I haven't heard many people describe Ed's arc so well. He's definitely a sympathetic character, who in the end gave his life to protect his friends despite all his fuckups.
Hey Raymond! Yeah, very true. The minute he talked about driving Peter's car, and then upgraded to the Jag within the hour, I was like, "Oh yeah, this guy is going out in a blaze of glory." And then as you point out, lived his best life all day but also consistently did everything he could for others.
Edgar Wright is an incredible director. His love for cinema shines through with every little detail. Well worth watching all of his movies.
Thanks Joel! Yeah I’m an instant fan after this movie. Can’t wait to watch Hot Fuzz.
You said that Shaun starts as an Everyman and becomes a hero. I agree with the first part, but not the second. He does not became a hero who saves everyone, but he becomes someone who tries to save everyone and fails. Out of their whole group of 7, only 2 survived and Yvonne was the one who actually saved them (with the help from the army). But I think, that is really the beautiful message of this film.
Shaun starts as someone who is not satisfied with his life, but does not have the strength to change it. He is stuck in his unhappiness. Liz breaks up with him for this very reason, she can't bear to be stuck in the hole with him for the rest of her life. But the events of this film really change Shaun. He does all that is in his might to step up and save everyone. He more or less fails, but that is good enough for Liz. We really need more movies with this kind of message.
I love that you’re watching the cornetto trilogy; Shaun of the Dead is such a fantastic movie. It really benefits from a second (third, fourth, fifth…) rewatch, as you noticed, every other scene is some sort of Easter egg or reference (either to classic horror or to itself). There are plenty of articles online detailing the things you might have missed which are fun read, and I’m sure you’ll have plenty of comments here with them! A personal favourite, the conversation Ed and Shaun have at the Winchester after the break up forecasts the rest of the movie. Bloody Mary (woman in the garden), bite at the kings head (Phillip), a couple at the little princess (David & Diane), stagger back back here for shots (stagger back pretending to be zombies before firing shots). It’s such an expertly crafted movie that really rewards eagle eyed fans - I’d love to see a spilling the peach tea after watching all of the movies in the trilogy!
Ahhhhh I have to do my homework now so that I can appreciate it even more. Thank you for pointing these elements out! I knew I was watching quality within the first 10 minutes! Can't wait for Hot Fuzz :)
"[about Ed] He's not my boyfriend!"
"[handing beer to Shaun] It might be a bit warm, the cooler's off."
"Thanks, babe. [winks at Ed]"
Fun Fact: George A. Romero, creator of the movies to which this movie pays homage and lampoons, was so impressed with Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright's work that he asked them to cameo in Land Of The Dead (2005) as zombies.
Multiverse Sequel Fact: Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright considered a sequel that would replace zombies with another monster, but decided against it, as they were pleased with this movie as a stand-alone product, and thought too many characters died to continue the story. The proposed title idea "From Dusk Till Shaun" did have an afterlife as a mocked up poster that can be seen in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse (2018).
Background Noise Fact: Many of the zombie extras are fans of Spaced (1999), which also starred Simon Pegg and Nick Frost and was also directed by Edgar Wright. They were recruited through the Spaced Out fan website. All of the newsreaders and television presenters are real people portraying themselves.
Lol @ "Thanks, babe" Perfect timing and expressions. So good.
And wow, what an amazing comment! Thank you so much, @BigGator5. This is exactly why I love having this channel, because I learn so much that otherwise would just go right past me. I really, really appreciate you taking the time to write this out.
I love this movie. I would agree that it shouldn't be classified as a horror movie. It's a horror comedy. Not the same thing at all, but those types of movies are still great. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is another example!
Hey there! Ahhh Tucker and Dale vs. Evil is high on my list too!!
@@DavidvsFilm Oh sweet, I was going to suggest that if you hadn't seen it! Glad Tucker and Dale is high up there and hopefully we'll get to see you react to it soon!
Since you asked so nicely a Cornetto is a special kind of ice cream cone with chocolate around the top and a wrapper over the top. They're usually sold by ice cream vans & corner shops.
Thanks Raphael! Yeah, and now that I know I can’t get one here in the US, looks like I better book a trip..
