I feel like channels like yours and Peter's are basically giving me a film degree on the side of the things im already doing! Love this and thanks so much Matti!
This is exactly why I think 360 cameras will never replace traditional cameras. It completely ignores the art of composition and framing! Great reminder, I always need to remember the importance of composition!
WeekendWarriors I agree completely, and that feature is really cool, but simply watching things in 360 I feel like there always seems to be something missing, and that is composition.
If VR cinema ever happen one day it might get there to the point where having a 360 to film might be a cool thing to have. But maybe even there filming an environment of that kind might be better to just build a 3D environment instead of trying to film the 360 environment. I don't know.... By the way what I mean by VR cinema I mean to be able to turn around and be able to look at everything there is around but not having to have a controller to interact.
Love the topic. Too much money is spent on fancy gear (which we all love I know) but the fundamental stuff just gets left out such as composition. Thanks for highlighting this Matti :-)
"My eyes were at peace with the frame." That statement is profound, dude. Stuff in my filmmaking brain is really starting to click after hearing that. Thank you.
I think this was your best video yet. You're always a pleasure to watch, but you seemed so much more relaxed and comfortable with talking to the camera this time. Love this series and your advice is always spot on. Thanks, Matti.
Why are there even dislikes? You're killing it with these feedbacks, they're very educational and I think most travel vloggers should learn at least a thing or two these days about composition instead of just accumulating excessive gear. Thanks for sharing these tips with us!
Great video. This has been the number one most helpful video I have watched on composition. I love your comparisons and find them super helpful. I look forward to trying out some of these techniques in my content. Now I feel I not only understand composition but know how I can apply it. Cheers.
I completely agree with you, its basic filmmaking. HOWEVER what is also basic filmmaking, is using composition in the WHOLE shot. For example, that drone shot of the sea where you said there is nothing to focus on, That is the whole point! Its a wide angle of beautiful scenery, your suppose to be in awe with the shot not a subject. You can't have a subject in every single shot, thats not creative.
My film professors always tell me, you have to understand the rules before breaking them. Perhaps he could have dwelled on the creative aspect of the "bad shots".
I'm so stoked you featured my video! Feedback was outstanding. Thank you so very much. It really gave me more confidence and lots of hunger to keep practising! I really can't say how happy I am 😊
Hi Matti, I discovered your channel today (after seeing Peter's night time photography tutorial, then yours on filming). Thank you sooo much for THIS composition tutorial. You have now at least 2 fans (we will share this with people in our circle) of your work and channel. I hope it will help us to improve the quality of our work with filming. Thank you so much for the extremely valuable content!
Lots of value in this video and that kind you to the people who submitted videos. They went a lot way to helping everyone understand framing and composition
One of the most important things before fancy transitions and stuff... thanks for highlighting the "lines" and the focus points, it makes sense to me now :)
Great video Maddi! I like the new angle too, its easier to watch this way with the leading lines like you said, and without the light behind your head!
I dont have a camera yet so watching your channel its the way i have to keep hype while im triying to earn some money i finally get it!! Id love to win that canon and start to put in work all the content that you have brought us!!!
Thank you for staying on the topic. The dialog composition fit the video. I did not feel distracted by anything, nothing at all....except for the advertisements. Nothing you did wrong. Thanks for the awesome lesson.
Hi Matti, I wouldn't use the word "suck" to describe how someone learning might be composing. I know how awesome you are and how much you want to help us grow. You're one of my favorites, and I don't want someone getting turned off by that and not give your channel a chance. They'd be missing out. Keep the content coming!
i really enjoy watching your videos because you give your honest opinions of each clip for us viewers to understand why you think that way. very very helpful
Helmet mounting an action cam is great for composition. Every where you turn your head to look the camera follows. and having a camera with a Gimbal or HyperSmooth stabilization is key because you don't want people to feel like it is too rough to watch.
You make some very strong points! 👌 The only thing I would differ on would be the advice on symmetry. It takes effort to create symmetry, but not as much creativity. I like compositions that took a little more time, effort, and creativity to balance out an asymmetrical shot or design. But that's just a preference of mine.
Congratulations, excellent tutorial on an unexciting topic, you have your own style, speak clearly and have a good sense of humor, you also have a new subscriber.
Your lessons, talks, vlogs posses heavy information, which really helps learners, like me. Lots and lots of things to learn from you. Can't thank you enough.
It's so funny. I met lots of people who are stuck when it's about composition...not only in film making, but for concept art and backgrounds in general. So many complain about why they don't get better or not getting enough comments and positive feedback. In the end you are good at using your gear, but when the fundamentals are not learned...or you even forgot about that you miss so many good opportunities. I mean it has a reason why Disney (specially the classics)for example are loved by so many...it's not only about storytelling, character design, fx and colours. It is about leading the eye and create a feeling through composition. And even professionals have to get back to the basics sometimes...just to remember how it works. :) . Thank you so much for sharing!!! PS: Even though Cinderella is not my favorite Disney movie...it has an incredible composition...WOAH! . Enjoy your daaay!
Really good feedback on these videos. I think often we place a shot because we think it "will look cool" when in fact it's not achieving anything. For example, the low angle shot pointing at the little rocks while the person walks away on the left. A cool perspective but the net result isn't desirable. This video also challenges us (me) because I ALWAYS want to avoid overcast, dreary days, yet these reviewed videos show how you can get some really good looks and use colour to make things pop. Awesome.
Awesome advice! One pitfall I have fallen into is that it's really easy to want to use footage that was high-effort. Time-lapse footage is really hard to trash because it's difficult to repeat and so much can go wrong. It requires the most planning of anything I have ever shot.
For the shot at the tent, I think that’s it weird because the clouds are moving towards the centre, but the tent is to the right of centre...there seem to be two focal points. Great tips, thank you!! Xx
Very interesting. Only one thing I'd like to add: you always explain why ONE shot is good or not so good, but depending of the EDITING a shot that feels off by itself can work as an element of the overall movie. I think what I want to say is that a movie isn't only a succession of independant beautiful pictures.
Matti! Big fan of your stuff. Hopefully you can remember this but, In one of your videos you were talking about how to get the 2:35 crop without using black bars. I have been searching all over for it but I can seem to find which video it was in, I would appreciate it my man, keep up the dope content! Thanks again.
I think there are some occasions where breaking from the conventional approach to framing and composition can actually help story by conflicting with what the viewer expects. You do want to be careful with experimental shots though as they can really be overdone or unnecessary.
Your videos are so cool! I am going to use your technics in my next video which will be up soon. Ever since watching stuff like this I have got way better shots.
totally agree on this. nxt time I shoot, ill pause for a while and think about the composition. 😄 thanks for this free knowledge! 😄🙏👌 simple one of the best! 👍
I only and only cannot imagine, to go out with no composition in my head. Well, yeah, truth: I made it! But before I hit the record button, at least there I going to think about it! How to work like, without?
thank you so much, i think this one is a really good one. I have learnt a lot here! quick question for you guys " Are you able to make a cool travel video without Slow Mo? "
Thanks! It feels almost all videos on film making are about software and gear. It helps In the beginning, sure, but my biggest headache are composition and flow of the film (sequencing).
Hi, I like your videos a lot. I am trying to train myself to make short videos. Can you make a video to provide composition tips for GoPro users? like wide, medium, narrow shots...
Love TF! I do have to say that I found the lenses in the background a little distracting because there are almost too many leading lines.. Great tips though! appreciate your work.
Thanks for the tips! I totally agree with you! While I am saving up money to upgrade to a better dslr, I am making the most of what I've got and focus more on composition and story, rather than what equipment I use. Great video and new subscriber to your channel!
This is the first time I've seen one of your videos. Nice. The reason the tent shot didn't work is that the smooth motion of the moving clouds in the sky gently draw your eyes to the upper center horizon. The disjointed and jerky motion of the people became static noise while my eyes were drawn to the smooth, natural movement of the clouds. - IMO -
I would really appreciate if you did a tutorial on sound design. Taylor cut did a video on "why sound is so important" and it helped a ton. However, I still think there is a lot you could cover. Rob Strok is one of the best, as is Nainoa and jacob from beautiful destinations. Would love any insight you have on how they achieve their sound design as its such high quality and adds so much depth to the video.

