    I hope everyone is having a good long weekend! Today I am behind the wheel of this awesome powerful 6.7L Cummins Turbo Diesel Engine. and we are towing a heavy trailer behind this ram 2500 diesel.
    so the first notable thing was the squat with the fully loaded up trailer. this truck squatted an extra inch over the F250 powerstroke which I think is probably associated with ram coil suspension set up.
    one I got on the road, the cummins exhaust brake is absolutely amazing. it is pretty powerful and will stop the truck very well. when I was on the highway going down some steep hills the exhaust brake kept us at the perfect speed and is by far better then the Powerstrokes exhaust brake
    in terms of acceleration, the Powerstroke was a much faster engine with a full load behind it. the Cummins did feel a little sluggish on the top end performance in comparison to the Powerstrokes top end power.
    another very notible thing about the Cummins is the engine design. this engine is an inline 6 design which has a number of advantages. the first being the natural advantage of making torque extremely well and very low int he RPM band. this is amazing for towing.
    fuel economy in the Cummins when towing was a little bit worse then the Powerstroke but with 14,000lbs behind the truck the Cummins was a pretty efficient engine.
    overall the low end torque coming out of this 6.7L Cummins diesel engine is amazing to see, this resulted in the truck almost never having to downshift on hills which was cool to see.

    We have a 2016 2500 short bed with the 800 lb-foot 6.7. We particularly wanted the coil spring rear axle, which on this truck is a 6500lb gross rear axle weight.
    We pull a 38’ Pinnacle fifth wheel that grosses at 15,000.
    With a 3.43 rear end, I cruise at 63mph with the 68RFE locked in 5th.
    Pulls the Rockies on I-70 without a problem.
    60,000 miles without any problems. The combo turbo/ exhaust brake is great.
    Just love my (wife’s) truck!

      Sir I pull a solitude with the same weight but I have a 2016 3500. I’m curious why you went with the 2500 instead of 3500.

      That potentially puts you over sticker payload by quite a bit… I’m sure you’ve done your research. You’re well under axle load though. Just bought our 2500 and looking forward to towing our fifth wheel soon.

    Powerstroke may have had to downshift, but it also has a 3.31 rear gear vs a 3.73 in the Ram. The 10 speed in the Ford has basically the same ~0.63:1 final overdrive, but 10 gear and 9th gears are actually really close together with 9th only being a 0.69:1 overdrive. Multiplying the 0.62*3.73 in the Ram gets you an OD ratio of 2.31:1 vs 10th gear in the ford gets you 2.08:1 and 9th about 2.28:1.
    That'll get you pretty much the same RPM in the Ford in 9th at 110km/h (70mph) as in the Ram in 6th at the same speed. Now if i remember right the Ford did downshift further so his point still stands but just showing that going 10 to 9 isn't the jump in RPM you might think.
    Fyi RPMs at ~110 km/h (exactly 70mph) for both trucks in their OD and direct drive gears (used same 33.2 inch tire for both as a 275/70R18 is basically standard on lower trims nowadays)
    Ford:
    7th:~2340rpm
    8th:~1995rpm
    9th:~1610rpm
    10th:~1480rpm
    Ram (6 speed so 2 OD gears only):
    4th:~2640rpm
    5th:~2150rpm
    6th:~1650rpm
    Both truck's peak torque is in that 1600-1700rpm range too.
    As you can see the Ram in 6th is basically equal to the Ford in 9th. Goes to show while I do think the Ram still prbably does build low end torque a little easier, the Ford still has a ton of it too, and its 10th would put it 130rpm lower so harder to make Torque and Horspower. Although like I said early I'm pretty sure the Ford did have to drop to 8th at points but still.
    None of this is to say I don't agree with the video. I do personally think the Cummins is the best with low end torque and likewise towing, and if you put the 10 speed with 3.31 gears behind the Cummins it'd probably maintain 10th easier than the Power stroke. Just trying to add some context as to why the Ford might've behaved a little differently.

    I like your new testing format. It’s great for comparisons between trucks. Have you thought about having a spreadsheet with all the data (50-110 times, fuel econ, general observations, etc.)? I think having something like that would be beneficial and help compare models year to year.