I love this movie. Favorite part is using the Queen song to beat up the zombies in the pub. And somebody correct me if I'm wrong but I think I heard they all had the music in their ears so they could get the timing exactly on time
Yes!!! I loved that too. I wish I could include more of the actual music without angering the copyright overlords. But it was amazing.
Great reaction. I love Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. It has probably been mentioned but the sitcom Spaced was their big breakout success (also directed by Edgar Wright and co-written/starring them along with the lady who plays Yvonne in this film) and is well worth hunting down. About 12 episodes of utter joy and includes an episode that was the seed for this film. I look forward to you doing Hot Fuzz - my personal fave of the "trilogy" and once again full of brilliant set-ups and payoffs and featuring a stellar cast of classic British actors.
Actually not yet, so thank you, @DonkeyWerks! A couple of people name dropped it, but I wasn't sure what it was. I appreciate you cluing me in :)
The other group of survivors isn’t just known actors; they are the main cast’s counterparts from their earlier work: Tim and Daisy from Spaced, Tim and Dawn from the Office, Bernard and Fran from Black Books, and then Marsha from Spaced. Then there’s Matt Lucas.
Oh my God I didn't know that! See I'm at that point in my British movie/television experience where I can spot actors, and I am becoming more familiar with the content, but I can't cross-relate like that yet. That's awesome though, Joe, thank you for telling me-
I loved watching your reaction to this! Simon Pegg is so great in this and all of the three movies in the trio of films. I love him in the Mission Impossible movies, as well. As far as the Cornetto Trio goes, Shaun of the Dead has to be my favorite. As you already said, the Ed character is really touching, and the relationship between Shaun and Ed is so well done. The movie is so smart, funny, and clever. It was also the first, so the way it is edited and cut was just new (I remember laughing so much and having a great time). The next two are fun, too.
Hi Pamela! It was just as you said- a great time. So much fun. When it comes to comedy for me, I am big on timing and facial expressions. In my opinion, physical comedy is fine, but better suited for the stage; where exaggerated performances are often more fun because you can't see the actors' faces as clearly from the audience. By contrast, with film and television, the best comedic actors know how to really use their face and turn an expression because the cameras are so close. And this cast nailed that.
Hi David. ive been through some really tough times recently due to mental health. your videos put a smile on my face and give me something to look forward to. Please keep doing what your doing because im sure its helping a lot of other people to. thank you
Hugz and strength mate xx
Hey Eli!! I'm sorry to hear you've been having a rough go of it. I certainly know what that's like. You know when I first started doing the movie reactions on the channel, it really was just to have fun and watch some movies with new online friends. But what I didn't count on was truly getting to know some of the people on here and making some real connections. So I want to thank you for sharing this and letting me be a part of your day, even if it is for just a few minutes. I hope I can make some good videos for you! (Heads up though, we got some horror coming for the Fall, so I don't know much help those will be lol. I'll try to work on some bad jokes.)
@@DavidvsFilm hi david wow thanks for replying. im sure there are many people that you help by giving them laughter. never stop being you, you are a legend. love from the UK
having been a zombie in a very low-budget film, can confirm that both the filming and audition were very fun.
No way! Really?? Haha, I can imagine. That's awesome.
For an earlier work of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg you could check out the series SPACED, which was co-written by as well as starring Jessica Stevenson, who has a smaller role as Yvonne in this movie. The second episode of the series was actually the inspiration to make this film.
Thank you, Michael!! I appreciate the heads-up about it :)
Great reaction! I had to giggle when you referred to the pigeon eating guy as , 'The Ozzy Osbourne of the UK', because Ozzy is actually from the UK 😂
Oh my God right?? Most oblivious moment I've ever had reacting hahaha. Oh well
He's so English, I don't know how anyone could make that mistake...
This is one of those movies that gets funnier the more you watch it🤣
Oh I believe it. I already noticed a little of that as I was editing the reaction. Also, I noticed other things I had missed. For example, I caught that the “drunk” girl in the garden was the grocery checker from the beginning, but I did not notice that the zombie groom who came in the their front door was behind Shaun earlier at the store.
@@DavidvsFilm exactly! Also, extremely quotable💕
Edgar Wright. The trilogy is great and all, but I think his more recent movies, Last Night in Soho and Baby Driver, are something special.
Thanks, Will! Yeah, I'm new to ol' Edgar, so I'm looking forward to exploring more of his films.
