I definitely do from time to time. Been beginning to try and find my vlogging style, but as I'm sure you know, that comes with a great deal of uncertainty. Thank you for this kind reminder from you and Peter. You guys have been my favorite youtubers the past 6 months, and I can't thank you guys enough for all the information and inspiration. If you guys are ever near Lake George NY, I'd love to take you for a beer and a wakeboarding session!
TravelFeels Honestly I prefer comparing myself in a positive way so that i can use it to improve myself. Btw LOVE how Peter showed up in this! It put a smile on my face
It is pretty difficult. I am also a big Casey fan, and at some point I found myself copying a lot of the techniques that he uses in his videos. But at that same point I needed to stop myself and remind me that I need to find my own style. I think it is okay to find inspiration in other youtubers, like you and Peter, but you need to find your own voice and style, not just make the same thing someone else has done. Successful people like Casey, you or Peter, have succeeded, because you all have a unique style, and I think that is great, it is refreshing. Your content is what makes your videos unique, and you and Peter have done a great job. Keep up the good work. Cheers!
I don't know that I compare myself to other UA-camrs. I watch some and say wow I really like his/her style or the way they set up the shots etc. I don't harp on trying to be exactly like them or worry about what they are doing. I just try that camera angle or trick I saw them do the next time I make a video. I just turned 48 and made it my goal this year to do more videos and try the vlogging type approach. I find myself watching these types of videos more and more and thought well if I enjoy watching them maybe someone would enjoy watching mine. Plus its a great way to look back on where you've been or what you've done.
I go back and forth on this a lot. Being fairly new to video and youtube I find I'm still finding my style and figuring out how to do a lot of things. I find myself "borrowing" ideas, shots, transitions, themes, etc. from guys like Casey, Peter McKinnon, and Yourself too! But the way that I always explain it to people who ask about it or try to call me out on it is this: When you first start to learn an instrument, you pick up some basics... how does the instrument work, how are you supposed to hold it or play it. The next thing you do is learn a couple notes and then you probably start playing twinkle twinkle little star. So already, you are studying and copying the style of Mozart. Then maybe you get better and you start to play the songs of your favorite artists, further studying and learning their styles. Then if you decide to write your own music, guess what happens?! It probably sounds a bit like all those songs you've learned! Then you learn more different songs, and write more different songs and eventually you find a sound that is uniquely yours but really its just a conglomeration of things you learned, borrowed, and stole from the artists you studied. This is no different in making videos... you learn the basics and theory behind cameras and light and audio and then you have to start trying to replicate the things that you saw and liked! The more diverse content you take in, the more diverse your output will be. And the better you get at your craft, the more individual and personal your style will be. And every once in a while you might do something specific and say "thats a ______ style thing" but thats ok! As long as you are happy with the product in the end I don't think it should matter too much! Just keep creating and learning!
This is a very positive outlook on the touchy subject of drawing inspiration from other creators VS. copying. Loved hearing your thoughts on this man, thank you!
My husband and I love watching you and Peter! Casey is amazing as well and we love him too, but you three have your own styles and it's great. It always keeps things interesting.
Unusual but great message! I wish you and Peter keep up together, I like to watch you guys promoting each other. For me you are like actors from my favorite series in which we don't just waste our time, but we learn filmmaking and photography together! Keep up doing a good job. Like button smashed!
Casey didn't invent the montage he's just one of the most viewed using it and last I checked Blues Clues did mail time first. Keep up the good work Matti, I enjoy your content and it serves as inspiration for my own channel. But is inspiration copying?? heck I've dove to deep....
Casey Neistat is the guy who created a personal style of making Vlogs. I doubt you find one before him that filmed his vlogs on a speedy boosted board over the streets, among other vehicles, while holding with one hand, a big, heavy camera and a gorilla pod, while drinking juice with the other hand. Among other things. There´s thousands of people now trying to copy his style, but I don´t see it as a bad thing. Woody Allen copied and still copy Frederico Fellini movie style, and he´s proud of that.
