    I always wondered why KC was a huge market for ASC/McLarens. Now I know why. I bought my '86 there in August of 1986 after I got the check for my stolen '85. They were thrilled I came from Detroit to get it. I was less thrilled I couldn't get one closer to home, but ASC did pay my airfare.

      It is amazing what a hotbed for mustangs KC was. Makes you wonder if it had to do with the Twister special program in 1970, if that gave it a boost.

    The 86 7B Saleen is absolutely gorgeous. The M81 car is also a huge favorite of mine. The wheels you're building up for it are going to be phenomenal (and its a T-top!). I had never really done much research on the Predator & Dominator (and Twister) cars, so I enjoyed all that education. The Black/Gold Dominator is sure to be stunning based on your other cars. I really really wish you could have ended up with the 84 Anniversary Car (2.3T) I rescued and bought back to life. I built it for and sold it to Marshall Corrie who did a few nice touches before moving it on to another owner back east. Its actually featured in the book Art of the Mustang. Great video. I wish I had your shop storage! Nice to see the 70 Mach tucked away (beautiful story on that) and I'd be lying if that lovely Buick Wagon in the drive didn't catch my attention too.

      Totally agree - I'm working on a potential anniversary car, but as usual - it's something special. Stay tuned :) I remember your 2.3T anny, that was a super neat one. The 70 wagon is cool too, headed to paint this week. 70 Sportwagon (think - GS wagon) with a big buick 455 and EFI. Great cruiser.

      Yea i like the shifter knob! My 1st fox was a black 86gt just like the 85 shown here. Ive had 4 foxes over the years 86 - 89 - 93 - now an 88, all hatchback plus i had a 1981 red capri 302 auto but all mine have been 5speed, 1st car was a black 67 mustang 3speed 289. I love mustangs. I have a 88 LX 5.0 in the shop getting black paint now and have spent alot putting it back together, quarter windows were pitted so bought those new and bought the 10 piece side moulding kit . 1.5" cervini hood, alot of other stuff , still have to get the new rubber and latch for sunroof and the new trim kit LMR has with window trim / handles/ and the cowl by the wipers but i like that shifter knob 4sure thats the 1st one ive seen like that

    I learned a couple of things from this video. I was reading just about every Mustang publication I could get my hands on in those days and honestly didn’t remember the modifications, ie long tubes on the cars. I vaguely remember the Predator packages at dealer displays but as I recall, they never admitted to any engine mods. One minor detail is that the Kansas City and Lees Summit you mentioned are on the Missouri side of the line. And the Saleens - was it 86 or 87 that Salween won an SCCA championship with a blueprinted but otherwise stock 302? Wasn’t the first time I’d heard of someone taking a stock 302 from that era back to blueprint specs and getting a surprising power increase. I remember a guy who did it to his 302 2V powered 82-83 F150 to get it to stop burning oil and really woke it up. Anyway, beautiful collection.
    I had a 92 LX 5.0/5-speed, but had once driven a 87-89 LX convertible that had long tubes, no cats, and a bigger throttle body. Couldn’t get anyone to tell me if it had a cam or other changes. Though it was pretty thrashed and the owner had chosen not to further wisely invest money into a Hurst, it still ran pretty strong - seat of the pants better than my mildly JBA modded 92.

