, yes. I know F-Zero X very well from back in the old days, and played it tons. (However, I've hardly ever played GX, so I don't know that one nearly as well.)
(3:57) One time, I challenged myself to come in last place out of all survivors in each race, and still placed 1st overall in the end, because of the sheer amount of KOs I was able to cause to the competition.
3:07 I love how he just casually pushes the blue jet out of the track.
Gran Turismo is amazing and I'm sure Forza is as well...BUT..the gameplay and incredibly tight controls make F-ZERO X the best racing game ever
I got it on the Wii U Virtual console
It’s better on the WiiU
It's better on there. It feels like it controls better on there.
Shame the control of the craft isn’t the same as n64. I done about two tracks and noticed it straight away. Back into original hardware to play this I guess.
I hope the controls get polish in the future. That steering issue really bothers me 😢
This remaining dude from GameXplain has no clue.
It'll come to you without any control "fixes"
There could be only one reason, that might make my comment irrelevant though: ...
The controls in this game are pretty much perfect, and it seems like you're just...not very familiar with them. It doesn't make them bad or cumbersome.
@@denimchicken104 its pressing a button twice in a row...
@@denimchicken104 It really is that simple, and the timing is not strict.

I remember really enjoying this game.
The N64DD content would make for a great SP edition of F-Zero X later down the line.
I never now what a SP version means
Can you explain please?
I remember being 4yrs old when I broke my femur bone and F zero was in the hospital for months and this was one of the first video games I ever played. Still a cool game
Solid review. Well done!
really struggling to maneuver precisely with the pro controller/joycons. this is one game where input lag and slightly different stick sensitivity really make a difference, sadly.
They actually had to patch a Virtual Console game to fix it
The review didn't say that at all and you just made me waste my time watching the whole video just to check
It's my favorite Fzero game
What do you mean 'worse'?
Give us a 30 player multiplayer online F Zero Nintendo!! And let the FAST RACING devs handle it!
dude ive been wanting this for the longest.
This is a great treat racing game, and yes it needs some skills to play it so you don't lose grip that ease ;) Great review! Great game! Hope they add the expansion pack some they 🤞
N64 emulation was never that good, even an a powerful PC it never matches the hardware properly
Andre I love the retro reviews! Please do more!

You clearly hasn't played the game very much, it takes time to control the traction, also stop sucking GX so much, it was great game and so is X and considering they are from different times its pretty unfair to say GX is or looks better, they both are pretty great in their own way.
While I do like both, I've always preferred X over GX.
I never notice the frame rate dipping…! But then again, I’m not very sensitive to that 🤷🏻♂️
Where's F Zero AX and GX by the way nintendo?
they need to include a manual or button layouts, i couldn't figure out the attack methods. i knew they were there but.....
I really hope you review RedOut 2 when it released. I saw some new gameplay videos that make it my most wanted game of the year.
My only criticism of this video is its constant comparisons between X and GX. Of course GX is the superior of the two - it was a polished sequel to an older game on an older console with a formula that just needed a bit of tweaking to reach perfection. But X still holds up great and feels as tight as ever.
24 years???? holy fuck I'm old, because I played it on launch, even got a Japanese import version of the game!
I was not even 1 when this game was released.
I m 24 now
Yeah, we are getting old…
I remember getting this when I was about 9 or 10 years old. But since it’s not the best multiplayer game compared to games like Mario Kart 64 I actually ended up trading it in more than once, but always ended up buying it back when I inevitably started to miss it again.
Well that, and because it was always one of the cheapest N64 games you could buy pre-owned lol
playing F zero x requires a technique that is unique to two kinds of players
me, I like to be in control and tend to not slide by smashing the A button to gain control at high speeds and crossing turnpikes
others would slide like hell and go at serious speeds and take more dangerous ways to gain that speed.
somehow the game is built solid like a rock, supporting many ways to play it from many machines to choose from as they all affect your unique technique.
its stupid fun, and for some reason makes me like it more than GX despite how gorgeous and challenging it is.
I need a F-Zero Remake right now
F- Zero X is the best racing game ever. GX had better graphics but that’s about it. The tracks felt less challenging

Okay… I might be wrong!
Funny lol I just watched some other reviews and they loved it. I guess it's all preference. Personally its fun I think but never been an F-zero fan in general.
Barren environments are an unfair criticism for X. It was necesarry to make it possible to run a steady 60 fps on a cartridge game from the late 90s.
I thought you going to say it’s bad on switch, but I guess you were just actually pointing out the minor flaws and still giving a thumbs up
Yeah that’s just about the worst kind of clickbait right there.😑
And so the wait for a new F-Zero title continues...
Real Nintendo fans don't want new games. I thought that was obvious by now
Indeed
Are the Switch versions generally a downgrade from the Wii VC versions? I'm surprised they didn't just use those.
I think I still have this game on my Wii U from using the Wii virtual console (you got access to the virtual console and the normal Wii U eshop this way).
I'll probably just use that one instead.
Okay, I know you don't like it on the Switch, but I don't have an N64, but I do have the switch. And honestly, it's not that bad to me.
If they put superman 64 on the store everyone would play it
The framerate issues make it borderline unplayable for me. And if youre an Fzero veteran like me, you HAVE to use the N64 controller over the switch ones because the analog sticks are too sensitive.
F-Zero X was just too fast for the subpar emulation service
How much of this “bad emulation” is the N64 being jank but the rose tinted glasses aren’t letting some of y’all see that? I mean every game I’ve played on this thing so far reminded me as to why I didn’t care for this generation.
The emulation of F-Zero X is literally flawless on the NSO.
Too bad your brain runs on clickbait.
Choose the dinosaur guy if losing grip is an issue.
That gameplay is super aggressive, what a terrifying driver.
Nintendo switch online at it's worst yet again lol
Jesus, I just realized there are people old enough to vote who weren't born when the last F-Zero game was released.
The game was created with n64 controller dead zone in mind. The newer controllers are much more sensitive and cuts the ship harder.
Have you used your n64 controller with it? Curious to see if dead zones on those are as retro as advertised lol.
I only used the N64 NSO controller! It felt pretty spot-on to me
@@GameXplain dead zone still might be off on in the redesign.
