      I like your stuff too!the only thing that I notice that is in a great deal of youtube clips are jump cuts. One or two I can live with but some people put them every 3-5 seconds and they drive me mad very distracting. Anyway keep up the great content

    There is so much setup for a lot of b-roll footage that people never see. Doing a lot of prep work for small snippets of footage. Worth it though. Totally worth it

      Yep 100% truth

    • @GadgetJohn
      @GadgetJohn 6 років тому +8

      Too true, for every 1 second of final video I must have 30 seconds of b-roll video and setup time, and yet it's still not enough sometimes. 99% of youtube viewers will never see the work that goes into each video creators make. Such a shame we get hate comments after putting in such hard work.

    So, I'm getting ready to start my own channel, and through out the planning process, learning how to shoot b-roll, and actually going out to shoot b-roll has been the most fun I've had with my camera in a long time. Even if you don't shoot videos, or vlog, shooting b-roll can be a blast. Great video Matti!

    I love and appreciate that you talk more about the creative process in these types of videos, because I can learn the technical side from a lot of different places but in terms of learning the thought process, it doesn't come as easily. This one was simple but very helpful.

    Matti, I’m happy you made a video on this. Being an amateur I know that Broll is important but getting good Broll has been difficult for to do. Like you say, It’s all trial and error and I need to realize that I’m not going to start out making sweet cinematic Broll like yours. I need to stop dragging my feet and just start somewhere. Anyway, thanks for keeping me inspired.

    Hi Matti, love your work, this is a great video! When I film B-roll I usually start from one setting shot, like a medium shot of the subject, then I do all the different details. When an object is involved I try to think about what sounds remind me the most of that object, for example if I'm filming the preparation of a cyclist I'll film the shift whit a gear change, the tire on the road, and the the brakes. With this technique I can bring the attention of the viewer to the subject of the interview firstly with the words of the interview itself, then with sound and lastly with the image :)

    You and Pete are my favorite for learning and utilizing techniques with my own work. This is awesome. I love playing around with broll

  • @CollinAbroadcast
    @CollinAbroadcast 6 років тому +8

    My tip is just film all your broll at 100fps or above. You can always speed up, but will have shitty footage if you try and slow it down. There's so much you can do once you have that buttery smooth footage. Edit: film it all on a gimbal as well

    • @mattih
      @mattih  6 років тому +2

      The problem is that if you speed it up and use it all in real time your shutter speed will be way off and look messed up. But sometimes it doesn’t matter

    • @CollinAbroadcast
      @CollinAbroadcast 6 років тому +1

      Yea I mostly just use it for speed ramping anyways. But now further into your video, good tips on different types of broll for different types of videos. Not everybody is going to want cinematic shots

    That 6Dii RIG is genius ! Love that camera hack to get a shot. Depending on where you're shooting I find it easier to shoot the camera content first, put that together and when you have a clear cut go out and shoot the very appropriate Broll for that video. You don't always have the opportunity to do that (travelling, location etc) but I also get a lot of cool ideas as i'm assembling my on camera stuff. Then you can go out and shoot very specific stuff especially if don't have the time while shooting. Good tips Matti! Happy 2018

    Love the whole thing with B-Roll, and something I’ve found pretty difficult to get when I’ve been out shooting... Mostly because I hadn’t planned it as I was on a trip. As they say, if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
    It was also interesting that a tips video I’ve tried to shoot before, but it just didn’t work out, suddenly came to me in B-roll as I was watching. So I can continue to describe what I’m doing and add B-roll to show it in a more interesting and cinematic way. Closer details of setting up with mid shots showing a little more environment.
    Thanks for churning my creative brain matter Matti.
    Have an epic week