I'm so happy I discovered your channel a week or two ago. I bought your LUT pack and it makes my A6500 footage look incredible with very little tweaking. Thank you for everything you're doing for the community.
TravelFeels I agree with you brother. We all get our inspirations from somewhere or someone. But honestly while you learn from them you should figure out you way of portraying your creativity and your style. That's why I went back and rewrote my first movie script to something that pertains to me, my likes, and my style in a movie and it keeps getting better as I learn from myself and move on. I now have 3 Original scripts I'm working on and 2 scripts that are more fan based but I'm doing these more for fun to get better at storytelling and coming up with more ideas and styles as well to add on. You, Peter Casey and Sara are my favorite vloggers on here so far keep it up!
This is so inspiring! Thank you. I have a Russian language channel. Once someone mentioned that I copy Casey and it demotivated me. I started thinking how avoiding coping and quality and motivation straggled. In this video you say don't worry about comparing. And that's great. Thank you!
Just in time you came up with this video. I was JUST editing my video, where I am enjoying a cup of coffee and I was thinking that I should probably take it out because they will chase me around that I am trying to copy Peter... well, I love coffee too... and I don't want to drink something else instead... but I'll still take it out as I don't like nasty emails... lol... but great point Matti... thank you..
I just watched your video about using camera angles to tell a story. When I watched the part where Peter explains his take on comparing yourself to others, I immediately remembered why you used that angle. It definitely gave Peter more authority when explaining...not that he needs it but it really brought more power to his words. Thanks for your tutorials, Matti! I'm really learning a lot!
Thanks guys! I love your videos, keep 'em coming. I've learned heaps by simply watching and then having a go at replicating and hopefully improving some of your editing tricks. The sky is the limit!
It's definitely hard not to compare when you're inspired so much by that person! I see your films and other people's films and wish that one day mine can be like that. I'll never stop grinding though and I am happy with my video editing improvements! Thank you for another great video. :)
Great inspiration! Comparison is a HUGE struggle of mine! Just the other day I was reflecting on who I am and what value I can bring to the world as I work creating. This video helps and affirms to be me when creating. Thank you Matti!!!
I just found your channel through the suggested videos and wanted to say Hi! I started to learn UA-cam and video making a few weeks ago with the view of launching a travel channel for people with special needs. I can see I'll be able to learn loads just by watching your videos. Thanks for a great channel! x
Loved this video, also super interested in that adapter. Also love the music of this video. Do you have a video about using music for UA-cam videos? I used to daily vlog and a year later a lot of my content is being flagged, when I thought I was using music I could. I think that's a HUGE hurdle for people making content. Any suggestions for free music?
Great video dude. I'm loving what you (and Peter) are doing. And it was really nice to see you guys cruising my neighborhood while I'm on the other side of the planet. I miss Toronto even though Indonesia is treating me really well. Thanks for the video and a little taste of home.
Great video Matti. Such a great attitude that I try to have as well. You just have to go out and do the work and not worry about all of the negativity. When the work is done, your positive nature will wash it all away through your creation. Thumbs up man.
Awesome video Matti! Been following you since you covered LostLeblanc. Happy for your YT success and appreciate all the motivation and tips! Learn, create, repeat is one of my favorite lines to keep in mind these days. :)
@TravelFeels you do you. I'm glad that you are unique in your own way. People will always compare us to someone or something. That is human nature. I'm happy that you got your Boosted Board! I also love the ND filters that you got for your drone. I also saw your previous videos and I liked your review on the DJI Spark! Keep up the amazing work!
