  • This week was rough! I experimented with weird yarn, and the results . . . weren't what I was hoping for! 😂. I also tried to knit a cool ribbed sock, which you might like?

Try that weird yarn with a stitch pattern to change up the micro stripes, or add in stripes from another color. You might like how that turns out.

That first one (the micro stripe one) would be great for planned pooling in a sock design, like cute flower clusters or something.

I think so too. It looks to me like it may have been dyed with assigned pooling in mind. My LYS owner makes a lot of assigned pooling yarn. The sock weight works well for shawl patterns that are written for the yarns dyed that way.

Loved this episode - I'm always afraid to buy hand dyed yarn for all the reasons you mentioned. I wish I knew the yarn and colorway of the pale blue/green tonal you used. I've been looking for that exact color.

Your video really resonated with me today because I love knitting socks for the creative joy in the making. I have tried to capture that joy in knitting sweaters but it just frustrates me. I have spent a lot of money on sweater patterns and quantities of yarn but I HATE the process of knitting a sweater! I recently knit your Ode to Barbara socks & had such a great time knitting with a chart for the first time. I now have beautiful socks, a new skill and so much happiness every time I wear them. I could go on and on about the joy of knitting socks ! My plan is to make myself happy, forget about knitting what I do not enjoy and best of all, knitting my way through your beautiful Sock Project book without guilt. Life is too short to knit what does not bring you joy! Thanks for confirming that for me. ❤️🧶❤️🎉

I know you don't like musicals...but chitty chitty bang bang has a song in it about failure😂 in the song they say "every failure brings you closer to success" I've carried that with me for a long time. Thank you for sharing that it's ok to not knit the 2nd sock. I didn't knit the 2nd sock on a pair I had started b/c my tension was all over the place and the 2nd skein was so weird(self patterning) that even making shorties I couldn't match them🙄 On the sock I'm knitting now, I realized I'm an anxious knitter and getting 10sts/in they're not big enough. Still deciding if I will finish it and block it to see if that changes the fabric enough, but either way I'm learning 🎉 for now I'm gonna take a break and go read more of your fabulous book😁

Art really is subjective. I'm an indie yarn dyer, I don't have a website, I just sell at festivals and such and it's interesting to see a colorway that I just love takes forever to sell but a colorway that I thought was a failure sells out super fast. And, honestly, some yarn does look better in the skein on a shelf than it does knit up.

I think the Emma's Yarn Lucky Charm colorway would work for an assigned pooling technique, where you do a special stitch when you get to the rainbow. I've seen some very cool shawls and sweaters using assigned pooling but never socks.

I think the microstriped yarn could be wonderful with large blocks of color in the cuff, heel, and toe. But like all yarn and colors, dye techniques, seeing how it will knit up is so helpful when shopping. That why I gravitate towards dyers that will offer a knit swatch because I shop with a project in mind. Also skating boarding! Please share more about your skate boarding!

So fun to see Emma's Yarn "in the wild" my LYS is owned by Emma's parents and naturally we have a ton of Emma's Yarn in the store so in my head it's just a local yarn lol. I knit with microstripes for the first time and I really enjoy them! What I love about the knitting community is that we're connected in our love of knitting but each one of us has a different silt and interests, the diversity makes endless possibilities in patterns and yarns.

Slipped stitch patterns or slipped stitch colorwork is good for those weird skeins because it breaks up the tendency for the colors to pool strangely. I love the chaos of those weird skeins and not knowing what you're going to get! Try the Trompe le Monde pattern from your new book with a weird skein and a contrasting solid color!

Ok, it’s at 9:00 and I have ideas for still being able to use this yarn for socks! Cuff/toes on a solid color that matches one of this micro strip colors or alternate your favorite stripe sequence using colors in the micro stripes with this yarn sandwiched between those solid stripes.

Lee. Have a look at assigned pooling. I find the 100% merino is better suited to a scarf…a full skein after blocking gives a shawlette with flowers. Dawn Baker has some great instructional videos and patterns . My little scarf has been useful on cooler days inside a jacket or to use in the summer when in restaurants and walk on the beach after dinner. Love to watch the show from Down Under. Joh

I personally love a micro stripe in a solid/semi solid stripe sequence. So I would knit a few rounds in that orange you had, then find a darker shade of that blue green you had and maybe a royal blue or Indigo then add in the microstripe.

I like that yarn you call weird. I cannot knit cuff down anymore even though I was taught this way as a child. I started knitting taat toe up and now is the only way for me. I can check the fit all along the way to get the proper fit and there’s no concern with the cast off toe. If you are afraid of running out of yarn you can make the cuff shorter and cast off anytime. Too many pluses for me to do it any other way.

  • @sandraback7809

Am I weird that I actually like my socks not matching when using self striping/variegated yarn?
I was showing someone my latest sock project at my knit & natter group and it was suggested I re start my second sock and adjust where I cast on to get my socks to match.
I’m now making your Mermaid Scales socks for my young grandchildren They like the colours all over the place too. But I am now doubting myself and avoiding vague requests for a pair. I’m thinking that I’d rather just enjoy making weird matchy not matchy socks than put pressure on myself.

You are a very good communicator and even I followed along on this one. I've been knitting socks for almost 2 years and I could tell it would do that. I have seen many a skeins from different dyers that have that same effect. I wouldn’t have bought yarn dyed for assigned pooling because I don’t love any of the patterns I’ve seen where you have the special stitches randomly placed throughout a project. Can you knit socks successfully with 100% Merino yarn? I am interested to follow along and find out.

Okay, you view your Aqua blue w/orange stripes as a failure, which is okay! But please knit the second sock and pass them on to someone who'll love or need a pair of socks. Then I think you'll love them because they made someone joyful, and your heart will do a "Happy Dance".

I just love your videos!!! You sold me on the Stillwater socks last week and I’m obsessed with them! I have the perfect purple socks going 💜
Also love you knitting up the unique skein! I’ve been disappointed several times with ones that look good in the skein vs. knit up!!!

“Weird” Yarn, I get what you are saying. I did though love how you took the challenge on. Would be great to see some more like this. I did though think it might look different knit up in a hat 🤔

So I am curious - what did you envision for the second sock. Seems it came out like you meant it to. It is obviously perfectly knitted but curious why at the end you did not like it but when you were knitting the leg you did. I am starting to design and designer’s thoughts really interest me. Hope this is not to forward.

At least it wasn’t horrific flashing 😅 That’s what I was worried it would look like! I’ll try to dye a skein like that now though

I personally loved that yarn but I totally agree, if you dislike a yarn for sure don't keep going with it!

I think that yarn would make an interesting hat. Changing how many stitches are in a round will change how it stripes up. 🤔
