For the "try it in the Rocky's" people. There is a guy that sold me on the Godzilla with 1 video and he was towing in the Rocky's. He towed a gooseneck with a full blown case backhoe on it. He weighed it on the scales for a total combined gross weight of 32,020. Grossly overloaded. The slowest he got down to was 53 mph up a 7 percent grade. I personally own a Godzilla powered tremor. I pulled 11700 from San Diego California to Reno NV. We had a combined gross weight of about 20k. I pulled cajon pass at 65 mph between 7th which is 1to1 and 8th which is overdrive between 2500 rpm and 3500 rpm. On the flats I hardly knew the trailer was there. Then I put it in the worst possible towing condition with that load. From Bishop California to Reno there is a mountain that is called mammoth for a reason. It goes from roughly 4k feet to 9k feet in about 10 miles. It was 107 degrees in Bishop California and 85 at the top. Mind you this is the east side of Yosemite. I pulled that load passing everyone. I maintained 65 all the way to the top. The highest it rpm I saw was 4500 rpm. It jumped between 5th and 6th depending on the grade. When I got to the top it was suffering from the elevation but still had plenty of power. I think what he says in the video is very true. Under 12k I wouldn't even consider the diesel at this point.

That is good to know! One of the factors for my choice in the F250 7.3 vs Ram 6.4 was the Ike gauntlet results from TFL. Also the simplicity of the 7.3 design is refreshing. 6.4 has the potentially problematic MDS. The ride quality of the F250 is not great (especially when not towing), but hey it's a F250 built to haul and tow. I've read/heard the Ram airbag setup is much more comfy.

As a Ford tech I want to thank you for this PSA. The diesel guys always seem to hate on our 6.2 and 7.3 gas trucks. Those same diesel guys do not tow, tow very low weights or are more interested in racing their 8000+ pound rigs. The 7.3 is a gem... pushrod, no cylinder deactivation, no direct injection, 6 bolt mains, cast iron block... need I say more? Our 6.7 is great; however, too many owners want to come crying to our dealer when they get constant CEL/drivability concerns due to EPA related emissions issues. Sludge/EGR buildup is a nightmare on any modern diesel. I cant be mad though... the diesel guys and their 6.7s keep my workflow strong lol.

@@crewdawg2008 The million dollar question... if you keep or buy your trucks past 100k miles its 5.0 all the way. If on the other hand... you trade in ever 2 years and want something interesting the 3.5 ecoboost is great(the low-mid range torque can move a mountain). Unfortunately the 2.7 ecoboost has had its fair share of serious issues and I do not recommend them at all. Most techs will say the 5.0. Reason? Besides a coolant T connector and water pump(both around 100k miles) we just don't see issues with the 5.0. It is always a solid choice. 5k mile oil intervals or less no matter what you choose. Don't believe that 7,5k mile or 10k mile intervals. Most dealers use synthetic blend not full. Long answer but I think I covered some bases. Haha

Bought used, even then it was over 100k miles, now over 200k and, since I've owned it, had no issues with the drivetrain whatsoever. Regular oil changes are always key ( and yes, I use the recommended motor craft oil and filter). I did test drive a similar year EcoBoost truck, but to me, it seemed weak. Maybe it had been abused previously, but I ended up with a winner with my 5.0 truck.

