My wife's mom was a piano player for the church and never missed a service or an opportunity to tell us about how much God loved us. One night my wife comes home with this movie. We're watching it and during the "Post nut clarity" scene I'm laughing so hard I'm in tears and I ask her what made her rent this movie. She said her mom had recommended it. After that, I had a newfound respect for my mother-in-law's sense of humor.
Just knowing this lady found this movie funny made you bond because she wasn’t the stereotype you expected

I saw this in the theater in 1998, and the whole theater was cracking up during so many scenes. You just don’t see that in today’s comedies.
Yes! "Dumb and Dumber" was another one where you stomach and face hurt from laughing so much... 🤣

I’ll never forget seeing this in the theaters. The entire room erupted in laughter in the frank and beans scene, and the hotel bathroom scene.
I had to see the movie twice because everyone was laughing so long and hard we missed a lot that happened after.
Yeah.. that happened to me too.. You couldn't hear anything they were saying at dinner because so many people were dying of laughter.

I just love imagining Lee Evans reaction when receiving the script. He's a working class English man who's acting as an American that's pretending to be an upper class English man lmao
The actor who played Norm/Tucker is actually a quite-famous British stand-up comedian, Lee Evans, whose 2008 Big tour and 2011 Roadrunner tour broke attendance records, including multiple show dates at London's O2 and the Wembley Arena. Evans also had parts in other movies where Americans may have seen him: 2000's _The Ladies Man_ (Barney), 1997's _The Fifth Element_ (Security Officer Fog), and 1997's _Mouse Hunt_ (Lars Smuntz).
Lee Evans is English. 'British' is a nothing term which incorporates two other countries nothing to do with England.

@@rnw2739 Well, speaking as an English person myself, I have absolutely no problem with anyone referring to the English as British (which we most definitely are) or even European, if referring to some native Brits' ethnicity, which many of us also can be classified as. My advice, relax on the offence taking thing, you'll live longer. 🤣
@Reactions That's a shame, I personally do have a problem with it. This erasing of a national identity is very subtle but effective - try calling a Scot a Brit and see the reaction but somehow the English are expected to accept it for fear of being labelled petty or dramatic. I most certainly am NOT British. The problem is when you have English called Brits but Welsh or Scottish called Welsh or Scottish.... thats what's happening and it's a shame you have such little regard for your country that you are fine with its disappearance
As an American, I regret I am woefully ignorant of these distinctions, and I certainly meant no offense, nor do I wish to contribute to the erasing of anyone's national identity. I was simply using the construction in common use, and in fact that's how Mr Evans is described in the opening line of the Wikipedia article (no doubt written by one of his countrymen) that I used in writing my comment, to get the dates right for his very popular comedy tours.
I had always thought that the UK consisted of the countries linked together under its sovereignty and located geographically in the island of Britain (England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland), and that it was therefore proper to call the citizens of any of those countries 'British', just as someone may refer to me (geographically, not nationally) and my Canadian neighbor both as 'North Americans' (though it's not an exact analogy, since there is no overarching 'United Kingdom of North America'....).
So if there is now a preference for 'English' over 'British' for citizens of England, I am sorry, but I had not heard of it. I will try and be more precise and respectful in the future.

I saw this in a sold out crowd. By the time the hair gel scene happened we were all laughing so hard it probably looked like we all were in convulsions. I was falling into my neighbor and I didn't know them. 🤭
The guy playing guitar and singing the theme song is Jonathan Richman. He was the frontman for the band Modern Lovers from the mid 70s which also included Chris Frantz and Jerry Harrison who would be in The Talking Heads after.
That is the hardest I've seen Samantha laugh.... I LOVE this movie

I also love the Britsh actor who played Norm /Tucker. His American accent was so good that some people complained about his horrible 'fake' English accent.

In the bar, Norm explains that he had a friend break his back with a baseball bat so he could go to Mary. You guys were talking about whether Mary was an orthopedic surgeon and probably missed it.
This is one of my favorite comedies ever. I drive my coworker crazy by repeatedly asking, "Have you seen mah baseball?"
One of the most underrated comedies is Mystery Men starring Ben Stiller. It was made in 1999, pre Marvel / superhero era and the fact it precedes those and makes light of superhero tropes makes it even funnier.
The superhero tropes have existed in comic books for almost a century now, and there were plenty of kids cartoons, low budget TV shows, and B movies featuring superheroes, not to mention the 60s and 90s versions of Batman, and both George and Christopher Reeve’s turns as Superman.
Mystery Men is a must-see.
Watched this with my parents in 99' - when the zipper scene happened they laughed for a solid 10 minutes - till this day it is a great memory!
The guy that plays Warren is also the cameraman in the original Scream movie.
Such a well scripted movie. Love the dialogue.