A Resident Evil show by Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright would never get cancelled, period
Your summation is fantastic.
Loved going on this fun ride with you.
Yayyy! So happy you reviewed one of my fave films! Thanks for all the great content
Thank you, Michelle!! It did not disappoint! This movie came up almost immediately as a recommendation last year when I started the channel, but I didn't get to it before we moved out of "spooky season". And while I know it's good any time of year, I really wanted to wait until around this time. Loved it.
If anyone deserved to die it was definietly Wal-Mart Harry Potter
God yes! Expelliarmus that spleen!
When the pandemic started, my brother texted me "Let's go to the Winchester and wait for all this to blow over" hahaha. And his mom is also Harriet Jones, Prime Minister (Doctor Who). You need to watch Hot Fuzz if you haven't seen it yet.
Omg that is hilarious about your brother hahaha. Genius. I cannot WAIT to watch Hot Fuzz, actually. From the trailer, I suspect I may even like it better. I really appreciate your comment, @Toukie!
‘Darker than Liz’s roots’ 🤣😭😂 I spat out my beans on toast, thank you for that. I’ve seen this films like 50 times it’s an absolute classic in the UK. It’s called the cornetto trilogy just bc and some point in each film they have one, it’s an ice cream brand. I’m so glad you reacted to this 😂
Haha glad to be of service, Tom! It was so good!! I’ve since learned more about Hot Fuzz, and I’m really looking forward to it. What are your thoughts on that one?
@@DavidvsFilm sorry I didn’t see this, David. Hot Fuzz is actually my fave of the three but all are very funny. You should also watch Paul which has Simon Pegg and Nick Frost too just not part of the trilogy x
I haven't mentioned this before but that Intro Music is everything. Love it.
Thanks! Isn't it great? I love it- "Let Your Love Run Free" by Upstate
I randomly just listened to the adverb schoolhouse rock song this morning, and you have the tshirt on!!
Cornetto is an ice cream- a damn good one!
I found out! And do you know how much it makes me want some when I realize I can't find it here? Even more of a reason to get on a plane.. lol
@@DavidvsFilm 🕺💃!! You see! We have a LOT of good stuff over here!
i love the Cornetto trilogy! i've seen all of these movies dozens of times. they're all so chock full of jokes and easter eggs, that you'll still be finding more after like 10 watches... especially with the second one, Hot Fuzz. if you decide to react to that one, i'm sure the comment section for that video is gonna blow your mind with all the little things you may have missed.
Best line in the movie… “SOMEBODY KILL THE QUEEN!” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
And a Cornetto is a Drum Stick Ice Cream Cone here in America.
Yes!!! I loved that too. "What??" "The music!"
@@DavidvsFilm yes. When Queen starts playing, he yells “Somebody kill the Queen” because it’s drawing more zombie’s attention. If you didn’t see that, I wonder if there is a UK version and a U.S. version. Like there are two different endings to 1408.
Wooohooo, I love love love the cornetto trio! I can't wait to get done work to watch this reaction 😄🥰
This movie kills me! Ha! Get it?? I am not generally a huge horror fan and I know this is not considered true horror but it is a movie I feel like could show people one, and interesting fun and new take on horror and two, shows people just how the world can swallow you up in mundane repetitiveness and how we can all be zombie esque from time to time. Really I think all of us struggle with the day in day out nature of life but if we can motivate ourselves to find the things to spice life up along the way then we will be all the happier for it! Great reaction keep it up!
Yes yes yes to alllll of this in your comment, @BryMcGuy! Couldn't agree more. (And your opening pun was well-received lol)
David, your reactions are awesome brother! Keep up the great work
Thank you, Thomas!! I really appreciate that :) Watching movies and sharing thoughts with people smarter than me is my dream come true!
Did you catch that when they are hitting the owner of the Winchester the beats of the music synchronized with the hits of the actors? They had ear-pieces where they listen to the song so the hits landed on time with the beats.
Hey buddy!!!!! Yes I did actually! so good. but I did NOT know that about the earpieces- that's hilarious. Perfect timing indeed.
I swear the UA-cam gods keep hiding your uploads from me! I love the cornetto trilogy. Hot Fuzz is my favorite out of the 3 but Shaun of the Dead is a close close runner up!
