The drummer was Jason Bonham, the son of deceased Led Zep drummer John Bonham. The derby was worn to pay homage to his father.
And Robert Plant said he got emotional at the end because he was thinking about John.
Wasn't he playing on John's kit too?
Plus they guys had no idea that Jason was going to be there and play. Plus wearing the hat in honor of his father.
@@prestigeworldwide5239 Yes, it was his fathers' drum kit.
@@thomaswhite7783 you can see at times Jason was struglging to hot it together would be so emtional for him
The Wilson sister's version of this all time rock class is IMHO absolutely THE BEST cover of this song I have ever heard. PERIOD!!! The whole production TOTALLY KILLED it!!!!
when a "Cover" that exceeds the Original,,, And the Actual Band realizes the truth,,, Heart and the Wilson Sisters "Nailed IT"
kinda like dio, yngwie dream on @@carlrice6989
IN order to argue with your point I would have to point to a band who did a better cover of that song. I just can't do it. So I agree, Heart knocked it out of the park. And they did it under tremendous pressure, they had 1 chance to do it right or blow it completely. It as live. There was no 'do over' option. Succeed or fail were the options. They brought it all and made this a cover we watch over and over again. Love the sisters and their contribution to Rock . This was just one more example of the talent they bring, when facing a live audience. Bravo.
Bro, it does not exceed the OG by any means. Stop drinking copium. It was truly one of the best covers. But I would not like to listen to the orchestra and choir every time I listen to this song. The original is truly irreplicable.@@carlrice6989
Agreed.
Robert Plant said in an interview that he doesn't like any covers of "Stairway", but after Heart he said "They did a good job" and was pleased. The TEARS were, because he was thinking of Bonzo, when he saw Jason playing...and he cried that his old friend wasn't present
A good job? More like a fantastic job!
There are few that can sing and match Plant. Then again, there are few that can match Ann.
I saw that interview. I'm not so sure he was being totally honest there. I think Jason being there was a huge part of it, but when that last curtain raised and the full choir joined in there was a visible reaction. However, that's okay. It's Plant. He can be guarded about it if he wants. As you said he doesn't like any covers of Stairway, so for him to say "they did a good job" is enough.
And there you go, Great comment🍻
He was not positive about it when mentioning on his podcast; he was very emotional about Jason Bonham standing in for his father, Plant's lost friend and running buddy.
Ann was 62 when they did this tribute, and her sister Nancy was 58. Ann’s voice, like most singers has changed over the decades. This was the Kennedy Center Honors, a very important honor for people in entertainment who have made a significant contribution to the arts. The drummer is Jason Bonham, the son of Led Zeppelin’s original drummer who passed away when Jason was very young. He’s wearing his dad’s signature bowler hat and playing his drum kit.
You've just witnessed "ROCK LEGENDS PERFORM IN FRONT OF ROCK GOD'S" and performing one of their greatest hits of all time 🤘
One of the best live performances in music history along with Queen's Live Aid.
Ann Wilson was 62 years old when this tribute was recorded in 2012. What a set of pipes!
Ann Wilson still has one of the best Rock voices out there. True legend.
I remember an episode of American Idol. Contestant did a (pretty good) rendition of Alone. Randy Jackson said that you had to have real guts to set yourself up for a comparison with Ann Wilson. Truer words never spoken.
Jason Bonham is the son the late John Bonham John Bonham taught his son Jason to play the drums at a very young age and not only did Jason Bonham was wearing his dad's hat but he also was playing his dad's drums. The sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson did a great job, but the the sisters,Jason Bonham and the rest of Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones had dinner with the Obamas at the white house, and the Obamas said that they were worried about it because of their wild ways, but they said they stayed up all night having a great time and everyone was very polite. They were shocked lol 😆.much love to you and your family 💕. Oh and by the way they all stayed the night in the white house and made plans to see each other again how cool 😎is that.much love 💘💙❤Brandi Modrak 💕💙

Hart is my favourite female rock band of all times I can’t think of any others off the top of my head👍🏽👏👏😍😍😍🤩🤩they did an excellent tribute to led zeppelin and right in front of Robert Plant and Jimmy Page bravo 👏 the best 👏👏❤️❤️
Yes she is love Ann Wilson voices
I lose it every time I see Jason looking up in the sky to his dad.
