I'm just curious. Are there any federal or state customs, rules, regulations or even laws in the US how you make a flag pole and how you attach the flag to the rope? Here (all Scandinavia), there are no strict laws but rather customs that the pole _should be_ white (unless it's a small one made of wood) and the flag _should always_ be attached to the rope with flag sticks top and bottom. Personally I would never have used what you call D-rings: metal + metal + wind = clunk clunk.
@@SteifWood The US has a fairly detailed flag code. 4 U.S.C. ch. 5 § 5 is the law. However: 1. It is for the most part, advisory. Federal offices are likely bound to follow it, but ordinary citizens and business cannot be punished or arrested for disregarding. That said, generally if you care enough to fly one, you generally care enough to follow the rules. 2. While there are portions dealing with display, such as the requirement that the flag not be flown at night, unless illuminated, I don't believe it there are any rules about pole color or attachment methods. Indeed, I believe even US government flow flags vary in attachment. Some are sleeved for indoor poles and many are attached with hooks through grommets. Do you have a photo or link to the flag sticks? Are these just pegs that hold the rope to the flag? Yes, flag hardware does often clank in high winds, but to me, its just part of the music of life.
You could spray the exposed pipe threads with cold galvanizing spray paint. It would keep them from rusting as the galvanization is lost when the threads are cut.
Just this past Monday I put up a flagpole. Already had a galvanized 1.5 " pipe. Ordered a repair kit from Amazon and a solar light to illuminate the flag...the light fits under the top ball on the pole and it doesn't matter which way the flag is flying its always illuminated at night🇺🇲👌👍
Thanks for putting out this video! It is the best homemade do-it-yourself flagpole video on UA-cam, in my opinion. Going to Home Depot to purchase everything that I need and get started. Thanks again
Its one of the best diy videos ive watched where you actually show step by step clearly. Hats off to you bro for being a hardworker and clearly your kids love you alot. All the best.
Nice job! LPT. Get a flagpole truck with finial, that allows the flag to rotate at top of pole and tie your halyard together between your snap hooks keeping a neater look and easier hitching at the cleat, especially when flying flag at half staff.
This was a great video. I got really excited because I need to replace my flag pole. My how times have changed. I just priced everything needed at Home Depot and the total is now $285!

Just the video I was looking for to build a good solid flagpole that will withstand the strong beach coastal winds of North Myrtle Beach, SC. I had been thinking 2"inch galvanized. Thanks for a great video, extremely well planned, organized, and explained. Thanks from an old Army paratrooper, Vietnam Vet. I'm headed to Lowes to get my material. USA. The only addition will be a POW*MIA flag in remembrance of our over 1500 MIAs from the Vietnam War. Thanks for an excellent video, and most importantly, being an American Patriot and probably a vet.
Thank you for sharing this. After watching it, my brother and I built one at his house following your steps. Came out awesome! Unfortunately, inflation and higher prices in California this cost around $375 for the same parts off your description list
I love this. Your detail is absolutely essential. It will weather well! What a GORGEOUS pole! The non-endowment cemetery I am restoring needs a line of flag poles for Memorial Day and Veterans Day and this would be my preference on how to make it. Now to do the asking oermission part. : )
3 day jog for me. 1 trying to get down into rock/clay excuse for soil. My aluminum telescoping pole been up 15+ years but is developing issues, may have to go this route soon.
Wow, wow, what an outstanding job you did . Love the kitty and puppy playing, and what a wonderful kids and your son helping dad always love that. God bless you and your family, and thank you for sharing your ideas that I have to copy you because that is the best flagpole ever.
I used to live on my sailboat, talk about clanging! There were about Fifty sailors boats in that marina and most of the owners didn’t know how to set up the masts and halyards for less noise. I got used to it. Fun times back then.
My father in law built one exactly the same way, but he put all one piece in and that was 30 years ago and replaced the pulley once with a rubber wheeled one.
At 3:29…you know you’re doing this Dad thing right! All the kids, engaged and enjoying the project. Few more years, you’ll be able to drag out a lawn chair and watch them work the entire time!
One Recommendation-- put some anti-seize on the bottom threads --- if you have to service the top in five years -- it will be way easier to take down.. Great video , i will attempt !!
Looks great. We live in Oklahoma and have been having 40mph winds damn near every day and also get lots of storms and tornadoes so I want to build something quite strong.
Awesome video! I wanted a flag pole, but retail flag poles that looked decent were well over $1000.00 and much more than that in many cases. Thanks for taking the time to makes this! BTW, as an added cool feature, we get to see your cat's impressive athleticism at about 2:05 :) Take care and Semper Fi sir.
Tyler, good job on the flagpole. It is interesting that Americans that fly the flag are patriots but when English houses do it is branded as jingoism. Ethan is growing so fast it won't be long before you can't use him to clean the chimneys!
UPDATE (June 2024): We installed ours October 2023, with a little modifications to it. We did a 10 ft pole as the initial (5 feet in the ground and 5 feet above) as we wanted our finished height to be 25 ft. I will say that we have experienced an EF3 tornado in Dec'23 and multiple straight line winds of 60+mph and this setup hasn't been compromised at all!!! Highly recommend this DIY project if you have been wanting to show you patriotism! I will say that having the 5 ft above ground did present a high level of difficulty when you go to install the two remaining piles (10 ft each). Hey Tyler! I watched the video you did at your old house and now this one, great job! Where do you buy your galvanized pipes?
Seriously considering doing this as a steel flagpole at the local flag store is $700. Thanks for sharing. I however would want to buy a stationary truck (I think that's what they are called, It's the pully at the top) with a ball topper on it. That way I can get one of those solar lights that you can put at the top.
Would like to hear an engineer's input on using Galvanized steel over Aluminum. Steel is more brittle, and aluminum has more flex which is better for something thatll sway from high speed winds. Even steel will sway... Steel is always stronger than aluminum, and its why its used for framing on a building however thats not the same kind of steel.
Tyler, thanks for a great video. You look like you have such a great family, such a great bunch of kids....and it was so funny when you said the part about "working smarter, not harder" -- it was hilarious. Thanks for loving America, God bless you. Subscribed.
Great video, Tyler! I plan on building the same, except to add a 6' yard arm one third from the top. I'm thinking of using 1 1/2" on bottom, transitioning to 1" midway and 1/2" above yard arm. Do you think you could have used smaller pipe on yours? Do you think my plan would be too flexible with effectively 3 flags hanging? Thanks
Hey there, nice job, loved watching how your kids helped you. Curious why did you reduce the size of the pole on top? Wouldn't it be stringer just keeping it 2 inch all the way?
I am working on a 30 ft pole (5ft will be in the ground), but the ridged conduit is not straight at the joints. Did you ever have to deal with that problem, and if so, what did you do. Since my project is so big, I am going to weld the joints...but I got to get them straight first.
Awesome! Tall, heavy duty flagpoles are so expensive. Thanks for showing me how to build my own without breaking the bank. I subbed because your helpers are too stinking adorable! You cracked me up when you told your son to work faster if he wanted to eat later. 😂😂😂
Wanted to thank you for the video. I watched it last week, and again today to double check materials list and depth. We just completed our barndominium, and though it looks awesome, something was missing. Gonna be a Texas flag flying over it by next weekend !!! Awesome help, thank you.
use a bolt/nuts extended through the pole (about inch or two) from bottom of the cap/threads not the cap to sturdy the pulley then you could later add a finial by tapping the cap
After my second flag pole was removed by weather, I was considering doing a pole like this. However, since the other two tended to wrap around the pole, I am trying to figure a way to have a rotating truck on top with a pulley in the center, and the rope, (or cable) going up through the pipe.
Nice flag pole , i bought one of the 2 inch aluminum flag pole , but it only took one wind storm in Michigan and down she came . Glad to find your video so i can build one that will last, also was glad to see your helpers helping you, lol great video.
I just bought a pole and this is a first time for me, do you have a video on how to attach the carabiner to the flag? My instruction pamphlet doesn't show how to.

