    I've seen so many reactions to this by now, and what strikes me about them is how often people are unclear about Sue and Tommy. Sue genuinely regrets bullying Carrie and she and Tommy are acting in good faith. They don't know about the pig's blood plot until Sue notices the rope. Is it a flaw in the movie that this isn't clear? I can't decide. Also, the director Brian De Palma is known for paying homage to classic movies and their directors (especially Hitchcock) in his movies, so, yeah, the Psycho references are definitely intentional. Also also, sorry Marc if this gives you nightmares.

      Ok so you know me, Detective LaToya looking sh*t up after the fact.. I looked it up and discovered what you are saying about Sue/Tommy, and YES, I think it is a flaw in an otherwise STELLAR movie. In my humble opinion, all that was needed was an expansion on the scene under the bleachers with Sue /Tommy where Sue makes it explicitly clear that she regrets bullying Carrie, and that in this case, she doesn’t agree with her friends. I think that would have made it way clearer for the casual viewer. And honestly, that scene felt abruptly ended as it was- hard cutting away to Chris and Billy in the car. Makes me wonder if they really did originally film the scene that way, more explanatory, but then De Palma decided to cut it and not to make it so obvious. ??

      It's true; it's an often-misunderstood plot point and I guess De Palma needed to do something a little extra to make it clearer! It's VERY common for reactors to make that assumption! Not everyone, but definitely many reactors - perhaps more than half! - think Tommy and Sue are in on it. I saw it for the first time so long ago, maybe I had the same problem and just forgot, I'm not sure! But definitely Tommy and Sue were on Team Carrie. :)

      As someone who was a child of the 70s and had no problem knowing that Sue and Tommy were sincere (neither did anyone else I knew then), I put it more down to the fact that that was a more innocent time, and people were more likely to believe what Sue said about wanting to help. People are definitely more suspicious and cynical now; in fact, I would go so far as to say that people actually EXPECT other people to be cruel over caring. It makes me incredibly sad about people having to be so gun-shy about trusting others these days. Very sad, indeed. Such a great, classic movie based on an incredible book. (Thank King's wife for saving it from the trash, as King didn't realize how good it was or how it would wind up truly launching his career.) :)

    • @robertyeah2259
      @robertyeah2259 2 роки тому +14

      I would argue that even if it is a flaw, that it doesnt damage the movie overall. It puts the audience in Carrie's shoes because we also aren't sure if Tommy and Sue are nice or are planning something. The longer Carrie and Tommy have a nice date, you start to believe that at least Tommy doesn't know about the prank. When Sue shows up and smiles at Carrie winning prom queen but then loses her smile when she sees the rope, I think it can function as the moment the audience is supposed to finally know for sure who is on whose side in this story.
      Being distrustful of every character helps us understand Carrie better imo, even if it was unintentional.

  • @LuisM1416

    Stephen King at his best. Can't believe he almost threw the first few pages of the book away until his wife took it out of the trash. Carrie was the first Stephen King novel to be published and the first to be adapted into a feature film. We wouldn't have this awesome book and the film based on it without him and his wife. Its why he dedicated his first book to his wife. Awesome reaction. Also did you notice the end scene in Sue nightmare dream where the car is going backwards the shot was filmed backwards - then run in reverse in slo-mo - to give it a surreal effect.

    Between that and “sportsketball” this may be my favorite reaction ever to this flick. You guys have a great balance of funny/insightful, regardless of the Tommy/Sue confusion.