Robert Plant is so focused because he is thinking of his long time best friend John Bonzo Bonham while watching John’s son playing the drums and doing his father proud. Jason Bonham is a beast in his own right. Also you will notice Robert loose it when the large choir comes out all wearing the bowler hat Bonzo made famous. All a tribute to one of the greatest drummers of all time. RIP Mr. John Bonham.
The greatest of all time. Bonzo
@@jamestoddjackson9655 Absolutely the greatest. He was an inspiration to those who came after him, example Neal Pert.
Robert, too many words in your comment there old mate. You need to remove the "one of the" so that it reads "All a tribute to the greatest drummer of all time" SHEESH. "One of the"? John Henry Bonham was THE greatest drummer to ever draw breath.
@@sopwithpuppy I sit corrected kind sir. You are right, he was, is. . . . . The absolute BEST! Thank you for getting me straight. Rob
@@robertstrohm2412 When you see Peart drumming, you don't want to get into all that competition. Both legends who went on their stairway to heaven.
I don't know why this performance always makes me so emotional. Watching Robert Plant watch this is like watching a man's life flash before his eyes, and it ends with a smile. He looks so grateful and humbled. It's really beautiful.
Exactly
Because it taps into the raw emotion we as humans cling to when we need some solace.
When a piece of music is performed in such a way that it turns you into an emotional puddle from the start, you know you've just found and experienced your true self.
His little boy had died around the time they wrote stairway he was only 5. I bumped I to him on a Scottish island with my son and he was lovely so humble.
This wasn't a cover of the song, it was a tribute to the band. Ann and Nancy started in the 70's and Led Zeppelin was their inspiration. When this aired in 2012, Ann was 62 yrs old, she hasn't skipped a beat since her 20's. Rock Legends honoring, Rock Gods.⚡⚡🌟✨
Same thing...it's a cover of the song also...
Even more special is that Jason Bonham was the drummer for this song and his father, John Bonham, was the original drummer of led Zeppelin who' has passed away.
It’s a cover
Heart when they were not yet big and were playing bars and small festivals in Western Canada, did a lot of Zeppelin covers, coz Ann could sing them so well!
@@michaelasay8587, so what?!
Stairway is the most iconic song ever written by any band in history ! I just love how happy Jimmy Page looked watching that, so excited like a young man again , maybe even a little kid !
She said before going on stage... we are like skydivers jumping from a plane. There's no turning back now...
There will never be a better live version of this song. They absolutely crushed this.
It was a surprise to everyone that Jason was going to play drums on this song, apparently he even took out his dad's old derby hat for the performance. What is extra special is that John Bonham was Robert Plants best friend and after his passing the band was never the same. Plant was moved to tears this evening seeing his best friend and band mates son playing on stage with his dads hat on. Near the end of the song Jason looked up as to say Dad this was for you! Very powerful evening for all who witnessed this. Heart is a Class Act! GREAT REACTION GUYS.
Found out not long ago that Jason was playing on his dad's old kit as well. Triple tribute to John.
Bowler hat
Yeah, you can even see that Robert Plant actually tells Jimmy Page "He's back.". Definitely an incredible performance for many reasons.
Impressive performance under tremendous pressure. A standing ovation by the surviving original band members says it all.
Welp, it’s been said that the reason Ann Wilson wore the long coat while performing was to hide the balls that she had to have had to sing this in front of Robert Plant lol My favorite performance of all times!🖤
LOL
She was ill. They said she was fighting the flu. Didn't even come to town until the day before the concert.
Ann Wilson put on a Master's Class and is a TRUE artist... She owned that moment..
An amazing tribute to the greatest band to ever exist. Heart killed this.
Thanks Jeane Claud Van Dam
@@grantmourning189 ANYTIME.
Zeppelin is great but no one tops the Beatles
@@jakeschwartz6248 there is an old saying.. zep could play the beatles music.. the beatles could not play zep. Beatles are better songwriters, but worse musicians imo.
