Finally - someone else who does not enjoy musicals. I would rather have a root canal than sit through a musical. My friends all love them and get frustrated that I will not join in their excitement. Thanks again for another great podcast.
I agree with your gut instinct on the marl... GORGEOUS fabric, but you lose the beauty of those mock cables. Perhaps a less-speckly marl, like two tones of the same color? Knitting the fingering version now and LOVING them- so addictive.
Three words….West Side Story! Love your tutorials!! Just bought this pattern. I’m like you, I have a lot of socks that I’ve knit but don’t wear. Hey, they’re too precious for that🤗
Thank you for doing these podcasts. The knitting and sock content is awesome, but I appreciate your stories, tangents, and just overall presence the most. ❤️
Summer I just recently subscribed to your channel and I’m going back and watching old videos. I’m learning so much from you! Thank you! I am just starting my own channel on UA-cam as well. After seven years of Knitting, I am just now having the desire to knit socks, and you are setting me on fire! I’m about to dive in deep❤
Summer - my customers are loving your book. They are telling me it’s like a master’s class on making socks..plus more! Looking forward to your Fiberside Chat!
Oh this makes my whole day!! That's exactly what I was going for with the book, so I'm relieved that customers are loving it!!! Thank you so much for this feedback!
Absolutely loving your podcasts. It's like having a friend without having to have a friend! The joys of being an introvert. I have pre-ordered your book and I'm impatiently waiting for it to be released in the UK! P. S. I don't enjoy musicals either. I love films and I love songs, but when they're combined it just jars my teeth 😂
You are so right about knitting socks and the reasons for knitting socks. I have made so many socks that I can do them almost in my sleep - I have socks on needles on my desk all the time and pick them up during long meetings to help me concentrate on the meeting. Knitting socks helps me focus! Also just downloaded your new pattern and can’t wait to start my dk socks!
Another great episode Summer! For that heavily speckled sock: I would say that if I could not see the cabled pattern in real life (doesn't matter to me for photos), then I wouldn't use that yarn. You're making me dream of getting some good solids so I can have a play! Right now I am working with those odd minis and random skeins in my stash (I mean, yarn collection 😉)...but still enjoying the process and working on the "right" fit for me (and my teen boys's..at least I can wear them after they outgrow them if they aren't manky 😂)
Love the mock cable socks. And love the idea of using the mohair. I love the little space that you are filming in. Would you ever give us a bigger peek? I'm trying to find a small space to work in and yours is so fresh and cheerful.
Totally agree on musicals. They were actually got a very high attention and popularity during depression time (1920s) as an easy to follow alternative to opera performances, as well as a great distraction from the very horrible economic conditions and overall life
I’m like you, Summer. I don’t like musicals. My family thinks I’m weird, but I find them boring. I just purchased your Hibernal DK socks pattern and have never knit DK socks before. Also, really looking forward to receiving your book next week (Amazon)!!
I am so enjoying your podcasts! I had decided I wanted to try to become a sock knitter this year, and your tip to start by knitting lots of vanilla socks is so encouraging! Thanks so much!
When I Marl yarns for a DK knit, I tend to use a Vanilla unspeckled yarn with a speckled yarn, , that way the Speckles are not drowned out by the other yarn, unfortunately you are loosing the pattern and stitch definition with both of the speckled yarns you have used. Love the pattern it’s Gorgeous ❤
Summer I love your channel. I am so excited for your book next week. All your socks are so happy. I love your tips for sock knitting. It took awhile for me to know what really fits and what didn’t. Have fun with your book tour. How exciting ❤ safe travels
New viewer here from Nova Scotia, Canada! I’m seeing a lot of people asking how they can make their sock toes more rounded instead of the usual sort of squared off Kitchener stitch toe. Also how to eliminate that dog ear at the end of the Kitchener stitching. Just an idea for future videos! Love your channel … keep on keepin’ on!
Summer, I also like long socks. My ankles get cold under my work desk & if I scrunch them down, I stay warm 😊 I just purchased 3 of your patterns, thanks for the coupon! 😀👍
I just discovered your UA-cam channel thanks to Knit Together with Kim and Jonna. I’ve been following you on Instagram for a long time. I love your sock designs. I binge watched all of your videos and loved knitting along as you laughed and smiled your way through each episode. You sure do not act like an introvert in front of the camera. 😊 I am browsing through your delightful book on my iPad right now. It’s a snow day here in southern Lancaster County, PA - the perfect day to receive a new knitting book. Like you, I love to read and I love to knit but I can’t do them together. I’m also a visual learner so audio books aren’t my jam. And I also get motion sickness easily so reading and knitting just won’t gel. The read vs. knit tug of war is very real. Sometimes I’ll knit a row or two (or ten) then read a chapter. Stop. Repeat. Congratulations on your book release and happy knitting!