      @@LottsOfVintage I do agree with you my first car was a 1986 Mustang GT 5.0 5speed with T-Tops they are my favorite too and when I bought it the 87 were just being delivered but know one had them yet however when I went to pick my car up after the test drive he said I want to show you something and he close the big bay door's to service department and I hear one car pull up and another car pull up and he sticks his out the little side door and says come on in (what I didn't say earlier was my dream car was specific I wanted the 86 Black GT 5.0 5speed with T-Tops and this is like September or October of 1986 so I couldn't find a Black one anywhere) so anyway back to the story. So I walk into the service bay and there is 2 1987 one Black one White both with T-Tops and this is obviously the first time I'm seeing them in person and I just didn't like it but after looking around them they were nice and I started to like them and then I opened the door and I saw that material on the seats and I was like I don't want the grampa version I want the seats like the 86 and he said sorry that's it for the new interior and it was like $2500 difference between buying the 86 to the 87 so it wasn't anything about the money and of course I went with the 1986 and it was the funniest car I've owned I did everything for looks to the car like lowered it put Mesh Enkie wheels on it that were all polished on the lip and face and the inside of the mesh was White put a full skirt kit on it which I cannot remember the name of that kit but it looked so good and I thought this kit looked better then the Saleen kit (I know that's a huge statement but I was only 16 but I still think it looked awesome) I also did an exhaust and took out the innere fender Air Box which really helped that car it was an absolutely fantastic car the only problem I ever had with that car was I went through 4 or 5 Transmissions, again I was 16 and racing my own shadow around so I was using the hell out of it and it took it like a champ. I always wanted the 1986 Saleen but that was out of my price range and yes I paid for my Mustang all by myself and I was actually 15 just a few month's shy of my 16th Birthday and yes the 80's was an awesome time because they knew I was 15 but new I did have money and let me test drive the car and not only that because I literally did ride there on my bicycle to see the car I was buying and then I would have my parent's come the next day to pick it up but as I told him OK I'm buying the 1986 I will have my parents come pick it up with me and he said hold on a second and runs inside the dealership and comes back out and said here take the car home with you and of course I did which at first my parents where not happy with at all but after 10min and looking at the car they actually kinda laughed that I could ride my bike down to the dealership and bring back a car at 15 one thing I didn't mention was I had been going into that dealership for month's before looking at all the Mustangs which at the time they had 2 or 3 Black one's and I had talked to the same guy almost everytime. That's my story sorry so long.

    I used to have an '88 with T-tops. It wasn't even listed as an option in the '88 brochure, it was actually relatively rare. My old VIN was 1FABP42E3JF124207, I think mine was one of 49 in that color and there were just a few thousand '88s with T-tops. Not really super rare, but definitely not common.

      @foxchassis Рік тому

      Nor sure which brochure you're looking at but it is listed in the middle of the options table on page 17 of the 08/87 brochure. There were over 4600 made for model year 1988.
      They were not leftover 87 models. That is not how production works.

      @cheesebone82 Рік тому

    We're you able to verify or get more information and documentation from the original employees at Summitt Ford that built and modified the DOMINATOR/GT ?
    The owner of the shop that built the Stage 3 motor I think indicated he may still have the original engine build specs for all the motors his shop put together for Summitt Ford. (That and some other documentation is needed for that car to be officially titled or sold as a Original Summitt Ford DOMINATOR/GT .)
    Anyway if the story about these cars is true, then owning a Stage 3 is a must have. Those car were a thrilling ride I think only 6 were built and I was only able to find one 1983 model an original owner had for sale.

      @@LottsOfVintage The deal with the 3 speed is when you specified manual on the order sheet. Your car would be equiped with a 3speed unless you specifically ordered the 4 speed. It basically came down to the dealership representative that filled out your paperwork when you were ordering the car. If the paperwork was not filled out correctly you ended up with the 3 speed. The 4speed was only a 45.00 upgrade. The 3speeds are rare because no one wanted them. Sorry for the rant. I love your platform. Keep up the great work.