    I too have been interested at how many reactors think Sue and Tommy are in on the plot. But my reaction to that comes from the fact that I had already read the book when the film came out, so I knew they were innocent. A big proportion of the audience knew because that book was HUGE. It was King's first published novel, and it hit like dynamite. There was a lot of anticipation for the film, and it didn't disappoint. But I think that influenced de Palma's direction, the fact that so much of the audience already knew the story. I think there could have been a bit more elaboration of Sue and Tommy's innocence. (Or maybe the ambiguity was intentional. de Palma does have a rather impish sense of humor.)
    In the book, Carrie's situation was also elaborated. King tells you about her and her history - that awful treatment had been going on since her first day at school when she knelt down at lunch to pray, and it had never stopped. King said Carrie came from a couple of girls in his home town, and that every school had someone like her. I don't know how much reading you do, but that novel is really worth a read. It's a lot more thoughtful, deeper, and sadder than the film, which has De Palma's signature bright, colorful look. It also has a different ending (no, she still dies), one I like much more but which would be difficult to bring onscreen. Do check it out if you're in the mood for a suspenseful read. :)

      Hi @Serai3!! Good to see you again :) And thanks for your insight on this. Yeah, in reviewing the movie again (and maybe this is just me as an amateur editor now lol), the scene where Sue is talking with Tommy under the bleachers felt very abruptly ended. It seems to me as though there was more to the conversation before it just suddenly hard breaks to Chris and Billy. I do feel there was originally more there, but De Palma omitted it to add to uncertainty.

    The character of Carrie is the amalgamation of two girls who lived in the same town Stephen King grew up in. One was awkward and poor and was picked on all the time and the other had a hyper religious upbringing and was also unpopular. He was also a high school teacher before his writing career took off. He wondered what would happen if the girl who was always picked on developed psychic powers. Sorry if you were traumatized Marc! This is one of my favorite Stephen King books and movies.

    I think you make a good point about the death of Miss Collins. I believe it's less a reflection of a loss of Carrie's control and more a stark example of her break with reality. She thought everyone had been laughing, including Miss Collins. Killing her was not an accident.

    If you’re doing a Stephen King September, please consider reacting to Dolores Claiborne. There are so few reactions and it’s SOOO good. The acting is just perfection.
    It’s still hard for me to watch the opening of Carrie. What those girls did was absolutely monstrous. You have to remember Carrie thought she was dying because her insane mother had never explained menstruation to her. Honestly, most of us worry we are dying the first few times even if we know about it. It’s scary under the best circumstances and here this poor girl knew NOTHING about it. And in that state of raw terror, she is mocked and driven into a corner.
    Sue really was trying to atone and Tommy was just trying to do what his girl wanted. They weren’t being hurtful.
    There’s a lot of debate about whether everyone really was laughing at the prom or if Carrie snapped. I always thought they really were laughing, maybe some hysterically or out of shock. You know how it is when you’re in a WTF moment and someone starts laughing. It catches.
    Great reaction! Looking forward to more SK this month!

      Thanks so much!! I've seen (and LOVE D.C.), but Marc hasn't, so great recommendation for the future. Yeah, I can't even imagine how horrifying that would be if I didn't know what was happening, especially the first time like that. I went after the fact and read about Sue and Tommy, and we had no idea. It wasn't clear to us at least, but it made me feel better knowing it once I found out. Some redemption of poor Sue and MopTop at least :)
      Marc and I were talking about the laughing after the movie, and we think that it's in her head. At least some of it. And the only context clue I'm basing this on is how it showed the kaleidoscope camera angle. I think some people were legit laughing, but in her mind she saw them ALL of them laughing (including Miss Collins, who I don't think would have been) because she was overwhelmed.

    For anyone who couldn't see Sue/Tommy's abject innocence from the start - consider this for all future movies; people conspiring to do a thing aren't trying to fool each other. They're both in on the plot, and would talk openly about the plot with each other, in private. Imagine Ocean's Eleven (original, of course), if they never discussed the heist. We'd be watching a movie with some guys wandering around, trying to figure what they were at the casino for, did they know each other, was it a coincidence they all seemed to be trying to steal money, etc. Maybe Marc should have 2 Bloody Marys when he watches this kind of film. 😁 For an old scare, check out Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte.

I haven’t seen the remake, so I probably shouldn’t compare, but in my opinion Sissy Spacek is just that perfect blend of plain but beautiful. She can simultaneously make the bullying seem plausible, but then also be the most beautiful girl at the prom. This movie was just ultimately devastating, mostly because Carrie was such an innocent soul. Even when doing terrible things at the end, she seemed to be as inexperienced with her powers as she was with her period in the opening scene.

