Just in case those unfamiliar with Led Zeppelin are unaware, their Drummer sadly passed away some time ago, his son is playing the drums here. His signature hat was a bowler hat, thus the bowler hats in the choir. Very very classy tribute.
Jason Bonham, son of the late John Henry "Bonzo" Bonham, shares a fateful coincidence with another son of another drummer. Ringo Starr's eldest Zak had been recruited by Oasis to be their concert drummer before Liam and Noel had their full-blown split. Zak played with Oasis and was also present with other sons of the Beatles when they eventually did a benefit concert covering their fathers' music. Jason Bonham eventually joined Oasis at some point when Zak had left or I could be confusing my timelines as to who joined Oasis first. Both sons of drummers became truly skilled drummers themselves.

BEST ALL TIME COVER. THE MOST BLESSED COVER. BETWEEN LED AND PLANT, AND OFFSPRING OF THE BONZO, BLESSED. THE VOCALS CRIED OUT WITH THE KIND OF INTENSITY THAT YOU KNOW THERE IS ONLY ONE AUDIENCE MEMBER TO IMPRESS WITH THEM. THE DRUMMER HITTING WITH LOVE FOR THE ONLY ONE AUDIENCE MEMBER NOT THERE. THE GUITARS WEEPING WITH JOY AS THIER MUSICIANS LOOKED UP IN WONDER AT HOW THEY HAVE COME TO THIS, WITH EXPLODING SOULS. THE AUDIENCE APPLAUDING TO A STANDING OVATION KNOWING WHAT THEY WITNESSED WAS FOR NOT FOR THIER PERSONAL OR GROUP ENJOYMENT BUT BECAUSE THEY HAD A SEAT AT THE FULL CIRCLE.
Considered by many to be the greatest song by the greatest rock band. Not once have they ever whined of NEVER receiving a Grammy for their monumental work when the band was active.
Yes, it was because of Jason. The only drummer who could play "Stairway to Heaven" by Led Zeppelin correctly was the original drummer, Jon Bonham, who was Jason's father. This song requires control, finesse, and complex drum arrangements. Phil Collins attempted to play it during the Live Aid concert in 1985 to help the band get back on tour, but his performance failed terribly, resulting in the band never playing again. Therefore, for Jon Bonham's son to perform flawlessly in front of the band was an incredible sight to see. It was a true tribute to his father in many ways. Rest in peace, Jon Bonham.
I think its the fact the song they wrote is being performed in honor of them so many yrs later. Dude is holding back full on weeping. That clutched hand
This was my wife’s favourite song. When she withdrew into her own mind due to brain cancer, I played it every night for her, to see if I could get any response from her. She passed away a year ago, and I accidentally came across this performance. I can’t stop tearing up.
I am very sorry for your loss. My sister was diagnosed with brain cancer in Dec. and she passed a few days later on Dec 19th 2022. She grew up in the 70's and loved Led Zeppelin... Life is not the same without her.
When my mum seemed lost because of her Alzheimer, music let me stay closer to her. I am pretty sure your wife enjoyed the music you shared and share with her. Big hug/abrazo from Argentina
I'm so sorry for your loss. I know what it's like to loose that special someone in your life. Stairway to Heaven is such a fitting piece. Take good care.
I think Plant was tearing up there at the end. Truly an epic tribute. Arguably the best rendition of the song ever.. Certain parts of that song play into Ann WIlson's strengths as a vocalist, and she takes full advantage.. A choir of angels doesn't hurt ever.
He has mentioned this moment in interviews since. Apparently right before the event started they were all talking about how they should have invited Jason to the event, and out he walks in his dads bowler hat to play drums and no one told them.
I actually agree with your opinion. I felt that too. And watch letterman interview after the award show!! I believe we are spot on. You will see!!!! ☮️👍🏽💯👋
Lot of tragedy happened to Plant while in the later stages of the band. He's great about his time in the band, but it was over before he was 30, and I'm sure it's not an easy place to revisit, nor living with the legend he created, which was largely out of his control at the time also, as well as into eternity.