I love your insight on the comparison of a person to another and the like is a reflection of oneself. I wanna know more about the things you would talk about when you were a Youth Pastor (which I only recently found out in an older video) I'm Catholic, and I can tell that what you said had a deeper meaning and how well you handled and how you explained it. It was timely for me to hear as I was thinking about how I want to grow and become a great photographer and cinematographer but I don't have all those tools and gear, made me compare myself to you and many other great artists, designers, professionals, etc. Thanks for being a blessing, Matti. You and Peter are a blessing. :)
Hey man, after watching one of your videos about essential camera equipment I ended up getting a Tiffen Black Pro Mist filter. Before that id never heard of them before. Thanks for the great content bro, keep up the good work!
Big fan of your channel Matti. Very cool to see you and Peter collaborating because I really enjoy his channel as well. You guys are inspiring. I appreciate all the film making knowledge you share with us. Cool video!
I think I stumbled onto your channel from Peter's and I have to say I love both of you dude's positive attitudes. Keep up the good work and congrats on the Boosted board. Cheers! ☕️
Could you please make a video of your workflow for storage? Like do you use a NAS/DAS, what brand(s) you would recommended, etc? I'm looking in to these at the moment for video editing and would love to know your take on backing up file and just storage options in general!
There are four guys I watch on UA-cam without fail Yourself, Casey, Peter M and Jason L. You all inspire me in your own ways to improve my skills in photography. To copy is to compliment in my book and enjoy each body of work for what it is. Inspiration thankfully received.
Mattii love the video. Putting stuff together and my efforts are on steroids right now because of people like you, Casey, Peter (guy helped a ton). Honestly thank you
Hilarious. Just today I was thinking of a vlog intro for tomorrow and had the idea of making coffee, then remembered Peter and was all "Oh I can't do that, I'd be copying Peter" You guys rock man, and I mean that. These little insights you put out are where it's at. Thanks
Great videos Matti! Been following you for a month now. Got some great tips for my summer vacation in Lofoten, though now when editing I see a lot of improvements I could've made.. Keep up the good work and regards from Tampere!
Great message man, I agree that far too many people are quick to draw a negative comparitive! I think if any comparisons should be made it's that we should all as filmmakers aspire to be like Casey or like Peter or like yourself. Create something you love, and focus on that! Sure you can take influence from your "heroes" but be yourself and work on improving your own stuff instead of dwelling on what other people are doing and you're golden!
Everyone struggles with the comparison trap, the difference is whether or not you choose to rise above that. I have found that as I have grown older I don't fall into this trap as often. Pursuing video and learning more and more from every video I complete is exhilarating! Creation is a powerful thing. So by watching channels like yours and other talented people I get to watch and LEARN instead of just criticizing what someone else is doing. Great video and great topic!
Dude! Yesssssss. Amazing self awareness, rock-solid security in what yourself. Great advice to time-wasted on comparison. You've got a new subscriber in my friend! Cheers brother, B.
Hope you enjoy the Boosted! I had a Dual+ a while ago - It was amazing! Unfortunately I found the wheels, bearings, and belts couldn't stand up to the crappy roads where I live...Oh well. Back to a folding bike for now (from cool to nerdy?) and maybe another board further down the line :-)
I have just started making videos/vlogs or whatever you want to call it, and sure ill admit that lot of what i film really does get derived from you, peter and casey,, but its only because Im trying to learn the basics and slowly branch out and creating my own style. Ive only been doing this for about 4 months now, but I think people on youtube, but especially you three have helped me so much in my progression. Lastly, I think if there is one think i do try and copy is the love and passion that you guys bring to your videos
Keep working! UA-cam is our portfolio and people love to criticize - If I shared all the videos I made when I was a kid it would be a pure copy of what I saw on the big screen because I was trying to learn and get better "still am today." But now'a days UA-cam is where we post our work for all to see. Who cares is your work looks like someone else's, you'll progress, develop your style, and eventually people will see a video and say that's @WarmVideosBR
Holy snap! I was just thinking about this today! I just recently got into filming and naturally, I’ve been using UA-cam as a learning tool the last few months. I stumbled across Peter’s page which led me to you and others. Anyway, as I make content, I sometimes catch myself “imitating” things that I’ve seen. I’ve questioned whether people will consider it “copying”. But the reality is... I like coffee, I like skateboarding... Hell!! I like “bwhats-up!” HAHA... I won’t use that one though! Regardless! Great video! It’s messages like this that inspire me to eventually get to the level of some of whom I consider mentors. You guys all rock! Thanks!