    I am actually really happy you chose this weight. It is heavy, and most people are not max towing. They might be towing with max payload, but that is a different set of issues. When you touched on how the truck took the hill without shifting that was super interesting. I do wonder if it would get slightly better MPG if it was down a gear? Do you recall if you were in tow mode?

You are a person who rents the vehicles to show us the good and bad on a honest way I watch other UA-camrs now they’re starting to get invited from the big three for reviews and they don’t want to lose that but The honesty is not there anymore I asked 2 very non-UA-camrs for the 2024 Chevy or GMC. If it’s any changes on exhaust brake, they both skipped to answer the question because they don’t want to lose invitations from ford and GM lol.

    9:15 So good! I bought a 24 Longhorn Ram, dream truck! BUT I was used to the powerstroke snappy power and I was let down that it didn’t breath fire like the afore. So I went back to a 24 powerstroke. I did appreciate the chill towing power of the Cummins. I just didn’t expect it. I am now missing many things about the Ram as far as interior, stereo, headlights, clearance lights, softer ride, MUCH better auto deploy running boards that my wife can actually get in and out without a stool, fits in my garage without modifications, etc. I am thinking about trading back the the exact same Ram I traded in to get all that back. I think I was not expecting the difference in the lack of raw punchy power like the powerstroke, but you made some great points about the benefit of the chill pullingnpower of the Cummins. I have talked to the dealership. May go trade tomorrow. Problem… I love them both! 😂😂. Thanks for the amazing mechanically based perspective on these. Really enjoying the channel. Keep it up!

    RAM 2500 with Cummins engine without HO; simply wonderful its performance and endurance.
    Hard work is well bearable; but please don't forget its maintenance, because the ram knows how to kick your head, your wallet or both! 😮😢

      they have some great low end torque that is forsure! maintenance is key on these engines, without good maintenance you'll end up spending more money.

    This was only the low output cummins too, hopefully you get a chance to test the HO which is more comparable to the powerstroke.

    Another great video Alex! Yeah I like the Ram. I have a 2005 'Dodge' Ram in same color quad cab short bed with the 5.9 Cummins. Such a nice truck. We have had it since it was a pup and has 49k miles now. It is super reliable. We use it to pull our Airstream. I know you don't like the 68RFE transmission to much, I sure would love to have six speeds instead of just four. I have the 48RE in my Dodge. I tell you, wide RPM swings between gears, as I only have 4 and torque converter lockup. I have changed the transmission fluid regularly in mine and it hasn't given me any issues, (Knock on wood). Do you know if anyone swaps the 'Aisin' or even the '68' transmissions into the older 3rd gen Dodge Rams ? Is it doable? It would be cool to have a few more gears.

    Those coils will squat almost like a half ton, BUT I decided to go that route for my needs because compared to my F350 Dually, the Ram is a Cowboy Cadillac! The best ride of any HD brand hands down. True, not NEARLY as quick as the Powerstroke (I think I could squeal the tires while pulling a heavy trailer with my PS) or Duramax, but boy it pulls so smooth and effortless. Yes the low end torque is so chill and amazingly powerful without even breathing hard. Love that automatic exhaust brake too. I am amazed and in love with my Ram. Other reasons I chose the Ram is we are in hail country and the Ram 2500 is the only HD pickup that will fit in my standard garage. Everything else is much longer. Ford is also quite a bit taller so the Ram is the sweet spot for me. Weekend warrier puller and amazing daily cruiser.

    I’m looking at Rams site now, the 6.7, 3.73, 4x4, crew cab, 6’4” bed is indeed 19,980lbs towing. Where are you getting only 17,200lbs?? I understand payload drops with each truck and more options bring down the payload number on the door sticker but I don’t see where the towing drops. For example the 6.4l Hemi online says 3340 payload while my door sticker says 3156 payload because I have more options. But again don’t see where the towing drops.

    I am moving out of the V10 Gasser motorhome and into a 5th wheel, I am tired of 15MPH and 4 MPG on a moderate hill climb coupled with high Canadian fuel prices. A diesel makes more sense but they are insanely expensive and Ford and Chevy even more so, so I want to get this purchase right. The plan is a 15 K-ish trailer with a 2 K-ish payload, I am torn between 2021 3500 and 2500, this will not be a daily driver truck. I know a 2500 would have the capacity, but I am conflicted if I ever want to upgrade to a larger trailer I will be limited and won't be able to afford a bigger truck. Should I make the 3500 purchase now and have the capacity but a stiffer ride or go with a 2500. BTW, I am finding that the prices in Canada don't differ much between the 2500 and 3500. Great channel BTW!!!

