We didn't have PG13 in the 70's. We didn't have PG13 until after Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom and Gremlins came out. Those 2 movies were the reason they created the PG13 rating. The first PG13 movie was Red Dawn in 1984 starring Patrick Swayze.
Jaws was the first Summer Blockbuster. It was also responsible fir a large part of my generation not going in the ocean. I still won't and I was 14 when this came out.
The barrels are supposed to keep the shark from submerging very deep so it's closer to the surface for tracking. Also the story Quint told about the USS Indianapolis is a true story.

What a lot of people forget was that PG wasn't meant to be a family friendly rating back then.Yes,all ages could go,but with the suggestion that parents should decide if their kids could handle it.Even so,with Jaws, the producers put the extra warning "May be too intense for younger children" on all posters and TV ads.

One of the reasons we don't see much of the shark was that they had like a zillions things that went wrong with the shark prop... (basically, it kept breaking down)... In the end, it turned to their advantage as the viewers imagination is much more powerful than any special effect. Just seeing that floating dock, or those yellow barrels was enough. John Williams' genius score also helped greatly...

    • @lyndoncmp5751
      @lyndoncmp5751 Рік тому +1

Actually the unseen shark was planned for the first half of the film. The mechanic shark was never scheduled to be used until the Orca based scenes. That's where it kept breaking down. The shark not being seen in the first half was by design.

The shark slamming into Hooper's cage made me jump in the theater, too, although for a different reason. I had read Peter Benchley's novel, so I knew the shark was going to attack and had steeled myself for that scene. But when the shark rammed the cage, a lady in the seat next to mine screamed and leapt ino her boyfriend's lap. She scared me more than the shark.

This is my favorite movie all time. Everything is spot on perfect. I saw it 5 times during the Summer of ‘75, and it scared the hell out of every audience that saw it. It got not one, but TWO standing ovations at the end of the movie. It rocketed to the #1 spot as the all-time movie money-maker in just 60 days (unadjusted for inflation). Adjusted for inflation, it remains the #7 all-time movie blockbuster - and that’s WITHOUT the benefit of numerous re-releases that all of the other movies on that inflation-adjusted Top Ten List have. It was an atmospheric experience with a full house, alternating horror and some pretty funny laughs. You felt like you were on an adventurous journey of discovery with the 3 main characters in the boat, one of awe, and gruesome horror. John Williams’ unforgettable music score gave the shark a persona of gigantic, unstoppable, oncoming death. And it all worked so well because the script played out lik e real life. What a movie this was when it was released - a true phenomenon. The summer of ‘75 is so special to me: I was 15 and I saw “Jaws” AND I read “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. Wow - it’ll always remain my favorite summer!

When this movie came out in 1975, our family was at the beach in Delaware, and we went to see JAWS at the theater, and then back to the beach the next day. I went in the water... and got stung by a jellyfish. Not as traumatic as a shark attack, but it still hurt. I believe this was Steven Spielberg's third film, after "Sugarland Express" and "Duel", which was one of the best made-for-TV movies you will ever see. That's a recommendation for "Duel". "Jaws" was the film that got his career kicked into high gear.

Fun fact: You were supposed to see more of the shark but the animatronic almost was always not working, and they couldn't afford to make another one or fix it constantly (I believe they already went over budget). They used the theme to cause suspense and used the shark as sparingly as they could. It was very well received and thought to be even better than if the shark was shown more.

There were men on either side of her pulling ropes tied around her and she broke a rib. Screams were for real. The USS Indianapolis was real. The barrels are full of air. If they can tire it out they’re hoping to drown it. Sharks have to move to stay alive. I didn’t swim in the ocean for years after this. I can swim in the ocean now but I don’t go beyond the waves. It was kept in the movie because it really exemplified his characters paranoia of the sea. JAWS wasn't Spielberg's first movie, but was the first Summer blockbuster & benefited much from its animatronic shark not working so Spielberg had to get creative with ways to stimulate the viewer's imagination. Also, Dreyfuss was already a star but thought his last movie had been so bad he ought to take anything that came along, including a shark movie. He & Shaw (Quint) loathed each other. There are lots of interesting behind the scenes stories about the movie. It's a true classic.

