Eruption Number 9 Will Probably Become a Reality Late This Summer

- I was holding on to the theory that the magma inflow was decreasing for as long as I could but it's no longe sensible since the numbers are quite clear about this. Eruption number 9 will most likely occur late summer or early autumn. We have been putting up a strong fight against those elements of nature but to be realistic, we can only do so much so we better get prepared for a cold winter on the Reykjanes peninsula because anything else would be pure luck, as things look now.
Some of the summer shots in this video are from projects iv'e been filming recently and many of them will be online soon.

Greetings from Iceland. Gylfi
Perhaps I'm late to notice, but many congratulations on reaching 100k subscribers! Thank you for great content Gylfi.
Thanks a ton :)
@@JustIcelandicdirectly because of your videos, I am bringing my family to holiday in Iceland 🇮🇸 next year. We are all very excited ☺️
Have fun! It's beautiful @@lisadolan689
You are Icelands best promoter! Honest, thoughtfull and positive, while deeply connected to the land and the people. Thank you.
Much appreciated with thanks from Iceland :)
I love Iceland since I was young and I got a book from Jon Svensson about Nonni!
But first in May 2022 I could follow my dream and visited Iceland and Nonnis home in Akureyri. In March 2024 I was again in Iceland (between two eruptions) and saw the beautiful Katla icecave.
I live in Germany and I will visit the tomb of Jon Svensson in cologne next.
Thank you for your beautiful reports about Iceland!
I love your Icelandic/English dialect!
Many thankful regards!!!
My best wishes for this summer to all Icelanders and the rest of the northern hemisphere…🌞☀️🌅
Much appreciated
Thank you, Gylfi. I hope the alternative hot water source works out as more than a backup and that more safe hot water and electricity sources can be added to the peninsula infrastructure as soon as possible. I also hope that Grindavik will be able to come back to life with tourism and especially fishing.
You stated a sad, likely inevitable truth about writing the power plant off, and moving forward when everyone is focused on courageous efforts to avoid this very thing. Tough position for political and financial authorities to be faced with.
Good morning Gylfi or goodnight from me just going off to bed...I feel so saddened about Grindavik I know if it was me I too would love to back to my home...however there are still the danger from all the chasms under the surface... this was a great video... you have sunshine for a change...Iceland is a bit like here suffering from the dearth of sunshine...and when it does appear we kind of drop everything and sun worship for as long as we can...I hope to see you pop up in my alerts soon ATB from Scotland 😀🌠
Thank you for the update, Gylfi, you always present the bigger picture in a very down to earth way, without sensational content. It is so sad that Grindavik is becoming a ghost town and people have lost their homes and livelihoods. It is a waiting game with no idea of the end results.
Thank you for your feedback on the eruption. We were staying at the Northern Light Inn on the 28 May this year. We love this place and have grown fond of Frederik and his establishment. E wish him and everyone in the area best of luck! We will be back soon.
Thankyou for the balanced update, my thoughts are always with you and the remarkable people of Iceland, stay safe
Thank you for the update. I agree there is no sign it will end anytime soon, one can only hope for a safer place for the next eruption. In the meantime, enjoy the lovely summer

Excellent informative update. The footage is superb. Thank you Gylfi! 😊
Glad you enjoyed it!

Of course they would like to move back.. it’s their way of life, their community, their home.
I agree that people want to return to their homes. Its no different for people who live near rivers that flood, or people who live in earthquakes or hurricane areas. Home is where the heart is.
Congrats on reaching 100k, Gylfi
🎉 thanks :)
Your updates, Gylfi are some of the best. Congrats on reaching 100,000 Subscribers. I only discovered your channel, when this Iceland stuff started happening, and I love it. Keep up the great work!