Right?? I think they do for sure!! And yes, I cannot WAIT to watch Hot Fuzz! Once I get past all the seasonal movies, and into the Winter abyss of no themes, I plan to work it in. ;)
I loved the "Death Becomes Her" reference! One of my favorite movies ❤
I LOVE that movie. To this day, when I’m in a meeting or icebreaker event and someone says, “Who wants to go first?”, the sh*t stirrer in me wants to say, “I would like to talk about….. Madeline Ashton..” AAGGGHHHHHHHH
@David vs. Film If you ever do that, you are bound by the covenant of your UA-cam followers to record that and their reactions. 😈
@@mysam4504 Hahaha understood.
@David vs. Film If anyone reacted to that statement, at least you know you will have found your people.
I am about to watch your reaction to this wonderful craziness that I love so dearly! I know you will just add to the madness so I can't wait to bust out laughing!
Hey!!! What's up my brother- long time no talk :) Good to see you again
so happy you enjoyed this
Thanks, Sam! Yeah, it was great. Bring on Hot Fuzz now.
@@DavidvsFilm yaasssss
loved this reaction!!!😘
Thank you, Chelsea! :)
When it was originally released, my English lit teacher described it as a “ZomRomCom”
So a... ZomCom? (I'll see myself out)
One of my most favourite movies ever.. the Cornetto trilogy is hilarious and the 3 movies are very different but with the same amazing humour. Instant classics
Thanks! Can't wait. If only I could get ACTUAL Cornetto here in the States....
@@DavidvsFilm they are the best.. we have them here in Australia, we also have drumsticks which are very similar.. do you have them?
Absolutely love your work..
Ed did live his last day didn't he!
No...you were right the first time...it was a rifle. The pub was named The Winchester, after the Winchester rifle. Of course, Winchester also made shotguns, but they are not world famous for their level action shotgun they way they are world famous for the lever action rifles. Also, based on what appears to be a hexagonal barrel on the particular rifle in the film, the gun seems to be a model 1894 Winchester rifle.✌✌💯💯
Ahhh, thank you, @iKvetch! Have you seen the Winchester House? That's one place I've always wanted to visit.
@@DavidvsFilm No...I have not, though I vividly remember visiting Hearst Castle when I was a kid...gave me the creeps. LOL
I see red on you!LoL So glad you're reacting to this movie!Much love💚
Hey hey mi amiga! Hahaha right?? So good.
if you like the cornetto (ice cream ) trilogy I recumbent "Paul" as well if you havent seen it :)
Yeah thank you, @vez hopkins! I remember when that movie came out, and it looked stupid to me. Now I realize it was me that was stupid lol. I bet I would enjoy it
You really grabbed the essence of the movie well. From the three Cornetto Movies it's in my opinion the second best for me , but Meta-vise it is the best. I like "Hot Fuzz" better comedy-wise , but it is not as depp as this one.
Thank you, Katharina! Definitely looking forward to Hot Fuzz.
This movie is great
Wow I didnt recognize him on Spy 🤦🏿♀️😂
Oh yeah? Haha, very different character. I love Spy though.
The MUSIC is such a huge part of the film, excellent musical choices! Is this movie scary?, meh idk maybe because I've seen it so many times but bloody yes!!!
Ditto on the music, and scary-wise, no, not in my opinion. With regards to the gore, I've never been affected much by that anyway, but even if I were, Walking Dead desensitized me a long time ago lol
I think you'd enjoy 28 Days Later. Another funny zombie flick is FIDO. Think Leave It To Beaver meets Zombies.
Oooh I haven’t heard of FIDO. I’ll look it up. Is 28 Days Later Horror or Horror Comedy? I remember when it first came out, I thought it was the sequel to the Sandra Bullock rehab comedy 28 Days lol
@@DavidvsFilm Horror. Nothing to do with Sandra Bullock. Definitely Horror/Thriller. It is different from most Z-flicks with an engaging story. FIDO I'd call comedy and Zombieland I'd call Horror/Comedy.
"Ozzy Osbourne of the UK"
Ozzy Osbourne is the Ozzy Osbourne of the UK as he's English! lol
What the hell is wrong with me?? I wasn’t even thinking. See how California takes celebrities from other places and convinces us that they’re Californians? Egg on my face lol.