If I remember right, you're actually better off swinging for the eyes of a shark over the nose. Since, not only does hitting the nose not really faze them, but there's an alarmingly high chance your hand would just slide down toward the teeth when you hit the nose. Even that might not do much though, since, it's a shark. If it's attacking you, it's because it attacks animals your size...animals that could *also* kick the shit out of a human and are much better suited to the water.
But yes, you're right, sharks can't swim backwards--or at least not anything we'd describe as "swimming." Basically they can manage just enough to let them wiggle their way out if they get their head stuck someplace and not much else.

You know I say the "Wassup?" with you now, right?
I live in Massachusetts right above Martha's Vineyard so it's basically the same waters but poor people live here. I feel like this movie is why I don't know how to swim. We went to the beach but just looked at the water. lol I was born in '73 so this movie was new when I was little. I can never tell how old you are David is because the references say Gen X but then other things make me think younger. I'll assume you got Marc when he was jailbait. 😇 Or he actually is a vampire. PG was different back then since there was no PG-13. So PG movies had boobs and light curse words. I don't think violence was considered bad yet. Unless it was super violent then it got an X, which became NC-17 later. They didn't show the shark that much because it kept breaking down.
If you guys like shark tracking movies, you should watch THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU if you haven't. It's Wes Anderson's best in my opinion. It's not scary. It's quirky but surprisingly heartfelt.

the "We're gonna need a bigger boat.." line by Roy Schieder was an adlibbed line. Years later in the 90's he played the captain of the widely popular TV series SeaQuest: DSV, where he kept quipping during the first season, "The boat's too big!"

And Peter benchley as well as one of the writers of the script, the gentleman who played the news reporter meadows, actually stated in an interview in 2005 that Roy scheider said that that line was in fact in the script and was not ad-libbed and he definitely had lived a lot he said but that was not one of the lines that Roy came up with. And the writer was embarrassed that he had been telling it wrong for decades

Oh this is PG alright, back when PG MEANT Parental Guidance NEEDED to watch the film. Now these days PG means PRACTICALLY G. The movie industries made PG-13 as a means to curve all the parents who complained about PG films being too scary. And THEN they kept complaing that PG13 was too raunchy, so they had to make a shit ton of new rules to complicate the rating system even further. And all of this ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS stems from parents who don't wanna do their job and manage their kids. It's gotten to the point where Parents DEMANDED DeadPool was re-edited to be PG13 because parents didn't wanna see the R rated film... so they did a year later as a joke and PUSHED that PG13 rating to the max limit.

My mother was 6 months pregnant with me when this came out so I didn't see Jaws until years later. Then Jaws 3 came out in 3-D in 1987. I was 7! We never made it through the opening credits. I started screaming when the grouper head's mouth kept opening and closing without the body. We had to leave the theater.
    Now on to Jaws facts:
    1. The Indianapolis story is true although a few of the facts are wrong, like the date mentioned. It has only been declassified a few years before the movie so it wasn't common knowledge. This movie brought it to the publics attention.
    2. The book explained why the mayor wanted to keep things open... The town owed money to the Mob.
    3. Cooper died in the book but they had such a cool video of the shark on top of the cage but with a person in it so they let him live.
    4. Lee Fierro who played Mrs. Kintner actually slapped Roy Scheider on several takes. For years people would come up to her asking her to slap them too.
    5. Several decades after the filming of Jaws, Lee Fierro walked into a seafood restaurant and noticed that the menu had an "Alex Kintner Sandwich". She commented that she had played his mother to the waitress. suddenly the owner of the restaurant ran out to meet her - none other than Jeffrey Voorhees, who had played her son. They hadn't seen each other since the original movie shoot.
6 Peter Benchley, who wrote the book, later regretted it because of all the sharks killed following the film. In his later year he worked with shark conservationist to stop the slaughter.
He was also one of the founding board members of the Bermuda Underwater Exploration Institute.
    7. The word "coroner" is misspelled not once, but twice in the form Chief Brody is filling out for the shark's first victim. This is my personal favorite besides the fact that "You're going to need a bigger boat." was an ablib.
Also Robert Shaw was drunk on set quite a bit which caused problems with Richard Dreyfuss.
If you get a chance watch the making of Jaws it's quite fascinating to see.