Adding def, the increased oil capacity, increased purchase price, $1 per gallon diesel premium, fuel filters, etc you will never be able to justify the increase with better mileage. Playing with the numbers, if the gas truck gets 12.2(low on every account I have seen) and the diesel gets 17(high on every account I see unless all highway miles) it takes over 3.7 million miles to break even cost wise. The truck currently has 55,800 miles, at 20,000 miles I put bigger tires on it I think they are 285-70-17 Toyo open country. Up until that point on the open road I would average about 17.5 unloaded cruise set at 70 miles an hour.
When I replaced that tire size it went to about 15 1/2. But running back-and-forth to town out here in the country it will get about 11 or 12. This thing has had zero problems since the day it was purchased. All it is ever done is get an oil change and tire rotation every 4000mi.
I also on a 2020 F2 50 with the 6.2 in it, it has approximately 25,000 miles on it now I purchased a programmer for it from five star tuning which brought its horsepower up to I believe 420.
It’s mileage really is just about the same as the 7.3. Both of those trucks have never been in for anything other than the new death wobble stabilizer.
I said all of that to see this. February 2021 my wife purchased a new f450 turbo diesel. Biggest POS I think I’ve ever owned in my 59 years. It has 11,000 miles on it. It has literally been towed to the shop six times because it was not roadworthy. Junkie sensors derate the truck where you can’t drive it. We purchased this truck strictly the pull a 40 foot horse and cattle trailer. But it’s not dependable enough even drive to town. The area representative for Ford claims if it comes in one more time within 30 days when the system derates it they will purchase it back at full cost.
I have lost total faith in these new diesels, they are strangled so much by emissions that there is no benefit to owning one anymore.

When you’re getting 14.8 mpg at $3.10/gal, against 16.5 mpg at $4.20/gal, never mind the EGR system issues and the exhaust cleaner issues. That might equal out at higher altitude with the turbo, by getting higher mileage efficiency than at lower altitude. But when you add in the extra? $8-9,000 dollars for the diesel, that does buy you the first 2,500-3,000 gallons of gas! That would build a nice cushion for fudging the numbers.

I towed it with my ‘14 6.2L F250. Our route took us over some amazing mountain roads including Wolf Creek Pass in Colorado. For sure if I was towing out there all day every day I’d have a diesel - turbos do a great job of negating the power loss effects of altitude - but my truck did great up and down those passes. Wolf Creek Pass and other mountain passes in Colorado (Monarch, Red Mountain, Rabbit Ears, etc.).....and other passes in Rocky Mountain states.....the switchbacks limit speed. Therefore, trucks with a diesel engine have no advantage over trucks with a gas engine in speed capability. The only slight advantages are launching the load towed from a stop and a smidge on the downhill side of the pass with an exhaust brake. That said, I can definitely state the OEM exhaust brakes do not work nearly as well as aftermarket PacBrakes (exhaust) out of Canada.

Well said for the reasoning for the 7.3 vs 6.7.
In our 2020 f250 STX 6.7 we are seeing about 18MPG average but have seen 24mpg highway, while towing we have seen 15mpg when we slow down (36’, 9000 lbs transcend) - average about 12 MPG while towing at 67mph. Diesel can be a PITA at the smaller stations, I have had to wait for the pumps, but we travel highway most of the time and it’s awesome to have access to the truck stops.
Interesting note, our truck has a payload number of 3195 lbs, just a hair above your 7.3 - but we have the increased GVWR at 10,800lbs to make up for that Diesel engine.
I knew I didn’t need the diesel, but wanted it for the power and ease of access to fuel on the highway.

Thank you for doing this video, debating on gas vs diesel for our next truck. We currently tow a 10,000 lb. trailer with a 6.0L gas GMC, but one thing that concerns me is the high cost of repairs on the diesel vs gas. When fueling, we look for stations that have their pumps parallel to the road, then we have the easiest entrance and exit. But I would love to be able to just pull into the truck stop pumps and forget the added stress!

I traded my 2011 6.7 diesel for a gas truck. I have a 2015 with the 6.2 with 3;73 rears. I only lost 3 MPG towing the same camper. The difference in maintenance cost was the big factor for me

I have had 7.3 diesels, idis ...LOVE LOVE 5.4 and v10s in my vans. No issues with cold starts, quiet powerful and smooth. Fuel economy is outstanding on the gasser. 10-15 either one 5.4 or v10

Yes Sir , Plugs here . I'm loving mine . I got the STX package also because I wanted the higher payload plus I don't trust all the gadget's not to break 2 days after warranty .
Not to mention I can pile like 700 hundred paintings in the back seat .👍

So true about the “upgrades”. Over 90 CPU’s on a typical Lariat. With supply chains the way they are who knows when you’d get your truck fixed.