@@DavidvsFilm I'll let you off this time as it can be quite hard to understand Ozzy Osbourne if you're not from these shores due to the way he speaks/his accent!
(it's a Birmingham in England accent btw - combined with the many years of recreational substances and alcohol! lol)
(I had to re-word this comment for UA-cam to allow it?!)
@@The-Underbaker Haha really?? They tried to censor it? You should have just written it in “Ozzy speak” lol
@@DavidvsFilm For some reason it wouldn't post when trying to use the "D" word that sounds like "Dugs", so I swapped it with "recreational substances". Very strange...
If I had attempted to word it the way Ozzy would have said it then you'd likely have had no chance of understanding what I was trying to say though!
A lot of Americans don't seem to realise that Hugh Laurie (from the TV show "House") is actually English too, sorry if i've just burst your bubble.
Hahahaha, oh no, I know about Hugh Laurie, and I promise I’m not as dense as could rightfully be assumed from this oversight. The best “American accent” actors- Rose Leslie, Rosamund Pike, Toni Collette, Andrew Lincoln- I’m aware are all not native Americans. So for me to make this errant comment- when Ozzie has one of the THICKEST BRITISH ACCENTS EVER- is like thinking Keith Richards is from Detroit. lol
If you loved this, you’ve gotta watch “Paul”. It’s the two of them but it’s not in the Cornetto Trilogy. It’s better!
Omg, omg David, I have so much to say, I'll try to keep it short. I used to like Shaun the most out of the Cornetto trilogy but now I'm a fan of Hot Fuzz. It's really clever. I showed it to my close ones, who aren't really into that kind of movie, and they loved it. I'm an English major, namely English humour, so those guys are right up my alley.
I watched Shaun back in college for the first time, and I remember laughing hysterically at the climax. Simon Pegg has this sincere quality to him, and I enjoy watching him anywhere. Hector and the Search for Happiness is another movie I can recommend, maybe not for the channel, but it hit me in the feels. Also, Pegg and Frost had a tv show recently, Truth Seekers, only one season, unfortunately.
And Peter Serafinowicz is another love, and his voice is.. well, it's 18+ 😁 you probably saw and heard him more than you realise. For instance, in Sing he played the gorilla's dad. I love his show, Look Around You it's a parody of scientific programs, and really funny.
Hi friend! Did you change your UA-cam profile pic? Looks great! And lol @ "18+" hahaha
Ok so I watched the trailer for Hot Fuzz because I didn't know what it was about, and I was afraid it was going to look bad, or at least not as good as Shaun, but holy crap- I cannot wait. It looks awesome! the English humor is the best. Even something as simple as the way Yvonne kept saying, "Shauuuuun!" just gets me.
@@DavidvsFilm I did change my pic, thanks for noticing! Appreciate it 🥰 It's my serious 'conference look' 😁
Hot Fuzz has a great atmosphere, cool twists, snarky commentary on film tropes, and lots of familiar faces, too, even Oscar winners 🤫. I'm sure you'll like it. Sending hugs!
A long-time favorite. I've never decided whether I like this or Hot Fuzz more. The Hot Fuzz reaction will sizzle, I'm sure. I see another commenter recommended Paul. I second that. It's not quite on par with the Edgar Wright trilogy but we do get that wonderful chemistry between Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, this time in the US.
I love to hear this! Yeah, I'm actually really excited about Hot Fuzz. Watched the trailer, and it looks like my kind of movie! I need to rewatch the trailer for Paul :)
The oblivious opening is done so well and the best part. The timing is so on point throighout the movie. Hope you get to the other 2 of the trilogy soon, as well as the rest of Peggs movies. Everyone has an Ed that sometimes they wonder why they're even friends with them. Pegg can do no wrong, he's the best part of the Mission Impossibles. Burke and Hare is a fun one too.
I am loving everything about your comment. Cannot wait for Hot Fuzz, and I gotta figure out how to work it in. We're about to start Hunger Games to get Marc in the rotation, and I want to catch Train to Busan, but I bet I can squeeze in at least Hot Fuzz before we get too balls deep in Halloween season. And you are 100% right about everyone having an Ed hahahaha. So true.