    Ill stick with my 2006 3/4 ton mega cab...no emissions, paid off, very simple and fun. The new trucks r super nice. Just dont wanna deal with emissions

    I had a ford 6.7 overheat and shut down on the highway. Had it tow to mechanic they found a little bit of fuel in oil as well as little anti freez in oil pan. Motor still turns Although hard they Are telling me that the motor is junk . But they also hate the ford 6.7 to work on . Does this sound right or should i get a second opinion 😊

    As a 20 year Dodge/Ram Cummins guy, I'm sorry to say they have allowed them to wither on the vine. While I get it that they have stubbornly clung to the 10K lbs GVWR for the 2500 because that is the limit for Class 2, it's time to join the others in ignoring it, especially with the weight penalty of the Cummins. The 68RFE should have been put out to pasture long ago. The Aisin, while durable, is extremely crude in operation, and yes I owned one. How is it that the HDs have still not gotten the cab that came out in 2018 with the early intro of the 2019 1500? Sorry Ram, you had better pull your head out before it's too late. Wake up!

      Not to mention the new hydraulic lifters failing and destroying the engine. Cummins found a way to kill the best part of the truck.

    I had owned a 2010 Ram 2500 Cummins. Serviced by the book as i bought the maintenance contract. Biggest pile of crap. Leaked fluid and oil every other month. My driveway looked like a Jackson Pollak painting. Things fell apart, fender flares coming loose. Cabin lights flickered on and off. Then, on a trip across Nevada, the water pump seized. When it seized, it snapped the serpentine belt, and i was dead on Hwy 50. Had it towed back across from Austin to Fallon. Towed from Fallon to Reno to a Ram Dealership for repairs.
    My back hurt like hell after several hours in the seat. Several times, the ignition would crank but wouldn't turn over. Then it would turn over and fire up. It was the top trim model and no power tow mirrors. 🤦‍♂️ just a pile or crap.
    Bought a 2017 Ford 6.7. Not one problem for 41,000 miles. A few issues like sun roof track broke and the rear sensors went out. Got them fixed under extended warranty. Never failed to fire up and get me out and get me home. My back doesnt hurt after long hours behind the wheel. No problems with trim falling off or electrical gremlins. Now at a happy 114,000 miles. Much better vehicle. No matter how good the Cummins is, if the rest of the truck is junk, the entire truck is crap.

    Sure wish you would do a more scientific evaluation IE use timers, etc. to get a more accurate idea of performance VS just a seat of the pants method of, “it feels faster or slower”.

    What do you suggest a gas or a diesel truck when you’re going to be towing a 7,500LBD RV trailer a few times in the spring to fall season? Also being used as a daily driver?

      For occasional towing, a diesel is overkill. The maintenance is much more, and it will be hard to justify. However, there is a cool factor to owning a diesel. At some point, gotta have it wins the illogical argument

      @@ChrisACiufokinda my boat. Two track cars and a trailer for summer then just a daily driver after. Love the Hemi but it’s just not a cool 6.7. If I could of found a 4.10 Hemi at 17,070 towing I would of went with that. 19,980 is just cooler too. Although losing 900lbs of payload sucks with the 6.7.

    I like the comparisons, but I have no concern if truck A can make the run 2mins faster than truck B. I want to know which is the best bang for my dollar and what will last the longest without mechanical issues.

      Exactly! I have always thought it was absurd to compare speeds of a truck. So many factors dictate speed that’s it pointless.

      bang for your buck is a gas engine all day long. but yes speed is not really that big a factor but it is just another factor to look at when comparing 2 engines.

    I dig your videos but you started out throwing Ram under the bus when you said “with the infamous 6.7 Cummins”.
    Infamous: having an extremely bad reputation: an infamous city. deserving of or causing an evil reputation; shamefully malign; detestable: an infamous deed.
    Anyways again I felt like a correction is in order much like your did when explaining what transmission comes with the Ram 2500.

    I actually hope they don't go to 10 speeds. The 10 speed allison in ford/chevy has clunky shifting and makes a constant high pitched whine.

