I think of a video like a 5 paragraph essay. Thesis is my intro (what i'm going to do in the video) and my 3 paragraphs are my arguments and proof of arguments and my 5th is conclusion.
New music per paragraph to keep the flow moving and ya, bob's your uncle. 15 years working as an editor for long/short documentary film/scripted tv has allowed me to break it down.
Of course this isn't the rule as it is a guideline. For me the final re-write is in the edit and no amount of planning can prepare me for every scenario...but that's how ideas evolve and often that spontaneous epiphany is all you need to really elevate your video but ultimately what am I trying to say and how will my audience find value. Period. Story is the hardest part of any video, you can be technically perfect but narratively imperfect and it won't track.
I will also speak to doing some long and short form documentaries that the original "plan" is often blown apart when you get in the field and realize something isn't working as you thought. Or be agile enough during the editing to realize your thesis is weak and need to revise it. It's an evolutionary process that time in the edit will reveal. I speak to this from personal experience.
It's one of the biggest things doc directors discover early on is how everything they had planned will be blown apart, the magic comes from picking up the pieces.
Depends on the format though. I agree planning is necessary absolutely but you can't plan all of it and need to leave room for a possible revelation that elevates the narrative.

Agree with you so much. My first independent shoot did not turn out how I planned it at all. I wrote such a detailed plan, from angles to storyline. When I was shooting I knew my idea of this video was far fetched. Once I started to edit, I obviously realized how hard it is to get the result I had in my head. I ended up getting a video that I liked much more than my initial plan, but I still wished I could been more 'prepared'.
I still have very little experience and I want to grow so much more. But I feel like I can learn more with people surrounding me on a shoot. Just out of interest, do you shoot solo or in a small/big crew?
If anyone reading this is from Cape Town (Or anywhere in SA), let's team up and learn from eachother!
Ok enough with the rant :)

I love this video. I’ve watched it over and over and have to admit, out of all of your videos, this may be my favorite. I struggle with planning, over-planning, not having a plan and talking to the camera too much (which leads to never ending edits), and simply planning paralysis.
I burned out and stopped making videos because I never planned, I was consumed by thinking my gear sucked, and I just have not put in the work to do it better. It’s not my gear, it’s me, it’s lack of a plan, and thinking sub counts matter when I know story is best.
This video is a breath of fresh air and is helping me rethink my channel.
    Thanks, Matti.

I'm all aboard the "simple train." Love your content, Matti. I always appreciate videos like this, where something is broken down to the bare bones, I guess. Sometimes it can feel like creators - from varying topics - forget to share the beginning steps of things when they're teaching something, and jumping to step 5, if that makes sense.
Not to say you can't teach intermediate level or advanced things. Create what makes you happy, always. Reiterating, but I think I'm among many who like and appreciate "the simple" things as well. =)

this is a fantastic, basically a guaranteed, low risk, approach to making watchable content. And then if you are sharing something that highly relates to what you end up doing then even better! thanks for sharing!

I love your description of the 3 act play - I've always heard that the 2nd act introduces conflict, and the 3rd act resolves it. But not every video has conflict, so it's good to hear that the 3 act play still works, without the conflict.

BUT this second year is different, I'm concentrating the content to topics and keeping it short and to the point. Thanks so much! I'm just getting started with vlogging and I think this is one of the most useful tips on storytelling I've seen so far.
I went out to see the Paavo Nurmi Games the other day. I had some idea of what I was going to shoot and talk about and also how I would preferably have it in the final vlog, but when the day was over, I realized that I never made a plan how to make the story in my head to be captured. And now I'm stuck thinking how I could possibly make the story complete without being able to go back to last Tuesday...
However, thanks again! Also, if you have any extra time, olisin todella kiitollinen jos voisit katsoo mun videon loukkaantuneen pikajuoksijan treeniviikosta ja antaa palautetta lyhyesti. :D

One problem I found with planning you never get the good impromptu stuff in your Vlog by planning ahead and its also hard when for example the video is not the main reason you traveled somewhere for example, but just a side thing you do. In cases like these I try to tape as much as I can and then try to get the story out of that.

I have learned so much from you. I hope one day you do a meetup in Las Vegas and I get to shake your hand and tell you thank you!

This is so good. I’ve done some vlogs where I just film the day and then figure out the story after it’s happened and it is sooooo time consuming. Not efficient at all lol

I am the only one that would like to see a screenshot of his plan? Just to give an idea how much Matti plans it out? I recognize the level of detail will vary depending on the person, but I think it would be helpful :)
