2012 International 4300 Durastar with MaxxForce DT Review (Penske Truck)

  • Here is a review of the International 4300 DuraStar with a Supreme Dry Freight body. Its got a 210HP MaxxForece DT connected to a Eaton Ultrashift 5 Speed Automated Manual, 4.11Rear Axle Ratio, it weighs about 6 tons empty, and can go up to 25,500 lbs. For what it is I have no complaints, but I would much rather have a Cummins/Allison combo, because they are much smoother! This truck was retired shortly after I made the review. Can I get a LIKE?If you see this Penske I need a Freightliner next! Sorry I sound a bit sluggish. I filmed this at like 6AM. Want me to do another brand of truck? Chip in on the link in the video! We just rented 2 26ft trucks. One was a 466 and the newest had a Cummins. Both had air brakes. The newer truck had air ride with a single air seat. The older truck got up to speed quicker. We did 849 miles in less than 15 hrs. 70 mph was all they would do. The dash showed 9.4 mpg and used less than 4 gals of DEF between both trucks.

    I drive one of these for a truck company that has the maxxforce 7 and an Allison column shift auto. That was a nice truck and had some balls in the 300 horsepower trim.

      @crazyjdkid  9 років тому

      westernkyrail I am not a big fan of the 7, but I heard they are getting better. This 190hp trim had no power.

    • @westernkyrail
      @westernkyrail 9 років тому

      I like it only in the higher power trims. The DT is better at it's lower power outputs. Although for the same 300 horse, a DT will give you 860 ft lbs of torque, compared to the 7's max of 660 at the same HP.

      Not a problem.i have rented a lot, many of them do that! Diesels separate water from there fuel in a canister under the engine and it might have detected some. Not an issue!

    I can totally tell that budget is way better than penske because I rode a international durastar like that one and the 📻 picked 👆 allot better and had had good fuel mileage and picked up speed allot better. Don't know what acceleration it had though. The penske one not sure. about.

    Is this the 22 feet or the 26 feet rental truck? And what is the total height, pavement to roof top?

      Harry Andruschak This is the 26ft, the biggest one they rent. The total height pavement to the top of the box truck is 12 foot 7 inches. Keep in mind though that Penske has a number of 26ft box trucks of different brands with varying heights.

      It depends on the engine. This truck with the 7.6L MaxxForce DT is fairly reliable but not as reliable as the 6.7L Cummins in a Freightliner.

    • @jaysmith1408
      @jaysmith1408 4 роки тому +1

      The MaxxForce is a very irritable engine. If it’s running well, it’s a great durable, powerful, and reliable engine. If it’s in a bad mood, or you’re trying to start it below freezing, it’s living hell dealing with it. Almost a moot point however, they have almost completely been retired.

    So I watched this video before renting a truck and had to come back and mention the Radio. Either you got lucky or I got very unlucky because my radio had a hard time picking up channels, wouldn't read any media devices (I tried IPhone, IPOD, my android and even a zune lol) and it wouldn't even take my CDs. I put one in and it wouldn't insert all the way into the device, even if I gave it a push. Every truck will be different, but all and all I would defiantly rent from them again. Truck was perfect other than the radio and the fact it had a hard time getting up to speed with such an under powered engine.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  7 років тому

      That's odd! The radios in these trucks aren't necessarily straight forward to operate either. They are kind of difficult to control. The radio in this one had rather good audio quality. But besides that it was hard to figure out what buttons to press. Yeah these International's with th DTs aren't speedy by any means, but trust me they are way better than the gas trucks at Uhual! Next time if you are wanting a more powerful truck with some better features, ask them for a Freightliner or Hino when you reserve the truck! Thanks for watching!

    Us in the bus world call it a hydraulic brake pump. I'm surprised International didn't put an Allison transmission in it, it's what they put in the buses.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  9 років тому +1

      Nashawn03-12 I was hoping for air brakes, but you get what you get. Penske is cheap, they look for what will make them the most money. I would imagine that the Allison transmission is a costly upgrade. This is my first time coming across an Eaton, makes me appreciate all the Allisons I have used. I am glad they didn't cheap out too much though, they at least had the common sense to put the DT into it. I would have brought it back if it had the 7 in it. Now Penske gets them with the Cummins, thank goodness.

    My old company is selling a 2001 International 4300 24ft box truck with an eaton 6 speed manual, DT466 and 380,000 miles. I want to buy it but not sure how much to offer. It has known overheating issues going up some hills and some electrical issue with cabin lights, the lift gate also blows fuses. Does anybody have an idea how much the truck is worth.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  8 років тому

      +crazyjdkid It is a 4300, maybe it was a 2002 model but I know it is a first year model of the 4300. Still, do you think 6-7k would be a good deal. They also Have a 98 4700 with a 380K DT466 and 7 speed Eaton manual.that one has a bad clutch and gauge cluster and minor damage to the container, I'm interested in that one as well.

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  8 років тому

      You would have some more negotiating room with the 4700. For the 4300,I think 6-7k would be good, given that the truck was well taken care of and has good tires. I would start on the lower side and present the issues that are known. Is it Air or Hydraulic brakes?

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  6 років тому +2

      When its round trip you pay by the day and the mile. My most recent truck (not this one, look at my channel) was $55 a day and $0.50 cents a mile. Plus $20 for the LDW, $18 for Liability and $7 of misc costs. Out the door for 100 miles fully insured was a little less than $150 and diesel was another $30. Those rates are the cheapest I have gotten out of all my times renting from them, and I have a known account with them. They offer a lot of discounts than Uhual or Ryder so be sure to try any discounts you can think of. Thanks for watching and happy to answer any further questions!