    My experience mirrors this. While the third gen power stroke is an absolute rocket, it just won’t lope along in top gear near as well as the Cummins.
    On the topic of the transmission, the 68rfe has 3 gears from direct drive to top, and the torqshift has 4.

      I believe 4th is 1:1 on the 68RFE. and ya I was just amazed how well the cummins stayed in top gear.

      @@TheGettyAdventures yep, 4th is 1:1, then .81 and .62. 7th is 1:1 on the 10 speed and then it has 8th 9th 10th. So really just one more gear from 1:1 through top gear if that makes sense.

    I'm in the market for my first ever diesel, i dont really need to tow but will need to go far distance a few weeks out of the year so I'm wondering if the ram 2500 or 3500 would be a better fit? Any thoughts or comments will be greatly appreciated

      Depends on how heavy any loads would be. If you're putting a truck camper on the back instead of towing I'd highly recommend the 3500 instead of the 2500.
      That being said if you're traveling near empty for long distances I'd rather pick a 3/4 ton due to a mildly more comfy ride. Another factor to consider is if the fuel savings of the diesel are able to outweigh the extra costs/maintenance of a modern diesel.
      Personally that 7.3l gasser from ford is really twisting my fictional wallet right now since I live in a 12k fifth wheel it's all I really need afor towing a few times a year and will be cheaper to buy and run despite lower fuel mileage.

      @nickzalan4762 I more or less just want to get into the diesel world and will be moving to Alaska so I'll have a 4,000 mile trip back home when I visit so not really towing anything unless someone needs help moving something.
      I have a 2001 gmc Sierra with a 6.0L already for the wife and she loves it so I was thinking about getting me a diesel

      @nickzalan4762 is the 68RFE not that bad of a transmission? I would really only upgrade for that reason and like in one of his last videos Alex pointed out if I go top of the line then it's only like a 3,400 upgrade for the top of the line 3500 and 3,400 would be worth the transmission alone, not saying I would go top of the line but trying to make sure I make the right decision

    Man you don't know what you're talking about-the 6.7 Cummins is just programming that restricts the power up at the higher RPM. Did you know that the marine version of the 6.7 Cummins is rated at 550hp at 3,300rpm?

    Funny how comparing a 485lbft@3800rpm gas V8 to a 850lbft@1800rpm diesel I6 seem right? That 850lbft comes in at 1800rpm the Ford powerstroke peaks at 1600. The parts you are excluding here are the ratios involved. That powerstoke you tested had a 3.31 axle and ths ram is automatically has a 3.73. If you were to do the math at the wheels that Cummins has the mechanial advantageeven with less engine torque(top OD gears are similar). The comment about I6 RPM limitation, is spot on and 90% of people(including your tests) drive with RPM not the torque band. The Powerstroke 5 more torque than the cummins EVERYWHERE IN THE RPM BAND, except from 1750-1950rpm(SO Powerstroke) you should make a 3500 DRW test for the 4.10 ram and ford. You will see where the shine is and isn't. The issue with your testing method is you dont have control over what you get. That 3.5EB you tested was a 3.31 axle. You wont find a cometitor truck(GM or Ram) with over 10k tow rating with a high speed axles(let alone a 11700lb). GMs best with a 3.42 is 9200lbs, RAM 1500(5.7 V8 w 8spd) with 3.21 as 8440lbs. Rams 5.7 with a 3.92 with 10470lbs, still less than the Ford 3.5EB with a 3.31(11200 2wd, 11300lbs 4wd).

      The standard output powerstroke with a 3.31 axle has a mechanical disadvantage just in the ratios and axles. At 110km/h(68mph) the powerstroke in 10th is turning 1370rpm(just under 1000lbft available) putting that through the math it's
      970lbft x 0.61:1 x 3.31 = 1950lbft to the wheels.
      The Ram with the 68rfe in 6th is 0.63:1 so at 110km/h(68mph) on the same tires(275/70R18 is 33.2" tall) would be turning 1620rpm(around 800lbft). There for applying 1950lbft to the wheels(830lbft x 0.63:1 x 3.73:1 = 1950lbft). The ford will naturally pull back a gear(well under the peak torque) so it will run 8th(0.85:1) making it 1950rpm(available 1050lbft) 1050lbft x 0.85:1 x 3.31:1 = 2954lbft(available, not utilizing that much) that ford would walk away from the Ram on the same grade with the same trailer with ease.