    "Some of the fastest Fox body Mustangs..."
    Yeah. But "some of the fastest" doesn't really mean anything and the fact is THE "fastest" Fox body Mustangs are the plain old stripped down "notchback" LXs. Why? Because they weigh dozens to hundreds of pounds less than the "racy" LOOKING GTs with "body kits" and all the other drag and/or weight adding optional equipment. And those "rare" Mustangs are "tuner cars". Nothing more or less. None were "built" anywhere but a Ford assembly line and there is no separate VIN or "book value" on or for any of them no matter how they are "presented" to "collectors".
    And Lee's Summit is in Missourie. Not Kansas. Nor are there now or were there ever "lots of hot Mustangs running around the Kansas City area" unless it was these tuner cars being test driven after being "built".
    Unless by HOT you mean coolant temp because THAT is certainly true about those tuner cars with their "hot engines" because like Mustangs prior to the SN96 their cooling systems were never more than barely adequate even with "cold" stock engines in lighter weight LXs and adding "body kits" and additional drag and "insulation" in "ground effects" keeping heat in and under the cars in anything close to hot and humid conditions at "high speed" would still overheat. And stay hot parked and idling hood down and AC on even with "cool" white paint color.
    The Nebraska State Patrol found that out when using 5.0 LX Mustangs for "pursuit" once the interstate speed limit went to 65 and then 75. They'd overheat "pursuing" speeders clocked going the other direction and then during the stop stay hot unless the troopers killed the AC and rolled down the windows . Working "traffic control" at I-80 detours for construction mid-summer both Mustang "Pursuits" and Crown Vic "Interceptors" with "High Output" 5.0s had to have their hoods open roadside and AC off in order to keep them running and the "cherries" on and the battery charged.
    The few 4th gen Camaros and Caprice LTZs with LT1 engines and "reverse flow cooling" the NSP "tested" briefly before the Caprice was "cancelled" never had a bit of trouble with overheating no matter the situations and both would outrun - and outhandle and outlast and out mileage - their Ford "competition" so badly it wasn't even funny.
    The only place the NSP Mustangs "lived" was western Nebraska which is far higher and drier and where spring comes later and fall earlier and where 90% of I-80 traffic is trucks since all the serious speeders came and come out of Colorado and get on I-80 where it "merges" with I-76. The vast majority of patrolling and speeder "pursuit" in western Nebraska is on 2-lane state highways with towns every 25-50 miles and nothing but gravel county roads to "escape" on if you turn off the highway. 60 mph speed limit back then and seeing anyone ticketed for more than 7 or 8 mph was extremely rare.

    I live in KC, Oct. 86' was my 16th birthday. It was a Friday night, to my surprise my mother gave me an 85' Dominator GT! Two days later I met head on with a tree and totaled it, nearly killed myself! I learned never to give a car like that to my kid at 16! I've owned nearly 70 classic cars since and six or seven different mustangs in the mix, currently enjoying my 50th ann. Coyote. Out of all of the cars I've ever owned..the Dominator is the one I wish I still had! Thanks for the video!

      Wow, no way - great story! What color was your Dominator? We currently have one of the 6 Anniversary Dominator GTs as well that we've had the matching #s 302 rebuilt for. It may be for sale soon.

    In 1982 the foxbody 5.0L made a killer 157hp lol. Seems like kid numbers with today's v8 today's 5.0L makes like 450hp back then they didnt make a lot of power not stock they didnt too small of a v8 to scary anyone I mean nothing is scary about 157hp lol. Maybe the size of the car is scary. Fox body guys dont understand your cars going to be kinda fast when a dodge neon was bigger. Foxbody cars are legit gocart with engines on them. I can put a big predator engine on a bicycle and make it run like a mustang it's the weight not the engine given u the power dodge had larger v8s gm had larger v8 hell even GMs 5.0L was larger at 305 cubic inches. Not a fan of small motors I like big motors big block 454 big block 460 426 hemis ect ect ect real v8 engines I promise those big block weren't 5.0L

    Why won't you talk about the engines? What made the 302R special?

      The engines on these are all stock internals. Summit Ford, who made the Dominators, actually got in trouble with the EPA in 1983 for doing head/cam work on them. It wasn't until the Saleen SSC that one of the smaller companies got EPA clearance to modify the engines again in a way that affected emissions stuff. Neat history.

    The Saleen is a hatch. Not a coupe. Coupe's have a truck. Get your facts stright. You had 1 job.

    Steve Saleen was a visionary guru when it came to modifying the Mustang. His cars still look amazing and have aged very, very well. They just look "right" from the sleekness of the body kit, the wheel choice, the stance...everything is just PERFECT. In comparison to the Saleen that Predator looks tacky AF and like it was thrown together in some trailer park with AutoZone parts...I get that the Predator is rare , but it's ugly and cheap looking while the Saleen looks at home sitting next to a Ferrari even today.