Mattih I honestly feel from watching your videos and Casey's videos you have a better personality and a warmer character I admire you a lot more and I'm more excited to watch your videos over Caseys. Keep Doing what you do!
I've definitely been guilty of this, and still am without even knowing it sometimes, especially just starting out and getting lots of inspiration from guys like you, Pete, and Casey. Thank you for another awesome video man, I loved the message. It was much needed.
Casey is the reason I decided to start filming again. His style is what I've been looking for in Vlogs. He's a real filmmaker who makes interesting videos. I find myself comparing myself to him all the time but it's because he makes the style of videos I want to make. I used to not want to create things because I was scared of being a copycat and I just wanted to be original and this just held me back for years from doing what I really want to do. Don't let comparing yourself to others stop you from creating what you want to create.
Just checked out some of your videos. You are exactly what I'm talking about. Great work. I see the Casey influence but you seem to be doing your thing. I am not a religious man but appreciate what you are doing and your creativity. Also "Documentrey" made me laugh. Clicked the subscribe button because I'm also a Disneyland nerd. Keep up the good work.
This really describea how I used to feel... For the longest time I wanted to do film and photography but was really scared about what others would think about my work, but Casey's videos really inspired me to start and now I'm 4 months in. Grinding away at new informative videos, people, and other ways to get better. I've been going out and really practicing hard to get where I want. I think right now my style isnt all that unique and heavily influenced by Casey and Peter, but i think over time I'll find it.
Great message dude, people love to talk smack and hate on others, especially on the internet. Strong people lift others and share, and the not-so-fortunate tend to try to bring others down. Keep killing this channel and inspiring people, man.
I was one of those people in a precious video that said you were a CN copycat. And you know what, you are right. We all use what other people do to inspire ourselves to do something. Do what makes you happy and keep creating amazing content. This is my go to channel so I’ll be one of the first, or the first to apologize!
I love and I admire both of you for who you are, it does not matter if you are inspired by Casey or whoever, you are original, insistent and everything you do is beautiful and inspiring for me. I'm sure Casey also admires the work you do :D
Matti, I never commented before, but this one is worthy. Of course you know this, don't worry about the haters. I want a boosted board too! You are the man, and in ways, I want to imitate you too. We all add our own style. To call it copying, is the wrong word.
first of all yes make some merch! i would totally rock a travel feels pin or patch! second i wouldn't say you are a Casey wanna be because your edit style is soooo different and your music choice is really different, also your channel covers very different topics! i subscribe to both of you guys and love you both! keep it up and you inspire me in my own voice and style
Preaching to the choir 😊 I know I'm unique and we are all! Just gotta do what you want without other people caging you into something your not. Stay tuned for merch!
The only thing that Casey, Matti, and Peter have in common is that they're "F*****G AWESOME" keep up the epic/insperational videos and ignore the haters!
Travel Feels, Peter McKinnon and Casey Neistat will always be the one of the amazing youtubers we know. You are all creative, unique and inspiring lots of people in your own ways with your awesome videos. Maybe hoping to see a collab of you, Peter & Casey in the future... riding on your boosted boards for sure! Learning a lot from you guys! Keep on inspiring!
I dont know why ppl would say youre coping casey? We all learn from your channels and use the tech and techniques in the field we learn about here. Thanks for the knowledge and tips man. I just completed my first paid travel job all the way in Alaska! Looking forward to the next adventure and being able to get all this cool stuff on my own one day too! Thanks again to you and Peter McKinnon you guys inspired me to pursue my passion in photography and my goal was to get paid to travel and fly my drones and take pictures. It's happening!