    • @DavidvsFilm
      @DavidvsFilm  2 роки тому +1

Haha thank you so much, Cynthia! I'd love to watch the making of. And I really appreciate all the facts you shared. I have a feeling I would have been the same way as you had I been in the theater lol

    1. Goof: Chrissie's body parts are too far up the beach to have been washed up there without a storm.
    2. Boy Scouts don't need to do the mile swim to get their Merit badge. It's an accomplishment all its own.
    3. Lee Fierro/Mrs. Kentner actually slapped Roy Scheider. It took 17 takes. Once was so hard it knocked his glasses off.
    4. The jump scare at Ben Gardner's boat was put in on purpose by Spielberg because they were having problems with the shark "Bruce" and his appearance was delayed, and the movie needed something earlier. It works every time😲
    5. IRL Dreyfuss and Shaw didn't get along so Spielberg used the animosity to fuel their feud onscreen.
    6. Hooper was right. The fish that hit the line was a game fish.
    7. "You're gonna need a bigger boat" is one of the greatest adlibs in history. It was the first time Roy actually saw Bruce.
    8. Goof: An animal that large couldn't hit the side of the boat as rapidly as it did UNDER WATER.
    9. All of the shipboard scenes were filmed entirely at sea.
    10. I suspect Quint's story about the Indy gave him PTSD flashbacks and contributed to his behavior after he told the story.
    11. I was in the Navy and we were instructed to go for the eyes when confronting a shark.
    12. The boy that says, "He made me do it." recently became the police chief of the town where this was filmed.
    13. In the book not only does Hooper die but he was also having an affair with Mrs. Brody.
    14. JAWS II is the only other one worth watching. It revolves around the Brody kids and their friends. Including the mayor's son.
    15. The third one was so bad that after Scheider read the script he turned it.
PS: Sharks cannot swim backwards, and they can't stop swimming forward or the water
    won't flow through their gills.
When I was in the Navy I was stationed on Oahu for 3 1/2 years and it was 3 years 5 months too long. Sorry guys

Jaws 2 was ok except for those irritating and annoying teenagers.
Jaws 3(D) was made, you've guessed it, in 3D. But the shark was super cheap-looking that even grade school kids could do better. And the storyline had absolutely nothing to do with Amity or the Brody family or the first two films. It was set in an aquarium for the public. The movie was kinda like how Halloween III took an exit from the whole Michael Myers thing and spun it off another way. It was so dumb.
Jaws 4 was set in the Caribbean, Bahamas or some place like that with the Brody family coming back and the kids all grown up. And the funny thing is [dumb, rather] is that the shark had some sort of psychic connection with the Chief's wife.
So I'd say only the first two were good. The rest were crap.

PG-13 wasn't a thing until Gremlins/Indiana Jones: Temple of Doom in the 80's. I think it was originally a 15 rated movie, but as ratings have lessened over the years it's now considered "PG".

Robert Shaw was an actor and playwright in real life. He was also a heavy drinker and was inebriated most of the time when he’s on screen. His drunken rants are legendary but sadly he was taken too soon and died around the age of 50. He left behind a wonderful legacy of films though. His “Indianapolis” speech in this film ranks as probably the best speech ever in a movie. That they didn’t give academy awards for best picture and director to JAWS is one of the worst gaffs ever by Hollywood. There has not been a better film made that year up to and including today. (For those who think 1975’s One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest was a better movie…go to your room and stay there.) good video!

The thing with the barrels has to do with a sharks ability to breath. Unlike some fish, sharks have to keep swimming in order to keep oxygen moving across its gills. By attaching a barrel (or two or three) to it, you make the shark have to work harder to keep swimming. Eventually, it because too exhausted to swim, stops, and drowns.

This was right before pg-13 and was one of the reasons for pg-13. The reason given for the pg and not R rating was the violence was considered inimitable in real life and so not deserving of an R rating. The reason for the secrecy around the Indianapolis was it was delivering the first atomic bombs and the Navy was paranoid about the Japanese discovering where they had been and maybe sabotaging the bombs before delivery. No one was supposed to know where they were going or where they had been .

I saw Jaws in the theater when I was 13 yo with my brothers. My oldest brother grabbed me when the man's one eye head popped out of the boat. I jumped out of my seat. Many of us said we would never go into the ocean afterwards.

Haha you can always count on older brothers, right? I can imagine this would be awesome in the theaters on the big screen and deafening sound. What I can’t imagine is what some people do now- go to water parties where they float in a pond or lake and watch this on an outdoor screen. No.

Don't watch the sequels. They get progressively worse, and 4 is on record as one of the dumbest films ever made.

The Indianapolis story really happened. It was declassified by the movie but nearly no one knew about it until Jaws.

less than a handful of humans are killed by sharks every year, thousands of thousands of sharks are killed by man but someday soon they will organize
