I just started spraying furniture and was wondering, do you just let your sprayer sit between coats? Does it get clogged? Does the paint inside dry? Not for sure what to do with the sprayer between coats.
Good question! Oh no that would be a crazy amount of cleanup! 😀Everything is sealed in the airtight cup, so the paint doesn’t dry out there or in the hoses. The only thing that sometimes happens is on the tip of the nozzle a dot of the paint when exposed to air (like glue would on a bottle tip) dries and needs to be wiped off or picked off (it’s like the size of a pin head).
OMG! I love the cardboard trick on the drawers. I never thought about that. Did you use your paint straight or did you thin it down? Also... what tip did you use?
@@gazsto9510 it’s hard to just say a percentage, even colors differ in consistency due to the pigments used to create them. I suggest using a viscosity cup and the sweet spot for run through would be 35-40 seconds.
Hi! I had about 1/3 of the jar left. For one dresser this size I always buy 1 pint but never use the whole thing! Great coverage with Fusion! Thank you so much! 😀
Your video is really helpful. I have been using FMP for about a year now and really like it. However have recently tried spraying with varying results. Do you have any info about temperature affecting spraying? I am spraying outdoors in Louisiana.
Thank you so much! Yes temps whether your spraying or brushing can have affect on how your end result comes out. Most paint companies say optimal temps is 65-75 degrees. Being that most of us work in workshops that can be hard to control and have the optimal temps. I have heaters in my shop and I wouldn't spray below 50 or above 90 degrees without having heating or cooling units to help with the temps.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thanks for your help. I've had to sand down and repaint a dining table top because of learning curve. Got first coat on beautifully. Second coat I tried to apply the following morning (have to spray outside) and temps had dropped overnight into 50s. I couldn't spray anything without creating puddles and hoped this was the reason. Love your tutorials.
Helppppp 😫 I sprayed Fusion last night. I’m a newbie. I definitely should have sanded between coats. I did 3 layers. It feels fine grain sandpaper and is a bit blotchy even though I did the overlapping technique. What should I do? I have the sanding pad. Should I do it dry or wet? And would I need to do a new coat afterwards? Any advice appreciated 😊
I would say feeling and looking are going to be different things the way you attack it - if it feels grainy or chalky sanding will definitely help the feel. If you are looking blotchy or uneven that is more about your spray technique and the way the product laid down - sanding won't really change that appearance. You should be overlapping by about 25-50% - I like to go 50% to avoid striping. I don't wet sand (just a preference), spraying takes time to get down - so I would say practice. You can sand your current coat and do another coat overlapping by 50% and see if that improves - it should - like I said its all about technique and practice
I have that exact same sprayer and just purchased Fusion (been an avid Dixie Belle user for years) and wanted to know how much you thinned it out. I plan on using the color Putty.
So thinning is like a science experiment! So I don't measure anymore (I have been doing so long now). Most every sprayer should come with a viscosity cup, use that, time it and the sweet spot is about 35-40 seconds run through. Or you can start with 5% water to paint ratio and go from there! Good luck
I want to use this color on my lower cabinets. Do you recommend I use the sprayer for that or just use the brush? I want to use Victorian Lace on tops.
So I prefer to spray, but spraying inside can be quite a lot of work, you risk overspray and would want to tape and mask everything off. You could paint the cabinet bases by brush and take the doors off and take outside and spray.
I just got an earlex. I used the velocity cup and was good. I’m using fusion mineral paint But the paint is coming out blotchy what am I doing wrong . I have tried adjusting the flow and it doesn’t seem to help.
It truly hard to help diagnose an issue here with no photos or other knowledge. If it coming out orange peel like the product is too thick and having issue pushing through the needle. It could be not enough air pressure (leak in one of the hoses), it could be something as simple as a clog of product in the line. So you see it’s super hard to pinpoint without more info. When you say blotchy is it spraying like orange peel, it is drying down smooth, is it sputtering? There is a lot to consider. I would try contacting earlex and see if they can help you diagnose.
So not every color/every brand needs thinning - the darker Fusion colors (because they are made with different pigments than say whites are typically thinner). I do thin the white/light colors - it honestly just depends on the paint when you open the jar and your equipment - the better/more advance sprayer with more advanced settings as well can alleviate thinning because you will have more options with your spray setting adjustments
Great Video! Can you or do you use Floetrol? I know many use distilled water, but do you have any recommendations on thinning any of your paints. thanks
I don’t use floetrol, that’s better when brushing. Just use water to thin. Use your viscosity cup provided with your sprayer to time out how thin your paint should be. Each paint and color is different consistency,.
@@gazsto9510 you can, I just never have had the need to use it when spraying, it’s more of an extender and to alleviate brush strokes - and only to be used sparingly, so I wouldn’t necessarily use for thinning. Totally up to each user though! 😀