Nothing wrong with taking something that works well and using it to help build what you do!... Also this whole channel is about taking knowledge another youtuber has that you can apply to build your (my) own skills.
Love your content Matti! Would love (from a Swedish point of view) to see more of what Canada have to offer and crazy collabs with different kind of creators 🙌🏼 you stepped up your game latley, and I love it 🙏🏼
Very nicely spoken about the comparing yourself with others. It's true. I also tend to compare myself with you and Peter, but in a good way. More like, you guys are inspiration for how to live like you want! I'm not into blogging but i love the way you think about life! Cheers!
Love this video! I pull my inspiration from Casey, and try to build my own brand. Everyone pulls inspiration from someone, but thats how you start your creativity, and start building your own ideas!
Awesome video! Makes me feel more comfortable to be inspired by someone else and produce content. Sometimes it’s easy to worry - if I show myself breaking for coffee will people say I copied Peter? Doesn’t matter. He inspires me to be myself when I’m on camera and we both like coffee. It’s their problem not mine. Thanks Matti!
Great, buddy. The best gift you have is in your mind and a friend like Peter who support each other in aspect of spirituality, photography and videography. 👍🤙
Who Else Struggles With Comparing Themselves To Other People???? The Struggle is REAL 😂

SAME HERE! Best YTBs on the web!
Me too
same here. Really helps when you are starting out.
Two of my favourite youtubers talking about one of my favourite youtubers..... maybe I have too many favourites 🤔
Edit By Goughie that also true with me
Haha awesome 🙌
Vitor Miranda UFC same!!!
Exactly my thoughts. :-)

First rule in life : don't listen to haters that waste their time writing mean comments. Do you, always.
Two in a Canoe keep your head up and do what you want. You eill find love out here regardless
Love this!! Comparison is the killer of creativity!!
🙌
UA-cam is also killing creativity with all its terms and regulations.
Just in time you came up with this video. I was JUST editing my video, where I am enjoying a cup of coffee and I was thinking that I should probably take it out because they will chase me around that I am trying to copy Peter... well, I love coffee too... and I don't want to drink something else instead... but I'll still take it out as I don't like nasty emails... lol... but great point Matti... thank you..
Awesome video . And about the boosted board it’s a prop and a mode of transportation that everyone uses . I am with you keep making good videos .

Yea man keep at it! You'll find your place but it'll be different from all the others
THUMBS UP IF YOU THINK HE SHOULD COLLAB WITH NEISTAT!
Oooh that would be fun!
go on now we are waiting
What are you doing with your old MacBook? I have a falling apart 2010... and it's super hard to edit and render and wait. Price?
You and Peter have been putting out some LEGIT vlogs lately. And I think it's because of all the hard work you both put in. Thank you!
Great inspiration! Comparison is a HUGE struggle of mine!

For being so true to us about the Casey thing, I really want give you an applaud. Creators like you deserve more!
PLEASE MAKE A REVIEW/TUTORIAL OF THE APERTURE DEC, I NEED IT!!!!! how does it work in photo mode to.
Random, how did you like shooting with the Canon C200 a few weeks back? Really interested in it!
Review coming soon! great camera for suree
I was soo happy to see Peter Mckinnon!
Biggest surprise of this Vlog :D
Do you edit on the Macbook Pro or do you have something else? I've also got a 2012 model, fully loaded but I find it too slow to edit 4k.

Does it go faster when you hit the arrows? ;) Thank you for the great message, I needed this even though I never realized it myself.
I really need a Macbook but am very low on cash....any chance you'd sell your old macbook?
You're videos are getting better every time! Loved this mail time segment!
Well said about just being who you are and what your doing, influences are all around. Thats what builds someone’s character is influences in life.
