Hey! Matti's wife here. I recently told Matti that I secretly watch all his youtube videos, not just to support him but to actually learn something about film making for myself. Some people would be surprised to know that around the time we met, I was actually into filmmaking. I bought a camera, and Matti taught me how to shoot and edit. 2 weeks after I posted my first "restaurant" video, I surprisingly landed a pretty sweet job for a big company. Unfortunately, that money came too quick in my "video career" and my "gap" doubled in size. I quit the whole filmmaking soon after. It's been 5 years since and I've tried to get back into it but my unrealistic expectations of where I want my skills to be and what I want my work to look like have been a huge hindrance. I have so much footage on my computer that has accumulated over the years and have not been edited. This morning I watched this video and I find myself inspired and ready to try again. This simple piece of advice can be applied to any skill. If you read this long post, I'm curious to know if you too had a similar experience. Is there a dream of yours that you quit too soon because you felt your skills were lacking? Do you think its time to start that up again? Life is so short and I can't keep wasting precious time telling myself I wish I could do this and that when I have the internet to teach me everything I need to know to actually make that a reality. So here's to learning about editing, stop motion, how to make a proper recipe video and everything in between! What better time than now to start living life and filling that time with things I actually want to do!
Well said Cess! And to think, at first I thought I didn't have enough time to watch this video. And with such great comments too! So glad I found the time.
so true, you can learn everything by yourself. Problem with most people sadly is that they don't start to create just because they think it's not good enough or they will get negative feedback on it..just do it. just found your channel..great content!
Very inspiring. Another thing that a lot of people fail is not to believe that they can make good videos with cheap equipment. They are always waiting to buy a more expensive camera as if that were the solution. It help of course, but it's not the most important thing in the world. As you said, you just have to learn, make and repeat. #learnmakerepeat
Totally! Good gear helps but if you havent been learning and making then its pretty useless and can actually distract a lot. They think they are getting better cause they have better gear which isnt true at all.
Jorge Miranda id like to correct your statement from "cheap equipment" to "cheap cameras." Using a 300 dollar dslr has taught me that i dont need an expensive camera, but my computer has taught me that im not gonna get anywhere fast when it takes me a straight day to colour grade a minute of video due to slow render times.
Yesterday I was shooting a video and experienced a problem I have...my footage just looks so much cooler in my head :c then in real life it's sadly not as good :/
Man, Love this video and love you haha! Its so true, this applies to more that just film making but everything in life! I found your channel recently and have been learning so much! My wife and I have a small channel and are looking to doing more travel and blog films and I'm learning so much from you! Keep it up , and thank you!
Thanks for this video! I needed this. I'm someone who really wants to get into film making and thinks that everything I do is never up to my standards after I finish it. Thank you and keep up the awesome videos!
Films are just moving images, and as a photographer you probably already know how to make a good image - composition, lighting, all this colour stuff and so on. Actually, in film schools (at least in Russia) future cameramans and DPs in the first year of study do not shoot video, and they don't touch video cameras at all - they shoot photos, and learn about all this photography things. Next, they shoot a series of photos connected with a story they a trying to tell. After that they shoot static shots on video camera without camera movement and without cuts, despite there is must be something happening in the shot. They are learn tell a story with just one shot. Then there is a static shots and cuts, and a story, and so on, and so on. This is how they progress, step by step. But nevertheless photography is a key. And you already have this key to make a good films! Just start making a moving photography, lol. Note, that Director of photography has a 'photography' in the title :). Hope this helps somehow. :)
Wow... made me reflect on one of the first videos I made. It was a commercial for a motorcycle shop. I was zooming in and out all over the place. I was able to get some very nice shots once the creativity kicked in. Thanks for the video and memories.
Great video, Matti! Had to laugh for that ice water swimming part but it truly is a huge part of our culture though!!! I've worked as a part time videographer by making weekly video series for a national newspaper for past couple years while I'm still in high school and all I can think is how to make better and better videos!
I was considering putting down the camera. Lost the inspiration. But after watching this, it has given me a sense of direction and rekindled the fire. Thanks for the "Visdom".
Wow man i really needed this, sometimes i feel stuck, i took your advice and got my Skillshare membership, thank you for taking your time to give free knowledge to others, the world need people like you, my best wishes my friend!