I saw another video where you used another sprayer for poly top coats. I believe it was a Fuji semi pro sprayer. Do you still recommend 2 different sprayers (one for paint and one for top coats)?
You don't have to have two different spray systems, for instance you could have to spray guns/cups for the same system, using one for clear and one for paint. Does that make sense? So I do have two systems that I switch up using, but I also have two gun/cups for my earlex spray station as well - which is a more economical choice vs. buying two whole spray stations.
I use the standard tip - I do not typically feel the need to switch them out for water based paints. As for the setting this particular system does not have a numbered setting system - so I couldn’t tell you how it was dialed in - I switch that up depending on the product and piece I’m working on but there is no way for me to tell you a setting number on this one 😀
I do thin a bit, it helps to push through he sprayer and make for a nicer overall finish. The snout will depend on brand, paint type and even color. I suggest using a viscosity cup and check your sprayers manual for optimal timing (most manuals will list that information)
I always dilute a little bit, it depends on brand and color and the sprayer you are using - most sprayer manuals will tell you what levels of viscosity products should be so you know just how much to dilute - I find that by doing so it just makes for that super beautifully smooth application and finish 😀
Hello it’s me again. I was just curious on how much fusion paint you use for a piece like this? I spray using the flexio 4300 thanks to your video 🤗 I feel like I am going through a little to much paint and not sure how to correct it. Any advice would be great. Thanks!
I typically use 2/3-3/4 of a ping for a piece like this - of course some factors to consider - darker colors cover with less product and if you prime you will save on product too, I do have some waste in the cup, I scrape clean so not much, but it’s also about the amount of overspray your sprayer product es, the pressure control setting and the amount of flow through the needle. I have mine pretty dialed in so my overspray is minimal. The flexio does have more overspray than my Earlex or Fuji but they are different systems.
You don't have to - it has a built in topcoat - but its a very matte finish - I like to topcoat the dark color for sure to help with wipe ability and durability

I always thin when spraying, between 5-10% with Fusion, it’s pretty thin already so it just needs a little. What I suggest is using a viscosity cup (all paints will differ) and timing 35-40 seconds is usually a good spot.
About 2/3 of the jar! People always think spraying wastes a lot of paint, it does not at all! If you keep close to the piece, keep your settings dialed down and dilute a bit (helps to lay down beautifully and push through the sprayer nicely). I just recently released a spray class for purchase on my website that you may find helpful. www.borninabarnboutique.net/shop
Yes each paint brand and color is different, but you want to dilute a bit so it pushes through the sprayer nicely and lays down evenly. I have other videos that talk about that. Your sprayer will come with a viscosity cup and you want to use that to measure the consistency
@@navashasingh3556 unfortunately I can’t tell you exactly, since there is no number on the dial, you just have to play with it and practice until the flow feels right. Each paint needs to be thinned and adjusted according to their viscosity (all paints are different in formula and consistency).
I have done that process a time or two in my spraying videos - not sure which! :) I did a spraying video on the Homeright sprayer and I showcase a segment cleaning the unit - although this is not my sprayer that I use regularly - the process is the same for all sprayers. This is the way I clean it - which I find works best - there are different ways (as per the instruction manual - I just don't think it gets as clean that way and I don't do it that way - just running water through and spraying until clean - doesn't cut it for me). :)

I always thin when spraying, between 5-10% with Fusion, it’s pretty thin already so it just needs a little. What I suggest is using a viscosity cup (all paints will differ) and timing 35-40 seconds is usually a good spot.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique thank you!!!!
How much paint did you use?
About 2/3 of the jar! People always think spraying wastes a lot of paint, it does not at all! If you keep close to the piece, keep your settings dialed down and dilute a bit (helps to lay down beautifully and push through the sprayer nicely). I just recently released a spray class for purchase on my website that you may find helpful. www.borninabarnboutique.net/shop
Do you mix water in with the paint?
Yes each paint brand and color is different, but you want to dilute a bit so it pushes through the sprayer nicely and lays down evenly. I have other videos that talk about that. Your sprayer will come with a viscosity cup and you want to use that to measure the consistency
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thanks, I love your channel. Your work is beautiful!
@@aadebahr thank you so much! 😀
Did u use the default needle with ur sprayer or did u get another needle ?
I use the standard needle, it’s more about have it dialed in right on the spray nozzle/output.
Thanks for the advice . What should it be dialed in at for fusion paint ?
@@navashasingh3556 unfortunately I can’t tell you exactly, since there is no number on the dial, you just have to play with it and practice until the flow feels right. Each paint needs to be thinned and adjusted according to their viscosity (all paints are different in formula and consistency).
Where do they sell fusion mineral paint?
I get mine from ugly duckling treasures - www.uglyducklingtreasures.com?sca_ref=729201.fOX99Epobe
Have you done a video on the process of cleaning your sprayer? I would love to see that process before I decide to purchase a sprayer.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique thank you so much for your response. I found your video that showed how to clean the sprayer. I love your videos. They are so informative. You are awesome! Thank you for sharing!
@@reneeguerrero7240 of course! Thank you so much and thank you for watching! 😀