    Ok, so loved your reaction, but I have to take issue with one observation. You say, movies were different in the 70s and 80s with nudity, especially in horror movies, you had to include that T & A. You are confusing teen slasher movies from the 80s, that were often saturated with clumsy sex and nudity, with real psychological horror films from the 70s which is a completely different animal. The nudity at the beginning of Carrie is not meant to titillate or arouse, I mean I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it but it wasn't there for your enjoyment! It was meant as an establishing shot of the girls in PE locker room horseplaying, enjoying their nudity, easy camaraderie and silliness, and Carrie alone, withdrawn, ostracized, still showering just to enjoy the quiet from shrieking bullies.

    • @DavidvsFilm
      @DavidvsFilm  2 роки тому +2

      Hey Delius! Appreciate your comment and for explaining this way. Great point- I probably was unfairly conflating the nudity from 80s slashers and 70s horror.

    the fact that Carrie is abused in such horrible ways by everyone from the bullies at the school to her mother to a freaking random kid on a bike makes you realize how cruel people actually can be to others. its a tragic story that shows how repulsive entitled people can be (Chris's unprovoked hatred), how disturbing someone can be when they take their beliefs too far (no offence intended), and how seemingly "innocent pranks" can have unimaginable consequences. even though this isn't a "fun" movie, it's my favorite from Stephen King because of the truths it rings and the warnings it gives.

    Fellas. Remember this was in 1976. I grew up in the 70’s. There was a lot of women being slapped in movies. Men were aggressive and severely sexual with female in these 70’s flicks. Close to disturbing.
    Now horror movies of the 70’s and 80’s were graphically violent using practical effects.
    Sexual subject matter and gruesome violence were the two main ingredients for horror movies back then.
    The Amityville Horror (1979) The Exorcist (1973) and Carrie (1976) all gave me nightmares for weeks.
    If you fellas plan to react to The Exorcist for Spooky Season fair warning. This film is NOT FOR THE FAINT at HEART. In other words the movie will mess you up in the head.
    Just letting you know. But I would stay away from THAT MOVIE!

    1. Stephen King threw this book away, but his wife took it out and told him to send it in. It's the first one that sold to a legitimate publisher that wasn't adult pulp and the first to be adapted into a movie.
    2. Back then teachers were allowed to strike a student if warranted.
    3. Another religious nut bag can be found in King's "The Mist".
    4. Norma/PJ Soles 😍 Al long as I have a face....😋 (she has to ace that ballcap)
    5. Sue, Tommy and Miss Collins really were trying to help Carrie. I read the book.
    6. The bully teacher Mr. Fromm/Sydney Lassic Played Chezwick in "One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest".
    7. If Billy's a high school student, so am I.
    8. Margaret's crucifixion pose is the same as the St. Sabastian.
    9. Both Sissy and Piper Laurie were nominated for Oscars but Horror never gets tha love so they lost.

      Thanks, yeah I totally agree. Shawshank Redemption too. I've seen them both, but he hasn't and I think he would like them. This year we're gonna do (obvs Carrie), The Shining (watching tonight), The Mist, then IT Chapter Two. But I envision doing Stephen King September for the next several years to come- if God willing my Little Engine that Could channel makes it!- because there are many other movies (Stand By Me included) that I want to see. :)

    Tommy and Sue were not part of the set up. They were unaware of the plan, which is why Sue was alarmed when she found the cord leading to the bucket.
    Come on guys it's not that difficult.

    • @DavidvsFilm
      @DavidvsFilm  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, BUT keep in mind we're watching this for the first time, and we don't know where it's headed. In my opinion, De Palma does not make it very clear that they are NOT in on it, especially in the context of lumping them in with the other girls/guys (their friends) who are facilitating it. Nothing pointed to them being genuine until the very end, which is exactly when we started questioning it.
