  • Here is the review to a 2015 International Durastar. This truck features a 220hp/520 ft-lbs Cummins 6.7L ISB. Which is completely emissions compliant in all 50 states. It has air drum brakes and an air ride cab as well as a bench seat. 50 gallon diesel fuel tank and a 15 gallon DEF tank. More of a basic spec fleet truck, but still a nice truck overall as with most Penske trucks. Please feel free to ask questions that I didn't answer in the video! At the end of the video is easy access to the 3 other previous trucks reviewed, which include a Freightliner and older Internationals! Want to help support more awesome reviews like this? In August of this year I rented a 22’ (International) to move from Palm Beach County to Buffalo. It was a 2018, so Durastar 4300? It had the Eaton 7 speed dual clutch and 116k miles. I had a 1br apartment of stuff in back plus was towing my 2017 Focus EV. It had decent power I guess? I’ve never driven any other box truck, but it couldn’t hold 65MPH up most of the hills in WV. It could only maintain 45-55. I got 9.3MPG overall. I guess speed kills MPG more than hills? The first day was flat but 70MPH, and the second day was probably 60-65 with hills. I got ~9.0MPG on the first day but 10.8MPG on the second day.
    I specifically asked for the 22 even though it was the same price as the 26 because I wanted the extra maneuverability. I didn’t need the extra space, I mainly just wanted the diesel for the long drive and hills. I would have gone even smaller but of course nobody has a small truck with a diesel engine any more, at least not for one way.

    I may rent one of these for a move across country. Is there anything I should know about fueling up other than the obvious fact that it takes diesel? Will I need to fill up the DEF tank for a 3,600 mile trip? Can I stop at regular gas stations for fuel or will I need to use those fuel stations meant for big semi trucks? I will be towing a car as well so I'm concerned about pulling in at regular gas stations.

    Great review, thanks! Found your channel doing research for an upcoming (next week) 1900 mile cross-country self-move using a 26' Penske truck. I was wondering if you know what truck (year/make/model) you're going to get beforehand or if you just reserve the size you want and you get what you get when you pick-up?

      +JKMC I don't know what I am getting usually. But you can always ask as they will know what will be there for you. Usually if you ordered a lift it will be a Freightliner, a ramp truck will probably be a International. They have a computer system were when you order, they see all the different trucks in the area and they just pick one that's close. I always call when I order, you can haggle them down a bunch more.But they will be able to tell you if your interested, and you could probably request a certain truck. Thanks for watching and coming to my channel! That's quite the move you have there, and will be tiring for sure! Feel free to ask away!

      Ok man, picked up my truck today. I'm a complete noob when it comes to this stuff so sorry if I sound like it lol! From what i can tell i got a pretty sweet truck. It's a 2017 International with a Cummins, 26', 7,000 miles on it. Beyond that I don't know what to look for. I know the driver seat is an air ride. I might be able to do a live video or something tomorrow if you're interested. If you are, let me know what to look for or what you might like to see. Again, I'm not a truck driver so dumb it down for me! Let me know

    Looks like a nice truck. Real simple and has probably the strongest engine/transmission combo out there these days. Could they be ordered with a manual transmission? I could see an air shift 10 speed going into one of those.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  7 років тому

      Yes, they are a really simple truck! They can have either a 5, 6, or 10 speed Eaton Fuller manual transmission, an Eaton Automated-Manual, Eaton Procision Dual Clutch, or a 1000, 2000, or 3000 series Allison Auto. This one has the 2000 series Allison Auto. Engine options are the Cummins B6.7, Cummins L9, or a Navistar N9. So there are quite a bit of combinations one can have.

    • @MichaelTJD60
      @MichaelTJD60 7 років тому

      Wow, that's quite a range of options. International has used Cummins in trucks for a long time so I'm not surprised that they're still offering Cummins in their trucks today.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  7 років тому +1

      Yeah they phased out there own in house MaxxForce/Navistar just a few years back in favor of the EPA compliant Cummins. A big portion of International was recently bought out by Volkswagen who owns MAN trucks. A lot of there engines are coming over from across the pond and showing up in the newer International trucks. Thanks for watching!