Congrats on getting to 100k subscribers! You've done a great job keeping all of us informed. I've always enjoyed your ending sentence. "I'm sending you best regards from the volcano island Iceland."
Awesome, thank you 🙂
Q: Why would anyone want to move back to Grindavik?
A: Because it's their home.
Simple as that :)
Wow, Gylfi: Love those last words: "... I do not know where I will be tomorrow; all I know is that I will be close to my camera..." What a way to live in The Present. Gretings. 🇵🇷

Maybe one day :) But not this summer, and welcome to Iceland :)
I hope your warning is heeded and I agree about your prediction for The town.thank you for all your work and congratulations on 100 k subs!!!
The power plant should be the major priority in this lull between eruptions.
Waiting until it’s submerged to address relocation is far too late.
Correct!
@@JustIcelandic I really hope the people making those strategic decisions are proactive rather than reactive.
I understand the reluctance to relocate things only to have them be spared, but the worst thing that happens is redundancy in critical infrastructure - and that is actually not a bad thing at all.
I love listening to your perspective on the issues of the Power Plant & Grindavik. I really like how you put references with boxes and captions so that we know what we are looking at. I wish you well and look forward to your next video.
My heart breaks for the people of Iceland and what they are having to and going to have to face. I can hear the sorrow in your voice too, A good job you Icelanderes are strong souls
Much appreciated...
There was an interview on Iceland Review recently where the vulcanologist indicated that the rate of magma influx under Svartsengi is getting slower with each eruption. He (Þorvaldur Þórðarson, I believe) is predicting an end to the eruptions in this specific area this summer. While the IMO graphs of magma accumulation are indeed a lower slope for the most part as you progress through this eruptive series, i dont see the same trend in the inflation numbers from the GPS data. Sadly, my guess is another eruption - around the end of August. After that... who knows! Maybe things will move to the West and spare Svartsengi and the Blue Lagoon. 🤞
Looking forward to those “tourist “ videos that you will be taking throughout the summer. Have enjoyed your past ones very much! Thanks for the great update also!😊
The next one will be online in a few hrs :)
👍👏
It is mainly a mental and emotional problem. As said in the video the power plant is sitting at the worst place and actually Grindavik too, although easier to defend, sits also at a bad, i.e. low spot.
Which normally would mean when you do that (build it there) you know that one day you have to move. Well - normally - but we humans are not normal any longer.
We have become hard and brittle, cannot go with the flow and fight everything that does not fit this mindset.
So in that sense the whole affair is a good thing as it points out our flaws.
Will we learn from it? A few might but most people rather die than change. Which will be a general problem worldwide in the coming time.

Very nice video. My prediction for #9 is 9 August. I see no slow down and believe this will continue for some years.
Look like it now, sadly
The effort put in to save the vital assets has been amazing and I give a lot of respect and credit to the construction crews for all their hard work. If the lava does eventually take the Power Station and Blue Lagoon, it won't be through lack of effort on their part.
Much appreciated and welcome :)
Thank you for the great update. I am looking forward to visiting Iceland next month.
By the way, where is this viewpoint from where you shot that great drone-vista at the end of the video?

