  • This is a special documentary comparing Yuri on Ice anime scenes vs Real Life figure skaters stories and the skating performances. We know that this topic could be controversial as some figure skating fans don't like people to compare the real person to the anime. However, after watching Yuri on Ice, we can be sure that the producer / author is definitely a figure skating fan too. Most of the moves/ performance depicted in YOI highly replicated the real performance in figure skating. The backgrounds of the events are so similar to the real competitions. And some real figure skaters even made a cameo appearance in this anime.
Honestly it's much better than the portray of Hollywood movies such as "I, Tonya" or Netflix show "Spinning out" when it comes to the modern figure skating representation. The problem with these 2 shows are that the producers seem not interested to find out how figure skating real scenes are in the modern 2020s centuries and use a lot of "yesterday's stories" in figure skating.
Overall, Yuri on Ice is a very well made anime and it sure introduced figure skating to a wider range of audience. But, what are those moments in the competitions drawing inspiration from? In this video, let's explore together - The real figure skaters stories (With Yuri on Ice comparison)

We saw people comparing Yuri with Yuzu. But honestly, the author simply drew inspiration from real life figure skaters' performances and create his own story. So, what are the real stories behind Yuri on ice? What competitions were the source of inspiration? Join us for the premiere of the Top 6 Anime vs Reality moments - Yuri on ice vs Real Figure Skating on 5 March, GMT 12pm. See you guys 💕

I appreciate how accurate Yuri on Ice is to real figure skating. There is another male "figure skating" anime currently airing (Skate Leading Stars), but the whole premise is ridiculous and they treat figure skating like a joke... someone who only skated as child returns and is suddenly doing quintuple jumps and a combination of a 4A+4T+4R is able to be taught and performed by multiple skaters in a few weeks. And they barely show any skating at all. Grrrr. It makes me angry since it plays into so many of the negative stereotypes about figure skating. I need the Yuri on Ice movie to finally get out of production hell and hit theaters!

OMG that sounds horrible.. Yes that's the problem with a lot of "so called" shows about figure skating. It's a drama with a figure skating as a backdrop and the producers didn't bother to find out about the actual figure skating itself.. For this, YOI is really the most accurate representation of the actual figure skating scenes and we really appreciate it.

Yuzu fans, please don’t be upset by the suggestion that the anime authors took some inspiration from Yuzuru. You know the saying: “Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.” Of course, they couldn’t have the main characters be exactly like any skaters because who’d be interested in watching the series if they knew what happed: one character wins the olympics, skates after a head on collision with another skater, wins a whole bunch of other competitions, is showered/drowning in Pooh, and is trained by a talented teddy bear. That’s nice in real life, but for an anime you need a lot more intrigue and there is no better way than making a stew with some existing ingredients and adding some new spices for a more captivating flavor. It’s fun to recognize or imagine some resemblance with what we know about these amazing athletes: they admire some fellow competitors, they work really hard, they come from all over the globe, some like meat so much that they use it as skating inspiration (we think of Shoma as one of the most sensual, lyrical, heart-touching male artist - meanwhile he could very well skate his way into our hearts while fantasizing about his next yakiniku).

as a yuzu fan myself I love that yuri on ice takes inspiration from my favourite skaters! however, I do get upset when I see a yuzu video and half the comments are 'oh em gee this is TOTALY yuuri!' or a tweet or post and the replies are all 'real life yuri on ice!' like please. Hanyu yuzuru is his own damn person, don't conflate him with an animated character. Yuri on ice it's certainly a top-quality anime movie and the producer made a hard work with it, doing all the researches in order to make it look most like reality but keeping some key differences at the same time. Through this anime it is shown the producer's passion for figure skating and I felt he wanted to transmit (especially when seeing Phillipines - Martinez Sochi 2014 story ) that if someone wants to begin figure skating, one must believe in the dream and that with work, belief, confidence, pushing limits, nothing is that impossible, it felt like an encouragement for this, which I received it as a good thing.

It's because the producers of this specific anime - Yuri on Ice is a long time figure skating fan and a famous anime producer. They also involved the real top notched figure skating choreographer to choreograph those figure skating scenes in the competitions in the anime. Most other figure skating shows are also very unrealistic.. YOI is the special one for this reason

I have been doing figure skating since I was 6 years old, but due health problems I got off of that for a while (like 2 or 3 years I didn't skate)
I started skating again I felt like I lost all my habilities I had adquired all these years, I felt so frustated.. then I saw YOI and I could relate yuri so much, I was so insecure and obsesed about my skating 'faults' because for so long, I realized i just didn't have fun doing it anymore in that time, and seeing Yuri having those problems too I felt like the preassure was not much heavy as i was feeling it before-
Now I'm still training to do my best in competitons but also not being too tough to myself :)
I'm so grateful with not only this anime also with skaters like Yuzuru or Evgenia, and even UA-cam channels like this who give inspiration day by day for the sport I'm in love since a was a child, so..