I would love to see you demo how you weave in ends as you go. On page 71 of your book, it looks like you have ends woven in both the old yarn and the new yarn. I think I know how to weave in the NEW yarn when you first pick it up , but the old yarn is the one I can't wrap my head around. Thank you in advance!
Oh i am just starting knitting socks. I did two vanilla socks and i want to knit fun patterns... but now i learned that ita better to knit more basic socks😂...
I will say it again, I love to watch your vlogs! I broadcast to my TV and I let them run so while I am doing things you voice is chit chatting in the background, thanks to HD OLED I am familiar with with your pores and eyelashes 😂 I am telling there isn’t a video where I don’t relate or experience the exact same things like being bored with musicals and becoming emotionally exhausted when I have a double event day, ( a trip to the store counts as an event ) haha so I am done sounding like a crazee lady imagining we could be like sisters or at least besties agreeing with each other all day knitting socks and petting dogs, or in my case a chicken ..🤔 I guess that would be if you lived in NC or I in OK. 😂 I wish I had a sock yarn collection like yours. 😍 have a good week.
I am so excited to see an episode on DK socks! I am a huge fan of DK socks and I love that you created a pattern & showed a few different yarn options. These are all I knit for gifts especially! Great episode and P.S I don't like musicals either 🙃
Wool sock yarn, particularly the indie dyed yarn, is usually superwash: it dyes beautifully and can go in the machine. But superwash is not as springy as untreated wool. It’s a trade off. The superwash wool+nylon yarn wears like iron and is brilliantly colored, but it just doesn’t have any bounce and will lose some its shape after wearing.
So glad I heard about you, your podcast and your patterns. I really enjoyed my first episode and laughed out loud about your musicals quandary. I grew up singing and dancing and have also come to believe that musicals are first and foremost for the performers (and maybe their parents). I never go out of my way to see one and sometimes go out of my way not to, which I feel a bit bad about, if I know the performers. Enjoyed your energy and humor and appreciate your guidance. I look forward to resuming my sock knitting habit with you.
Thank you for your sock advice…I love that you said learn what you love! It can be hard to feel it out on your own with so much input from Instagram, UA-cam etc. it’s so nice to hear do what you love, what colors you love.
I was a kid, w/my mother we saw "Oklahoma". When Curley was riding his horse through the wheat fields signing away, I couldn't stop laughing over the obscurity of it. But really I love musicals, they're relaxing and lovely to listen to. This was a stellar podcast, again took notes! I agree w/you, be your own designer!
I really enjoy these podcasts so much! You are so empowering and inspiring, and I love how you focus on equipping other knitters and creators to make what they like. Thank you! Also, the marled fabric those speckled yarns is making is so beautiful, but I agree that your stunning pattern is being drowned out. They look like they want to be vanilla socks, to me :)
Not sure if you have seen any newer musicals besides Hamilton but I just saw &Juliet and it was full of fun 90s/00s pop music. Hope they come out with a video of it eventually.
Summer, as you have educated us on the difference between the commercial and hand it socks, I’m just wondering why nobody has created some wool with elastic in it? All the socks out there would probably love it!
Hey Summer! Would you ever consider making a video on your favorite cast on and bind off for socks? I feel like your cast ons are super stretchy - mine not so much. 😉 Love the podcast and your patterns!
Hi Summer, I just found your website today as I saw - 5 different sock patterns. I just ordered Book #27 from MDK - socks, also a pattern from another 100% yarn farm near Ottawa Ontario called Topsy Farms. Interesting episode, then when you mentioned Knit Stars - I purchased the first 5 years, then decided since I wasn't making anything to not continue. Then I realized that you are doing a class for Knit Stars. How awesome. I have a few WIP's to finish, then off to more blanket and sock knitting. Thank you so much. p.s. I hope you have partners for all those lovely socks.
Just found your podcast as a result of the hype around your book. Such great reviews. I'm being good and putting it on my birthday list although I want to buy it now! Fabulous podcast. You are incredibly generous with information - how to do your rib stitch here and all the info about book publishing in your episode on that. I 'm with you, I loathe musicals and Valentine's Day! I don't mind the individual songs; some of them are really goof. It's the format. You're following the story and then instead of the usual dialogue - like IRL - it's interrupted by singing and dancing. It's so false and unreal. I got tricked into going to a musical because I was told it was a play. It was a really horrible 90 mins. Pre-smart phone so nothing to do but sit and bear it😊b
I really love this podcast, thank you for all you're doing. I just ordered the hard copy AND the kindle version of your book just to show my support and hopefully FINALLY become the sock knitter I've always wanted to be. Thanks again! 💗
I live in my woolly socks! It’s so damp here that it’s so comfy! And if it’s damaged it’s ok I can treat myself with a new pattern or a new book of socks ❤
I enjoy your podcast as it is so practical and informative. Your color combinations are such an inspiration. Your color combination in the speckle didn’t do your pattern justice. Oh, and by the way, you earrings are fantastic.