Langjokull says hello ! Askja is still quietly percolating.
Langjökull is quite lively now, might cover it again soon
Hearing that Grindavik is nearly empty feels strange as I've been through it several times on trips to the glaciers, volcanoes etc.
Yes it's just sad to look around there now..
What a lovely view Ty for updates of the Iceland volcano....
Always welcome :)
Thank you for the update. I'm glad that you are able to chase the sun now that it's summer. I hope that the power plant is spared.
Wow, I soo needed the good weather :) but I have to admit that ithings don't look good now as for the power-plant since the last eruption ruined man important lava barriers, and this is not coming to an end soon
exactly ! The government need to start planning to protect the infrastructure for the area in the future. The area is too volatile for the foreseeable to sustain this power plant and the BL. Looking forward to your future updates on this.
Thanks and very welcome :)
how about converting the power plant into a heat collection system, that can deliver heat once covered with lava? it seems like there is an opportunity for a kind of additive geoengineering project here
It was actually done after the 1973 eruption in Vestmannaeyjar, worked for 20-30 years I think....
Thanks again for the update, Gylfi.
Enjoy the sunshine, and keep those batteries charged!
Always ready for the road :)
Absolutely on the point summary of the situation at the moment in my opinion as well. Thanks for the video and for telling it like it is!
Much appreciated :)
The scenery is absolutely stunning,it’s amazing how different it looks in summer 🙂thank you for your amazing channel and constant updates 😬🙏🏻
Thank you so much!
Werll done for this eruption Gylfi, I wait with baited breath for the next one.
Welcome :)
There's at least one more eruption in the system. Magma influx has slowed, but not by much, not enough for it to stop just yet. I believe, based on what happened just before the last eruption, that inflow increased slightly, probably from four to five cubic meters. Magma volume increased by 2 million cubic meters in five days. Previously during a similar time frame it was 1.7 million cubic meters or less. So, based on that magma influx may have increased slightly.
Also, with all the uplift, earthquake swarms, eruptions, uplift dropping again after each eruption, it's possible that the rock may have been stretched and cracked to the point that uplift was slower to respond this time.
As always, thanks for the update with earnest news and great pictures. Enjoy the sun!
Thanks, will do!
Awesome content as always! what drone and processing software do you use?
Thanks, DJI Air3 and Premiere Pro
I agree with your video.....the power plant is not in a good spot......
Welcome, lets hope we are wrong
I hope contingency plans are in place for if and when the power plant is knocked out.
I' not sure, and I don't like the uncertanity when it comes to serious issues
Thank you for your update, enjoy your summer Gylfi 🌞❤️
Thank you, I will
Ty Gylfi. I look forward to your posts.
Next one in 2-3 hrs. :)
How is the sentiment about the powerplant in Iceland? Relocating it seems like a practical (but very costly) solution to me, as its current location seems to attract lava :-) Maybe they quickly need to develop that site near the airport, get it running and then tackle the main powerplant.
Zero discussions about moving it, sadly because it's getting harder and harder to protect it, with taxpayers money!
@@JustIcelandic Mmm, they won't be able to build them barriers much higher than they already are; just a matter of time (and a couple of eruptions) before the lava will take that low point.
Hang on a minute Gylfi. If the thermal power plant were to be moved, wouldn't that mean the Blue Lagoon either loses its thermal water supply or needs to move with the power plant? I admit, I don't know a lot about either infrastructure.
Yes, those two units would go down togeather, the Blue Lagoon uses the mineral rich waste water from the power plant. I do however believe that those separate units could handle some distance and pipelines could do the trick, but I'm not sure. But this looks bad
@JustIcelandic It would be a very expensive move if that ends up being necessary.
So Grindavik is safe? Really?
maybe, bye not
Love the birds flying at 07:16
Welcome and enjoy :)
Wishing you and the residents of effected areas the best of luck & stay safe..
Much appreciated
Given the fissures that run through Grindavik (depth and width) would it be worth it...
Hope for the Best
But Plan / Act for the Worst
Well said..
Good thinking. Damage control and worst case scenario is what the leaders should plan on.
Not a boring minute on the island, right? 😳
Never :)
Can the houses in Grindavik survive without heat? It would not be possible to live there without heat but a return could be possible in a not too distant future. Take care 🙂
It would ruin the plumbings after the first frosty days and that's means a huge repair bill. And always welcome🙂

Thank you for updating of this Volcano. Followed by UA-cam Grindavik. We have visited and driven the East Southern of ICELAND for 3 days during 12-15 June. Nice summer for us. The best of exploring in our lives.. 😇
Wonderful nature as well every moment. We shall visit ICELAND again - surely 🙂

Gday everyone.......I will be in Iceland touring around the Golden Cirlcle and the Blue Lagoon (hopefully 😮) on the 6th of August......... can't wait to see everything. Having said that I am unable to really understand the awful effect that the eruption has had on the residents.
The occurrence of stoms, rains, ice, and floods at times and in unexpected places, confirms my theory the end of the (dynamic horizontal movement )which needs to balance and it sill under control to balance...
But about earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, sinkholes, tsunami, dry lakes and rivers, flow of water from the mountains and hills, explodeand of eyes water from the ground, formation of new mountains or islands, collaps of mountains ,and cracks on ground,& ,& ,&,they are out of control or balance...
Note :The earth will become like Venus...

Thank you for your usual reasoned and informative video. Of course the people of Grindavik want to return - it's their home, and I guess for most their livelihood. Congratulations on the 100,000 subs, hopefully a few more noughts in the future.
Good evening Gylfi,
Gone 😅 are the black, grey and white and color has come to Iceland.
Let’s hope they can safe important infrastructure like the power plant but nature has its own way.
Enjoy the summer and keep safe.
Thank you Gilfy for this update and informations about the geographical and geological situation of the power plant. It is very worrying for the people in Iceland... cross fingers and toes !
Enjoy the long summer days.
I agree 100% with your assessment of the long-term prospects for the geothermal power plant.
Abstract :
The energy that dominates the earth is very great, some of it is natural, like the heat of the sun and volcanoes, and some of it is human action, by cutting down trees, without replacing them and cultivating in their place...
There are five forces that control or dominate the planet...
1- The first theory (horizontal dynamic movement) and its end...
The occurrence of storms, rain, floods and snow, at unexpected times and places, is because of the expiration of this theory, which needs to be balanced...
2- The second theory (vertical dynamic movement) and its end...
This movement or force controls or dominates the earthquakes, earth cracks, drying up of rivers and lakes, earth openings, mountain collapses, and the emergence of drinking water springs on the ground...
It becomes out of control...
These phenomena increased due to the end of this theory...
The third theory: it is water that rotates the earth...
The fourth theory: the Earth's axis of rotation has tilted 2° degrees...
The fifth theory: The Earth has a new orbit...
These studies had completed and sent on July 26th 2000

