As some of you may know, I went backpacking in Scotland to celebrate my birthday and what an epic one I had on Suilven!
Originating from the Norse word for pillar, Suilven may only be 731 metres high but because the hike pretty much starts at sea level, this makes it a fairly long hike on undulating terrain. It involves minor scrambling. However, the final rocky slope to reach the true summit is quite exposed, requiring some care, but you’ll be rewarded with remarkable views of Assynt’s scattered hills and lochans. And if you choose to camp atop like us, I hope you get treated to a stunning sunset and sunrise, just as we did.
But most importantly, don’t forget to have a break & enjoy the trail! Go for a wild swim, a waterfall dip, a paddle..or even take a nap if you must. More often than not, the best part is the journey to the top.

@@FunsizedEarthling I have, although it was a long time ago. I'm very keen to go back sometime soon. As a carer I can only do one nighters at the moment (2nights at a push) occasionally. I've been to the Galloway forest a few times this year so I'm hoping to head north next time. This video really whets the appetite 👍

Honestly Mari, that has to be right up there as one of the most purely enjoyable videos I've watched on UA-cam, amazing stuff! A real sense of "having fun", from the splashing about in the water to the camp on Suilven. Genuinely loved that - makes me want to go back and do Suilven again right now! 😄

Hey Mari . Fantastic video, loved everything about it the views the laughter , drone footage just perfect . I just done the Cairngorms 4000s with a one night camp can highly recommend it but it is tough i maybe should have done 2 nights camps ATB Nigel.

Well I for one thought that was epic! Happy Birthday and a great way to celebrate it, what a lunch with a view! Shame about the birthday cake but the view from your tents, together with the sunset must have made up for that. hard to believe the day could be beaten but wow, what a morning but unfortunately, my hair water flick days are well behind me......food looked amazing but the star of the show was a toss up between Achmelvick Bay (you sure that was the UK) and the Hidden waterfall, both gorgeous and defo EPIC! And just like someone in the office who brings cakes in for everyone else on their big day, you've treated us all to this stunner of a vid, which is special even by your high standards. My tiny mind can't quite grasp that location though... I knew of it (even seen that film 'Edie' about it) but you've captured it amazingly here between you both. I was very grateful for the conditions we had throughout this trip! And yes, I agree...sometimes it’s nice to just take it slow and really soak in everything the trail has to offer. Sadly, not everyone is blessed with as much time as we did on this trip. Hopefully they get days where they won’t have to rush.

@@FunsizedEarthling I'm very well thanks Mari although I haven't been camping much over summer to be honest - I realise it's my least favourite season for it for lots of reasons. I did manage a swift overnighter in Wales last week though, and posted a vid a few days back - my first in months! I think I'll get my mojo back a bit come September. 🙂

That was a truly epic wild camp, the views you had up there were amazing. I camped at the end of Loch Veyatie on a canoe trip recently and Suilven was always looming in the back ground, it looked like a right beast to climb so hats off to ya for doing it! 👍

I strongly encourage you to go and camp up there if you still haven’t made up your mind. 😁 Make sure you go on a nice day and I recommend going on a weekday as it can get busy on a weekend. We met quite a number of people going up there for a camp on a Friday when we were hiking back down. ☺️ But if you don’t mind company then go when you please. ⛰⛺️

@@FunsizedEarthling thanks Mari, it's John btw. Yes, I've visited that area, although not as extensively as you did - your vlogs really show it off well. I like the really quiet spots, albeit can feel a bit eerie sometimes. We don't always get the best weather in the uk do we? but we have some of the finest scenery.

At 6 minutes 54 seconds in, that view was lovely of the lochs, though you say you're unfit, I think you did well to get up them hills, the waterfall you bathed in looked great to. When I go to Scotland i always go to the Isle of Skye.
I am based in Yorkshire so i am not too far away from the Dales, Peak District, North Yorkshire Moors and the Lake District is only a couple of hours drive.
Brought back some good memories this. You went the same way we did about 6 years ago now. The bog of doom nearly finished us 😂 we camped at the lochan then just walked up. So that’s on my list to actually camp up there. Perfect conditions and fantastic filming including drone footage. What an adventure. Fabulous 👏🏻 👏🏻 👍

I just like to mix it up a bit so that I can use all of my tents. 😁 I recently bought a Lanshan 1 in different colour, I have not used it yet. I actually bought a Lanshan (red, 1 person, double layer) a few years ago but only got to use it a couple of times before Covid struck. I remember that I was still trying to perfect my pitch back then so I'm eager (if not a little anxious) to get back out and have another go.