thank you so much for such videos. Because I mostly compare myself to filmmakers, just like you! And always find myself in the position of thinking I will never be able to do such videos. But everyone starts at the bottom until they rise and shine!
Great video I found this very encouraging. I will definitely taking heed of this advice with filmmaking. It's so daunting getting starting and fending off negative self talk telling us we can't do it when deep down we know we can! I also love Norway and would love to visit not only because of the amazing scenery or proximity to my home, Ireland, but also because it is home to my favourite band a-ha! Best music IN THE WORLD!
I’m going to film school because I literally cannot make any friends in the industry. The problem isn’t that I’m not amiable or sociable. I just keep meeting the wrong people. People that aren’t serious about filmmaking, they just make videos for fun or for the small chance they’ll become famous. It’s hard to be surrounded by hobbyists when you want a career
Really great information! What made me start is the promise I made to my self which is to travel atleast once a month and film everything. I have a full time job and I'm only doing it for entertainment and obviously memories. I love it! :)
Just starting out. We'll see where i am in 6 years. I've always taken photos but never owned a pro camera. Just bought a Nikon D3100, because I'm poor, but i know after lots of reviews its a good starter. Between you and several other photographers/cinematographers, i think I've learned quite a bit to get me started.
Thanks for this video. Very inspiring for me as a complete beginner in videography. I'm learning with every minute of footage I shoot. This is just what I needed to hear, to focus on learning and making... I find it frustrating when I look back at footage that I thought would be good but isn't at the standard I want. This video has made me realise that this is actually a good thing. To strive to be better with each video I make. Thanks man, keep these videos coming. 👍
Have recently discovered your channel and it’s fast become a ‘go to’ whenever I have time to learn a bit more about filming and cinematography. I find your approach and encouraging attitude a really positive experience that puts me in a ‘let’s do this!’ Frame of mind. I get that you will be getting some passive income via UA-cam for the effort you clearly put into these, but regardless, it’s obvious that you are genuinely passionate about helping others up. Good on you - Respect!
TravelFeels, thanks for the inspiration! Really helpful stuff! There is no greater motivation than to hear 'you've really improved' or 'your skills have come a long way'. This feedback has really pushed me to think of new ideas and projects to film
Learn - Make - Repeat is great advice, and is probably true in a lot of circumstances! Thanks man :) Cool to see your progression - hope I can show the same progression in 6 years from now, haha ;)
Thank you so much for this and the link to the Ira Glass video, simply mind blowing and eye opening stuff for me!!! I will now go pick up my camera and go shoot!!! Thanks again!!!
I'm really into sports photography, and have had a Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram account, and am considering starting on UA-cam, but the fear of being in front of the camera is real. I have now bought a microphone to have better audio, so I have little excuses left I suppose. Thanks for your hard work Matti, these videos help, and it's cool you don't beat around the bush. PS - I added another comment similar to this in reply to your question, but got an error. Hope I'm not double posting!
Hi Matti! I hope you could notice me on this comment. Im new to your channel and I was fascinated on your inspiring words even from your oldest videos. I've been wanting to pursue filmaking since highschool but my desire had just stopped as my parents was not capable in paying expensive tuition fees for film school so I just pushed myself to forget what my first love is. Now that Im ready and starting to do it regularly, I will try my best to be a great filmaker like you so that when time comes, you will be able to watch my art and become happy that you helped people like me to grow. Thank you.
This video just BOOOSTED me. Thanks a lot! I've been making photography for several years now (not professional) Few months ago, I've decided to teach myself filmmaking. On the Internet like you did. And with the help of people like you. I recently started my UA-cam channel. Mostly because it gives me deadlines and a way to push harder. Also because you know that other people will see what you're creating, so you wanna make good stuff. Anyway, thanks a lot !
Wow, you're awesome. You're really awesome. I really needed this, thank you so much. It's inspiring to hear that you make such great videos (even 6 years ago) with any equipment. I think beginners these days get so caught up on gear/equipment, resolution, higher resolution (4K), even higher resolution (6K), instead of focusing on composition, shots, storytelling. You've confirmed that I have all the gear I need to make great videos. You've definitely earned my subscribe. Thanks!
Great video man! I can relate to this video entirely. I am still at the point where I know I have good taste but it doesn't quite show in my films yet. I know I have improved greatly from where I first started, and I also know that I love learning about filming, cinematography, etc. I am glad to see that others realize that things are very possible even without schooling. I make a point to learn as much as I can everyday when it comes to film making. Thank you for this video.