Moved across the country with a new Penske 16' that was loaded to the max and also pulling a full car carrier. The 7.3 did really well, if not a bit thirsty but that was expected. Only thing was it was surprisingly loud even with factory exhaust.

My 16 6.7 gets about 12.5 to 13 mpg towing my 11k toy hauler, so there really isn't that much of mpg difference + gas is cheaper, 10 speed really makes the difference

This is a fantastic review! Picked up my ‘22 F350 with the Godzilla and 3.73 gears. She is an absolute beast, and the family loves her. Not pulling a damn thing yet, but will get a toy hauler soon.

From what I’ve seen, 3/4 ton trucks only have a GVWR of 10k which is why a gas engine will have higher payload. My 2019 3500 Cummins has an 11,800lb GVWR so the payload is comparable to the gas equivalent which will have 11k GVWR. I usually average 18-19mpg on the interstate here in Wisconsin, gets over 20mpg on backroads and highway driving.

I appreciate this video. I am contemplating upgrading to another superduty. Now driving f150 3.5 ecoboost. I experienced having to drive 30miles round trip to fill my diesel tank. I am leaning toward the 7.5 l f250.

It wasn't many years ago diesels themselves were putting out less specs than the 7.3 Godzilla. A 1996 7.3 Powerstroke was rated at 210hp and 425lb respectively. The 7.5 gasser was 245/400. But yet those old V-8s are still regarded as bulletproof.

Hey, I am 73 years old. In the 80's by rv'd for a whole year and met plenty of people with a gas 350 or 351 pulling 36 ft, 12,000 lb (or more) 5vrs. Of course they did not pull the grades as fast, but they got where they wanted to go!

I’m getting avg 20mpg daily driving and 13mpg towing with my ‘21 f250 6.7 with 3.31 and a 10spd. Only reason I didn’t go with the 7.3 is I would of had to order it. Thanks for the update.

The 20mpg is with 50/50 split of highway and city. If I do all highway it’ll get 23mpg then all city would be 18mpg.

I recently traded my 2020 f-150 with 3.5L eco boost 10 speed transmission for 2022 F-350 6.7L turbo diesel 10 speed transmission. Have to say overall don’t miss the 3.5. So much power in the diesel. MPG’s averaged, highway 18 for 3.5 & 20-22 diesel. Towing was 7 on 3.5 and 12-13 for diesel. Overall at this point I’m liking the diesel. Fuel prices about equaled out. We will see how I feel more long term with repairs and such.

thanks for the comparison. i had a 2014 f150 xlt ecoboost traded it for a 2021 f250 XL with a 7.3 and i love it. i always wanted a diesel but as i get older and "wiser" i really dont need a diesel and the 7.3 seemed to be a sign from god. it tows awesome and gets decent mileage. my f150 had good towing power but my camper would bully it especially in the wind. the f250 pulls it like it isnt there.

I recently drove a UHaul box truck with a detuned 7.3L gas. It did highway speeds effortlessly. I actually wish it was equipped with cruise control because it was difficult controlling the speed.
And I am talking about 70-80mph and Dallas traffic.
    I believe I got 9.0 mpg.

I lived in Rockwall Texas for one year. The freeways and highways in the DFW area are congested and a big mess! Driving 70 - 80 mph in the DWF area (metroplex) is NOT safe!!! It is clowns like you that cause accidents resulting in serious injuries and or death.

No I did exactly the same thing. I got rid of my Diesel because I hated all the issues with DEF and I was pleasantly surprise. I do agree w your MPG. I pull a horse trailer w it and no problems whatsoever. I think going uphill my turbo diesel had a bit more power, but I am more than satisfied with the 7.3L