@@DavidvsFilm sounds like you have some binging to do. The Spirit of Halloween stores are almost setup so you know Halloween is right around the corner.
After this movie for almost 2 decades my brother and me say I'm sorry 🤪🤪😂

Another good movie is Tucker and Dale vs Evil
That has been on my list to watch since last year!! I am determined to get to it in the next few months. Don't let me forget! (I also want to watch Hot Fuzz too)
I just know that one day, if I wish real hard and eat all my vegetables you'll react to a movie I like again. 🥺🙏🏼
Awww Antoinette!!! Trust me- I have a favorite reactor of my own who posts a bunch of movies I either don't like or haven't seen. I'm sure I have plans to watch something that you will enjoy- which ones do you like??
@@DavidvsFilm I like most movies. You've just hit a streak of ones I don't like. Maybe something more highbrow with attractive men in it instead of whatever Simon Pegg is. 🤭You could finish the John Wicks or do some Tarantino if you haven't seen them. I'm sure you'll get to something decent soon. I don't have a real grasp of your tastes yet to try to recommend accurately for you. I like recommending ROPE (1948) but no one ever does it. It's probably too old.
@Antoinette Lopes Ahhh hahaha the shade at Simon Pegg! But I get you. I do have plans to continue with John Wick and more of the Rocky series. I have seen most Tarantino, but Inglorious Basterds is one of his that I have not seen and want to watch. I'm about to start Hunger Games with Marc as far as the big franchises go, and I don't know if you like that one or not. So hang in there and let me know ideas of others as you think of them so I can gauge YOUR tastes also.
And BY THE WAY, you will never believe this, but I actually HAVE seen Rope! It's been years ago, but at one point I went through a Hitchcock phase and watched a lot of his classics- Birds, Psycho, Vertigo, North By Northwest, Rear Window, and Rope :)
Well everyone else already told ya all the good stuff so I'll throw a challenge at you instead. In Hot Fuzz there is a very prominent cameo, but the person is difficult to detect. (Actually there are 2 but 1 is impossible) Let's see if you can detect the person.
You KNOW I love a challenge!! ACCEPTED. Ok so I'm looking for 2 cameos, 1 impossible.. I'll keep it in the back of my mind as I watch..
Not a suggestion, but if you enjoy Pegg, "Run Fatboy Run" is a good watch.
I do love him yes, so thank you for the recommendation! I didn't realize he was in the Mission Impossible movies until someone else pointed it out. I've only seen the first Mission Impossible from like 96 I think it was.
Uh, I think ozzy osbourne is the ozzy osbourne of the uk. He’s from the uk. Lmao
haha this was BY FAR the stupidest thing I have said on any video since I started the channel. I just wasn't even thinking of the words coming out of my mouth. Someone else pointed it out (also nicely, like you did 😁), and I suddenly felt like Kim Kardashian trying to do math.

@@DavidvsFilm Done and done
Imo the first 45 minutes of ''Shaun of the Dead'' is a comedy masterpiece, until they arrive at the ''Winchester'' pub, it felt like they (Edgar Wright & Simon Pegg) run out of ideas, to wrap the story up, still funny tho. ''Hot Fuzz'' (the 2nd in the Cornetto trilogy. Cornetto is actually an ice cream cone, a brand manufactured and owned by an Anglo-Dutch company, btw cornetto means ''Little Horn'' in Italian) is a riot! It's an homage to those American Buddy Cop movies and British horror flicks, and it is very funny and also pretty gory, if not so, more than ''Shaun''. The 3rd one didn't impressed me that much, but then again, only saw once.
Hey buddy!!! Yeah, I watched the trailer for Hot Fuzz, and I can predict that I'll probably like it even more than Shaun. I love those kind of movies to begin with, but when you work in Olivia Colman as well, I'm sold.
@@DavidvsFilm Olivia Colman is one of my favorite actresses of the last 20 years (my no.1 favorite is Toni Collette). Another actor in ''Hot Fuzz'' (who's also one of my favorite actors of the last 20 years) is Paddy Considine, who made his very impressive directing debut ''Tyrannosaur'' (2011), which also stars Olivia Colman (plus Peter Mullan and Eddie Marsan, both incredible actors).
Ozzy Osbourne of the UK??? Ozzy is bloody English 🤣🤣🤣