    Excellent overview and regarding the 2011 international truck you rented from Penske it had an Eaton Ultrashift automated manual transmission and I'm not sure if you encounter low speed lurching in this Penske International durastar with an Allison transmission

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  7 років тому +1

      +EpicThe112 I haven't had any driving issues with the Allisons. The biggest issues with the Eaton was the very poor acceleration, roll back on hills and upon braking the transmission would downshift and have enough torque to keep pulling the truck forward even while you are braking. Like if you were pulling up to a stop sign, you would end up way past it because the transmission would not let go even though you were braking. Combine that with hydraulic brakes and it's a bit sketchy. The Allisons feels essentially like a car transmission! Thanks for watching!

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  7 років тому +1

      +crazyjdkid I have gotten 3 trucks from them. The 2011 was the only one with the Eaton, while the 2014 and 2015 had 2000 series Allisons.

    • @jaysmith1408
      @jaysmith1408 5 років тому +1

      Personally i’d say they all lurch. The old automated manuals were the worst, but these new allisons are just wonky. The powertrain of a Ram 4500 is now attempting to move a 13 ton truck. Most have the problem of arguing (with itself) about which gear to select and use. Either ping-ponging back and forth, or refusing to shift one way or the other.

    • @EpicThe112

      @@jaysmith1408 Thanks for telling me and I'm wondering if this is the same transmission used on freightliner M2. The ones with the liftgate. By the way, I've seen you comment on U-Haul trucks. You seem to work for Penske and for used trucks They seem to be your 2017 to 2019 models

    • @jaysmith1408
      @jaysmith1408 4 роки тому +1

      EpicThe112 EpicThe112 correct, the specs vary slightly, but with the retirement of the MaxxForce Internationals, both the International DuraStar/MV’s and the M2’s are effectively identical as far as powertrain is concerned. 200HP ISB with an Allison. Some variations exist, such as M2’s with the DD5, a couple M2’s with eaton 6 speeds (rare), some with push button transmissions, and the Hino’s (with Hino motors and Allison 2200’s). As I type, I believe the new MV’s have eaton procision 7 speed automatics (very good transmission). I also believe the company tries to keep the fleet newer than 3 years, though some trucks slip through. I have no vested interest in the company besides my measly paycheque, and have no say in vehicle spec. All my information is gathered either by experience, or around the water cooler. As you mention U-Haul, I have nothing against them as a competitor, but I truly believe their equipment is utter rubbish, which is what brought me elsewhere, I refuse to drive U-Haul vehicles, mostly due to my detest of hydraulic braking, and love of larger, more durable diesels, designed for the weight. Also afterthought, Penske has a few new-ish Ford F650 26’ box trucks, V10 Triton, hydraulic brakes, and spring suspension (not one of our drivers likes them, though the seats are comfortable). The only difference between these and U-Haul’s is that Penske keeps the factory mirrors on all the trucks.

      I agree for the most part! I like the beige color of the International a lot better than the gray in the Freightliner, and the air vents are placed better too. But I like the gauge cluster and steering wheel on the Freightliner better, and most of the controls like the air brake are closer to you on the Freightliner as well! I would like to try a Durastar with a wrap around dash as well, I think that would solve some issues I have with the cab. Its mainly personal preference. Thanks for watching!

      crazyjdkid i’ve been barking up this tree for years. As long as they are spec’ing three person cabs (driver air seat + 2 person fixed bench) there’s no room for the bent console. As i write, i can think of a couple lease trucks that have double seats, and yet still have flat consoles. I’ve gotten fairly tired of trying to comprehend this company’s decisions.

      football11248 That's an option! They don't put it there because it tempts people to full it with diesel or fill the diesel tank with DEF. The later will cause about 13k in damage to the engine! Thanks for watching!

    • @jaysmith1408
      @jaysmith1408 7 років тому

      football11248 that's everybody's idea. The configurations on these trucks are incredible. They are different truck to truck, i doubt any two are spec'd the same. Freightliner has been good about theirs, only swapping transmissions from a six speed to a seven speed. All of those have air brakes, air ride seat, air horns, liftgates and the ISB (except one which is a Detroit DD5 Demo unit, which i absolutely love to drive, having been the first company driver to do so). Any hoo, International has their DEF tanks on the wrong side, which is a royal pain when you have to back into the fuel island to reach the DEF hose. The Hino's are easy, since both the Diesel and DEF tanks are on the wrong side, you just back into the fuel island and fuel as normal (just backwards), but then again, they're also all different. Let's just say i'm not fond of the guy who orders the trucks.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  7 років тому