I remembered this Honor to Led Zeppelin. What an amazing rendition. Heart killed it. And 👏👏👏👏 to John’s son on the drums. You see the emotions on Led Zeppelin’s face. Beautiful.
Imagine being that guitarist looking over knowing Ann Wilson is going to just galaxy brain the vocal parts and then realizing you gotta play Jimmy Page's solo in front of Jimmy Page.
Lol I love this comment.
when i was watching this live i said out loud there is no way he touches the solo....after he finished it i was shockingly impressed...he almost went note for note with the original recording.
I imagine he was realizing that long before he hit the stage. I imagine the nerves were absolutely killer, but this guy is obviously a pro, and he nailed it. He played it right without exactly copying it, did it with his own style rather than trying to copy Page's style, and pulled it off without a hitch. Very impressive. Wish I were half as good.
Heart and Zep have been friends for over 40 years. Ann & Nancy were big fan girls of Zep growing up(way before they started Heart)
'Galaxy brain'.....you just invented a whole new verb-phrase. 👍
I cry every time I see this performance. They are such badasses, both Heart and Zeppelin.
It does it to me every single time I watch this performance too. Powerful stuff.
Me too
If i wasn’t so cold i would cry too but damn near close
The Kennedy Center Honors is an annual honor given to those in the performing arts for their lifetime of contributions to American culture. Led Zepplin was being honored for their music
Except when Trump was in office of course. Didn't you notice? He can't stand seeing anyone else in the limelight, getting attention. A true mental case
@@fidge54 you seem to be an expert in the field... 🙄
@@fidge54 imagine still being butthurt, even though Brandon is in office. Pathetic. Let's Go, Brandon.
@@fidge54 Exactly. No Class America ruled the last 4 years.
Kennedy Center Honors, has some fantastic performances. Aretha Franklin honoring the great song writer and singer Carol King. Fantastic best performance by Aretha.
Adam Lambert honors the great Cher....Wow, Cher was Impressed
Ann’s voice is so powerful it smacks you in the face and Nancy doesn’t get enough credit for her guitar work. These ladies are amazing!!
Imagine performing this in front of the band who created it and performing it to this amazing level. Jason Bonham, the son of John Bonham who was LZ's drummer, plays the drums on this performance.
John Bonham the goat or Neil Peart?
Yeah, you know, no pressure or anything.
@@tjhunger5656 That's a tough one. They're both in the conversation for sure. But their styles are different enough that I'd be hard pressed to choose either of them. Also Terry Bozzio is in the conversation as well.. He is more skewed toward Jazz . His work with Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, and Missing Persons is outstanding.
I would agree Terry Bozzio is very entertaining and innovative but so is John Bonham plus John Bonham's had a greater influence on popular music. And Neil the professor Peart was such a tactical beast I'm not sure if I could make the ultimate call . Plus I'm not too familiar with Terry Bozzio other than knowing that he played for Zappa and missing person. But if we're really talking incomparable let's not exclude Danny Carey with his polyrhythm style
@@tjhunger5656 Danny Carey. ;-)
I love the looks that Zep give each other when the choir comes in. It's like, "A choir??? They got a choir? Why didn't we get a choir? We got our own plane each, why didn't we think of a choir?" 😆😆😆
Or maybe they were thinking "They need a choir and a cast of thousands to pull off what we could do with just the four of us!"
The choir were wearing bowlers in honor of Bonzo, Don't know about Jimmy and John Paul, but Robert was in tears that his friend was honored in such a manner. Bonham and Plant were very close friends before Led Zeppelin, and John was the only one that showed for the funeral of Robert's son.
hahahahah great
@grahamkey8496 They didn't need any help. They did a pretty good job the four of them...
Steven Tyler ( Abby Road Medley) Kenedy Center Honors Paul McCartney 2010
Also Epic. A must reaction!!
Fun fact...the drummer was Jason Bonham (son of the deceased John Bonham, as I am sure many have already told you). The surviving members of Led Zeppelin invited him to attend the gala with them but he told them he couldn't because he had a prior commitment. They were totally shocked to see him on the drums on this song.
Heart are the only band who Led Zeppelin gave their blessing to, to perform any song of theirs, anywhere, any time.
Here, we can see why.