Hey Matt, thank you for making this video. And definitely thank you for being authentic and sincere. I can actually feel it that you want everyone that watches this, to improve. Thanks! have a nice weekend! =)
Hey Matt, Watch you on Peter’s vlogs and was checking out the Epidemic Sound blog and watched this video! Great stuff! Love your eye and your vids! As for me, vlogging in my channel, a Family Friendly Disney heavy channel and considering giving daily vlogging a go. Thanks for doing what you do, I enjoy your stuff a lot! Merry Christmas!
Thank you very much for sharing bro. You're right, me too, I never have or went to film school. But I try make film and I trust my senses to do it. I was very happy for my first film I made, It was a wedding of my friend.
Matti, exactly what I needed to hear today. Thank you for your message. I've recently started following Peter McKinnon which has lead me to you. I'm trying to transition from graphic designer to photographer/videographer. Thank you for your encouraging words.
Creative Generalist! Professionally it was graphic design, then 3D animation/illustration, ad agency art director here in Toronto for a few years, and now motion graphics artist. Both videography and photography have always been on the side (with my start being skateboard and BMX films in high school, when I started some formal education in photography). Industrial design, and even interior design have also been paid areas I've been involved with. I've only been asked once what school I went to (since graduating from design school 92'). Clients or employers have for the most part only been interested in previous work I can show them, and what results I can deliver.
Awesome Vid !! Vlogging has really helped me on the MAKE side things since i started with video this year, you get so much footage to play with and learn heaps in the process
actually I go to film school right now... don't like it at all and it costs a lot of money. so watching such videos makes me insecure about it! But I really like your work, it motivates me and teaches me more than film school. I hope I can get there some day... so thank you!
Thank you for inspiring me. You have impacted so much to get back in Editing or Filming Videos again. Keep up the good work I will be rooting for you bro!! :D
I would like to say that, maybe for those kind on films\videos you really don't need to go film school or art academy, but if you want bigger like cinema world, you definitely should go art school.
A day ago, I was just looking at my 60fps footage and thinking "Damn, I wish I could make it slow and buttery without spending a couple of paychecks on a camera". The rest of the video is awesome too, but that plugin made my day :) Matt, you rock as always!
very helpful video ! as someone who is just starting out creating my own content and films this definately gives me a good insight into how to make my films a better quality. Thankyou :)
guys got to understand the difference between having an education and building your skill ...I guess this explains why there are more educated Africans today than many others who keeps complaining African immigrants are taking their jobs.....you need an education banking ur skill to get your foot at most important job doors that's especially if you dont have industry connections..this is why I just enrolled into a film school though I already have years or experience in audio / visual...hope this help someone
Always good stuff man, just so awesome, I started off with a cellphone and man I learnt so much during that time. When I got my first camera I had to learn what the dials meant and camera terminology, then I realized how much more there is to learn. I could totally relate to everything you say bro.
TravelFeels yes indeed, and I think the greatest skill we all learn by this process is the power of manipulation, as we basically learn by trial and error, with not much guidance like film school does. So we understand more deeply the importance of always learning and making.
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I've learned so much and have been so inspired by you and Peter McKinnon that I actually was put in charge of our company's Instagram page! I look forward to learning more, doing more, and improving everyday .
Hey Matti, many thanks for the tips. Great video. I'm new to videography; could you please make a video on the most appropriate settings vs lens to use on a gimbal when following/tracking a subject. I tried to shoot a tracking scene and the subject was difficult to keep in focus. I'd really appreciate if you could shed some light on this. Thank you.
WOW! I think you are very correct in all you say, hope everyone is listening to what you have to say. Great advices and great inspirations coming from you:)
Love your channel man. Can you do a video on how to create an online presence? Or how boost it without spamming lol. You and Pete's videos have truly sparked my motivation to put out vids. You guys rock.
Hey! You're Finnish right? Another Finnish content creator here. More like vlog stuff, but definitely learning all the time to make better videos for my audience. You just got a new subscriber. 😀
hell yeah... you ignite the spark in me ... thank so much. that's what beginers need to hear .... thasts realy inspiring and encouraging thank you so so much :)
Hey guys I'm curious what kind of creative are YOU??? Videographer? Photographer? Painter? Graphic Designer? Artist???
I think all we need is creative, and dreams to be Video/photographer,designer,artist.
a very beginner videographer & photographer
TravelFeels videographer
Very beginner lol but its ok