I'm glad you brought up the ethical side of store bought socks, or lack thereof! I began my knitting journey as a hobby but now I mostly knit to cover my garment needs using ethically produced fibers 😊
@summerleedesignco.6471 It sure can be! Just trying to do my fair share here and there. Thank you so much for everything you teach us. You're very talented!
I cannot wait for my book to arrive. You have reignited my love of knitting socks and I so appreciate that. As an eighties girl myself I would suggest the musical Xanadu! Roller skating, mythology and ELO songs. It’s super fun live when people actually get up and dance like it’s a concert. Looking forward to to future episodes.
Can’t wait for my book to arrive! Been knitting socks for years and have many books so never thought I’d be buying another one, but, your tutorial on doing color work with small circs was a life saver. When I saw that you came out with a book I knew I had to have it! And, I really dislike musicals, too.
Excellent podcast! Enjoy your book tour! Funny about the musicals. I’m not a huge fan, but I don’t actively dislike them. I feel like I’m the only knitter who does not enjoy gardening!
You have really found your niche in life, Summer! You're so good at all of this stuff. Your episodes are so enjoyable, fun, informative! I don't want your videos to end! Thanks for the spectacular content!
I love your podcast, Summer! And I felt an instant connection when you mentioned your dislike of musicals. I am the exact same way. I watch for the story, but then I feel like it gets completely interrupted by all the singing and dancing and my brain completely turns off when the singing starts. I like fantasy stories and all that, but I guess my imagination can't make the leap into believing that any sane person would suddenly and randomly break out into song. The only exceptions I make are for the musicals I grew up watching: the Sound of Music, the Wizard of Oz and Grease - and only for the theatrical versions, not the Broadway ones. Maybe I had a better imagination as a child and was willing to make that leap😊 As for your speckled sock, I agree with the general consensus that the pattern gets completely lost. Since you really like the fabric and the color, maybe you can take your own advice and recharge your sock knitting mojo by knitting a plain vanilla sock instead! Good luck with your book signings!
Another wonderful episode! Excited to get your book next week 🙂 Vanilla socks are my favorite to knit! I have slowly been adding in textures/patterns, but I think vanilla socks will forever have my heart.
I’m also not into musicals. Haha. You are not alone! The marled yarns are lovely but I think they’d be better on a vanilla sock. Also, I have found that my merino socks stretch out more than my socks made from wools like BFL. If I feel like my socks have gotten a little stretched out, I wash them and run them through the dryer on low. I only do this with superwash wool socks, and if you’re nervous you can test a swatch. But I’ve never had an issue with them felting or shrinking too much. They always come out just right!
If you want a subtle texture sock then go for it in the speckles. But if the stitch pattern is what you like best then stick to the solids. I really like it in your brown sample.
Normally I actually like marled or variegated yarns with texture, but I don’t know, in this case I feel like it’s just too much. I definitely think that fabric would look way better in something a little more vanilla, or stripey. Love your podcast and your dog is so cute❤❤❤!!!
I binge watched most of your videos the other day, and the hibernal socks have stuck with me. So happy I purchased them today at the subscriber discount! 😊 Thank you, Christina ❤
love your bouquets!!! I got your Knit stars class , your patterns and now your wonderful podcast AND I just preordered your book cause I love everything you do...now I need to make my FIRST PAIR of socks!!!!!!! it always scared me for some reason to knit with dons so I always postponed knitting them.... I think I am "mentally" prepared to knit some ..and I have the feeling I'll get obsessed too :) thank you for your wonderful work Summer! :) Elisa
Always enjoy your podcasts! I agree with you - I'm not a fan of musicals in general. There are a few exceptions (Grease!) and I love music and dance, but most musicals just seem jarring when they suddenly break out in song and dance in the middle of a conversation! Love your new book - knitting my scrappy socks now!
J’adore ce podcast Summer ❤ thank you for being so clear. And now I will never be ashamed of knitting mere Vanilla socks! But will try DK with your new pattern as well (thanks for the coupon code on Ravelry!)