My god, Jason Bonham. Talk about filling his father's shoes. I've never heard anyone do Stairway justice like that since his father passed. Wow. What a job.
Have you watched The whole two hour concert from Celebration Day 2007 with Jason on drums? A nearly flawless performance by all concerned, and Jason was channeling his dad that night. Outstanding concert. Watch it if you haven’t.
The entire performance was an event to behold, but I felt the strings and the choir took it to a whole new level.............. and Ann's voice at 62 years of age, MY GOODNESS! Jason on drums was humbling to the point of tears. BEST TRIBUTE I HAVE EVER WITTNESSED IN 65 YEARS OF LIFE.
Incredible
62? She looks (and sounds) much much younger
Strings and choir were great but I promise you, most people would not listen to the orchestral version of this song many times.
I just want to point out, that Ann Wilson was 62 when she sang this. That just is amazing to me.
Stairway To Heaven has consistently been voted the greatest rock and roll song of all time.
Best cover of any song ever. Imagine the pressure of performing one of the most iconic songs ever, in front of the original band members and the President. Wow!
You need balls of diamonds 💎to handle that pressure. Greatest cover ever.
Top two covers... Hendrix doing watchtower gets a vote.
I think TOOL's cover of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" definitely a contender for the top spot :)
Not a cover... a homage!
Heart does at least one Led Zeppelin song at almost every concert they preform. This is true talent, not a wrong note or key. Playing live, It’s something that classic rock bands excel at.
I'm old enough to have enjoyed Zep starting in 87 or so. But it was CW that Ann Wilson was the female Robert Plant long before Heart had any notable covers recorded. Another great Brad & Lex joint. This pair gold pyramid cap on the music reaction genre.
I saw them at the Gorge Amphitheatre and they played The Battle of Evermore.
@@gregchavez1534 "long before Heart had any notable covers recorded..." Huh? Heart released original material. Their first big hits "Magic Man" & "Crazy On You" (from their 1975 "Dreamboat Annie" debut album) were written by Ann & Nancy.
@@mrtalleymon Allow me to rephrase. Long before Heart made a habit of covering LZ *alongside their extensive catalogue of original music*, it was often remarked that Plant and Ann Wilson shared a vocal style.
The band really appreciated this as you could see Plant tearing up at one point. They were on Letterman the next night and said this tribute at the Kennedy Center Honors really touched them because it was so good and that they haven't even been honored like this in their home country England.
Ann Wilson is one of the most incredible rock vocalists of the era. Amazing performance.
This was a Kennedy Center honors performance for Led Zepplin, who you saw watching this in the video. And a truly staggering performance. I have re-watched this video for years. Glad you did a react to it!
Ann brought out the goosebumps for Brad. Always fun when you feel the music. Shout out to the rest of the band, including drummer Jason Bonham, the orchestra, and the choir. They all "murdered" it.
Jason looks to the heavens at the end and his dad is smiling down
One of the best live performances and cover song I have ever heard . Everyone involved in this masterpiece deserves kudos and a special shout out to Ann and Nancy Wilson.
Tribute to Zep. Absolutely the best. Lex, listening to the music and looking at you, wow!!!
Playing "Stairway to Heaven" to the guys that wrote it would, for me as least, be like quoting holy scripture to GOD. If ever I was going to screw up, Don't let it be now.
THE LINCOLN CENTER HONORS. Always wonderful for decades. Every Year.....
This my favorite clip on UA-cam. I go to the long version: Kennedy Center Honors Led Zeppelin. It never fails to move me from within. The communication through the music is off the charts 🎉
“Goosebumps” … exactly, Brad! Every time.
Finally someone who appreciates what they saw in this video! The emotion and passion that poured out of the band, the audience, and the BAND was so beautiful. This video never fails to make me tear up.
Robert Plant was having a moment. He knew what it all meant. An honour indeed.
I get the same reaction I don’t know why it makes me tear up too
I love how Jimmy was the most visibly moved by it but Robert was the first to stand up to applaud
I love seeing Jimmie Page so animated in this video. He truly is a God-like figure in rock history. Also such a HUGE fan of his later work with The Firm.
Gives a whole new meaning to ‘the old guys’ in the balcony. Ahh! Sounds like a Heart ❤️ Attack 🤣🤣! No, it was sublime!
