I was part of the choir for this show, it was an amazing experience. Dave Grohl was on drums for all the rehearsals, so it was a surprise to everyone when Jason Bonham came out for the final performance. Also, this video has footage both from the dress rehearsal, and the live performance. After the show was over, Stephen Colbert came up to me and 2 of my fellow choir members to tell us that we did a great job, it was surreal.
Choral arrangement was done by Rob Mathes, and our chorus director is Joyce Garrett. Our choir was also at Obama's inauguration, Bruce Springsteen Super Bowl, and every Christmas in Washington performance on TNT, until it was canceled.
We were drawn from a lot of different sources around the DC area, including some former High School choirs after we all graduated, some church choirs, and eventually some University of Maryland choir members.
We rehearsed every day including weekends for about 3 weeks for this, and for most of our performances

Well, also he's used to seeing the song butchered. Every newbie band thinks they can cover it, and it's literally become a cliche that they ALL suck. Here, possibly for the first time, he's seeing it done right. I think the only other performer I've seen do a good cover job with it is, of all people, Dolly Parton and her band. Who do a pretty different version (which actually works).

I've seen a lot of people do reaction videos to this song, and I swear 95% ask "what's the deal with the hat?" It was definitely one of Bonzo's things. When John Bonham died, Heart recorded a live version of "Rock & Roll" and dedicated it to his memory, so Heart has always held Zeppelin close to their...well, hearts. The greatest moment to me in the concert film "The Song Remains the Same" is during Bonham's "fantasy segment." Everybody does weird stuff, and then you have Bonzo, whose "fantasy segment" was about hanging out with his family and driving fast cars. During one of the clips of his family is a four year-old Jason Bonham jamming on a miniature orange Plexiglass Ludwig kit, just like his dad. I think he did something tricky, spun one of his sticks, and blew a bubble, all without missing a beat. He has NEVER gotten a gig because he's John Bonham's son. The man is a hell of a drummer, and I'm glad they got him to play on this awesome tribute. (I tear-up when I see Robert Plant tear-up, because I know how much he dislikes this song; or when the second choir comes in. Ye gods.)

@@williamjclinton1 Ann Wilson has the greatest female voice to front a hard rock band. I love Collen Spiteri (sp?) of the group Texas, whose version of "Suspicious Minds" kills, but while she has raw power closer to Ann's than most singers, she can't touch the range, control, and pure clarion magic of Ann Wilson. And Nancy can sing too. She sang on "These Dreams" back in 86, I think, and she was just getting over bronchitis or something, so every time she reached for the highest note "se-COND of the night," her voice cracked. She was frustrated and wanted to redo it another day. The producers and engineer and her sister were all saying, "NOOOOO!!! That sounds great!!!! You couldn't duplicate that if you tried! LEAVE IT!!!" I think it hit #1.

@@Studio44B Damn I didn’t know that. The truth is this shouldn’t be shocking to anyone who’s been around or followed Heart for a while because they grew up listening to and learning Zeppelin covers and could do them, when they first started out, very well, but Heart was also a band that wrote their own original songs too. So they did both very well.
Edit: Greta Van Fleet needs to just follow what Heart did and use it their own way. They’re all talented as hell anyway.

Even before the fame, Ann had this amazing voice. Her ability to blend softness with power is natural and the strength of her voice is truly wondrous. I am just old enough to have been blessed with seeing the original lineup of Heart on many occasions, from free concerts in the city parks to playing at roller skating rinks to even one magical night when the band played one of my high school dances. I worked at a local club at the time and had seen hundreds of bands, but there was something special about Heart and their unique sound. Not only the amazingly talented Wilson sisters, but their blend of 60s/70s Rock with Led Zeppelin blues-based Rock with a Gypsy feel.
When I first saw this clip, it was no surprise at all that Ann and Nancy nailed the song, as no other could. Normally, I can't stand covers, but once in a while I hear one that just demands attention.

Heart is awesome, I’ve liked them since I was a kid in the 80’s. The part that grabbed me though here was seeing Jason at the drums with his eyes closed and everyone who saw that knew he was thinking of his dad. That hit me pretty good. The performance then just ramped up and the whole package of Nancy opening all by herself and not missing a note, Ann killing it as always, Jason on drums and all the background elements. And the best part being the men themselves being honored hopefully with John looking on as well, with the President and numerous other performers watching too. Just awesome, awesome, awesome!!!

It is even one of John's drumkits and his hat - which headgear the choir at the end emulate in tribute to him.
Jason was invited to sit with them in the audience to represent his father but had told them he had a previous engagement so couldn't be with them in the audience - technically true, as his engagement was onstage, and a surprise to the band. Robert Plant is his godfather. When he glances upwards at the final "to heaven" it gets me every time.