@@FigureSkatingFan I’m a huge fan of Yuri on Ice. It was one of the reasons that I dove deeper into figure skating. I would have taken figure skating lessons if only there was rink here at my home town. But I’m pretty sure that Daisuke Takahashi was the main inspiration of YOI. The conceptualization of the anime was sparked by shizuka arakawa’s gold at Turin. But since she retired thereafter, Daisuke became the main inspiration as the peak of his career was between 2006-2010. He won worlds in 2007 and was bronze at Vancouver 2010. But because of lack of funding, it wasn’t until 2016 that the anime was released. The anime was scheduled to release right after the 2010 Olympics. But even with Yuzu’s gold in sochi, they couldn’t get funding. It was Yuzu’s back to back gpf that solidified his popularity in japan and sparked investments for the anime.

and as much as i love yoi, seeing real-life figure skating, especially yuzu's, i realize the beauty of figure skating is almost uncapturable
yuzu might be one of the few instances in sports anime where reality surpassed anime, it's insane
also just a heads up, yuzu does not like being compared to yuri (prob mostly because of the fans), so if you do compare, please do appreciate his skating, because yuzu is the blueprint, not yuri!! this goes to the other skaters as well, they put in an insane amount of work and they deserved to be individually recognized for that

Thank you for sharing your wonderful movie and the story behind it.
As for the sequel, I hope it is already in the works.
I think it's great that the film focuses on the beauty of skating and the very sensitive emotions of the skaters, coaches, and supporters.
On the other hand, in reality, I feel that the organizational issues that have been smoldering for decades are coming to the fore.
In other words, it is a matter of competition scoring.
I know it's assumed that anime is for fun, but
in order for Figure Skating to be widely accepted by many people, and for many children to start skating with dreams, the current state of the sport and some of its problems must be corrected.
I hope that if this issue is raised in the next film, or even in the sequel, it will provide an opportunity to restructure the real organization.

Yes!!! He's amazing! Actually in 2014, him making the Olympic team and got into free skate was one of the biggest news for figure skating that year. It was almost all over the news --> A figure skater from a country with no winter made it into the Olympic for the very first time. But actually, there's something more to the story that time.. He made it. But he couldn't even get any government funding to sponsor him. He setup facebook fundraising and a Canadian company donated the costume for him. So that's one of the reasons his story got so big.. He was the sole bearer of the Philippines flag in the Olympic. Most people in the Philippines didn't even know Winter Olympic existed and didn't know. The Philippines government did chip in in the end after the news snowballed in the media. They felt kinda ashamed for being bashed by the media, saying something like "We have an athlete who made it into the winter Olympic for the very first time and we didn't even know it and he had to rely on donation?"...
News aside, he actually performed extremely well in that Olympic judging from his personal situation. His goal was to make it into the free skate, by being the top 24. He not only made it, but got into 19th overall. I remembered vividly that he was one of the early skaters and he was leading all the way till the next flight of skaters. Throughout the live broadcast the commentators kept referring back to his story and saying how inspiring he was.. Heard that eventually he landed some sponsorship from SM group etc. But not sure after that what happened to his career. Really hope he keeps working hard and make figure skating even more recognized and popular in South East Asia :)

And the only skating rink we have is in a mall which is a public one at that and although it’s a bit big, it incomparable to those outside of the country.
And also he’s back in training after his 2 year hiatus! Been checking his insta and he’s doing he jumps. I don’t know if he will train to qualify for olympics again but rumors says he is. He’s currently training outside of the country with his coach I believe.

I think Yuri and Yuzu are kinda similar and the author took some things from Yuzu and other skaters to create Yuri. For example the tissue box was a good reference, Yuzu has Phoo and Yuri has Maccachin. I also think the author tried to portarte this beautiful side of ice skating were all of them are good friends. Now, Javier Fernandez, Yuzu best friend, retired from competitions and he is becoming a trainer. But even though he is still close to Yuzu and that makes me feel good. Like the fact that Yuri left his Canada trainer but he was still close to Piichit.

Yes! Those were the most beautiful moments in figure skating and really glad the author portrayed them so well in the anime..

I like how Yuri was mainly based on completely different skaters, but almost all the people mention Yuzu just because of some little details like tissue box 😄

Thank you!!! Hahaha. We had been watching figure skating for very long time. And those moments that happened lived vividly in our minds. When we were watching the anime, which was very well made (the skating scenes) and once we watched the scenes, those moments were immediately recalled..

@@anastasiaanjelita2844 Thank you so much! Actually there's more in the anime scenes which we could recall what happened in real lives.. But hard to show it so didn't include in this video. Overall it's really because the producers made this anime very realistic and hence we could match like this.. Really appreciate their works :)