I really enjoy yours and Peter's videos - I learn a lot (I will put those tricks to use), and you seem like really awesome guys. Regards from Norway!
Thanks!
Great video Matti!! So right, people are always comparing there self with others. Be yourself and feel happy with who you are.
Love your mindset guys. It's good to hear that for aspiring youtubers. Much love from Paris
Yea its best to just be inspired by other people!
Shawn Patey yes yes yes and yes! Such a great way to put it! I definitely relate 🙌🏼
Keep up the good work.
i understand trying to make sure you not copying anyone elts but i feel creativity has left youtube.
Matti you are improving a lot as a youtuber! It's a pleasure to watch you growing 😁
I would buy a "learn, make, repeat" shirt!!
🙌
I would buy that t-shirt too😁😁
It's almost midnight here in the Philippines. Was about to sleep but I got notifs, so here I am. 🙌🙌🙌
I love and I admire both of you for who you are, it does not matter if you are inspired by Casey or whoever, you are original, insistent and everything you do is beautiful and inspiring for me. I'm sure Casey also admires the work you do :D
Nice video! The boosted boards really are so much fun! I can’t wait for the extended battery it’s going to be a whole lot more fun!
Matti can you do a quick review on the backpack please? Really interested in buying one!
Matti, I never commented before, but this one is worthy. Of course you know this, don't worry about the haters. I want a boosted board too! You are the man, and in ways, I want to imitate you too. We all add our own style. To call it copying, is the wrong word.
Did you vlog with that monster canon C200??
i snagged yours as well as peters presets. I didnt know you guys were that close. They go well together.
first of all yes make some merch! i would totally rock a travel feels pin or patch!
second i wouldn't say you are a Casey wanna be because your edit style is soooo different and your music choice is really different, also your channel covers very different topics! i subscribe to both of you guys and love you both! keep it up and you inspire me in my own voice and style
Really diggin your stuff Matti. Keep doing your thing
I just can`t stop subscribing to Canadian youtubers :) You and Peter are awesome!!!
Love your work bro! I agree, you just have to be you and tell your own story! Enjoy the boosted board
Thank you 🙌
If we talking about filmmaking Casey is out you guys rock! probably my favorite 2 channels! you guys.
When people say hey your like Casey I laugh and then say thanks. Because it's quite a compliment
You should do more vlogs like this. Tutorials are great but I think this is something that could grow!
Nothing wrong with taking something that works well and using it to help build what you do!... Also this whole channel is about taking knowledge another youtuber has that you can apply to build your (my) own skills.
Hi bro im trying to grow my channel and i was wondering can you help me out and show me a directions of some sort maybe?
really appreciate it!
Josh
Awesome work as always, Matti, and a great message too.
Love your content Matti! Would love (from a Swedish point of view) to see more of what Canada have to offer and crazy collabs with different kind of creators 🙌🏼 you stepped up your game latley, and I love it 🙏🏼
Awesome video man. Keep making great content and brush off any negativity that comes your way. Cheers to your success.
Great to see Peter here.... keep boosting Mattih!
What print is that on the wall? Great vid as always Matti, Cheers from Finland!
Do you have to be good at riding skateboards to ride a booster board?
Does anyone know?
Are they also good in a hilly city?
I needed to hear this...now time to create! Thank you Matti!
omg its sooooo good to see peter and you in one video!!
Really enjoyed the content today Matti!
Also...yes, we'd buy merch!
i love Peter more than Caisey, but this makes me wanna travel more.
Thanks for the nice contents Matti. ☺
Thanks Rico 🙌
Dude did you do a video with the DEC? Super keen to see what your take on it is!
I came from Peter's channel but I'm really glad I subbed yours two, both of of you guys have some really awesome content 👌
I know this is an old vlog now, but the messages in this one is super good and still important to remember in 2019 :) Love your work btw ;)
Well said travel feels! Thank you for clearing things up about comparing to others!
Can't wait to see peter's perspective! 😂