Good luck, we all await more from your unique country.
Thanks :)
Thank you and greetings from the southern hemisphere winter here in Australia!
Much appreciated
My guess is around Aug 1st.
As for defense. If it keeps erupting, no berm will be enough. Eventually they all topple. You can only buy time with them. Victory if the eruption stops, certain loss if it does not stop.
I heard somewhere that Icelandic Pension Funds are invested in the blue lagoon (and maybe the power company too?). So it's a too many eggs in one basket situation. If they give up on the existing site, then the financial impact would be huge. Add in the energy/heating loss and it becomes a crisis.
I guess when they built it the logic was, no eruptions for 750 years, it'll be fine. It makes me wonder what kept it asleep for 800 years, and what woke it up. The upper chamber was likely the source of the heat for the power plant, so it was there all along.
Thank you for sharing the beauty of Iceland. I hope you get many more opportunities to chase the sun.
Looks better now and already some success :) more soon :)
thanks for the video and scenery gylfi
fair weather for your journeys and filming
best wishes for your country
You paint a very bleak picture of the future of the pensinsula. Bleak, but unfortunalely too realistic. Of course, we all hope that you're wrong!
Even if the lava doesn't overtake Grindavik, there are still those fissures that can't be filled in. It's crazy enough for former residents to move back, but absolutely insane to let foreign tourists wonder around, other than maybe some kind of guided tours. I have wondered, as long as it, too, isn't buried, could the Blue Lagoon drill it's own hot water wells to keep the pools full even if the power plant is shut down?
Considering your living on a "volcanic" hot spot, Icelanders are a resilient nation. Take it 1 day at a time. Relocating the town on higher ground must be considered.
The unfortunate reality of living where literally the entire landscape is volcanic in origin is that everything is likely temporary. Finding a "safe" place to build means understanding that it can rapidly become unsafe. Take what you can while you can while knowing the earth can take it back at any time. Heck of a way to live, but the landscape in Iceland is SO beautiful.
100k. Well done Gylfi. Well deserved for the excellent content you make
Thanks a ton 🙂
Here in the UK we keep getting bombarded with alternative methods of house heating, air source heat pumps for one. Could your Government provide opportunities with discounts and loans to enable the properties to be occupied?
Thank you for another update, I do very much hope that the power plant is safe , just a thought.. from my experience from visiting a volcano in Japan where the would drill into it to let the pressure out or it would erupt it did work for that volcano it stopped it from erupting... but would drilling help in this case to any degree ?
Enjoy your good weather.
Will for sure :) thanks
Having looked hard at historical and current data I feel that this will continue beyond our lifetimes, sure it will move around but it is mostly due to the tectonic movement. This is going to carry on compensating for the crustal stretching that has taken place over the last centuries. There is much to be compensated for and Iceland will certainly grow in size but several generations will pass before this cycle is done.
I don' understand why they don't establish a quarry in the lava flow to create a channel for the lava to follow and use the quarried rock to buildup the berm.
I know Iceland wants to tread lightly on the environment, but they need to get more heavy equipment into the area. Likely several countries would be willing to help. They could select one of the hills to remove materials from and really build up the barriers around the power plant. Probably need to create a channel to help divert flows away so the lava doesn't pile up then go over the barriers as much. Likely would need multiple barriers so the flow would need to overtop each one. It may be all for not, but if they are going to want to save the power plant, they need to do more. But again, the amount of money and resources needed to increase defenses could instead be used for a new facility in a safer location. They just need to move on one way or the other with much more urgency. The eruptions aren't going to wait for a convenient time.
Congratulations with 100 k subscribers 🎉🥳 Like 25% of Iceland's population