This is my all time favorite comedy. I watched it in theaters when it came out, and let me tell you, I had, and still haven't head a theater erupt in as much laughter as when the hair gel scene happened. Fantastic film
Jonathan Richman is a legend! Apparently he was the one who suggested the ending change from Ben Stiller’s character being shot to him.
I'm a big fan of his and it was such a great surprise to see him that I said "Oh shit Jonathon Richman!" out loud in the theater 😂
I actually got into Richman’s music because of this movie.
LOVE the variety of films you guys watch on the channel, but my personal faves are when you're laughing and having a great time. Always a treat when a comedy classic pops up on your feed. Your 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' vid is still in my rewatch playlist lol.

That's not real love. I don't know what that is." For a raunchy crazy sex comedy that's a pretty deep, honest, and great line.

"Kingpin" is another great comedy from the Farrelly brothers from that period. Definitely worth a watch. It is my favorite of their movies.

Very funny movie. The musician that sings throughout the movie is the great Jonathan Richman. He started with his band Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers and then has continued on as a solo act. I've seen him live and he is a lot f fun.

Much of this movie you couldn't do today. The Farrelly Brothers were in their bag with this movie. Along with 'Me, Myself & Irene' with Jim Carrey and Renee Zellweger. 😂😆😆

That's Jonathan Richman as the singer. You might look him up as he's had a lengthy (and very influential) recording career (Jonathan Richman and the Modern Lovers). I've always seen his appearances (and his drummer) as acting as a Greek chorus for the story.
The angry cop does such a great job. He kills me everytime.
Kingpin and There's Something About Mary are two of the best comedies of the 1990s, and we have the Farrelly Brothers to thank for that!
Dumb and Dumber probably belongs there as well, but Kingpin is my favorite of their movies.
@@TheRedWaltz24 the problem with Dumb and Dumber for me is--using the particular scale I'm using in my head for this--I simply am not invested in Harry and Lloyd. I like them, don't get me wrong, but I don't really care about them. In Kingpin, There's Something about and Mary, Me, Myself & Irene, we get stories that had the signature off-the-wall comedy, but underneath were stories about people struggling with deeply personal pain and trauma in search of redemption.
Technically, I guess you can sort of say that about Dumb and Dumber, since Harry and Lloyd are two lonely, working class guys down on their luck, but since we never get to know them much, they end up just being who they are. Harry and Lloyd just exist apart from the world with very little, if any, change. I don't have the same urge to root for them like I do for Roy Munson, Vanessa, Ishmael, Ted, Mary, Charlie Baileygates, Hank, and Irene.
I love Dumb and Dumber, it is one of the Farrelly Brothers' signature classics. It's very much a prototype for their next films. But, even with the serious moments (which are well acted, timed, paced, etc.) it lacks that extra dimension the others did so well. Kingpin in particular, but the other two as well, could deliver the darkest, most gross-out or obnoxious series of jokes in one scene, give you a melancholic/contemplative scene immediately after, send you laughing hysterically after that, before bringing you to tears later on. It makes for not only an amazing comedy, but overall satisfying cinema. (Kingpin is my favorite of their, too).
Shallow Hal had this, too, but Shallow Hal is where the formula started to fall apart, but that is a post for another day.

I’ve always looked at the musicians functioning as a two-man Greek chorus.
Tucker is played by Lee Evans one the UK's best stand up comedians...on his 2008 tour he broke the world record for biggest audience of 10,108 people on one night and had an audience of 500,000 people over 59 dates...he retired in 2014 after the death of his manager

Don’t forget the amazing Magda! The actress that plays her, Lynn Shay, is the same actress that plays Elise in all of the Insidious films. She’s also a part of the Ouija series. She is amazingly talented! And trust me… the franks and beans HURTS!!!!! It’s a pain you will never forget. I speak from experience. 😧😬 We had no Doctors or hospitals where I grew up so, yeah, I had to fix it myself!

This is such a fun movie. The Farrely Brothers really are excellent with comedy. The 90s & 2000s films they did are awesome. Kingpin, Dumb & Dumber, Suck on You, Me, Myself & Irene, Shallow Hal. Lots of great movies.

If you really want to see Cameron Diaz show off her acting chops, PLEASE consider watching 'Being John Malkovich'. It's a Charlie Kaufmann (Eternal Sunshine, Synechdoche N.Y., Adaptation etc) film ....so, SUPER quirky.... but an amazing platform for the cast to show off their chops. You may find it an enjoyable watch. I guarantee you've never seen anything like it. 😁
BTW - I LOVE the idea of Jonathan (RoadRunner/PabloPicasso) Richmond musically stalking Mary!

How is this 25 years old already? Time is a MF'er. Fond memory of seeing this the summer it came out while on a day off from being a camp counselor up in Maine. Me and some mates found a theater that served booze. I had turned 21 only a couple months earlier. The joint was packed and the whole place was in hysterics for at least 10-12 gags. Not sure if I've ever been in a similar cinematic experience since, a crowd that large and that thoroughly united in laughter. It was to the point you start laughing at other people's laughing. I hope you guys get to Kingpin. For my money, the best of the Farrelly Bros movies.