Congratulations on your book! I'm eagerly waiting for my pre-ordered book to arrive. One more point to add to your research on store-bought vs. hand-knit socks - hand-knit socks are the best non-restrictive socks because they don't fall into your shoes or restrict blood flow. My mom has varicose veins around her ankles and absolutely adores my hand-knit socks for their fit.
Summer, love your podcasts so much! If you don't like musicals give Funny Girl (with Barbra Streisand) and Fiddler on the Roof a try (if you haven't already) My husband hates musicals but those two he loves. Looking forward to getting the new book next week. Thanks
Great podcast!!! I so enjoy your podcasts and LOVE the DK Hibernal socks!! I appreciate all sock knitting tips and your socks are always so beautiful. Your tension on your socks is so lovely. I aspire to have my socks look that smooth and even. My socks are functional, but always seem to have 1 or 2 errors in each pair. I know, I know, knit a bunch of vanilla socks!! Off to continue my current sock. Thanks again for a fun podcast. Best of luck with your book tour and I am eagerly awaiting my copy.
Thanks for a great episode 🎉🎉🎉 Great tutorial in the mock cable!!!!bought the pattern!!!!looks like i can do it!!!!❤ Love the idea of my fingering with mohair for this pattern!!!! Love ur speckled yarns together!!!!but pattern gets lost!!!! You are a breath of fresh air ☀️ Elaine 🏠⛄
Great podcast! I've knit probably three or four zillion socks, but you are finding new and enchanting things to say about the process, so many thanks! Re musicals: I just took my granddaughters to the 60th anniversary of My Fair Lady (the movie) and holy moly--it was LONG! Two thoughts. One: since audience members are paying major bucks for tickets to see a musical on Broadway, you can't just give them an hour-long musical or they'll feel cheated. Plus the "merch" and snacks you buy during intermission are another important part of the bottom line for the theater/actors/producers so you need a show long enough to have a substantial intermission. Thought two: "Old time" musicals were written long before the advent of things like tiktok--back when audiences had the patience and the attention span to pay attention to something for three hours. I know my patience for sitting still that long is pretty much gone. So on that note--many thanks for the 45 min. podcast! ;-) Looking forward to Amazon delivering your book next week.
I love your speckled yarn but it’s not doing your pattern justice, it’s a lovely pattern, I have a cardigan pattern with the mock cables up the fronts and down the sleeves. Thanks for another fab video 😊😊😊
The speckled yarn is gorgeous, however the mock cable is completely lost with it. Have been on the fence about trying mohair in my socks but I think I will give it a shot.
I always learn so much from your videos. Thank you!! I purchased your DK Hibernal socks yesterday and the tutorial was very helpful. I was going to start them until I heard your tip about how to become a better sock knitter 😂 I have your book pre-ordered so I am selecting yarn to cast on basic vanilla socks ❤ Thanks for all your help. As a beginner these are amazing
I should receive my bnext week I preordered and I purchased your master class really looking forward to knitting some socks that are not vanilla. Thanks so much for your podcast I’ve been enjoying them. Happy knitting
Hi Summer! Love the podcast videos!! I noticed when you showed the tutorial for the mock cable that your yarn over is wrapped in the opposite direction to how you wrap for a knit stitch (I think, if I saw it right) but if that’s the case when you come to that yarn over on the next row won’t it be sorta twisted? Do you then knit through the back to orient it correctly or do you intentionally knit that way? Maybe I’m overthinking this haha but I made your original hibernal socks last year and loved them and am wondering if I accidentally did something slightly different! Thanks!
I also was surprised with the direction oft the yarn over 🤔 is it something you always do Summer ? Any particular reason? I am curious! I also love this mock cable and used it in one if my designs 😊 Your DK Hibernal socks look amazing! And your episode was great, as always!
Hey Summer, pretty new sock knitter here. (I’ve made 3 pairs so far, have 4 & 5 on the hook as I type). Saw your name on the video and was thrilled to see you are the author of the sock book I just bought!!!!! Watching Episode 1 of the podcast and loving it! My question: my last pair came out in two different sizes 🙁, same set up etc, but after blocking I can see so many issues. Any hints? TIA
It's not even funny how much I love this podcast! I think i have rewatched all the episodes at least once because it is so watchable!
Same!!!!
Thank you so much!! That makes my day!
Finally - someone else who does not enjoy musicals. I would rather have a root canal than sit through a musical. My friends all love them and get frustrated that I will not join in their excitement.
Thanks again for another great podcast.
Same!!! I just can do it!
That speckled yarn does not do justice to your pattern!
Agreed!
Totally agree! You just can't see it at all!
