I so love this movie, there is barely any second wasted, it has amazing re-watch potential, and it is full of comedy and action, references to other movies subtly (and not so subtly) and the cast is incredible! It is my favourite part of the Cornetto trilogy. And even though the _product placement_ is easy to miss, there is cornetto in each of the movies and its colour does not seem to be random.

What a classic. Being from the UK, the police here have never been seen as action-oriented or badass like US movie-cops, they're just not "cool" (they're not routinely armed either). Edgar Wright thought it was time they got their own action movie, so throwing together that juxtaposition of quaint, sheltered country-cops and the ludicrously over the top action references to big cinema was a really unique idea! It's a little tongue-in-cheek and a very quotable movie, particularly amongst employees in the police who look at it fondly in a sort of ironic, self-referential way.

The hooded masked gloved killer conspiracy thing is a trope from Italian horror / crime stories, usually called "Giallo" . Its like "noir" crime stories, only more lurid. So part of this movie is a Giallo homage, the other is a Michael Bay /Point Break (Katherine Bigelow) homage.

The movie basically parodies two kinds of cop movie - the English smalltown whodunnit mysteries (with small towns that, when you stop to think about it has to have a murder rate higher than Detroit) and American cop dramas/action movies. Pointing out that they're both kind of silly but we love them anyway.
Edit: I love that a) the heroes don't actually kill anyone, and b) the main villains are the freaking Home Owner's Association (well, the local equivalent of it).

    • @rolandcooke

Just to expand on your (b) a little
Firstly the initials of the "HOA" are NWA...not a coincidence. :D
Secondly, while Sergeant Angel's theory about why the murders are happening is totally plausible and fits all the evidence...the victims are being killed for all sorts of petty reasons....which of course is absolutely reminiscent of HOA politics. :D
(There's a lot more of course, the actors involved, the surnames of their characters, etc. Brilliant scriptwriting. :D )

Father Christmas is played by the director Peter Jackson, Janene is Cate Blanchett, the Judges were played by Simon Pegg's Mum and Edgar Wright's Mum and high school English teacher. its already been said bout Michael being played by the same guy who was the Hound in GoT but also the town they filmed in is Edgar Wrights home town he actually stayed at his Folks home whilst filming.

The Spiky ball is an old Sea mine. Mines like those were used in WW2 and so when something hit those sensitive sticks it would start the detonation process. Its quite a funny joke in the way that you expect it to explode but those sea mines are so old that they may not even work anymore so yea.

Someone else has probably said it already, but Skinner was played by Timothy Dalton, who also played James Bond for just two Bond films, in 1987 and 1989. He was James Bond in between Roger Moore and Pierce Brosnan.

Hot Fuzz is my favourite comedy. As for the best bit, too many to choose from, but I remember watching it when it came out here in the UK and the scene when Messenger was splattered by the roof got the loudest, longest laugh I've ever heard from an audience. The whole room was howling like lunatics.

Funny that Olivia Coleman, Academy Award winning actress is in this film as a filthy mind cop. Also, Oscar winner Cate Blanchett made a cameo as Angel’s ex-girlfriend covered up and wearing a mask, goggles, and a protective suit for crime scene investigation in the beginning. I believe it’s called the Cornetto Trilogy because they’re different flavors with the same core characters, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

Second time I watched it, I enjoyed its incredible subtext and little details I didn't notice before. It is one of my favorite Edgar Wright movies with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost.

    _"What's in there?!"_
It's an old Sea Mine - they are dropped into the ocean and float just under the surface of the water until a ship hits it. Then those pins depress and a HUGE explosion happens.
It's a giant grenade that floats, basically. Would turn a human into something closely resembling a tomato smoothie.

    Brilliant movie, of course.
The head of the town is Edward Woodward, who played a similar role to Simon Pegg's character in the classic horror "The Wicker Man"
In that film, Edward Woodward's extremely Christian police officer tries to find a missing girl on a remote Scottish island all on his own - that has adopted some very extreme pagan rituals (like burning him alive inside a massive Wicker Man at the end!)
Just like in this movie, the main village shown in The Wicker Man doesn't appear to have anything wrong with it. But we learn that nothing is as it seems, and the whole town is in on it.
I also appreciate Timothy Dalton ("Mr Skinner") - he was Daniel Craig's James Bond 20 years too early. He deserved more than 2 movies.

Similar comedy-action-horror movies I recommend are 'Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang', and 'Two Hands' with Heath Ledger. So dark, so funny, so good. For Hot Fuzz I like your take on parallel universes, because the Cornetto trilogy really are unrelated, yet very related. Some people don't like 'World's End' as much as the first two; I think because it has some real heavy sadness to it. I love it to bits though, its every bit as well scripted, acted and edited as Sean of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

I just couldn't help grinning when you refered to all of the people as "Aawwww, they're all so sweet."
This would come as such an awkward awakening. 😁😁
Oh, and rewatch the scenes whenever Timothy Dalton/ Skinner appears in his car. He always plays a song according to the motive / motif of the murder that has just been committed. Either the whole song, or at least the textline from the lyrics.
In the first murder, it was the line "a love-strucken Romeo" from the Dire Straights, in the second it was the iconic "Fire!" from the song "Fire" by 'The Crazy World of Arthur Brown'.
There are more such masterful details in almost every scene of this movie. There must have been decades worth of brain storms of ideas they HAVEN'T used.
The 'Hag' from the hotel was using a German Schmeisser machine pistol, or MP-40, created by the Nazis... or rather, fascists. 😁😁
The doctor with the shotgun was also the proprietor of the shooting stand at the county fair, and was shot by Danny in the same foot that was later hit when Danny threw the shotgun away.

Hi, dear. I just discovered your UA-cam page. I’m impressed with your reactions and ability to foresee elements in the story and where they’re going to go before they play out. On this film, Hot Fuzz (and someone else may already have pointed this out): this film does in fact qualify as part of a trilogy along with the other two films Shaun of the Dead and The World’s End. The literary and technical definition of a trilogy does not mean continuing characters and storyline.
As opposed to the Lord of the rings or Star Wars, which J.R.R. Tolkien made it clear that LOTR isn’t a trilogy. The thematic connection Hot Fuzz shares with the other two films are Blood and Cornetto ice cream. Which is only made clear in the last film in the very last few minutes. That said, your UA-cam channel is extremely enjoyable!