38:18: me, too!!! I live on an island, and walk my dogs on the beach daily…and there are sometimes people fishing on the beach. So, I strive to stay clear, thanks to this film.
I lived down in Florida for 12 years or so about 2 miles away from the "aqua-golf" driving range. They have plaques and stuff up from the filming of the scenes they had there. Pretty neat.
You guys should really do a reaction to Harold and Maude it is a fantastic film with a wonderful soundtrack by Yusuf Islam AKA Cat Stevens.
You know it’s gonna be fun when the Schmitts are doing a comedy classic! And especially a comedy classic that also gives us valuable life lessons. Always be careful when zipping up, never piss off the hitchhiker and always stand at least 200 yards away from any anglers! Seeing this movie at a young age served you well, Daniel 😅

Another classic, love this movie.
Something About Mary is a comedy of historic significance. It was the first in a new phase of comedy films - super original when it came out, and changed comedy. A lot of films after it had a similar style but this one gets credit for opening up this kind of comedic style film.
Funny Fact: When the two ladies look out the window after the dog jumped out, the director's were mooning them and that's why they make that little scream.
One night at McCools...probably one of the best comedies after There's something about Mary..

This movie is even funnier on repeat viewings because you know ahead of time where each joke has its payoff. Things that you didn't know where they were going, you're now in on 3 minute setups. Such as "You flog the dolphin..." culminates with the hair gel in the restaurant. And now knowing Tucker is faking, you can laugh when he drops his keys.
Btw they mention the movie "Harold and Maude" it's a great movie you guys would love.
The singer in the movie is Jonathan Richman, kind of a beloved underground artist. Recommend his song Icecream Man.

@TBR Schmitt If you haven't already, I highly recommend you watching Meet The Parents. It's Ben Stiller playing the same type of character he plays in this movie, a sad clown in a nonstop comedic rom com with wild twists and turns from beginning to end.
The guy with the crutches listed off Ted bundy's crimes referring to the private investigator guy. That was the funniest part to me.
Was a blast watching the full reaction on Patreon! Can't wait until you dip into Wes Anderson's movies. As Bill Murray fans, they are a must see!
Don't remember the year, but about 10 years ago Stiller & Diaz were meant to be on the Graham Norton show together just before Christmas, but she was late so he had to end his segment and leave. He left a wrapped Xmas present for her, which was a bottle of hair gel 🤣🤣🤣
The actor that played Warren ( Mary's brother) in this movie is W. Earl Brown who played Kenny The Cameraman in Scream ( who got his throat slashed in the movie) and he played Rock legend/actor Meatloaf in the TV Biopic Meatloaf : To Hell and Back (2000)

My wife and I watched this film when we rented it at Blockbuster. Sitting on the sofa I literally fell to the floor during the frank and beans scene. My jaw hurt so badly from laughter.

Breakthrough movie IMO during the 90s. It pushed things to the next level which allowed many of those early 2000s films have easy access to pushing the limits. Great reaction guys!
I concur, every few years someone takes a chance and ‘elevates’ it. As comedies go, This for sure, then ‘Old School’ and ‘The Hangover’
I would say dumb and dumber started it.
The 90s were rich in movies that pushed boundaries in all genres. Even earlier than the ones you mention were movies like Clerks, and Austin Powers which pushed the limits of comedy, and Swingers, which set up the buddy comedy genre movies like Old School, which I love, American Pie, The Hangover, Hot Tub Time Machine, and others.

The context in this thread seemed to me to be sexual humor and Buddy Comedies of the 2000s, neither of which apply to Airplane.

When I first saw this in the theater, the "hair gel" scene made me fall out of my chair laughing! I almost peed in my pants I laughed so hard. It was one of the absolute funniest movies I have ever seen.
I recall seeing this movie while traveling overseas. I think I hadn't seen Chris Elliott since he did a short lived sitcom called _"Get a Life"_ that where he played an adult paperboy that lived with his parents. The intro playing the r.e.m. song, _"stand"_ while he tossed papers from his bike is still etched in my mind.
I think there were a number of scenes that weren't in the theatrical release, and when this came out on DVD, it was during the initial boom of DVDs and how a large amount of bonus content, like deleted scenes, bloopers, etc., could be included contrasted with vhs. I don't recall if the 13:28 scene demonstrating yet another reason how wookie "had it all" with his wife after Mary was included in the theatrical release I initially saw.
I was also fortunate to see this in the cinema. I love the Buttercup montage at the end credits, especially the park scene with some of the cast with pants around their ankles while singing. lol.
Heck yes, 90's and 2000's comedies pls, just roll right through them. Clerks, Clerks II, American Pie, Road Trip, Old School, Role Models, all the Judd Apatow movies.