I have the best wife 😍
Cess H follow your dreams! life is short and I plan to quit my day job soon after I save up enough money and pursue photography/videography 120%!
Best comment made in 2017!! 🙌🏾 #LiveLife
Well said Cess! And to think, at first I thought I didn't have enough time to watch this video. And with such great comments too! So glad I found the time.

just found your channel..great content!
I'm like that too. I do create stuff but never feel confident about it lol
One of the most encouraging videos you’ve made, Matti! Much appreciated!

+Teo cr don't worry everyone goes through that! That's the hard part but it gets better and better 🙏
+TravelFeels ok thanks💪 I wasn't planning on giving up😏 :P
That’s the part of filmmaking stage I’m going through now
This is really inspirational. Gonna apply these 3 rules - LEARN, MAKE and REPEAT!
Do it! Definitely worth it 🙌
One of the most inspiring talk. I absolutely love your channel, truly a breath of fresh air 😊
Man, Love this video and love you haha! Its so true, this applies to more that just film making but everything in life! I found your channel recently and have been learning so much! Thanks man! 🙏
I just want to thank you for taking the time to make this video. It's so comforting & encouraging!
The most down to earth youtuber I have come across ! Keep doing the good stuff. Cheers mate !
+John Fernando wow thanks man! Means a lot 🙏👍
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!! I really needed this! GOD BLESS YOU!! GREAT THINGS WILL ALWAYS HAPPEN TO YOU!!
Thanks man. This encourages me to get out there and start shooting again. Been brushing up on skills, but need to make, lol. So simple.
you've come a long way, mate. Congratulations! Very inspirational, thank you. I'm singing up to skillshare right now :-)
Your 6 years ago videos are better than my today videos...
I'll stick to photography lol.
+smokey267 haha nothing wrong with that!

smokey267 but 6 years from now you may become AMAZING
Wow... made me reflect on one of the first videos I made.
I've worked as a part time videographer by making weekly video series for a national newspaper for past couple years while I'm still in high school and all I can think is how to make better and better videos!
haha its a greatttt thing! Thats awesome 🙌 Use that and learn as much as you can and keep making
TravelFeels Thanks, sure I will!:)
You are a true inspiration. I enjoy all your films and tutorials. Finally, I am a beginner at something again.
I was considering putting down the camera. Lost the inspiration. But after watching this, it has given me a sense of direction and rekindled the fire. Thanks for the "Visdom".
I still have a 60D, my first DSLR. Bought it used from Craigslist years ago, but now Im ready to upgrade to a Sony a6500 or something similar.
Awesome sounds good 👍
Wow man i really needed this, sometimes i feel stuck, i took your advice and got my Skillshare membership, thank you for taking your time to give free knowledge to others, the world need people like you, my best wishes my friend!
thank you so much for such videos. Because I mostly compare myself to filmmakers, just like you! And always find myself in the position of thinking I will never be able to do such videos. But everyone starts at the bottom until they rise and shine!

