- Hi everyone! Thank you for tuning in today!
In today's video I show you that you can use an economical and easily accessible product to prime your furniture - in a spray can!
I am doing a full furniture makeover featuring @CountryChicPaint Paint and Topcoat too.
How does Tough Coat differ from Clear Coat?
Tough Coat offers the highest durability and requires only two coats for maximum protection, whereas Clear Coat will require up to four coats. Tough Coat is VOC-compliant and best suited for kitchen table tops, kitchen cabinets and outdoor furniture. Clear Coat, on the other hand is ultra low VOC and requires less of a learning curve to use. If you are not experienced with applying clear finishes, we suggest Clear Coat because it is more user-friendly than Tough Coat.

Perfection! I've been watching professional painters wasting time with spreading on wood filler, then sanding their lives to infinity. I refuse to do all that sanding. I'm ok with this process and will be trying it soon! Thank you for confirming what I knew was possible with the proper products! Thank you and thank you Rustoleum!
Thanks again ! Another great informative video !!!
What a beautiful piece!
Thank you!
Beautiful! Thanks for the info
Thank you and you are so welcome!
Great job. I had heard before to always clean then sand to prevent the grime or residue on the piece down into the grain.
Love your videos.👏🙂
Thank you, I love your videos 🥰
Thank you!
Turned out lovely...
Thank you so much!
Adorable.
I love your videos, always very helpful! And I love the fact you don't have a long intro that I have to fast forward thru😆
Awe thank you so much! I’m always trying to improve! 😀
This is just the information I was looking for. I am in the process of painting an mdf china cabinet and was wondering if I needed a product for adhesion. Now I'm off to Lowe's. Thank you.
Awesome!
Hi I’m not sure if you remember me from a few months ago, but I was making over a free desk I received for my daughter since we are homeschooling. Anyhoo it took a long time to start my project, but I finally started and got the products I need. I had a quick question, in the beginning before you cleaned and primed, you did a scuff sand. What grit did you use to do a scuff sand all over? Also when you scuff sanded after you primed you said you used a super fine grit, What #grit would you say they are? I have sanding sponges but they have #grit on them
I do! For scuff sanding 320 grit is good - for in between coats - I use a fine sanding pad (800 grit)
Great video, you answered a bunch of questions and issues I have come across with overspray and what to do with the inside of the cabinets and doors.
Thank you very much and I’m so glad!
What other types of paint (latex, etc) can I use with the rustoleum primer? I am going to paint a dresser white and want it to be durable. And what is your suggestion for the best type of paint to use to make sure of that?
I don’t suggest latex paint for furniture. It does not adhere well and will peel down the road. I would use furniture paint. General Finishes, Fusion, country chic, all great paints. I have many paint review videos on here and those are my top choices!
Can you tell me what type of paint sprayer you use? I LOVE your work!
Hi! Thank you! Yes I have an Earlex 5500 and I also have a Fuji Semi pro 2 - I’ll link both of them here for you!

Thank you for this video!
Will Rust-Oleum primer also work on raw wood?
I'm currently doing an engineering project and my group's prototype will have us cutting a plywood sheet from home Depot. I was wondering the primer can still work on that is still raw
You are so welcome! I have used it on raw wood - I do all the time - after spraying - let dry and sand with a dime sandpaper/sanding sponge and it will be Uber smooth
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thank you again! You really helped me out :D
Love your videos, they are always so helpful & enjoyable to watch! Would the Rustoleom filler & sander primer work to fill in the top of a side table that’s very grainy? I started painting the top & noticed all these little fine lines popping through the paint.
Hi and thank you! So I would tell you that it’s a light grain filler. This can be layered and sanded in between coats to build up the coverage - but if you’re working with a heavy grain - you may need a gain filler like aqua lock first.
You could try a test area of what your working with and do several layers to see if that works for you
Thanks for getting back to me! If that doesn’t work, is there another product you would recommend to fill in the grainy wood?
@@user-fw4rp5xy7nyou bet - yes I mentioned Aqua Lock if the primer doesn’t give you enough coverage you can use that - it will definitely work 😀
You’re the best! Thanks for your help!@@BorninaBarnBoutique
Hi what sanding sponges from Amazon are you using their not in the descriptions
Oh so sorry I left them off! amzn.to/3kbpB8a
Will this be a good product for pieces that I’m painting black or any other unforgiving color? We all know that black is notorious for highlighting imperfections.
It will help! Your right any imperfections do stand out with blacks, navy’s, etc. I would suggest trying fill some of the bigger imperfections and then after sanding smooth priming - the combo works Great at helping hide them.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique thank you for the advice. Newbie to the scene 😁 I enjoy your videos and valuable info. I appreciate your hard work to be able to share your knowledge for all of us.
I'm unable to locate any General Finishes chalk paint retailers where I live in So Cal. Any tips?
Hi I can't imagine there are any. GF stoped making chalk paint though - they only make their milk paint now. Try their website - I believe they have a find a retailer near me - as well Amazon sells the milk paint too - good luck!
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thank you!
im a newbie to this. does it matter if you clean or sand first?
It doesn’t really, sometimes I clean first, sometimes I scuff sand, it makes it a little easier to clean after scuff sanding because you want your piece wiped free of any dust.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique someone told me if i sanded first it would sand the dirty stuff into the piece. so i was confused
Do you dilute the C.C. paint in your sprayer? If so, what ratio do you use?
Yes you have to dilute most every paint when spraying, I have been doing this so long I don’t measure anymore 😀. Each brand and color too is different. Sometimes it’s 10%, sometimes it’s 20%. I would suggest using a viscosity cup (typically provided with your sprayer) the sweet spot for running through is about 35-40 seconds.
@@BorninaBarnBoutique thank you so much ... can you tell I'm new to spray paintingt? LOL
@@kimberleysopha5446 I can’t tell you exactly what percentage to thin as I don’t measure anymore - I just eyeball it - so I would recommend using a viscosity cup and timing the run through. Thin a little run it through - time it and make adjustments as necessary. It’s a little tedious until you get it down. I offer one on one lessons on spraying all time - so maybe you would
Benefit from that - feel free to visit my website shop for more info on them - www.borninabarnboutique.net
Does this primer stop bleed through on cherry/ mahogany?
So I wouldn't rely on this one to stop bleed through especially those 2 wood species - I would recommend shellac on those for sure - you can get shellac in a spray can as well
@@BorninaBarnBoutique Thank you! I sorta thought so!
Petroleum jelly on the hinges will protect it from the spray paint
Yes I have used that trick, but I want to spray the hinges for a very monochromatic look and get rid of the ugly gold hinge. Sometimes I take them off and paint a different metal color or just clean them up. Just depends on the project and what I’m feeling! 😀
Works great but damned it doesn't last long and gets expensive.