Agreed
I agree with your gut instinct on the marl... GORGEOUS fabric, but you lose the beauty of those mock cables. Perhaps a less-speckly marl, like two tones of the same color? Knitting the fingering version now and LOVING them- so addictive.
Right? You totally lose the pattern, but the fabric would be great on vanilla!

Love the Hibernal pattern! I love that you did the tutorial for the mock cable! Thank you! ❤

Your dog’s demo was the best! 😂❤ … I’m looking forward to knitting those dk hibernal socks
Beesly saw her moment to become famous and took it! 😂
Love your weekly videos, thank you Summer❤.
That mock cable is featured in the Caitlyn Hunter sweater “Stromboli”. Whole thing looks like fancy cable, but it’s very simple and no cable needles!
I would love to see you demo how you weave in ends as you go. On page 71 of your book, it looks like you have ends woven in both the old yarn and the new yarn. Oh i am just starting knitting socks. I did two vanilla socks and i want to knit fun patterns... but now i learned that ita better to knit more basic socks😂...
Oooo I'm loving this "couch nest" talk. I love being in a couch nest. Just glad you came up with a name for it ☺️
The Couch Nest is the best!!!
Great episode! Thanks for sharing your tips with us.
I just love this podcast so much! Including all the musical chat, haha!
Here in the Netherlands we call the mock cable 'koffieboontje' (coffee bean)
Thank you. I have been wanting to do a sock with Mohair and fingerweight yarn. The yarns are waiting in my stash.
I will say it again, I love to watch your vlogs! I broadcast to my TV and I let them run so while I am doing things you voice is chit chatting in the background, thanks to HD OLED I am familiar with with your pores and eyelashes 😂

I am maki g the thick socks from your book. No had to double the length of the heel flap but I love it! Making a pair for my sister now.

Great podcast this week! I love when you put a bit of your tutorial back in to your video, I missed that.
I love the Hibernal socks 🧦! I think the pattern would look good with a marling that is with two solid color yarns.
It's overwhelming trying to live life in an ethical way! So much of our goods and services are produced by people we'll never see.
@summerleedesignco.6471
It sure can be!
Thank you!!!
Thank you so much for such great feedback!!❤
I think the speckled fabric would look great as a vanilla sock. 😊
Maybe I had a better imagination as a child and was willing to make that leap😊
As for your speckled sock, I agree with the general consensus that the pattern gets completely lost.
I’ve never clicked something so fast as I clicked this podcast! I so look forward to getting home from work and watching this podcast on Fridays.
If you want a subtle texture sock then go for it in the speckles. But if the stitch pattern is what you like best then stick to the solids. I really like it in your brown sample.
Loved it, thank you!
Thank you, Christina ❤
love your bouquets!!! :) Elisa
Thank you very much Summer. This was such an interesting podcast. I can't wait to receive your book!
Fabulous episode! Yes I'm sing okla-homa in my head 😂 love the mock cables tutorial
I really enjoyed everything you had to say! I bought your pattern. Thanks for adding in the mock cable tutorial.
Thanks for a great episode 🎉🎉🎉
Great tutorial in the mock cable!!!!bought the pattern!!!!looks like i can do it!!!!❤
Love the idea of my fingering with mohair for this pattern!!!!
Love ur speckled yarns together!!!!but pattern gets lost!!!!
You are a breath of fresh air ☀️

Paint Your Wagon. Clint Eastwood!!!! 😮 musical!!!!
I'm with you on musicals. I cringe when people spontaneously burst into song. I love this podcast and seeing all your fabulous socks!
Oh that's the WORST! I had a date spontaneously burst into song at a What-a-burger 24 years ago and I've never recovered from it 😂
I just love your podcast. I was never a sock knitter but you turned me into one. I bought a whole bunch of your patterns, including Hibernal DK!
Your book and podcast got a mention on knit together with Kim and jonna, episode 24
I was going to start them until I heard your tip about how to become a better sock knitter 😂
I have your book pre-ordered so I am selecting yarn to cast on basic vanilla socks ❤
Thanks for all your help. As a beginner these are amazing
Great podcast. I am so excited to get your book❤
I'm a beginner. I first pair was too big, the second had a ton of errors, sock three had fewer errors and I'm on sock 4.
I should receive my bnext week I preordered and I purchased your master class really looking forward to knitting some socks that are not vanilla. Thanks so much for your podcast I’ve been enjoying them. Happy knitting
Thank you for the tutorial. Your book arrived yesterday and I can’t wait to read it. I love your podcast. ❤
Thanks!
I thought the same thing. 😊
Any hints? TIA
Love your podcasts. Love your enthusiasm. Thank you!
