- Today we take on a full 20ft flagpole installation. Starting with digging out a hole that is 12 inches wide by 24 inches deep. Using some sonotube, we layer in gravel and 3 bags of sacrete to help make sure that our flags will fly high in any weather.

No tap, pea gravel a couple inches in the pipe as well the sides. Tape the TOP if only you're sloppy or in a rush. And pour concrete on the sides with the pipe already in place.

Level the top. It's not necessary to put the level on the side of the pipe.
Agree with this. But…just be darn certain the top of the sleeve is exactly 90 degrees to the sleeve itself.
Question: I have an existing flagpole about 20 to 25 feet high and it has no existing rope on the pole.
There is an "Eye-Bolt" at the top of the pole for a rope to pass through - however - the pole is to thin,
to small in diameter to lean a ladder against it in order to climb the pole to lace a rope through the
existing eyebolt.
Any thoughts on how I might get a rope through the eyebolt at the top of the pole?
Small lead fishing weight, strong weight fishing line, extendable pole with a hook. Position pole over right spot, loosen line so the weight drops in. Drop down, stitch end through rope, tape so it’s smooth, pull over and out. You’ll have the forearms of Popeye but it will work with enough tries.
If the flag pole is in a flat area and accessible, you can always rent a lift from the local home store. The fee is usually $200 for 4 hours.

What was the purpose of using the sonotube instead of going directly into the ground. I’ve only ever used them if I needed to form concrete above grade. Just curious.
The tube is a waste of money, just put concrete into the dirt, it works great. just like installing fenceposts.

Sonotube is used when you need to form above grade. Like posts for a wood deck; you don’t want them contacting the ground and rotting prematurely, so sonotube gives a nice and easy form that you will see for decades. In this case, the sonotube was just extra work and money since he covered it all up. You’re not supposed to leave the tubes in the ground either…
And the gravel was a waist

You taped the tube at the bottom... why put pea gravel then. The gravel is for the water to drain from water in the tube that will happen
I'll have to remember that for my next install. Was following someones advice at the time and didn't think anything of it.