People who let their feelings get involved with the unreal (the past) can nver be happy. Enjoy the Here and Now...why it is called the Gift or the Present
This was my dad's favourite song, he would always listen to it, every morning he played it. Naively I knew this would be his funeral song one day, in a long time I hoped. After a 5 year battle with cancer, last month, as i've always imagined, we played it during his funeral. This tribute song will always hold the biggest place in my heart as I will always feel his presence when listening to it. I love you dad, can't wait to listen to it together one day.
My favorite...your father has amazing and spiritual sense that a lot of people are not capable of having. I'm sure he is listening EVERY SINGLE TIME you play this LOUD and CLEAR!!
So sorry for your loss. This too will be my funeral song in many years to come I hope . But it’s spiritual haunting and almost in my dna. Part of my life.
Can you imagine, Jason Bonham covering one of the most iconic songs of his dad’s career and being watched by his dad’s former bandmates. How much emotion must have been running through his veins.
This version is better than many I’ve seen, including by Zeppelin themselves. Very powerful, with orchestra and choir. It’s elevated way beyond “rock song” to the land of Musical Masterpiece.
Brought chills down my spine. Always loved this song. Heart and all the singers did a wonderful job. I loved seeing Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones looking clean cut and handsome.❤
Imagine being young. Full of live. Becoming one of the largest and most influential bands ever, growing old, losing your band mates, then to hear your lifes work being just completely honored by these people. Truly amazing.
Led Zeppelin are notorious for not exactly loving it when people cover their songs. So the fact that they’re smiling like this, and Robert Plant actually cries, just goes to show you how incredible this arrangement of the song really is.
@@sidewinderenigma That's exactly right...Plant said that on a show he was just telling Page that they should've invited Jason, and then he appeared on stage.
I think this is actually better than theirs. They have a full orchestra behind them. Zep are better with their instruments (Nancy is excellent, but... Jimmy Page? Who is better than him? There are contenders, but the only guy I definitely put ahead is dead 50+ years) but Ann's voice is better than any of the boys.
That was the best Kennedy Center performance! I was in tears at the end the first time I saw it. I wonder if Yo Yo Ma's mom knew he was listening to rock?
Too bad it's been edited by some monster who has zero respect for Led Zeppelin and Heart and music in general. Not sure if it's the person who uploaded this or not, but it is a despicable thing to do to such a glorious masterpiece.
It gives me goosebumps and lump in my throat every time. I saw Heart about 15 years ago and they played a Led Zeppelin cover. My favorite is their cover of The Battle of Ev’more under the band The Love Mongers.
After watching this vid. time and time again I am now convinced Heart is probably the only current group that could of covered a Led Zeppelin song as well as they did...............Cutos to Heart and of course it's Creator Led Zeppelin, that was a beautiful rendition............💪💪👍🎹🎼🎶🎼🎹🙏🙏🙏
As a band, I can only imagine the feeling on humility when you hear your band’s top iconic hit being played masterfully as it was here. It has to hit you when you realize your creation influenced THIS. What an amazing way to be thanked and appreciated.
A hundred backup singers, an entire orchestra , and Ann Wilson powers louder and clearer than all of it and sounds flawlessly natural Amazing singer. A true enigma.
I’m 75 years old and I’ve been a subway Alumni since I can remember. I have goosebumps every time I hear it. I’m going through some health issues, (brain surgery and heart surgery) but I still hope to visit ND just once before I move on. Go Irish
This song is probably why Plant couldn't continue with Zeppelin. Not after his son died while he was on tour in 1977, Bonham in 1980, and his band's signature song is a funeral song.