Thanks Matti, a great video like the rest of your stuff. Quarter way through your Udemy course and liking it very much so keep up the good works and the tips flowing.
Love your vids Travis. Can you try out one thing for me? Composition/lighting-wise, can you do a reverse key? I'm just curious how the shot would look if the camera-left part of your face is darker than the right side AND the opposite is true for the background (because the shelves are white and the curtain is darker I think just moving your key to camera-right should do the trick. This way, your face creates contrasting edges. Don't know, try it out if you're curious
4:33 Just my opinion, but I thought that there’s not really meant to be an exact focal point in that shot. For me it’s depicting the expansive nature of the area.
My head is spinning I'm so new to film making. I'm mobile UA-camr everything I do is with my phone. But still I won't stop learning this is great video

Thats how I learned! Just watching tutorials and actually getting out there and making films
This is exactly why I think 360 cameras will never replace traditional cameras. It completely ignores the art of composition and framing! Great reminder, I always need to remember the importance of composition!
Yep so true! Its an interesting tool but I dont think it will ever replace traditional film.
there's also composition in 360 videos.....
WeekendWarriors I agree completely, and that feature is really cool, but simply watching things in 360 I feel like there always seems to be something missing, and that is composition.
Philip Reber check " humble" videoclip (kendrick lamar) the part with 360 camera

3:40 it's because the island on the left takes up too much space. if it were a blank lake on that side it would look way better.

Wow... thank you for this one. Amazing tips!
It seems to me composition is mostly a matter of taste and what the purpose is. For example I think 5:55 shot was the best in regards to composition, because it wasn't the same as every other shot recorded. The shots you praised were kind of mundane in comparison.
Really love these feedback sessions. The examples really help drive the point home. Just checking you did get my submission right?
Great concept for a video, enjoyed the critiques!
Thanks man! Appreciate the help with this.
Great idea taking a look at those videos and providing tips.