One of the best voices ever in rock n roll, she killed this. By the way, this was in 2012, she was 62 years old then.
Every time I watch it, it’s still the best concert I’ve never been to, in one song! Damn they brought it!
Plants reaction is unbelievable..so powerful. This song means a lot to him
No way..this the biggest one lol
plant hated performing this song and eventually refused to do it anymore. even jpj didn't know exactly why
Goosebumps Brad? Me too. 👏👏👏
Ann killed it and the entire stage was with her. Great reaction video as usual.
You two are a breath of fresh air. You don't over talk the performance
I felt nervous for the guitarist solo!!! Page is considered top 10
Guitarist of all time and that dude was doing a solo for one of the greats !!! Massive props
towards the end of the song when Jason looks up get's me every time. #RIP
One of the best performances ever.
Ann and Nancy: 2 of the ROCKINEST ladies, ever!
This performance will never get old!! Flawless
"Different than Barracuda" Hello! Of course, time flies.
Having to play "That Solo" and ending in front of Jimmy Page, I can't imagine the pressure. There was no doubt Ann Wilson could nail this Epic Cover.
Ann, and Nancy's favorite Band, and Inspiration. They also do covers of Immigrant Song, Battle Of Evermore, and Black Dog, and probably others.
They included a live cover of Rock & Roll on their Greatest Hits / Live combo album from 1980. And Zep were still active then, they toured until late in 1980.
I enjoy it when Brad feels it, not just Lex, ... even goosebumps ! I love this interpretation too, very moving with the choir and the Zep guys totally feeling it
There is a beautiful amphitheater right on the Potomac River, right at the VERY base of ALL of the DC Monuments (Vietnam, WW2, Korea, Lincoln monument) that is called the "Kennedy Center" and in that gorgeous white building (overhanging Rock Creek Pkwy) there's a yearly celebration where INSANLY INFLUENTIAL artists are HONORED by being recognized as Kennedy Recipients' of this life-long achievement to music, culture, theatre, arts and SO SO FUCKING SO SO MUCH more.... this silly little get-together with a rainbow ribbon, is a HUGE achievement for our nation!!! STop here and read that whole damn thing 4x time more, then know that we enjoy, celebrate and hold these talented people SO VERY FUCKING HIGH above the crowd to THANK THEM for their amazing contribution to our lives.... THAT is the Kennedy Center Honors!
Brad was right. It was sign language. Jason Bonham pounded his heart and pointed it to Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant patted his heart and sent it back to Jason. Jason grew up with LZ because his father John was the original drummer for them. Good call Brad!
The most fantastic music performance of the last decade!
What an incredible song! Heart knocked it out the park!
Robert Plant looks like he's holding back tears. Great performance. Great reaction.
I've never watched that through to the end before because I'm not into covers, but that look to the heavens by Jason (Bonham) at the end was very emotional, for him and for me as well
If the Grammys had a "performance of the year" category,..this would no doubt have been the winner that year.
This is a phenomenal cover of a legendary song many wouldn't touch for fear of butchering it.
IT DOESN'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS, FANTASTIC PERFORMANCE. ! ! !
7:47 The look up to Heaven, from Jason, gets me every time.
…and dad saw that it was good. 😎
Amen
The best tribute to best rock band if all time!! They were all so blown away by it… you can tell… Robert was crying missing his best friend John Bonam and watching John’s son playing his drums to honor his late father!!! Sure FIRE!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Heart & Led - Zeppelin are my two favorite bands I’ve been privileged to see Heart 4 different times live and I’ve always left amazed! Ann & Nancy Wilson are incredible musicians and very talented as well Ann can sing her ass off and Nancy can play the guitar better than most guys. If Heart ever comes to your guys neck of the woods make sure and go see them you wouldn’t be disappointed.
The Kennedy Center Honors is a yearly recognition of those who have done great achievements in the world of theater, music, acting, etc...groundbreaking achievements. Sort of a lifetime achievement award like they give out at the Oscars.