    • @PureSilver07
      @PureSilver07 6 років тому

      crazyjdkid that doesn’t seem too bad, the only difficult part is that I’m not sure how many miles exactly I will drive. I’m using one to drive around in and practice maneuverability for a couple days so I can get the hang of something similar on my CDL B test. Thanks for the info and quick response. Most truck videos I have questions for I still don’t have a response lol

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  6 років тому +1

      Yes these trucks are great for preparing for a CDL test. All their newer trucks have Air Brakes (don't need a CDL for them as they are below 26k), unlike the older truck in this video with hydro brakes. So it's nice to be able to run through the air brake portion of the pre-trip inspection as well. I always had issues trying to guess how many miles I would go, if your in a parking lot you won't put on much. Let them know what you plan to do and they should be able to help you out!

    • @PureSilver07
      @PureSilver07 6 років тому

      crazyjdkid Yeah that’s awesome man, I didn’t know that a regular license could rent these until I checked out your vids. I didn’t even have the intention to rent one. I will do a lot of maneuverability practice but I also will spend a decent amount of High way time. I’m only 22 and don’t know any CDL holders so I’m on my own but thank god for UA-cam and the manual ofc lol

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  6 років тому +1

      I'm 22 as well! You should be good! The hardest part you will run into is finding a CDL rated vehicle to test on and someone to bring it to the testing center. I find city driving to be the most difficult. Good luck!

    • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  6 років тому

      Like I said in the previous one, it all depends on the specific truck. They make this truck for a number of different applications. There is a build plate inside the door with a weight rating, if the weight rating says its over 26,000lbs you need a CDL. If its below that then you don't need one. You can't just look at the truck and tell if you need one or not they look identical for the most part, you have to look at the build plate. When someone buys a truck like this from International they spec it out to how much weight they need to carry, and whatever the weight the buyer picks determines the necessity of a CDL. The only things that determine CDL is that weight rating and number of passenger it can haul. The Freightliner M2 in my other video is a CDL truck rated at 27,500lbs, and it looks exactly like the non-CDL trucks.

    I rented one. Not a bad truck, good fuel mileage, but Penske maintenance is idiotic. The headlights were adjusted to target oncoming traffic drivers' eyes on dim; bright was for hunting owls. Out on a two lane highway in the boonies, gets dark, I turn on the headlights. Every oncoming vehicle driver goes crazy and nothing I can do. Wonder I didn't get shot or have a head-on. Alternator runs at 14.4 volts by the gauge, which over powers the lights. Penske uses something like motor oil for windshield washer fluid. Bright headlight indicator will blind you, assuming you can use bright.

      Didn't drive mine much at night so couldn't really tell much about the lights with mine. • @crazyjdkid
      @crazyjdkid  9 років тому

      First I never said this truck had air brakes! Do you even know what a booster pump is? It is a electric operated pump that boosts the brake pressure, yes it does operate every now and then when the truck is running but also works when the engine is off in the event that you loose vacuum pressure from the crankcase and you need brakes(such as going down a hill with engine failure) Its a safety to ensure its similar to air brake standards which has an air reserve and a gear powered air compressor.

      +Tommy Bragalone Ahhh! I got 13-14mpg which is really good. But I see the problem you where having. It sounds as though your truck was having DPF regeneration problems, very common on 2007-2011 diesel trucks. Which would burn through a lot of fuel. I drove 100 miles, and I spent less than $25.

      +Gordo Alcaraz Thanks man! That's what happens when stress from college builds up and messes with your body. Glad you enjoyed the video!

    Allison is a good transmission , you keep knocking that Eaton Fuller trans , it is actually the best part of that truck International Harvester trucks , these 4300 & the Prostar "s are nothing but JUNK , its a very poorly engineered truck , 1st the AC system is a night are , the inside is all plastic , the stupid fuse panel is right behind that area where a glove box would normally be , it wouldn't be so much of a problem if people would keep there feet off the dash , there wiring and connections have a lot to be desired , we have at this time 10 of them straight trucks and tractors , I only fix them I have no control on what my boss buys , he may like the write offs for there expensive parts , but honestly the old harvesters were much better than this JUNK Frank t

      +Frank Travaglioi I much prefer the Freightliner Business class (M2), I would like to try a Hino as well.I would really like to rent this again and do another video with the Cummins powered Durastar, maybe it powers the Eaton a little better.Unless they switched to Allison. Those old International 4700's were and still are a very tough and reliable truck. Emission compliance has ruined many manufacturers. Thanks for watching!

      +crazyjdkid M2s are very nice, they are amazing. Eaton Fuller is extremely good for manuals but Allison is the best for autos. I like manuals.

      +Stewie140 The transmission in the truck was an Automated Manual. So it wasn't technically an automatic, and didn't behave as an auto. They no longer use this transmission(UltraShift HV), instead they are going to a Dual Clutch Fully Automatic transmission, similar to that of the Allison. Apparently they can idle forward and can hill hold. The new one is call the Eaton Procision 7-Speed.

      +Stewie140 Depends on what MAXXFORCE your talking about. The DT is a great engine and has been around since the 70s. The MAXXFORCE 7("6.4L Powerstroke") is junk though.

      Im not talking about the DT466 engine. That was an AMAZING engine and still is. A MaxxForce DT is junk because of all the emissions stuff thrown on it.