This is the third flag pole I have made this way, the first two have taken a beating and still look great! Thanks for watching!!😁🚩🚩

Well done young man! It's heart warming to see how much the flag means to you and you family.
Yes!
With raising the flag we remember the struggle of many to remain free. Excellent. God bless America.
A little Iwo Jima moment as you and The Wife raise the pole into position.
That was the second pole she raised on that day.

Such a great thing to do with the kids, gives them more than one reason to be proud every time they look at the flag flying
I love it! Going to do this. Only thing I want to possibly add is a light on top for flying all night.
Thank you so much for this guide. I just bought my first house with my wife and now new born daughter and this is a MUST have for any house I own.

Outstanding job, Tyler!! I am looking to raise a Ham amateur antenna and your idea is SUPERB!!
Only thing I’d change would be to leave maybe 2 feet of pole extension above flag.
I hate where I live, I can find any threaded galvanized pipe anywhere! My other sectional poles just are weak and over time end up listing a bit.
Great build. Does the flag get wrapped around the pole at all? That is my main concern with a DIY flag pole.

Another quick tip would be to use a PVC or simlar sleeve that is wider in diameter than the base of your pole. Install the PVC in the concrete footing, then install your flagpole inside the PVC and fill the PVC with sand to secure the pole in place. This gives you a little leeway to make small adjustments to the plumb line. It also allows you to take the pole down for maintenance or replacement in the future. This looks great for the price and will work fine for most residential applications. If you want an economic residential pole with the professional "commercial" pole look, we care a Special Sectional Series flagpole for around $500 that is packaged to ship with UPS/Fedex instead of a freight truck.
That's what I did. A 2 1/2 inch schedule 40 PVC pipe is just a hair bigger than the 2 inch galvanized pipe. It fits inside perfectly. No sand needed.
their is actually a meaning when the flagpole ring like a bell it signifies that a veteran has passed through the gates with honor.
Nice job and came out great. Only downside is price fluctuation. Not sure if it's my area or pipe in general seems expensive anymore. A 10ft 1.5" galv sched 40 is $55, 2" 10ft lengths are $63/ea. Even with menards mir, the total after rebates for the poles plus misc is up to $190-200 not including concrete. Compared to 25ft prefab aluminum kits which run around $180.
I'm sure galvanized is stronger/sturdier though the aluminum ones are rated to 100mph winds supposedly. The added cost of having to buy another pole or repairing the pole makes theis pole definitely worth it.
Nice to see a young man who is patriotic. Nice job!
Awesome! I hope you installed nighttime illumination
This looks great, I had a telescoping pole fail and am looking for a replacent. How tall do you think this design could work?
"hold your breath" lol, I do the same thing when dealing with 1 or so bags where I won't be in it a long time.