Love this advice! Life is learning, doing then repeat
Heck yea! 🙏
Really great information! What made me start is the promise I made to my self which is to travel atleast once a month and film everything. I have a full time job and I'm only doing it for entertainment and obviously memories. I love it! :)
Awesome! 🙌 Keep doing it
Just starting out. We'll see where i am in 6 years. I've always taken photos but never owned a pro camera. So simple but so important to realize! 🙏
same here
Your expressions in this video are very real and feels good..especially showing your past videos.
Thanks for this video. Very inspiring for me as a complete beginner in videography. I'm learning with every minute of footage I shoot. Great video! Personally I would love to see more videos like this, explaining the industry and maybe more about your story!
+skansown2 thanks man! Definitely will do some more
THANK YOU VERY MUCH MATTI HAAPOJA FOR INSPIRING AND MOTIVATE ME MUCH❤🎉🇵🇭

Thanks for sharing. Yes, Norway is the place in the summer!
This was such a great and inspirational video. I so needed to hear this right now. Thank YOU!
Perfect!
Great to see the difference between the two videos. A lot of it seemed to be pacing and editing. Nice work.
Thank u very much.. this Video definitely gave me the push that I needed .. thank you all the way from Saudi Arabia 😊

I wanted to tack on a question. What was your favorite source for learning color grading? I couldn't find any questions below about this. Thanks!
Thankyou dude! Always make something useful for other people in your videos! Keep it up

I am from Norway and I found it really cool that you like Norway so much.
Love your way of teaching, huge fan man
Thank you so much for this! Just what I needed to hear.

Totally! Vlogging is a really great way to learn to shoot and edit and do it often. Learn make repeat! Just leave some time for the learning 🙌
I have no experience in these but I've always loved watching travel videos I hope someday I could do these stuff ☺
Thanks so much! Start small and you'll get there
STUNNING footage! Even the one you called bad looked really good to me, lol!
actually I go to film school right now... don't like it at all and it costs a lot of money. so watching such videos makes me insecure about it! But I really like your work, it motivates me and teaches me more than film school. I hope I can get there some day... so thank you!
Thank you for inspiring me. You have impacted so much to get back in Editing or Filming Videos again. Keep up the good work I will be rooting for you bro!! :D
Fantastic!
Absolutely everything i need to know i can find on your channel!
Your a genius! Thanks Man!
I would like to say that, maybe for those kind on films\videos you really don't need to go film school or art academy, but if you want bigger like cinema world, you definitely should go art school.
Really good advice! This works for every field you would like to dive in. 👍
+Ferran Pons Sanchez totally! 🙏👌
Don't compare your way to other every one have they way
A day ago, I was just looking at my 60fps footage and thinking "Damn, I wish I could make it slow and buttery without spending a couple of paychecks on a camera".
The rest of the video is awesome too, but that plugin made my day :)
Matt, you rock as always!
Thank you for this video! It was really inspiring and encouraging!
So glad you were inspired!
And I also was inspired to go back to live in Finland
Great place ✌
very helpful video ! as someone who is just starting out creating my own content and films this definately gives me a good insight into how to make my films a better quality. Thankyou :)
guys got to understand the difference between having an education and building your skill ...I guess this explains why there are more educated Africans today than many others who keeps complaining African immigrants are taking their jobs.....you need an education banking ur skill to get your foot at most important job doors that's especially if you dont have industry connections..this is why I just enrolled into a film school though I already have years or experience in audio / visual...hope this help someone
Thank you so much for sharing this. I hv just started making my first video (for school work though) and this video is really helpful!!!
So beautiful Norway, So great your tutorial is. Thank you
Norway is absolutely awesome. I wouldn't mind imigrating there in the future.
Always good stuff man, just so awesome, I started off with a cellphone and man I learnt so much during that time. When I got my first camera I had to learn what the dials meant and camera terminology, then I realized how much more there is to learn. I could totally relate to everything you say bro.
+Tilt Hat Productions so good! Yea that's exactly how it goes. You learn it but by bit and by making you internalize it and learn even more
TravelFeels yes indeed, and I think the greatest skill we all learn by this process is the power of manipulation, as we basically learn by trial and error, with not much guidance like film school does. So we understand more deeply the importance of always learning and making.
What an Inspirational video man.........full of positive energy.....Thank you
Thank you, thank you, thank you!
Thank you.
Love your videos. Thank you for all of your help.
Having fun is the key answer 😍😍😍have fun /learn /practice and learn