      First of all I appreciate the comment and all the math! you are not wrong in an perfect world I would be able to get two trucks with both 3.73 gears - maybe one day. but your theory will be put to the test in part 2. I go up some bigger hills and the Cummins struggles in comparison to the powerstroke.

    Love that motor. Would definitely have to go with the 3500 and the Asin. The 2500’s in the Ram has a HORRIBLE Tranny. Have has nothing but problems.

    Cummins has its advantages in-terms of strength and simplicity. Easier engine to work on. When it comes time to replace the head gaskets on those aluminum duramax heads. You’ll know what I’m talking about.

      Parent bore is all you get in this small light(1100lbs) engine world. The design of the 5.9/6.7 will always be this junk that it is. It's a tractor engine(Case IH/Cummins colaboration). You wouldn't be able to use the motor in most of the current applications

    A lot of the 68RFE problems are from jack asses doing big tunes or modifying the engine with big turbos or injectors.
    If you keep your Cummins stock you’ll likely not have problems with it.

      68RFE is a beefed up 545RFE. They were not great behind the first gen hemi. 68RFE is not up to the job of the towing with the Cummins. The ratios are wonky too(worse than the Aisin spread)

    This 2500 Ram Cummins with the rear air suspension you didn't mention! You did mention 68 RFE transmission! Junk not for heavy towing get the 3500 with the heavy duty Aisin transmission shifts designed for towing! Speed not key. Torque is key! Ram #1 in exhaust braking! #1 in comfort. Towing stay away from the Ram 2008-2023 Ram Cummins 2500 with the 68 RFE you will regret it! Don't buy it! The one you want Ram 1997-2007 Ram 2500 Cummins 2,3 gen models. These are Smog exempt models. The weak 🔗 48RE transmission.

    There’s really no comparison. Dodge has made no attempt to keep up with the Ford 6.7L. As someone who’s driven 45,000 miles up and down the east coast over the past year, I can honestly say the vast majority of trucks I see pulled over with the hoods popped are Rams. Ford has the diesel truck market cornered and steaming ahead.

Not saying i would but just saying its just a stupid number that chevy and ford fudge and ram hasnt yet!

      Look at GMs 2500 diesels. Oh wait that contribute actually have one. All the diesel 2500s are over 11000lbs GVWR, that's well into class 3. That's just to be competitive on payload with Ford.

      ​@@HVTMuddvainthey can't fudge them its a legal number they are liable for if it's wrong. That is intentionally misleading customers and that will be a class action lawsuit. Payload is the GVWR minus the curb weight as the vehicle currently sits. Never should ANYONE exceet the GVWR or either GAWR. In the event of a collision the driver can be denied any and all claims, as you willfully exceed the design specifications of the vehicle. Same rules and laws apply to SEMI trucks, except overweight laws apply well before the failure point of the axles ratings on semis.

By whos standard just because a 2500 chevy or ford have a higher number doesnt mean they altered anything notably to make up for that ram has coil springs in there 2500 that is the main reason they havent gone up in ratings with chevy and ford they also ride 100% better in the 3/4 class because of that. I never said it was okay to do im just telling you what i see DAILY just drove to wyoming this week and drove all over majority of the trucks we saw were 2500 cummins 06-23 yr models some duallys doing it the right way too of course but if theres 3 axles on an RV its most likely over the payloads of a cummins 2500 but is done allllllll the time has been that way for decades. My personal 22 2500 cummins has a payload of 2200 and i know for a fact that covers probably less than half the fifth wheels out there todate however it can tow over slightly just fine with no drawbacks in handling especially with air bags to assist the stability issues and change out the hitch to a gooseneck helps tremendously without the added weight of the fifthwheel hitches in the bed. Like i stated ford and chevy fudged their numbers higher for sales you can say all day they cant please ford put the wrong sized tires on the ford explorer for what 4-5 yrs before admitting they fudged statistics to allow them to sell them that way dont buy into the lies im not no conspiracy theorist by any means but i know what money can do for you or a company to get by and make more. Just cause a truck can do something doesnt mean you should. 3/4 ton class imho shouldnt go over 18-20k and most people that own them shouldnt go over 12-15k cause they dont know how to drive with that weight. And it takes years to get “professional” level skills in that in general