      Literally every single International I have gotten from Penske has been slightly different. Its kind of neat in a way, as you can see the improvements they have made over time. I have yet to get a Freightliner from Penske, only through Ryder. Penske doesn't like to easily let go of those lift trucks to a household customer Although the next go around will probably be a Freightliner or a Hino through Penske, possibly a Ford (Diesel) through Budget. Man you need to hook me up on how to try that DD5, that would be awesome! Penske doesn't require household customers to refill the DEF like Ryder does, which is nice. Trust me having all that extra steps in filling the tanks is way better then filling them up wrong. A guy at my work did that to a Freightliner, big mistake!

      crazyjdkid as i've most likely mentoned in another comment section, the closer you get to the guys at the rental centre, the more cool stuff you get to try out and review. I've had the luxury of driving damn near every truck that comes through our centre, Freighliners, Hinos, Internationals, Fords, GMs, Volvos, Petes, Kenworths, Macks, Cummins, Detroit, all that fun stuff. The guys at our office are pretty good about requests, more so during slow periods, and will go miles (quite literally, hense why they pay me) to get trucks that customers request. I don't know the outcome of the DD5 test, so i'm sure there aren't many around. Otherwise it doesn't hurt to ask. A Freightliner M2 with a liftgate? No problem (they all have them). A Durastar with a MaxxNoise with a liftgate? A bit harder, but doable. Helps to get to know people closely. If there is any way i can be of assistance, feel free to contact me.

      They are starting to recognize me I think,I do have an account in there system and I go through a corporate owned facility. As I was leaving I asked if next time I could be more specific on a truck I was looking for and they said sure. As well as tell me the Hinos are harder to come by as the commercial customers keep them for a while. I tried to get a lift truck but they were booked all up by commercial customers, and there weren't any others close by. When I make these videos I have to do them on a budget, so keeping the cost down is important lol! .50/mile and 50/day isn't bad. You must be a vehicle hiker! What I really nee to do is get ahold of the manufacturers and get press vehicles or get Penske to give me some to demonstrate in return for the publicity!

    Thanks buddy. I just bought a 2012, 26' , insulated reefer, with 180,000 miles back in November. Unfortunately, it has the Max Force DT, 230 HP motor. I knew this going in and wanted a Freightliner M2 with the Cummins ISB but Good Lord, they were all 10 to 20 grand more with another 100,000 plus miles on them. I actually like the looks of the International better than the M2 and most things about the cab. Mine has air ride/bag suspension and driver seat but not the cab itself. I've put about 1000 miles on her and she started bleeding (leaking oil) from the right side Tuesday...I noticed in Lowe's parking lot. I sure hope it's nothing more than the O-ring to the turbo and easy to fix. Any tips, tricks, suggestions, referrals, etc. about the truck in general is appreciated. P.S. How do you change the idle shutdown time and can I change the rental truck tune...if you know, thanks again.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  6 років тому +1

      I have driven both and prefer the M2 as well, but the Durastar is a great truck as well.Bu yeah the M2's cab is a sea of gray! If you notice at 13:35, I idle up the truck with the cruise control. Yours should be able to do this, and this should prevent the truck from shutting down. I had a MaxxForce DT truck that would shutdown after 5 minutes of idling, it was so annoying when you were trying to cool down the cab! I want to say the idle shutdown controller might be a separate module so you might be able to unplug it? The dealer can always change the time til shutdown as well. As far as the rental tune, sometimes this is adjustable and sometimes it isn't depends on the build of the engine. Top speed can be changed by the dealer, most Penske trucks are limited 70mph on cruise and top out at 73ish. Since your truck has the DPF/EGR only system I recommend running it hard to keep those exhaust gas temperatures up so it stays cleaned out. Also the transmission likes to learn there driver, if you unhook the batteries for a few minutes it will reset the transmission controller and will be forced to relearn. It should adjust its behavior to suit you, especially if the driver before you was easy on the throttle. Thanks and happy to answer any other questions!

    • @Stucknarutt
      @Stucknarutt 6 років тому

      Thanks much man. Sounds like you know them pretty well as in my limited 1000 miles with it, you're right in line about being governed (pretty sure @ 70MPH)...I hit 74, downhill, on the way home with it that first day and it's hard to even make it to 65 on I-95 flat now. Must say I wouldn't want to go over 70MPH on most of these trucks this size anyway...Too Sketchy !! Keep in mind, mine is an insulated reefer (Thermo King, T-800 R, Whisper unit above cab) and is tall and heavy. I've weighed it three times empty on three different scales, which were all actually very close. This is the reading from certified Cat scales, which was the only one that gave my weight per axel...8300 on the steer, 12,200 on the drive, with a gross of 20,500, which should allow for a legal load of only just under 3 tons which is more than I should need for my mobile shop purpose.