Why does this rendition of the song bring a 63 year old grown man to tears. Perhaps it's the greatest song ever written, and to see it being performed in such a magnificent way and watch the originators enjoy it so.
It's that choir. Phenomenal. And their reactions at the end when the large choir comes out is great, they were like little kids. It was so cool to watch.
I don't know if anyone else could have pulled this off besides Heart. Absolutely PERFECT choice vocally, and talent wise. Looking in the eyes of the members of LZ as it played...THAT is the feeling every musician wants. Hell, at the end, the audience didn't know which direction to applaud...to the band on stage for such an unbelievable version of a legendary song, or to the legends themselves that provided that song in the first place.
@@da324 You are indeed correct! I saw them the same weekend as Woodstock was held. They played the Asbury Park Convention Hall about five miles from my house. It was amazing! This performance looked like a broadway show instead of a concert. It was okay until the background singers ruined it.

I'm sixty years old now, I've heard "Stairway To Heaven" covered by many, many bands. I thought none could ever capture the essence of the song or the band, but I was wrong. Actually, I think that Ann, as powerful as she tried to portray, was no where near the power of this song. It is the song itself, and the backup singers in the hats. She was.....OK in it. There were 1,000 singers who could do it. Not trying to take away from her effort....but she did not MAKE this song.

I couldn't imagine the impact that having legends like Led Zeppelin give you a standing ovation for performing their song for them. For veterans like Ann and Nancy Wilson it is a tribute to their abilities and dedication to the craft, to Jason Bonham it is a tribute to his father, and to the backup band and singers, it is certainly a highlight, if not the peak of their careers. A fantastic performance by all.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!
One of the BEST FEMALE VOICES IN ROCK, if not the best!!!!!
When that choir comes in hard, if you're not feeling this song deep in your bones, you're not human. Just incredible
I just don't get ppl who don't get emotional at concerts. I feel sorry they don't experience that wave of emotions.
Absolutely loving this comment🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
The choir hit all three of the original. You could see how they pepped up even more than they were.
The human voices certainly add another dimension to the song. It was unexpected and I think LZ guys enjoyed that.
@@ryanpoli3209 It's the shared beauty, joy, and happiness with a crowd of other humans. All hearts and minds on the same page.

Considered by many to be the greatest song by the greatest rock band.
Not once have they ever whined of NEVER receiving a Grammy for their monumental work when the band was active.
The Wilson sisters KILLED it! BEAUTIFUL! Robert Plant and Jimmy Page were in TEARS!
BEAUTIFUL!!!
It was because of Jason.
AND both would be quick to state "What the hell did you do to our song" ... BOTH with tears tells you how they feel.
Robert Plant was in tear because he was missing his dear friend John Bonham. He admitted as much in an interview with Howard Stern.
Ann & Nancy Wilson have been performing Zeppelin's songs for years! Decades! It's no secret Heart is the only band to pretty much nail Zeps songs
this is not an exaggeration this is one of THE BEST performances of all time
My eyes tear up every time I listen to it. Just like Robert Plant did. It is just an amazing version.
Hi yes" the charly" thank you beautiful"??? Good "???

The best thing I have heard in YEARS!!! I needed this song more than I knew.
My mother passed away ten years ago. RIP mom.
Robert really looked like he was reliving the best and worst memories of his life as those lyrics were sang so beautifully back to him.
Fantastic tribute to Led Zeppelin. Good job ❤
I though the same thing. I recall he lost a child early in life and I could almost sense that loss in his eyes
I think its the fact the song they wrote is being performed in honor of them so many yrs later. Dude is holding back full on weeping. That clutched hand

They stole this song
This was my wife’s favourite song. When she withdrew into her own mind due to brain cancer, I played it every night for her, to see if I could get any response from her. She passed away a year ago, and I accidentally came across this performance. I can’t stop tearing up.
I am very sorry for your loss. My sister was diagnosed with brain cancer in Dec. and she passed a few days later on Dec 19th 2022. She grew up in the 70's and loved Led Zeppelin... Life is not the same without her.
Sorry for your loss mate. Take care.
I am saddened and touched by what you've had to endure and what you've lost.
My god that brought a tear to my eye. Especially when the choir jumped in!!! That is definitely rock and roll!!!! Bravo Heart!!!
Watched this video 100x over the last few years. Powerful.
It's August 2023 and I'm still coming back to this. Phenomenal performance.
Me too!
Same
Same here and everytime Jason looks up there are tears in my eyes
Yes
Absolutely
Can you imagine being so good that you bring Robert Plant to tears singing his own song?
I guess, Heart was just the right choice for that. Their Song Barracuda and espeicially the singers voice on that track gets me every time. :)
No doubt
My thoughts, too.
I have a feeling that Alison Krauss led Robert Plant to salvation. He seems to have a much softer personality since working with her.
Right? And Jimmy Page!
I think Plant was tearing up there at the end. Truly an epic tribute. Arguably the best rendition of the song ever.. Certain parts of that song play into Ann WIlson's strengths as a vocalist, and she takes full advantage.. A choir of angels doesn't hurt ever.
Robert plant wiping a tear out of his eye at the end 😢
He has mentioned this moment in interviews since. Apparently right before the event started they were all talking about how they should have invited Jason to the event, and out he walks in his dads bowler hat to play drums and no one told them.
When your tribute brings the original performers to tears... that's everything right there.

Didn't they steal that song?

I actually agree with your opinion. I felt that too. And watch letterman interview after the award show!! I believe we are spot on. You will see!!!! ☮️👍🏽💯👋
I think he was remembering all the pages of his life and this is the finale of sorts
Such a perfect comment. Thank you.
The same thought crossed my mind - or at least he didn't fully appreciate it until this performance.
Lot of tragedy happened to Plant while in the later stages of the band. He's great about his time in the band, but it was over before he was 30, and I'm sure it's not an easy place to revisit, nor living with the legend he created, which was largely out of his control at the time also, as well as into eternity.
This should be #1 video on UA-cam.
Today's music does not compare to music today. Zeppelin will live forever 🤟🤟🤟🤟
December 2023. Still coming back to this performance. Just magnificent. Brings tears to my eyes.