Can you imagine playing Jimmy Page's iconic guitar solo in front of him? 🎸😳 Jimmy was loving it & jamming along! It takes a legend to honor legend in my opinion & Ann killed the vocals. Robert looked so touched. John's son, Jason, honoring his Dad by playing his Dad's part was so touching. The bolo hats - another nod to "Bonzo". The PERFECT tribute! ❤🎵✌
Absolutely a stellar performance....A knock your socks off performance....Solid Gold redefined...
How heart stopping it must've been to sing the signature song of the band you idolized your whole career, live in front of them!
One of the greatest all time covers of one of the best rock songs ever❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Ann has been singing this since it came out... and, for me, I prefer her vocals to even Plant's - sacrilege, I know - but I've loved Ann's voice since the 70s, even when she speaks I get the goosebumps!
That entire Kennedy Center Honors show is incredible. Foo Fighters, Lenny Kravits, kid Rock also did songs this show honoring LZ! AND Buddy Guy was honored as well. Check out Beth Harts tribute to Buddy Guy’s I’d Rather Go Blind…. Same event!!! ✌🏼
The Kennedy Honors Show happens every year with the current President in attendance …. Well, maybe not trump.
not so much Kid Rock
Perfection. That choir grabs me every time.
This version was a masterpiece!
Imagine being Robert Plant witnessing your opus being sung to you by Anne Wilson, whilst your God Sun is sitting behind the drums. Mate.. I'm crying for him!
And his son played the drums too, Iconic song!!
Standing ovations from the masters himself and the tears in there eyes when the corus comes up and all wear the melon hat on her tops and he also so proud that the son of de dead drummer bonzo (RIP)sittin on dad's chair and doing a damn good job with daddy's Tools.
I saw Heart in concert, summer 2019, Joan Jett opened. Took my 25 year old daughter. I so hoped they would play this and they did! Not the same without the orchestra and choir, but still phenomenal.
I love that you let the music take you away and not try to overthink it.
Kashmir- Live Celebration Day is a must. John Bonhams son Jason is playing with them. 🔥🤘🎸
Oh, hell yeah
Horrible
a transcending Led Zeppelin moment!
So after Led Zeppelin's drummer John Bonham died the band broke up and never made another album. The guy drumming in this tribute to Led Zeppelin is John Bonham's son Jason Bonham. I think that makes this rendition of Stairway To Heaven that more touching.
I had tickets to they’re concert in Philly when John died and that was all she wrote. At 13 was sooo close to seeing Led Zep perform. Total heartbreak. Love this damn video. Also Epic. A must reaction!!
The best cover song ever! PERIOD!
One of the all-time greatest classic rock songs sung by the absolute greatest female rock singer in musical history.
I’ve been waiting for this!👍🏼❤️
When Ann belted out "too be a rock and not to roll" and Robert Plant (Led Zep's singer) looked on in admiration, bewilderment and tears in his eyes, you know that this was one of the classic vocal deliveries of our time. Such power and precision. She killed it. 100%. The look on Jimmy Page's face right after she said that line is one of admiration and satisfaction.
To see a band that is held in such high esteem for decades look so impressed, speaks volumes. The music of Led Zeppelin will never be copied or maybe never equalled but the sisters Ann and Nancy and the band played their hearts out (pun intended - as they were the main players in the band Heart) and played a legendary performance of the song of all songs.
Three of the great band Led Zeppelin, Robert Plant, Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones being honored at the Kennedy Center!
Shes 62 years old when she did this. Leppelin said they did the best cover by anyone. Plant had tears in his eyes
This is just perfection. Other Kennedy center honors I like are:
Aretha Franklin singing Natural woman for Carol king.
Beth hart and jeff beck I'd rather be a blind girl honoring buddy guy
Yes! I would add to that Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga honoring Sting.
@@TheDivayenta absolutely. Not all honors are great, but some are the best things on the internet

I've seen this performance more times that I can count. Ann Wilson absolutely destroyed it. The whole show included four covers by the Foo Fighters (Rock and Roll), Kid Rock (Ramble On), Lenny Kravitz (Whole Lotta Love) and this one, which was the best of the bunch. They all did well. Kravitz killed it, as well. Jack Black did an excellent and funny intro to the whole thing. Worth checking out one or all of the performances.
Cheers!