    • @Stucknarutt
      @Stucknarutt 6 років тому

      Continuing, I love this size truck, class 6, which is big and capable enough to do some great things with a skilled driver, yet just under having to have a CDL size...don't tell anybody we like it cause they'll try to take away ! Lol. More of my cons...On top of the POS MaxForce engine, I also was blessed with the equal in POSness, Eaton Fuller, 5 speed, auto tranny, which as you've stated, SUCKS !! Or stated about eaton tranny's in general which I couldn't agree more on. So yeah, I've got myself a less than desirable truck I've got to make work for me, for at least two years and hopefully I can update. I want an extended cab 4WD, loaded, Cummins/Allison for my next one, LOL...just dreaming. Meanwhile, in reality, I've got an oil leak to find and fix regardless. I saw a Bojangles in your video. +ThatRuinedMedia Fundamentally and build wise, yes. But they have small differences mainly to do with duty cycle. This truck is only rated to 220hp/560ftlbs vs a Ram with 385hp/900ftlbs. This is called derating. The engine is capable of a lot more power, but knowing that this truck will have a hard duty cycle constantly hauling and running day in and day out they derate it to make it more reliable and last longer. The Ram is not necessarily a commercial vehicle so it is not designed to run in such a harsh duty cycle, so it can be tuned to make much more power. All this is controlled through the computer. The turbos and after treatment systems are a bit different too.Thanks for watching!

    In your experiences renting these Penske trucks, have they ever charged you more for a truck with a lift gate vs just a ramp?

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  6 років тому

      Sorry I just saw this! Yes, they do charge you extra for the lift gate trucks and they are very hard to reserve. The reason being is that the liftgate trucks are in their Commercial fleet and not their residential fleet. So Residential gets last dibs on them, and they charge more to ensure they would make what a commercial account would because they have to pull them out of commercial service. The lift gate trucks are spec'ed much higher too and have much better creature comforts, many are CDL rated. Penske has been sued numerous times over injuries from people using lift gates that don't know how to use them. If you need one be sure to reserve it early. Another option is Ryder, all there trucks have both liftgates and ramps, but you can only do round trip. Let me know if you have other questions!

      Now I didn’t say this, but a 26 foot box truck is one flat rate. Well, the rate fluctuations wildly, but a 26 foot truck, is one rate. If, however, there is a shortage of liftgate equipped trucks, they may jack the price, but they’re in the same price bracket. Commercial and Personal usage prices vary too, but really, at the end of the day, it’s how much the counter guy either wants to gouge you, or how much he wants that truck off his lot and making any money at all.

    What is the price $ for a box truck like this??? Thank you..

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  6 років тому

      If your talking in terms of purchasing the truck, used this truck would probably run you 40-50k. New this truck would run you about 80-100k depending on options.

      @@crazyjdkid yes i am asking you because penske righ now is selling. Used box truck but as is ...there is one i am interested to buy is a 2012 International 4300
      But need to replace the engine...the truck cost 6K

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  6 років тому

      There is a lot of variable in deciding the value of the trucks. Those older Internationals with the MFDT have removable cylinder sleeves which makes rebuilding the engine very easy. But it can get expensive quick!

      This truck is not used commercially or over the road! It's a rental truck for moving stuff for your house or business! Like if you were moving from one house to another. I don't make any money driving it for myself! Thanks for watching all the way in Brazil!

      My nephew has dual citizenship, my sister has the Green card, I will retire here for 4 years and I intend to travel there in the US, I am a Police Officer K9 here in Brazil and I was a truck driver for 11 years.

      That's awesome! As long as you go through all the right process to live and work here you shouldn't have any issues quickly getting a truck job and traveling the US! Thanks for watching!

    Wow that's a surprisingly low hp and tq for such a big truck, but I guess it's enough. Meanwhile f350s have 400 hp and 1000tq lol

    • @crazyjdkid

      The engine in this truck can easily make the same power as that Ford. But the engine in this truck has been derated to increase longevity and reliability.

      randslites It's a nice truck for sure! I haven't had any bad experiences with Penske! If you have issues make sure they know and most of the time they will work to help you resolve them.