Hands down, the best Kennedy Center Honors performance EVER!!

Seeing their faces during the song, I could only imagine the memories that were going through their minds, it brought a tear to my eyes.
I mean it moved Robert Plant to tears so that speaks volumes to me. :)

Sending all my love, sweetheart.
So sorry for your loss. This too will be my funeral song in many years to come I hope . But it’s spiritual haunting and almost in my dna. Part of my life.
Love is forever! When you hear this song think of him and smile!
For you will be with him again✝️
So sorry for your loss ❤️🌺❤️
Jason looking up from the drums at the end gets me every time
My daughter is only 2,5 years old and it’s her favorite song. She asks me every day to listen this performance
My son is just over 2 and he likes singing/humming to Like a Stone from Audioslave. These songs hit different than todays music.
I know that's a zeppelin song but Ann Wilson made that song hers that night. Much respect.
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
That guitarist had to play one of the most legendary guitar solos in history directly to the man who wrote it. No pressure god damn

This song goes down in history! She / they, did a beautiful job with it. Not an easy task.
Amazing At my wake this song will be played while I lay in my coffin smiling knowing that I am climbing the Stairway to Heaven to be with my Father
Can you imagine, Jason Bonham covering one of the most iconic songs of his dad’s career and being watched by his dad’s former bandmates. How much emotion must have been running through his veins.

No one could ever sing Starway to Heaven as good as Led Zeppelin, except for Ann Wilson from Heart. Beautiful just Beautiful.
100% right. No one has ever sang it as good as Heart. No one ever will. And for Heart to do it so well, is a great honor indeed.
This version is better than many I’ve seen, including by Zeppelin themselves. Very powerful, with orchestra and choir. It’s elevated way beyond “rock song” to the land of Musical Masterpiece.
@@markdaniels7174 If I were in my death bed and down to my final hour, I would request to hear Heart's version of Stairway one last time.

They’re the most popular band not named The Beatles or The Stones
Stopping probably at a time where they here as hot as ever! I can only imagine what could’ve been
Led Zeppelin are notorious for not exactly loving it when people cover their songs. So the fact that they’re smiling like this, and Robert Plant actually cries, just goes to show you how incredible this arrangement of the song really is.
agree 1000%.
John Bonham''s son on the drums probably adds another huge emotional edge to it as well.
He's sincere
Anyone else shed some tears while watching this? So powerful, so beautiful watching Robert Plant so excited. OMG, so beautiful performance.
Too bad it's been edited by some monster who has zero respect for Led Zeppelin and Heart and music in general. Not sure if it's the person who uploaded this or not, but it is a despicable thing to do to such a glorious masterpiece.
I read an interview he cried because John Bonhams son was on drums and he thought how proud John would be
5:00 gets me every time. To be a rock and not to roll and then seeing Robert's face. Ann Wilson absolutely nails it.
@garykudalis1548he sheds a tear and smiles multiple times. What did u want out of him?
It gives me goosebumps and lump in my throat every time. I saw Heart about 15 years ago and they played a Led Zeppelin cover. My favorite is their cover of The Battle of Ev’more under the band The Love Mongers.
It takes balls of steel to play that guitar solo in front of Jimmy Page
The smile on his face...
It sure as hell does!
And he LOVED it. It doesn’t get any better.
Not realty, have a word.

Robert Plant's tears are the highest praise that those artists could receive.
Yes, his sons gift, feelings involved, truth, honesty.....etc.🤧I cry a lot.The rest feel it too.
It's like he watching his life roll in front of him
This song is probably why Plant couldn't continue with Zeppelin. Not after his son died while he was on tour in 1977, Bonham in 1980, and his band's signature song is a funeral song.
His tears are actually for John bonham as he watches Jason bonham playing the drums, it’s in an interview with Howard stern

Why does this rendition of the song bring a 63 year old grown man to tears. Perhaps it's the greatest song ever written, and to see it being performed in such a magnificent way and watch the originators enjoy it so.
And tears to this 72 year old grown as well.
It's that choir.
Phenomenal.
And their reactions at the end when the large choir comes out is great, they were like little kids. It was so cool to watch.
Ann said Robert Plant told her she made him love the song again in that moment. That alone would bring him to tears.
I would imagine seeing his deceased bandmates son perform in the drums contributed to it.
