Arc'teryx Presents: The Pass

- In Rogers Pass, the Trans-Canada Highway and Canadian Pacific Railway wind underneath 134 avalanche paths that release 2,000 avalanche events each winter, controlled by military artillery, helicopters, and remote control systems. It was off-limits to ski touring for decades. Then a surprising player stepped up to help mastermind the Pass’s modern winter permit system that’s designed to keep skiers safe from Howitzers and controlled avalanches.
In this 12-minute film, we meet Sylvia Forest (63), a woman who rose to leadership in the rugged worlds of mountain rescue, guiding, and avalanche safety before equal representation was a blip on the radar, and one of the architects of the permit system in 1995. In turn, she mentored Danyelle Magnan, who recently became-after her own formidable experience in remote backcountry rescue and ski guiding-the first woman on the elite Rogers Pass avalanche forecasting team that’s responsible for thousands of lives on a daily basis. The duo reunite in the Pass for their first ski tour together after ten years, to reflect on their journeys in the face of high-risk elements, immense pressure, and long-established cultural norms. In quietly and impressively showing what’s possible, these two women represent a small but pivotal part of the seismic shift happening to the face of mountain culture.

Thank you for something other than just another ski movie.
Cool. As an avid user of the pass, in the ski season, im stoked for this to become more recognized / respected by the ski community, since they have a lack of understanding, to varying degrees, as to the importance of the corridor, as well as the relative unimportance of their pastime. Ripping those peaks has been a cornerstone to my existence, which pales in comparison to the reality of why the pass is there. Good flik
Beautiful film. Incredibly inspirational story of these two pioneering women and their work.
So many memories! I've been snowboarding in that area many years ago and I remember the permit-system to avoid being in the shooting lane. There is a hut somewhere close to Rogers Pass, we used to hitchhike to Revelstoke to buy groceries. Young and without money but lots of powder and fun. And coming all the way from Europe those were some memorable weeks.
Beautifully captured film. Thanks so much for highlighting the amazing work these folks do everyday ❤️
Namaste Joe
Good work snow lady
Fabulous. Visited the region from the UK at July in the summer. Beautiful seeing it from this snowy perspective. I was very impressed with parcs Canada and their mission, throughout my visit. A massive asset to the nation.
So happy to see this and Danyelle shining in her element! I’m so proud to consider her a friend too! What an amazing film! For the Dream!!!
Thanks for the film. And thank you for the avalanche control team.
I love that area in the winter time. It really is magical. Thank you to all who make it possible to access.
incredible story, cinematography, editing, sound.
Just an incredibly well produced documentation. Well done to everyone involved!
Thanks for the great work, for keeping us safe and keeping the playground open!
Whoop whoop. Way to go Danyelle, congrats on achieving your dream. 🤩 Shout-out from Germany and regards from Gret and Brigitte.
Insane production quality‼️
beautiful film!
The cinematography here is beyond exceptional.... Well done.
I love the ski vids, but wish Arc would also make ice climbing vids!
They have, ever heard of will gadd?
@@samcheplick226 Ive seen lots of his vids, and I'm saying I want more. Guess I didn't state my first statement accurately, haha. I get it though, bigger ski audience than ice climbing.
Check out Desert Ice, it’s awesome!
Outstanding! Arc'teryx
Beatifully shot but also super interesting. Thanks for making this.
I visited Glacier National Park and the other BC Interior parks this last summer. Absolutely stunning, thank you for keeping them accessible to the public!
OMG what a documentary, that was brilliant and beautiful
Super inspiring! Hope to visit Canada soon 😍
absolutely love this
So insightful, well done!
Beautiful video! Thanks for bringing these stories to us!
Brilliant!
Gorgeous area! Hard to keep eyes on the road when going through the pass. I really like these short films. Keep the coming.
Beautiful film!
Beautifully shot and nice film emulation grade
Inspiring! Such dedication.
Great capture of this epic challenge
So well done!
Amazing documentary
Rogers Pass is such a magical place ... big tks to the parks team and everybody involved to ensure access over the winter months. But the skiing really really sucks - like trust me - it sucks - stay home - please ... ;-)
Super awesome inspirational video and Pros doing a great job 👏
great insight!
Inspirational story! Roger’s Pass is so beautiful and this was a cool inside scoop
That was great!
I love knowledge, thank you
Loved this in film fest!
Def keep the skiing and snowboarding vids coming! Help me justify buying this gortex shell to use on my resorts
Two very inspiring women =)
This was great! Well done!
Well shot! I was just there, beautiful place.
Very interesting and cool film. I ski rogers nearly every weekend. Love Gnp.
I can only imagine some of the powder days you've enjoyed up there!!!
I love this video. Super interesting. I would love to know the week to week goings on of this area. Great people doing riveting and helpful jobs. I don't think I'll ever be skiing up there but maybe I can visit in the summer.
very cool vid
that was hella cool
Really nice ans interesting film
Stay fit sharpwit ,impressive vocation
I just rucked marched through some of these summit passes 😂never got used to sleeping near avalanche zones 😂 LIVED TO RUCK ANOTHER DAY 🦾
영상 예술이네..
Women heroes ❤
I reckon the queue of volunteers in the RCA to spend the winter at the pass is lengthy. ;)
Strap on the Nito.💥let it ripp
Stunning and fascinating, but some of us wouldn't consider accomodating traffic as "preserving national forest".
Animal farming, traffic, overconsumption still taking place is how we hurled ourselves into the demise and the most tragically, dragged sane species and lifeforms down with us.
the coolest part of the video was the artillery and it was barely a blip of the focus
First homie boooo ya
4:53 The Year is 1881.
What test is that at 8:20?
I'm not sure what it's called when executed on a permanent platform, but it looks equivalent to a shovel tilt test: ua-cam.com/video/dA9TNVl87gM/v-deo.html
Next door in Canmore ..tho revie gets way pow
Why not make this section all underground ?
Tunnel?
Yap, maybe it is about the time
Great film. But Arcteryx warrant blows. $500 shell jacket delaminated and I was basically told to pound salt. Yes I’m still salty. But I saved a bazillion dollars not using them anymore
Not to detract from the wonderful cinematography and video here.
This is ironic since Arc'terx doesn't consider Canadian Armed Forces members outdoor professionals. If they don't support the Canadian Army, they shouldn't have them in one of their promotional videos. It's wrong that they portray members in this light, then tell them that they are not professionals, especially having them in the thumbnail as clickbait. Arc'teryx doesn't support the Canadian Armed Forces, you shouldn't support Arc'teryx
Although very many years ago. Our unit fired our 105’s there for avalanche control. I can’t think of any other time that a civilian would be in command of our artillery piece. But it worked.

The military is a cringe subjugation force per design. Fuck the troops
Arcterx is owned by Chinese government. They are against Canadian army.
The armed forces are the ULITMATE Outdoorsman
Arc Teryx has the worst warranty in the industry. I spent the extra money on my soft shell and when the seems started splitting, they didn't do anything about it. Patagonia would have fixed it no questions asked. Don't waste your money on Arc Teryx.
We don’t wear no Patagonia …
@@aecet9652 I don't buy from them anymore either but they do have a WAY better warranty than Arc teryx. I've gone mainly to Marmot, Kuiu and First Light.
You work for the Italians, me not.
In Europe they would have tunnelled under the pass and the transportation corridor would be safe from avalanches. Canada is so backward.
JFC the egos chill out.
Pass to China? Arcteryx is owned by China😂
