- We took an alternate route to Trapper Peak and it turned out to be beautiful!
During our last trip to the Bitterroot valley and to my (Shane's) hometown, Hamilton Montana, we took a hike up to Trapper Peak, the highest peak in the Bitterroot Mountains.
Travis convinced us to take a bit of an unconventional route that his mom had taken before. It took us by beautiful Baker Lake. We also ended up going up to Middle Lake, but that was a bit of a detour. Both lakes are beautiful and, as I understand it, Gem Lake (which is just a little further up the hanging valley), is even prettier.
The last time I hiked Trapper Peak, I was in Junior High! Oddly enough, that time was with Travis too. We've definitely been friends a long time.
We love hiking around Montana, and I was lucky enough to be raised in one of the Bitterroot Valley, which I think is one of the most beautiful valleys in Montana. Unfortunately, I didn't get out into the beautiful Bitterroot Mountains as much as I would have liked to growing up. I didn't get into hiking until my last couple of years in high school, which were also my last couple of years in the Bitterroot.
We hope that you enjoy this adventure and maybe try it out yourself! We put together a specific explanation along with a Google Earth tour of the trail in order to more clearly explain how to take this route. Something we wish we had before taking on the alternative route.
Did it back in 2006, but we camped at Baker Lake. Greeted by a big thunderstorm as we arrived at the lake as daylight waned. Thankfully got the tents up before the downpour. Headed for the summit the following morning. My wife and I made it to the summit first and as we waited for the others, the clouds were gathering and the thunder was rumbling. By the time we headed back down, we would get little static discharges between our fingers and the rocks we were scrambling on. And my sister-in-law’s hair started to stand on end. Not long after we got down a little ways a very loud clap of thunder made it obvious the summit had just been struck. I decided then and there I’d never let a thunderstorm move in that close while we were on a summit ever again.
Its a great hike 8hrs round trip
I was up there in August 1985. Same little glacier was there back then.
I bet the trail was nowhere as busy as it is today!
Thanks for the share.
Nice family, beautiful video!
Thank you!
I watched this video, again! It is still awesome! I was looking for links to send to my sister in AZ and I found this channel, again. I only wish I could hit the like button again1
Thanks Eddy!
This is epic! Awesome editing and awesome footage! I would love to hike here, the scenery is amazing! 😍 Thank you for taking us with you. Really did enjoy this! 🙌🙌
Thank you so much Hox & Jones! We really appreciate the positive feedback!
Great video. Hoping to make it to Montana some time. Won’t be doing that hike though. :-)
Haha, it’s a tough one for sure! Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment Eric.
Great video! I’m passing this on to my husband who is collecting information in preparation for climbing Trapper later this summer. Are you thinking of climbing again now that you have a better route? And, have you climbed the original, or main, Trapper Peak Trail?
Thanks Diane! We appreciate the positive feedback. I’m sure we will again before too long, though we have so many hikes we want to do that we haven’t yet, or haven’t in a long time. I (Shane) hiked the standard route in 8th grade (also with Travis coincidentally).
The more you shake the rapidly pan the camera-the more 'artistic' it is. Keep up the dizzying work!
